How to Fix “The System Cannot Read from the Specified Device” in Windows

“The system cannot read from the specified device” is Windows error 30, also written as 0x1E or ERROR_READ_FAULT. It means Windows attempted to read data and the operation failed; it does not, by itself, prove that a disk has died. A loose cable, insufficient USB power, a driver problem, an offline volume, a missing drive letter, filesystem damage, or failing media can all produce the same message.

Protect irreplaceable files before trying repairs. If the device is intermittently readable, copy the most important data to another disk first. Then work through the checks below in order, starting with low-risk connection tests and ending with recovery or replacement decisions.

What the message means

Microsoft’s Win32 error table identifies this message as ERROR_READ_FAULT, numeric code 30 (0x1E). The wording describes the failed read operation, not the underlying cause. Windows has separate codes for a cyclic-redundancy-check (CRC) error, a sector that cannot be found, a device that is not ready, and a device attached to the system that is not functioning. Those related codes can narrow the diagnosis when they appear alongside the read fault.

In practical terms, Windows can see enough of the device or storage path to attempt a read, but something prevents reliable data transfer. The fault may be outside the storage media itself: a USB port, cable, hub, power supply, driver, or volume state can interrupt the path. Treat the first occurrence as a diagnostic symptom rather than a verdict about the disk.

Protect files before troubleshooting

Repairs can make a marginal device work, but repeated reads can also stress media that is already failing. Use this safety sequence before changing settings.

  1. Copy essential files while the device is readable. Start with irreplaceable documents, photos, project files, and any data that has no other backup. Copy to a different physical disk, not another folder on the same device.
  2. Stop repeated retries when symptoms worsen. Disconnect the device if it clicks, repeatedly disconnects, becomes extremely slow, or triggers a critical storage warning. Do not keep reconnecting a mechanically noisy or rapidly deteriorating drive.
  3. Decide whether the data is replaceable. If you have a verified backup, you can accept more risk while testing. If the only copy is on the affected device, preserve it and consider a read-only image or professional recovery before destructive operations.
  4. Do not initialize or format yet. Initialization and formatting create a new partition or file table. They can remove Windows’ existing route to files, so consider recovery first when the disk contains needed data.

Use the symptoms to choose the safest branch

Record what Windows does before changing anything. The observation determines which test has the best chance of helping without risking data.

What you observe What it suggests Next action Risk to existing data
The device appears and disappears, or works only at certain angles Connection, cable, power, or an unstable device Try a direct port, a known-good certified cable, and adequate external power Low
A different port or cable changes the result The original USB path is the likely cause Replace the faulty cable or avoid the problematic port or hub Low
Device Manager shows a warning icon and a status code Driver or device-enumeration problem Read the code, update or reinstall the device, then restart Moderate
Disk Management sees the disk but it is Offline or has no letter Windows can see the disk, but the volume is not mounted normally Bring a known disk online or assign a missing letter Low to moderate if you avoid initialization and formatting
CRC, sector-not-found, repeated read failures, or a critical reliability/media warning Possible filesystem damage or failing storage media Preserve data, image or recover it, and plan to replace unreliable hardware High if you keep stressing the device

Check the physical connection first

Reconnect the device directly

  1. Safely eject the device if Windows still offers an eject option.
  2. Unplug it, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it firmly.
  3. Use a USB port on the computer itself rather than a hub or monitor port. If a desktop has ports on both the front and rear, test a rear motherboard port as well.
  4. After reconnecting, retry the smallest file operation that previously failed. Do not begin a large copy until you know the connection is stable.

A direct connection removes one possible point of failure. If the device works directly but not through a hub, leave it connected directly while you copy data and replace or avoid the hub.

Test another cable

Use the manufacturer’s cable when available, or a certified replacement with the correct connector and data capability. A cable can provide enough power for the device to appear while still producing unreliable data transfers. If swapping cables consistently changes the behavior, the original cable is the practical fix.

Provide adequate power

Some USB devices need more power than a single port or an unpowered hub can supply. Microsoft’s USB guidance recommends using an external power source for a device designed to be powered externally. Connect the device’s own power adapter, or use a powered USB hub that is suitable for the device. A powered hub supplies power; it cannot repair storage media that is failing.

Do not use a succession of adapters while diagnosing a valuable disk. Keep the path simple: device, known-good cable, direct port, and the manufacturer’s power supply where applicable.

Check Device Manager for a driver or device status code

Device Manager can show whether Windows is reporting a device-level problem rather than merely a failed file read.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+X and select Device Manager, or search for “Device Manager” from the Start menu.
  2. Expand the category that matches the hardware, such as Disk drives, Universal Serial Bus controllers, DVD/CD-ROM drives, or another category appropriate to the device.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon. Double-click the device and read the text in the Device status box, including any numeric status code.
  4. If Windows identifies a driver problem, open the device’s context menu, choose Update driver, and follow the available Windows prompts.
  5. If updating does not help, choose Uninstall device. Confirm the removal, restart Windows, and let it reinstall the device. If a restart does not trigger detection, return to Device Manager and choose Scan for hardware changes.

Uninstalling a device entry removes that Windows device registration; it does not format the disk. Nevertheless, record the status message first so you can compare it after the restart. Microsoft documents this update, reinstall, and restart pattern for optical-drive problems, and the same sequence is useful when a removable device has a clear driver status error.

Inspect the disk in Disk Management

Disk Management reveals whether Windows sees the physical disk, its capacity, and the state of its volume. It is especially useful when File Explorer does not show the device.

  1. Press Windows+R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. You can also search for Create and format hard disk partitions and open the result.
  2. Wait for the lower pane to finish loading. Match the disk by its expected capacity and, if shown, its manufacturer. Do not act on a disk merely because its position looks familiar.
  3. Check whether the disk is marked Offline. If it is a known disk with no reason to remain offline, right-click the disk label and choose Online.
  4. Check the volume block for a drive letter. If the volume is healthy and the letter is missing, right-click the volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, select Add, and assign an unused letter.
  5. Compare the capacity Windows reports with the device’s expected capacity. A missing or implausibly small capacity is evidence that the connection, enclosure, controller, or media still needs attention.

Do not choose Initialize Disk, create a new volume, or format a volume that contains needed files. Those actions change the disk’s structure and can make recovery more difficult. If Disk Management shows the correct disk and a healthy volume but reads still fail, return to the physical and media-failure branches rather than repeatedly changing the volume.

Separate a filesystem problem from a hardware problem

Signs that the Windows path may be at fault

  • The device is consistently detected at its expected capacity.
  • A different port or cable changes the error, or the device works normally on another computer.
  • Device Manager shows a driver status code that changes after an update or reinstall.
  • Disk Management shows the volume, but it is Offline or lacks a drive letter.

These observations justify connection, driver, and mount-state corrections before considering replacement. Keep a backup as soon as access returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs of possible media failure

  • CRC errors or sector-not-found messages accompany the read fault.
  • Read failures recur across multiple known-good ports and cables.
  • The device repeatedly disconnects, becomes progressively slower, or makes clicking sounds.
  • Windows reports a critical warning for degraded reliability or significant media errors.
  • The same capacity and read behavior appear on another computer.

This pattern is stronger evidence of failing hardware or media than the generic message alone. Minimize further reads, preserve what is accessible, and use a read-only image or professional recovery service when the files matter. Replace the device if it cannot remain reliable; a successful temporary read is not proof that it is safe for continued storage.

Targeted playbooks for common situations

The USB drive is not detected at all

  1. Disconnect other high-power USB devices temporarily.
  2. Connect the drive directly to a different computer port.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s cable or a certified replacement.
  4. Connect the manufacturer’s external power supply if the drive supports one.
  5. Open Device Manager and use Scan for hardware changes.

If it remains absent from Device Manager and Disk Management after these tests, Windows has not established a usable device path. Do not initialize a disk simply because it is missing from File Explorer; preserve the original device and assess recovery or hardware service.

The drive appears, but File Explorer cannot open it

Open Disk Management and check whether the expected volume is present, Online, and assigned a letter. Correct only those states when the disk identity and capacity are clear. If the volume is present but every read fails, stop before formatting and follow the media-failure guidance.

The error appears after a driver warning

Record the Device status code, try Update driver, and, if necessary, uninstall the device and restart Windows. Verify the result in Device Manager after the restart. A cleared warning with stable reads points to the driver path; a persistent warning or new read errors requires the connection and hardware checks as well.

An optical drive is affected

For a DVD or CD drive, check the drive under DVD/CD-ROM drives in Device Manager. Follow the update, uninstall, restart, and hardware-scan sequence. Test a different disc as well: if only one disc fails while others read normally, the disc itself may be the limiting factor; if every disc fails, continue with the device and driver checks.

Recovery before formatting or replacement

When data is important and the device is intermittently readable, prioritize preservation over experimentation.

  1. Copy files in small groups, starting with the most valuable. If one folder causes repeated errors, skip it temporarily and continue with files that read cleanly.
  2. Keep the device cool, still, and directly connected. Avoid repeatedly unplugging it while a copy is in progress.
  3. If ordinary copying cannot complete, create a read-only image with a recovery workflow designed for failing media, or consult a professional recovery service. The goal is to read each area as few times as practical and work from the image.
  4. Once the files are safe, replace a device that has produced critical reliability or media-error warnings. Do not return it to important storage merely because formatting makes it appear usable.

If the data has a verified backup, you can re-create the volume after confirming that the hardware is trustworthy. If the data is not replaceable, do not trade it for a quick “fix” that changes the disk structure.

What not to do

  • Do not assume the disk is dead from the wording alone. Error 30 is shared by connection, power, driver, volume, filesystem, and media conditions.
  • Do not keep retrying a noisy or rapidly slowing drive. Repeated attempts can consume the remaining opportunity to recover files.
  • Do not initialize or format before considering recovery. Those operations create a new partition or file table and can remove access to existing data.
  • Do not hide the symptom with a drive-letter change when reads still fail. A missing letter is a mount-state problem; it cannot repair damaged media.
  • Do not treat a powered hub as a repair. It can correct insufficient USB power, but it cannot fix a failing disk or damaged filesystem.

After access is restored

Finish by copying a complete backup to another disk and verifying that important files open. Keep the replacement cable or direct-port arrangement that proved stable, and avoid the hub or power setup that caused the original behavior. If the device generated critical storage warnings, retire it from important work even if Windows currently reads it. Record the error code and the steps that worked; that information helps distinguish a future connection problem from a recurrence of media failure.
