If Windows or NVIDIA software shows NVIDIA NV-Failsafe instead of your monitor’s normal name, the display connection may not be providing usable monitor-identification data (EDID). NVIDIA documented a driver bug that caused this exact label on certain monitors and lists a fix in GeForce Game Ready and Studio Driver 610.62, released June 16, 2026. That does not mean every NV-Failsafe entry has the same cause—or that your graphics card is dying.
Start with a fresh connection and one monitor plugged directly into the GPU. Then install the right NVIDIA driver for your GPU and Windows version, or roll back if the problem began after an update. If the label or display problems persist, test the cable, ports, dock and monitor one at a time.
What “NVIDIA NV-Failsafe” means
Monitors send identification information called EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) through the display connection. It tells the computer the monitor’s model and supported modes, such as resolutions and refresh rates. NVIDIA’s release notes confirm that, for certain monitors, a driver problem prevented EDID from being read and caused the monitor to appear as “NVIDIA NV-Failsafe.” NVIDIA tracks that issue as 6005508.
The label is a fallback identification, not a diagnosis of a failed graphics card. It can appear instead of the monitor’s real name, as a stale or duplicate display, or temporarily after sleep, a restart, a driver installation or monitor power cycling. Remote-display software and devices such as docks, KVMs and capture cards can also complicate display detection, but the NVIDIA release note does not identify them as causes of its specific driver bug.

The label matters most when it accompanies a problem: missing native resolution or refresh rate, a phantom screen, flickering, black screens, signal loss or failures after sleep. If the correct monitor is active and its expected modes work without instability, the name alone does not establish a hardware fault.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Restart Windows and turn off the monitor. Unplug the monitor’s power for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, turn it on and select the input that matches the cable.
- Reseat the display cable at both ends. If possible, temporarily use a known-good cable and connect the monitor directly to the graphics card.
- Remove intermediate devices for the test: disconnect docks, KVMs, adapters, capture cards, AV receivers, splitters and secondary monitors. A direct connection helps isolate the display path; it does not by itself prove which component caused the problem.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver. The screen may briefly blink. This refreshes the driver, but cannot repair a faulty cable, port or monitor.
- Open Settings → System → Display. Use Identify to match display numbers to physical screens. Under Multiple displays, choose Detect if Windows has missed a connected display. Menu wording can vary by Windows build.
- Press Windows + P and check the projection mode. Test PC screen only for one display or Extend for separate displays. Avoid custom resolutions and unusually high refresh rates while diagnosing.
Detection can help with a temporarily missed or stale display, but repeatedly selecting Detect will not fix a failed connection.
Check whether Windows has the right display and modes
In Settings → System → Display, check whether the physical monitor appears in the expected position and whether Windows is treating it as duplicated, extended, disconnected or disabled. Confirm that the intended screen is the main display if you use more than one.
Open the display’s settings and check its resolution and refresh rate. First aim for the monitor’s native resolution and a refresh rate it officially supports. If those choices are unavailable, or Windows shows a phantom screen instead, continue with the connection and driver checks rather than forcing a custom mode.

Install or roll back the NVIDIA driver
NVIDIA’s GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.62 release page, dated June 16, 2026, lists issue 6005508: an EDID-reading problem that caused certain monitors to be identified as “NVIDIA NV-Failsafe.” This is the documented driver fix for that specific issue—not proof that every occurrence will be resolved by the same package. Driver availability depends on GPU, operating system and product family, so use NVIDIA’s selector to find a compatible package rather than assuming 610.62 is the newest or appropriate driver for every system.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update, try a rollback first:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA GPU and select Properties → Driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available, then restart Windows. The option may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver package.
If the driver is old, corrupted or the issue followed a Windows update, get the appropriate driver from NVIDIA Driver Downloads. Choose the Game Ready or Studio package as appropriate for your use and hardware. In the installer, select Custom installation, then Perform a clean installation; restart when it finishes and check the display again. A clean installation can reset NVIDIA profiles and custom display settings.
Notebook owners should also check the laptop maker’s support page. Some notebooks require OEM-certified graphics drivers for their specific hardware, and an external display may be routed through a different GPU than the built-in screen.

Remove only known phantom displays
First review the layout in Windows Display settings. If NVIDIA Control Panel is available, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Set up multiple displays. Check whether a screen that is not physically connected is listed or enabled. Disable only a display you know is unused, then select Apply. Feature availability and menu wording vary by driver, GPU and display routing.
To clear an obsolete monitor record, open Device Manager → View → Show hidden devices, expand Monitors and uninstall only greyed-out entries you recognize as no longer connected. Restart Windows so it can redetect active displays. Do not remove every monitor entry: a connected monitor may temporarily disappear during detection, and laptop panels may use generic names. Do not uninstall the NVIDIA GPU as a routine monitor-cleanup step.
If a virtual-display or USB-display driver is present, identify the associated application or hardware before changing it. Randomly removing drivers can create a separate display problem.
Isolate the cable, port, monitor and intermediate devices
Change one part of the display path at a time. Avoid adapters and extensions during testing; confirm the monitor’s selected input matches the cable. For DisplayPort, release the connector latch before unplugging it. A cable or adapter may carry a lower-resolution mode while failing at a higher-bandwidth resolution, HDR or refresh rate, so a working 60 Hz mode does not rule out a connection-path limitation.

| Test result | What it points toward |
|---|---|
| The issue follows one cable | The cable or its connector is a likely cause. |
| The issue returns with one dock, KVM, adapter or capture device | That intermediate device, its firmware or its EDID passthrough is a likely place to investigate. |
| The issue follows the monitor to another computer | The monitor, its firmware or its input port may be involved. |
| Only one GPU output fails with a known-good monitor and cable | That GPU port or the system board may be involved. |
| Multiple monitors fail on the same computer | Investigate the driver, GPU, motherboard and system firmware or power as well as the display path. |
| The problem appears only during a remote session or after starting an application | A remote or virtual display path may be involved; test with that session or application closed. |
| The failure occurs before Windows starts | Look beyond Windows display settings toward the monitor, cable, port or firmware. |
These results narrow the possibilities; none proves a cause on its own. To cross-test, try the affected monitor on another computer, a known-good monitor on the affected computer, another GPU output, and—where possible—the suspect cable with another monitor.

Remote sessions, virtual-monitor drivers, game-streaming or capture software, DisplayLink and other USB-display hardware, VR software, and HDMI or DisplayPort dummy plugs can expose displays that are not ordinary monitors connected directly to a GPU. This is a diagnostic possibility, not an explanation confirmed by NVIDIA for every NV-Failsafe entry.
- End remote sessions and exit capture or streaming applications.
- Disconnect USB-display hardware, docks, KVMs, capture devices and dummy plugs.
- Connect one physical monitor directly to the GPU and restart the computer.
- Check whether NV-Failsafe is still listed, then reconnect devices and start applications one at a time.
If the entry returns with one device or application, investigate its settings, driver or firmware. Avoid deleting its display driver until you know what hardware or software depends on it.
Extra checks for laptops and hybrid graphics
A laptop can contain both integrated Intel or AMD graphics and an NVIDIA GPU. The internal panel may be controlled by the integrated GPU, while external ports may follow a different route depending on the laptop model. As a result, NVIDIA Control Panel may not show every screen or setting described for a desktop.

- Check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for graphics, chipset, BIOS and Thunderbolt or USB4 updates, and follow its instructions about OEM-certified drivers.
- Install or update both integrated-graphics and NVIDIA drivers when the manufacturer’s guidance calls for them.
- Test the built-in panel separately from an external monitor, and connect the external monitor directly rather than through a dock.
- Look for model-specific Hybrid Graphics, discrete-GPU, MUX or external-display options only in the manufacturer’s documentation or support software.
Do not change a BIOS graphics mode as a generic fix. The wrong setting can disable an expected display path or leave the screen blank.
Use full driver cleanup only if a normal reinstall fails
A third-party removal utility such as Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is an escalation, not a first step. Consider it only if a normal NVIDIA clean installation fails and the symptoms point to a persistent driver-installation problem. Removing display drivers can temporarily leave Windows at a basic resolution and can complicate hybrid-graphics laptops. Have a recovery path and the replacement driver ready before proceeding.
- Download the correct replacement NVIDIA driver and create a restore point.
- If Windows Update may install a driver during cleanup, temporarily disconnect from the internet.
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode and use a reputable driver-removal tool according to its instructions.
- Restart, install the downloaded NVIDIA driver, then reconnect to the internet and retest.
Do not use registry edits or EDID overrides as routine repairs. An EDID override is monitor-specific and can impose unsupported timings; it belongs only in advanced troubleshooting after the connection and driver have been isolated.
When to seek hardware support
Contact the appropriate system, monitor or GPU support provider if the problem persists after a compatible driver installation and direct-connection test, particularly when it also occurs with known-good cables and displays. Hardware investigation is more urgent if you see artifacts before Windows loads, repeated black screens or signal loss, colored lines, a GPU missing from Device Manager, a Device Manager hardware error such as Code 43, or symptoms that worsen under load or heat.
Before contacting support, record the GPU model, Windows edition and build, NVIDIA driver version, monitor model, cable type, and whether the connection is direct or docked. Note the exact symptoms, whether they occur before Windows starts, and the results of alternate cable, port and monitor tests. Screenshots of Windows Display settings, Device Manager and NVIDIA Control Panel can help support teams identify the failing part of the chain.
