In Minecraft Java Edition, a “mod not found” message usually means the loader cannot identify, load, or satisfy a mod in your instance. The reliable fix is to record the exact mod ID and dependency named in the error, then verify five things together: the project identifier, Minecraft version, loader, client/server side, and JAR file placement. Install every required dependency built for that same combination, leave each download as an unextracted .jar in the correct instance’s mods folder, and use latest.log to confirm what the loader rejected. If the error survives those checks, start with only essential mods and add the others back one at a time.
What “mod not found” means
The wording can come from Minecraft, Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, a launcher, or a server manager, so the precise screen varies. In each case, the loader is looking for a mod or dependency that is absent, incorrectly identified, incompatible, or rejected. A plausible filename is not proof that the loader has found the right project: configurations may use a mod ID or project slug that differs from the downloaded filename.

It is normally a configuration or compatibility failure. Treat downloaded JARs carefully anyway: use the project’s legitimate download page, keep backups of worlds and server files, and do not run a JAR as a standalone application just to test it.
Start with the complete error and log
Record every name and version
Do not troubleshoot from the short launcher pop-up alone. Copy the complete error text and open the affected instance’s logs/latest.log. For a server, use the server’s own log rather than a client log. Record:
#1 Best Overall
- the named mod ID or slug;
- the required and detected versions;
- the Minecraft version;
- the loader named by the message (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or another loader);
- the dependency that is missing or rejected; and
- whether the failure occurs on a client, a dedicated server, or both.
The first relevant error in latest.log is often more useful than the final crash line. Search for terms such as missing, dependency, requires, invalid, mod ID, or incompatible. A later cascade of errors may simply be a consequence of the first missing file.
Check the five compatibility axes
A mod is usable only when all of these values agree. Fix the first mismatch you find rather than replacing random files.
| Axis | What to verify | Typical correction |
|---|---|---|
| Identifier | The ID or project slug in the log or configuration matches the project you installed. | Correct the slug/ID; a similar-looking filename can still represent a different project. |
| Minecraft version | The mod release explicitly supports the exact game version used by the instance. | Install a build for that version, or change the instance to the version for which the mod was released. |
| Loader | The file is built for the selected Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge loader. | Download the loader-specific build. A Fabric file is not automatically a Forge or NeoForge file. |
| Side | The mod supports the side where it is being loaded: client, server, or both. | Use a server-compatible build on a server and keep client-only mods out of a dedicated server. |
| Dependencies | Every required library or companion mod is installed at a compatible version. | Add the dependency for the same Minecraft version and loader, then restart. |
| File and source | The download is the intended JAR from the project’s legitimate page and is in the active instance. | Redownload the correct artifact and place it directly in that instance’s mods folder. |
Step-by-step fixes
1. Verify the mod ID or project slug
If a server manager or configuration says “mod not found,” compare its value with the mod’s project page and the identifier shown in the log. Copy the slug exactly, including spelling, hyphens, and capitalization where the system distinguishes them. Do not infer the ID from a renamed local file. A file named example-mod.jar can contain a different internal ID, and an outdated configuration can point to a project that has been renamed or replaced.
After correcting the configuration, save it, remove any incorrectly downloaded artifact, and let the manager download the requested project again if that is how the instance is maintained. Then restart and check the new log for the same ID.
2. Match the Minecraft version exactly
Check the version displayed by the launcher or server startup command, not merely the version you intended to use. Mod release pages commonly separate builds by patch version, and a build for one Minecraft release is not guaranteed to load on another. If the log says that a mod requires a different game version, choose one of two deliberate paths:
- keep the current instance and download the mod release that lists its exact Minecraft version; or
- change the instance to the version supported by the mod, then review every other mod and dependency before launching.
Do not mix files from several game versions in one mods directory. When testing, make a separate instance or backup so a version change does not alter a working world unexpectedly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Match the loader, not just the game
Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge are separate loader ecosystems. Select the loader profile that the mod release names. A mod built for Fabric cannot be made into a Forge mod by changing its filename, and an old Forge build is not the same as a NeoForge build. The reverse is also true.
A concrete symptom of this mistake is a Forge log saying that a JAR is invalid because it lacks mods.toml. That file is expected by Forge metadata; a Fabric JAR placed in the Forge instance can therefore be ignored or rejected. Remove the wrong-loader file and obtain the correct build instead of editing or extracting it.

4. Install every required dependency
Many mods rely on a library, API, or companion mod. The log may state the dependency’s ID and a minimum or exact version. Install that dependency in the same instance, using a release that supports the same Minecraft version and loader as the parent mod. A dependency for Fabric does not satisfy a Forge requirement even when the names look identical.
For managed servers, dependency downloads may need to be enabled explicitly in the server manager’s configuration. If the manager has a required-dependency option, use the exact ID and version range reported by the error. After installation, confirm that both the parent mod and dependency appear in the startup log; installing only the visible mod will not satisfy a missing library.

Open the folder belonging to the profile that you actually launch and locate its mods directory. Place the downloaded file directly inside it. Do not put it in a neighboring profile, a generic downloads folder, or a nested directory that the loader does not scan.
Keep the file as a JAR. Do not open it with an archive utility and extract its contents into the folder. The loader expects the original archive and its metadata. If a download arrived as a ZIP containing several files, read the project’s installation directions and select the actual loader JAR; do not rename an unrelated archive to .jar.

If the file appears in the folder but the log never mentions it, verify that you launched the same instance whose mods folder you edited. Multiple launch profiles and server copies are a common source of an apparently ignored mod.
6. Remove files built for the wrong loader or side
Temporarily remove any JAR that the log labels invalid, incompatible, or client-only on a dedicated server. Keep a backup outside the active mods folder rather than deleting it permanently. Recheck the project’s release details and download a server-compatible or client-compatible build as appropriate.
Client-only content such as a rendering or interface mod may be valid on a player’s installation but fail when copied to a dedicated server. Conversely, a server-side utility may not provide anything useful on a client. The log’s side-specific wording is more reliable than guessing from the filename.
7. Isolate a conflict
If identifiers, versions, loader, dependencies, and placement all check out, another mod may be preventing startup. Use a controlled isolation test:
Best Value
- Stop Minecraft or the server completely.
- Back up the world and the current
modsfolder. - Move all nonessential JARs to a temporary folder, leaving the loader and the mod you are testing.
- Launch and inspect
latest.log. - If it works, return a small group of mods, restart, and continue until the failure returns; then test members of that group one at a time.
- When the conflicting pair or group is identified, check for a compatible release, a required dependency, or a documented configuration change.
Adding files back one at a time is slower than guessing, but it produces a reproducible answer and prevents a working mod from being discarded unnecessarily.
Common messages and the corresponding remedy
| Log or screen wording | Likely meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “Mod not found” with an ID or slug | The configured identifier does not resolve to an installed project. | Compare the exact ID with the project page and configuration; correct the value or install that project. |
| “Missing dependency” or “requires …” | A library or companion mod is absent or the installed version is unsuitable. | Install the named dependency for the same game version and loader. |
| “Requires Minecraft …” | The mod targets another game release. | Use a release for the current version or deliberately change the instance version. |
“Fabric” file in a Forge setup, or an invalid JAR lacking mods.toml |
The artifact was built for a different loader. | Remove it and download the Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge build that matches the instance. |
| The mod is absent from the log | The active instance may not be reading the folder or the file is not a valid JAR. | Confirm the launched profile, direct placement in mods, and the unextracted file’s extension and source. |
| Works alone but not with the full pack | Another mod or combination is conflicting. | Use the remove-and-readd isolation procedure and keep the log from each test. |
Client, server, and modpack checks
When only the client fails
Confirm that the client profile uses the intended loader and game version. Compare its mods directory with the pack’s manifest or installation instructions. A client can fail because a required visual or library mod is missing even when the server is healthy.
When only the server fails
Read the server log first. Remove client-only files, install server-side dependencies, and verify that the server’s loader matches the release selected for the pack. Do not copy a client folder blindly: the two sides can require different sets of files.
When joining a modded server
The client and server must agree on the mods that require both sides. A mismatch can appear as a missing or incompatible mod even though the file exists locally. Compare IDs and versions rather than filenames, and ask the server administrator for the exact loader and pack version if the log names a project you do not recognize.
When a clean reinstall is justified
Reinstalling the loader should be a final controlled step, not the first response. Consider it only after the log points to damaged loader files, the instance profile is clearly wrong, or a minimal test instance fails with a known-compatible mod. Preserve the world, configuration, and a copy of latest.log first. Create a fresh instance with the intended Minecraft version and loader, test one mod, and then migrate the remaining files gradually. This distinguishes an instance problem from a bad mod release and avoids carrying an old incompatible JAR into the new setup.
Quick Recap
How to prevent the error returning
- Keep separate instances for different Minecraft versions and loaders.
- Record each mod’s ID, supported game version, loader, and required dependencies when building a pack.
- Do not rename, extract, or casually mix JARs from different releases.
- Back up worlds before changing a large mod set or downgrading a version.
- Keep the full startup log when reporting a problem; the first missing ID or rejected file is usually decisive.
