Start by identifying which Steam release you own. The 2011 The Lord of the Rings: War in the North (app ID 32800) and The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition (app ID 2523770, released August 11, 2026) are separate games. The older release uses a 2011-era executable and DirectX 9 requirements; Legacy Edition requires 64-bit Windows 11 and DirectX 12. The crash and controller workarounds reported for app ID 32800 are not established fixes for Legacy Edition.

The original listing’s recommended specification is a Core2 Duo 3 GHz or AMD X2 5000 / Phenom X4 9600, 4 GB RAM, and a GeForce 2xx or Radeon HD 6xxx or better. Those are historical requirements, not a promise that the game will run on a current Windows installation. Steam’s client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024, but that client policy does not update the game’s old executable or its operating-system assumptions.

Legacy Edition’s recommended specification is Windows 11, an Intel i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, 16 GB RAM, an RTX 2060 or RX 6600, DirectX 12, and 25 GB storage. If you own Legacy Edition, use its own installation and support path. Do not edit an original-release file such as witn.exe unless that same file and path actually exist in your Legacy installation and a current Legacy-specific instruction confirms the change.
Define exactly what “won’t launch” means
Before trying a fix, write down the symptom and when it occurs. “My game will also not launch” can describe several different failures.
- Steam closes or returns to the Library before a game window appears.
- Steam displays an executable-update message and then quits.
- A window opens to a black or green screen and closes.
- The title screen appears, but the process closes after you press Start. This is the commonly reported “game crashes after hitting the start button” symptom.
- The game runs, but a controller moves the mouse pointer, produces duplicate inputs, or has unusably sensitive aiming.
Record your edition, Windows version and build, whether Steam says it is updating the executable, whether a window appears, and the exact point at which the process exits. These observations distinguish launch, rendering, file-integrity, and input symptoms; they do not prove a single underlying cause.

Use Steam’s ordinary launch flow first
The original PC manual says to launch from the Steam Library with Play. Steam may first install remaining content or perform an update step before the game runs. Let that process finish rather than closing Steam when the game window has not appeared immediately.
- Open Steam and select the correct game in Library.
- Click Play and wait for any “updating executable” or content-installation step to complete.
- If the process stops, restart Steam once and try the same launch again.
- Check that Steam is not paused, offline, or waiting for another download to finish.
This procedure is especially relevant to the 2011 release. It is not evidence that Legacy Edition has the same update sequence.
Make a short launch checklist
Use the same order each time so that every attempt is comparable. Note whether Steam remains open, whether the game process appears briefly in Task Manager, whether a window reaches the title screen, and whether the failure occurs only after a controller is connected. If the executable-update message appears, allow it to finish before judging the launch as failed. If the game reaches the menu but exits only after Start, record that separately from a failure that occurs before any window.
Verify the installed files
File verification is the safest repair to try after a failed launch. It can reacquire missing or damaged files without changing your save files or permanently altering executable settings.

- In Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files (the wording may appear as “Verify integrity of game files…”).
- Wait for Steam to finish. If it downloads replacements, allow the download to complete.
- Launch the game normally from the Library.
In one discussion about the original release, a player reported that verification reacquired two missing files and the game then ran. Other players reported that verification did not resolve their crashes. Treat the result as a diagnostic check, not a universal repair. If Steam reports that files could not be replaced, close other programs that may be holding the game open, restart Steam, and repeat the verification once before moving to compatibility experiments.
If verification finds nothing, that does not prove the executable is compatible with your Windows build; it only means Steam’s installed files match its expected files. Conversely, reacquired files do not prove that a later crash has the same cause. Test the ordinary Library launch again after verification and write down whether the failure point changed.
Test Windows executable settings one at a time (original release)
Community reports about app ID 32800 describe both successful and unsuccessful compatibility changes. None is an official, guaranteed fix. Make one change, test the game, and revert it before trying another. Stacking several modes makes it impossible to know which setting helped or caused a new problem.
Disable fullscreen optimizations
- In Steam Library, right-click the original game, choose Manage, then Browse local files.
- Locate
witn.exe. - Right-click it, choose Properties, and open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Disable fullscreen optimizations, choose Apply, and launch the game.
A player associated this setting with resolving a green-screen or Start-button crash. That is an individual report, not a confirmed fix for every Windows build. If nothing changes, clear the checkbox and test a different setting instead.
Test administrator rights only if needed
The same report suggested that running the executable as administrator might also be necessary. If you test it, use the Compatibility tab’s Run this program as an administrator option for one launch, then undo it if it has no effect. Administrator mode can change where a program writes files and should not be enabled reflexively.
Try Windows 7 compatibility as a separate experiment
Another participant suggested Windows 7 compatibility together with disabled fullscreen optimizations. Follow-up replies said crashes continued, so test Windows 7 mode by itself and do not treat it as authoritative:
- Open

- Apply, launch once, and note the result.
- Turn the option off if the crash remains or a new error appears.
Do not jump straight to Windows 95 mode
An older discussion mentioned Windows 95 compatibility, but that advice conflicts with the later Windows 7 suggestion and is anecdotal. If you experiment with it at all, change only that setting and be prepared to revert immediately. There is no evidence here that Windows 95 mode is a preferred or reliable solution.

Keep a reversible-settings record
Write down the original checkbox state before every test. Use one launch per change, then return to the previous state before trying another. If a setting produces a new error, restore the prior state rather than adding another compatibility layer. This controlled approach is slower than applying every suggestion at once, but it tells you which result belongs to which change.

Controller reports for the original release include a right stick moving the mouse pointer, menus behaving as though a mouse is active, unusually sensitive bow aiming, and otherwise partly normal controls. These symptoms can result from Steam Input and the game’s own controller handling both translating the same device.
Prepare the connection
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- In Steam, confirm that the controller is detected in Steam’s controller settings.
- Close other remapping utilities temporarily so only one input layer is translating the device.
If the same controller fails in several unrelated games, troubleshoot the cable, wireless pairing, batteries, firmware, or operating-system detection separately. That prevents you from attributing a general controller fault to this game.
Test the normal gamepad configuration
- In Steam Library, right-click the original game and choose Properties.
- Open the game’s Controller section.
- Choose the normal or standard gamepad configuration rather than a desktop or keyboard-and-mouse layout.
- Close Properties, launch the game, and test menus, movement, camera, and aiming.

After each configuration change, test the same four actions: navigate a menu, move the character, move the camera with the right stick, and aim with the bow. Check whether the mouse pointer moves when the stick moves and whether one button produces two commands. If only one game behaves incorrectly while the controller works elsewhere, continue with that game’s Steam Controller settings. If several games show the same symptoms, fix the connection or remapping layer first.
What to do on Windows 11
Windows 11 does not automatically make the 2011 release compatible. The original listing predates Windows 10 and Windows 11, and the community’s “Win 11 starting problems?” discussion contains mixed outcomes: some players reached the game after verification, while others still exited during the executable-update step or at launch.

When none of the checks works
Stop changing settings after you have completed the edition-appropriate sequence. Repeatedly layering compatibility modes, administrator rights, controller remappers, and third-party overlays can create new variables without addressing the original failure.

- The exact Steam product name and app ID.
- Your Windows edition and build, plus whether it is 64-bit.

Should you buy a different controller?
