This guide is for the LEGO Super Mario app and its Bluetooth-connected LEGO Peach and LEGO Luigi figures—not Nintendo’s separate Hello, Mario! app series. Work through the checks below in order, and use the figure-specific recovery steps only for the matching error or display symptom.
Start with Bluetooth and app permissions
- Check Bluetooth permission: If the LEGO app is stuck on a Bluetooth-permissions screen, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone or tablet, then close and relaunch the app.
- Allow Location Service if requested: If the app displays a Location Service permissions screen, enable Location Service for the app and relaunch it. Amazon Kids devices do not offer the required Location Service option and cannot run the app.
- Refresh Bluetooth after an update-related connection failure: Open your device’s Settings and Bluetooth controls, switch Bluetooth off, wait five seconds, then switch it back on. If the LEGO app still says the figure needs an update, tap Start and let the firmware update run again.

If the app says “Something went wrong”
Use this sequence if tapping Try again does not resolve the error. The factory reset is a separate recovery step, not the same as retrying a firmware update.
- Close and restart the LEGO Super Mario app.
- Remove the figure’s batteries, then reinsert them.
- Turn the figure on and disconnect it from the app.
- With the figure disconnected, hold its Power and Bluetooth buttons together for ten seconds.
- Wait for the figure to blink and show a device image on its belly. Reopen the app and reconnect the figure.
Those reset steps are LEGO’s instructions for this specific error. If the figure will not reset or reconnect, contact LEGO support rather than assuming the reset has repaired a hardware fault.

Fix common figure icons and display problems
A Bluetooth symbol stays on the figure
Connect the figure to the app and check for a firmware update. LEGO says updating usually clears the symbol. If it remains after the update, contact LEGO support.
A device image appears on the belly
LEGO says the figure’s initial firmware includes only action bricks for the Starter Course. Connect it to the app and update its firmware to add the relevant functionality.

The figure shows WTM, ATM, or STM
These messages indicate testing mode. Try LEGO’s first remedy: turn the figure off, remove any clothing, then turn it on again. If testing mode remains, turn it off, hold Power and Bluetooth for about ten seconds until its eyes blink, then open the app and perform the firmware restore. Contact LEGO if the issue continues.

Try a firmware update first. If that does not fix the display, LEGO describes an in-app Restore your LEGO Mario / LEGO Luigi / LEGO Peach function as a last resort. Keep the app open and the figure connected until restoration finishes; LEGO estimates that process takes about 20–30 minutes. If restoration fails or the display remains faulty, contact LEGO.

These minimums do not guarantee an optimal experience. LEGO says it can assure compatibility only for devices it actively tests, and its tested-device list can change without notice. LEGO’s troubleshooting article directs users to contact LEGO for further help when the listed fixes fail. A reset or firmware restore is not a guarantee of repair.
Can you use the LEGO figures without the app?
Yes. LEGO says the sets can be enjoyed without the app. The app adds interactive building instructions, score tracking, and creative play challenges, but losing app access does not necessarily prevent all play. See the LEGO Super Mario app page for its feature description.
