Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The warning usually means your phone’s internal storage is too full for an app download, update, or its temporary installation files—not that Android has run out of RAM. Open Settings → Storage, remove or move large files, empty trash, restart the phone, and try again. Google says downloads may fail when less than 1 GB is available, while phones can start experiencing broader problems when under 10% of storage remains; neither figure is a universal installation requirement.
Check the storage Android is actually using
Open Settings → Storage. Names vary by Samsung One UI, Pixel, Motorola and other Android versions, but look for Storage, not Memory or RAM. Storage holds apps, photos, videos, downloads, messages, offline media and system data. RAM is working memory used while apps run, so closing recent apps will not create meaningful internal storage.
Google’s current Play guidance treats less than 1 GB available as potentially too little for downloading or installing apps (Google Play Help). Google’s general Android troubleshooting also warns that problems can begin when less than 10% of storage is free (Android Help). An update can need temporary working space in addition to the size shown on its Play Store page, so there is no single safe buffer for every phone or app.
Open the largest category, or use Free up space, Clean, Manage storage or Browse. On supported Pixel phones, the documented path is Settings → Storage → Free up space → Browse (Pixel Phone Help). Confirm that you are freeing internal storage; an SD card can show plenty of capacity while an app still cannot install internally.

Free space quickly without risking important data
Delete or move large videos and photos
Start with camera videos, 4K or high-frame-rate recordings, screen recordings, messaging-app videos, duplicate photos and exported editing copies. If you use Google Photos, verify the correct account and that backup is complete before using its device-cleanup option. Backed-up copies remain available in Google Photos when the device is online, but deleting a local copy is still destructive if it was not backed up (Android Help).
Remove downloads and offline media
Inspect Downloads in your file manager or Files by Google. Then open the apps that created other downloads:
- YouTube, YouTube Music and streaming services: remove downloaded videos, songs and shows inside the app.
- Google Maps: delete offline maps you no longer need.
- Spotify and other music apps: remove downloaded albums or playlists.
- Browsers: delete downloaded installers, documents and media.
- Photo and video editors: remove confirmed exports and project caches.
- Messaging apps: use their storage manager to find forwarded videos and large conversations.
Google specifically recommends deleting downloaded files and removing offline media from the app that created it (Google Play Help).

Empty trash and recently deleted folders
Deleted items may continue consuming space in Google Photos Trash, a Gallery or file-manager recycle bin, Files by Google Trash, or an app’s deleted-media folder. Review each relevant app and permanently delete only items you no longer need. Retention periods differ by app.

In Settings → Apps or the storage manager, remove apps and games you no longer use. Games and editors are often large, although not every phone offers a reliable size sort. An uninstalled paid app can generally be downloaded again without paying again when it remains available and you use the same Google account (Google Play Help).
Archive apps instead of fully removing them
On supported devices, enable Play Store → profile picture → Settings → General → Automatically archive apps. Archiving removes the app while retaining its personal data and icon for later reinstallation; availability depends on Android and Play Store support (Google Play Help).

Copy files to another location
Connect the phone to a computer, copy large files, verify the copies open correctly, then delete the originals. A compatible microSD card can hold photos, videos, music and documents. Samsung documents an SD-card workflow through My Files for compatible Galaxy devices (Samsung Support). Do not assume every phone has a card slot, that apps can move to a card, or that a card configured as portable storage can host app installations.
Clear cache, not personal app data
For an unusually large app, use Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → [app] → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Labels differ by manufacturer. Cache is temporary data and may rebuild, so the space recovered can be modest (Google Play Help).
| Action | What it does | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Removes temporary files | Usually low risk; the app may be slower briefly |
| Clear storage/data | Deletes the app’s local database and settings | May remove logins, drafts, downloads, saves and offline content |
Use the app’s own cleanup controls first. Google warns that clearing storage permanently deletes app data (Google Play Help). Never clear data for a messaging, notes, game or authenticator app without confirming its backup and recovery options.

Retry safely, then repair Google Play
- Empty applicable trash folders.
- Restart the phone.
- Recheck Settings → Storage and retry the installation.
- If Play Store is the only place failing, close and reopen it, confirm a working Wi-Fi or mobile connection, install pending Android updates, and enable automatic date, time and time zone.
Google lists restarting, network checks, date/time checks and system updates among its download troubleshooting steps (Google Play Help).
Clear Play Store cache
Touch and hold Google Play Store → App info → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Reopen Play Store and try again. This is a common, low-risk fix for a stuck Play Store state (Google Play Help).
Clear Play Store storage only if necessary
Use the same screen and choose Clear storage or Clear data. This can reset Play Store settings such as parental controls and password protection, and you may need to accept its terms again (Google Play Help).

Update or roll back Play Store updates
For a malfunctioning Play Store, open App info → three-dot menu → Uninstall updates, reopen it, then choose profile picture → Settings → About → Play Store version → Update Play Store (Google Play Help).
Leave Google Play services for advanced troubleshooting
Do not routinely clear Google Play services data as a storage fix. Google warns it can affect passwords, transit cards, COVID cards, Google Pay cards and account authentication (Google Play Help). Use it only after less destructive steps or on manufacturer support’s advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If only one app will not install
When other apps install normally, open the app’s Play Store page and check whether it is available for your device. Google says the page indicates device availability (Google Play Help). The app may be incompatible, unavailable in your country, already involved in a pending update, or subject to its own storage requirement. If every other app works, contact that app’s developer rather than repeatedly deleting system data.
If Android reports full storage when space appears available
- Files may still be in Trash or inside an app’s offline area.
- The storage screen may not have refreshed after deletion; restart and check again.
- A faulty app may be generating data repeatedly.
- “System,” “Other” and “Apps” are calculated differently by manufacturers and can include legitimate protected data.
- You may have freed SD-card space while internal storage remains full.
- A temporary installation package or cache may be consuming space.
Free substantially more space than the displayed app download size, restart, recheck storage, clear Play Store cache, and install available Android or manufacturer updates. Do not delete arbitrary folders under /Android, /data or other protected locations; modern Android restricts many of them, and indiscriminate deletion can break apps or erase irreplaceable files. Android may remove some cache files under pressure, but its developer documentation says users should not rely on that as complete cleanup (Android Developers).

Factory reset is a last resort
Consider a reset only when storage accounting is clearly abnormal, space keeps disappearing, the phone is unstable, and you have completed a verified backup or a manufacturer has recommended it. A reset removes installed apps and local data. Data in your Google Account may be restored, but apps and their associated data are uninstalled (Android Help).
Before resetting, verify backups of:
- Photos, videos and files on internal storage and the microSD card
- Contacts and messages where applicable
- WhatsApp or other messaging backups
- Authenticator codes, recovery keys and password-manager access
- Banking and payment-app reauthentication details
- Device encryption or recovery credentials
Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier before erasing a work-managed device or one with unexplained storage changes.
Quick Recap
Prevent the warning from returning
- Review Settings → Storage monthly and remove offline downloads you have finished.
- Back up camera media before deleting local copies.
- Keep a meaningful free-space buffer rather than waiting until the phone is nearly full; Google’s 10% figure is a general warning, not a universal app-install rule.
- Enable automatic app archiving where supported.
- Move large media to a verified computer backup, cloud service or compatible SD card.
- Check available internal space before recording long videos or downloading large games.
