0x8007042 is not a complete Windows error code. The missing final character matters: Microsoft Q&A reports use the shortened text for Windows Update, Internet Connections, and Windows Firewall problems. Copy the full hexadecimal code and note what failed before changing services. Then use the matching repair path below.
Why “0x8007042” is ambiguous
Windows error codes normally contain a complete hexadecimal value, but a dialog title, search result, or copied message can omit the final digit or letter. That leaves 0x8007042 as an incomplete fragment rather than a unique diagnosis. The same shortened wording appears in separate Microsoft Q&A discussions involving Windows Update, an Internet Connections check, and Windows Firewall startup.

Those situations can look similar because all depend on Windows services. They do not have the same remedy, however. Restarting update components when the actual failure is the firewall can waste time or make diagnosis harder. Treat the missing character as the first problem to solve.

First, recover the complete code
- Reopen the original message. Check the Windows dialog, Settings notification, Microsoft Store message, or installer window that displayed the error.
- Copy every character. Include the
0xprefix, all digits, and any final letter. Do not rely on a search-result title that may have been shortened. - Check Event Viewer if the dialog is gone. Look for an entry created at the time of the failure and record the complete hexadecimal value and the related service or component.
- Inspect the relevant log. For an update failure, use the update or installation log available on the affected computer. For a connectivity test, record the test name and the network state shown at the time.
- Write down the operation that failed. Examples include installing updates, downloading through Microsoft Store, running an Internet Connections troubleshooter, or starting Windows Defender Firewall.
Do not assume that every result containing 0x8007042 has one meaning. The operation and the full code determine which branch is appropriate.

Choose the repair branch from the symptom
| What failed | First place to check | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update will not run or is disabled | Windows Update service in Services | Startup controls may be locked by policy or security software. |
| Internet Connections or network detection fails | Network List Service and related networking services | Restart the service only when the symptom is connectivity or network identification. |
| Windows Firewall will not start | Firewall-specific troubleshooting | The fuller code may be 0x8007042c, not a Windows Update error. |
This table is a triage aid, not a claim that the shortened text identifies a single component. If the symptom does not fit one row, return to the original message and capture more context before editing services.
Open Services with the required permissions
Service changes require an account that is allowed to administer the computer. Sign in with an administrator account, or have an administrator perform the steps. If a control is unavailable, do not work around it by guessing registry edits.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - When the Services console opens, locate the service named in the branch below.
- Read its Status and Startup Type before making a change. Record what you see so you can describe it if support is needed.
- If the service is stopped and the context menu permits it, choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start only when the service is clearly stopped and the operation matches your symptom.
Microsoft Q&A guidance specifically calls for administrator elevation when using a batch-file method to repair Windows Update. That requirement does not mean every service should be forced to start; it means Windows must approve the change in an elevated session.

Check Windows Update
Use this branch when the failure occurred while Windows was checking for, downloading, or installing updates, or when the Windows Update service appears disabled.
- In
services.msc, locate Windows Update. - Read the status and startup controls. If the service is stopped and the controls are available, use the context menu to restart it.
- Close Services and retry the same update operation from Windows Settings.
- If the error returns, capture the complete code and the update history entry rather than searching for the shortened fragment again.
A Microsoft Q&A report describes Windows Update as disabled or locked in Services. When startup controls are greyed out, the computer may be governed by device-management policy or security software. Confirm that possibility with the person or organization managing the PC. Avoid changing registry values simply to make a locked control editable; an enforced policy can be restored at the next policy refresh and an incorrect edit can create a separate service problem.
The same guidance describes an administrator-run batch-file method. Because the shortened code does not identify one universal script and the exact commands depend on the complete error and Windows configuration, use only a script from a trusted, documented source that matches your full code. Run it from an elevated administrator session and read what each command changes before approving it.
Internet Connections and network-detection branch
Restart Network List Service
Choose this path when the Internet Connections troubleshooter fails, Windows cannot identify the current network, or the message appears during a network-availability check.
- Open
services.mscwith Win+R. - Locate Network List Service.
- Check whether it is running. If the context menu allows it, right-click the service and choose Restart.
- Retry the Internet Connections check or the operation that originally failed.
A Microsoft Q&A volunteer moderator gives the same direct instruction: “In the Services manager, locate Network List Service. Right-click on it and choose Restart.” — S. Sengupta, Microsoft MVP/Volunteer Moderator, 2023.
Inspect related services
If restarting Network List Service does not restore detection, inspect the related services named in the same troubleshooting guidance:
- Network Connections
- DCOM Server Process Launcher
- Windows Defender Firewall
- BitLocker Drive Encryption Service
For each one, note its status and whether the console permits a restart. Do not stop a running service merely to test it. If a service is stopped, start it only when doing so is consistent with the reported symptom and your account has permission. Retry the original network operation after each deliberate change so you know which action affected the result.
A network-identification failure does not automatically mean that the physical adapter, cable, or wireless access point is defective. The evidence for this shortened code points first to Windows service state. Check physical connectivity separately if the computer remains offline, but do not buy an adapter or recovery device as a substitute for identifying the complete code.
Windows Firewall branch
Confirm that Firewall startup is the actual symptom
Use this branch only when Windows Firewall will not start, cannot be enabled, or reports a firewall-specific failure. A separate Microsoft Q&A thread uses the shortened title but associates the condition with the fuller code 0x8007042c.

Follow Firewall-specific troubleshooting for a confirmed firewall code. Do not apply Windows Update cache or update-reset instructions simply because the search text contains 0x8007042; the shorter title is reused across contexts.
What to do when a service is locked
A greyed-out startup setting or a service that immediately returns to its previous state is a diagnostic clue. It can indicate organization policy, mobile-device management, security software, dependency failure, or insufficient permissions.
- Verify that you are using an administrator account.
- Record the service name, status, startup type, and any message shown when you attempt a change.
- On a work or school computer, ask the administrator whether policy intentionally controls the service.
- Temporarily pause troubleshooting rather than editing the registry without a documented procedure for the complete code.
- Check whether another service named in the relevant branch is stopped before assuming the locked service itself is the root cause.
If security software controls the service, use its documented settings or contact its administrator. Do not disable protective components as a blind experiment.

After a service change, repeat the exact operation that produced the message. A successful restart in Services is not proof that Windows Update, network detection, or Firewall has been repaired.
- Close and reopen the affected Settings page or troubleshooter.
- Run the same check, update, download, or Firewall action once.
- Record whether the operation completed, produced a new code, or failed with the same code.
- If it fails, capture the complete new message and the time of failure.
- Undo only a change you made deliberately and that clearly caused a new problem; do not randomly toggle additional services.
A new full code can be more useful than the original shortened title because it identifies the next branch. Keep the original and new messages together when asking Microsoft support, an administrator, or a qualified technician for help.
Common mistakes to avoid
Searching only for the shortened string
Search results for 0x8007042 combine unrelated Windows Update, network, and Firewall cases. Include the complete code and the failed operation in any search or support request.
Changing services without noting the starting state
Without a before-and-after record, you cannot tell whether a restart helped or whether a later change introduced the new failure. Write down status and startup type first.

Applying the wrong branch
Firewall startup, network identification, and Windows Update have overlapping dependencies but different troubleshooting goals. Match the branch to the operation that failed.
Assuming hardware is the answer
The documented first checks are Windows services and administrator-approved commands. A cable, adapter, generic repair USB, or other physical purchase cannot recover the missing final character or select the correct service branch.
When to escalate
Seek administrator or professional help when the full code remains unavailable, service controls are locked by policy, a service will not stay running, or the same failure returns after the matching service check. Provide the complete code, the failed operation, Windows edition and version, service statuses, exact messages, and the time of the latest failure. This information is more actionable than reporting only “missing net” or “0x8007042.”

The available Microsoft Q&A material documents practical service steps, but it does not establish 0x8007042 as a single official Windows code. It also provides no reliable frequency, success-rate, or affected-device statistics. Treat any claim that one command or product fixes every instance as unverified.
Quick Recap
After you have completed the built-in service checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. It can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL files, and also offers settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks, and an app-crash log. A category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no repair utility fixes every crash.
