The IAStorIcon.exe application error usually comes from Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST)—its monitor service, an outdated or mismatched RST package, or a compatibility issue—not from proof that your SSD or hard drive has failed. Start by resetting the RST service. If that does not clear the message, install the RST package made for your exact computer model and Windows version. A Windows 11 launch failure after a “Volumes has degraded” notification follows a separate, documented UAC issue and has its own workaround.
What IAStorIcon.exe is and what the error means
IAStorIcon.exe is the notification and monitoring component associated with Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Intel identifies it alongside IAStorUI.exe, IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe and iaStorA.sys as components related to the Intel RST monitor service. The executable normally appears because RST is installed to manage or monitor storage-controller features such as RAID or the platform’s storage configuration.

An application-error dialog means that this RST component could not start or communicate correctly. Common causes are a stopped RST service, an RST package that does not match the computer’s chipset or Windows release, or a platform-specific compatibility problem. The dialog by itself does not establish that the storage drive has failed. Do not replace a drive solely because IAStorIcon.exe reports an application error; first repair the RST installation and then investigate drive health separately if Windows reports storage symptoms.

Install the latest correct RST package; if crashes continue, collect a complete memory dump for support. | The storage-controller driver is implicated, but the dump is needed for a continuing crash diagnosis. |
Step 1: reset the Intel Rapid Storage Technology service
Intel lists the service reset as the first solution for an RST crash or a “service is not running” message. It does not remove your storage driver or change your data.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services list, locate Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
- Open its Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Save the change. If the service is stopped, use the available Start control in the same properties window, then close Services.
- Restart Windows and check whether the IAStorIcon.exe message returns.
If the service is already set to Automatic and starts normally, or if the error comes back immediately after the restart, do not keep repeating the same change. Move to the package-repair procedure.
Step 2: install the RST package that matches your computer
On an OEM laptop or a prebuilt desktop, use the manufacturer’s support page first. Computer makers can customize Intel’s generic RST package for a particular motherboard, chipset, storage mode and Windows release. A generic Intel installer may be newer yet still be the wrong package for that platform.
Find the exact model and Windows release
- Read the model designation from the computer’s case label, firmware screen or Windows system information. Do not rely on a family name alone when several revisions exist.
- Confirm whether the installed system is Windows 10 or Windows 11 and note the release shown in Windows settings.
- On the manufacturer’s support site, look under storage, chipset or Rapid Storage Technology downloads. Select the package that lists the exact model and your Windows version.
If the manufacturer does not provide an RST package for the model, use the current package from Intel’s Download Center. Treat Intel’s generic package as a fallback, not as a universal replacement for an OEM-customized driver.

Prepare before removing the existing package
Save open work and make sure you can identify the correct replacement package before uninstalling anything. RST can be tied to the storage-controller mode selected by the system firmware. Do not change the firmware’s SATA, RAID or storage mode merely to silence the icon; that is a separate configuration change and can prevent Windows from booting.
Do not substitute a registry cleaner or an unrelated automatic driver updater. Those tools do not establish that the package matches the computer’s model and chipset, which is the central requirement for this repair.
Remove and reinstall the RST device/software
Intel’s documented reinstall path is to stop the relevant RST services if necessary, remove the current device in Device Manager, and then run the new installer. The exact labels can differ by Windows version and OEM package, so read each prompt rather than selecting options by habit.

- Open Services with
services.msc. If an RST service is running and the installer requires it to be stopped, open its properties and choose Stop. Leave the startup setting available for the replacement installation. - Open Device Manager. Expand the storage-controller or related device category and select the Intel RST device identified by the OEM instructions.
- Choose the device’s uninstall or remove option. Do not remove an unrelated disk, controller or system device because its name merely contains the word “storage.”
- Restart if Windows or the installer requests it.
- Run the downloaded OEM installer for the exact model. If no OEM package exists, run the current Intel package instead.
- Restart Windows when installation completes, even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
- Return to
services.mscand verify that Intel Rapid Storage Technology is present and configured for Automatic startup.
If Windows fails to boot after a controller-driver change, use the manufacturer’s recovery procedure or Windows recovery environment and return to the last known working driver. Do not keep uninstalling storage devices without a matching replacement package.

Windows 11: the “Volumes has degraded” launch failure
Intel documents a specific Windows 11 problem in which the Intel RST graphical interface fails to launch after a Volumes has degraded notification. Intel attributes this case to “a change in Windows 11* UAC access privileges.” The documented affected releases are Windows 11 24H2, 23H2 and 22H2, and Intel’s article was last reviewed on June 17, 2025. Intel reports 100% reproducibility for that specific scenario; that figure must not be generalized to every IAStorIcon.exe error.
Apply the documented workaround:
- Restart the computer normally.
- After signing in, open the Windows All Apps list.
- Launch Intel Rapid Storage Technology manually from that list.
If the interface opens after the restart, the failed automatic launch was the UAC-related symptom described above. A degraded-volume notification still deserves attention inside RST; the workaround only restores access to the interface and does not repair a genuinely degraded array or volume.
When the error is accompanied by a blue screen
A crash that names iaStorAC.sys needs a more careful escalation than a startup icon error. Intel’s guidance is to install the latest RST package that matches the system first. If the blue screen remains, configure Windows to create a Complete memory dump and provide the resulting file to support.
Configure a complete dump
- Open Windows’ advanced system settings and the Startup and Recovery settings.
- Under the debugging or dump-writing option, select Complete memory dump.
- Confirm the dump path and leave enough free space on the system drive for the file.
- Apply the setting and reproduce the crash only when necessary. Repeated forced crashes can lose unsaved work.
Intel identifies the typical dump location as %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP, usually C:WindowsMEMORY.DMP. Keep the complete file intact when sending it to support; a screenshot of the blue screen does not contain the same diagnostic information.

Choosing between an OEM and Intel package
| Choice | Use it when | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer’s RST/chipset package | The computer is an OEM laptop or prebuilt PC and a package is listed for the exact model. | It reflects the maker’s customized controller, firmware and Windows support. | The package may not be the newest Intel release, and it may be offered only for specific Windows versions. |
| Intel generic RST package | No suitable OEM package is available for the exact computer. | It provides Intel’s current generally available package. | It may not include the OEM’s customizations and is not automatically compatible with every Intel-based computer. |
| Service reset without reinstalling | The message says the service is not running and the installed package otherwise matches the system. | Fast and low-impact; it changes the service startup state rather than replacing the driver. | It cannot correct a mismatched, damaged or obsolete package. |
Use the exact model and chipset support, the Windows version, the presence of OEM customization and the symptom type—service failure, GUI launch failure or blue screen—to decide which branch applies.
What not to do
- Do not assume IAStorIcon.exe proves that a disk is dying. The error is commonly tied to the RST software or service.
- Do not download a package for a similar-looking model. Small platform differences can determine whether the controller driver works.
- Do not replace the OEM package with a generic one as the first step when the manufacturer provides a model-specific release.
- Do not delete IAStorIcon.exe manually or disable random startup entries without understanding the RST installation. Removing the icon does not repair the underlying service or driver.
- Do not change storage-controller mode in firmware as a troubleshooting shortcut. That setting can affect whether Windows starts.
- Do not use registry cleaners or unrelated driver-updater utilities in place of the OEM or Intel package.
- Do not generalize the Windows 11 “100% reproducibility” statement to all IAStorIcon.exe errors; it applies only to Intel’s documented degraded-volume launch scenario.
Verification checklist after repair
- The computer starts without the IAStorIcon.exe application-error dialog.
- Intel Rapid Storage Technology appears in Services and has Automatic startup.
- The RST interface opens from the Start menu when launched manually.
- Device Manager shows the intended Intel RST controller without a warning symbol.
- Windows does not repeatedly report a degraded volume or produce a blue screen.
- If a blue screen persists, a complete dump is available at the configured path for support analysis.
If only the icon disappears but the RST service, controller or volume still reports a fault, the underlying issue is not resolved. Conversely, if storage works normally and the error stops after the service or package repair, no drive replacement is justified by the original icon error alone.
When to escalate
Contact the computer manufacturer when its model-specific package is unavailable, the installer rejects the model, or Windows becomes unbootable after the controller-driver change. Contact Intel or the relevant support channel with the exact computer model, Windows release, RST package version, complete error text and any complete memory dump when the problem is a continuing iaStorAC.sys blue screen. Those details distinguish an RST service problem from a controller, firmware or operating-system fault.
