How to Fix “The Disk Is Write Protected” on a SanDisk USB

The message means Windows or macOS has mounted your SanDisk storage as read-only, so new files, edits and deletions are blocked. Start by copying every readable file somewhere safe, then test the USB path and clear only a reversible software attribute. Formatting, cleaning or repartitioning can permanently erase data, so those steps belong only after your files are secured.

If the same drive remains read-only on different ports and computers, the flash memory or controller may be protecting itself because it is failing. At that point, prioritize data recovery or replacement rather than repeatedly forcing writes.

What “write protected” means

Write protection is a read-only state intended to prevent data loss. You can usually open and copy files, but the operating system refuses operations that change the drive: creating folders, saving edits, deleting files, formatting or repartitioning. On Windows the wording is commonly “The disk is write protected”; macOS may report that the disk is read only.

That state can come from a physical lock, a Windows policy, a software attribute, a faulty USB path or a failing flash drive. The safest fix depends on whether the files still matter, whether the drive works on another computer and whether the computer is managed by an employer or school.

Protect the files before troubleshooting

If the SanDisk drive still opens, copy important files now to an internal disk or a different external device. Copy rather than move, and open several copied files to confirm that they are usable. If a copy fails, note the filename and continue with the other readable files; do not repeatedly retry a failing drive for hours.

Do not start with clean, repartitioning, low-level utilities or formatting when the contents are valuable. SanDisk describes formatting as destructive and irreversible:

“The process is Data Destructive and cannot be undone. ALL THE DATA ON THE DRIVE WILL BE LOST!”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the original drive unchanged if the files are irreplaceable. Every write attempt can make later recovery more difficult, especially when the device is already unstable.

Check for a physical lock

A standard USB thumb drive normally has no user-operated write-protection switch. SD and microSD cards do: inspect the card and its SD adapter for a small lock slider and move it fully to the unlocked position. A loose or damaged adapter can keep reporting a locked state, so test the card in another adapter or reader if available.

Do not pry open a thumb-drive enclosure or force a switch that is not designed to move. Physical damage can turn a recoverable problem into a lost connection.

Rule out the USB port, cable and computer

  1. Safely eject the drive, unplug it and connect it to a different USB port. A rear motherboard port can behave differently from a front-panel hub; avoid unpowered hubs during testing.
  2. Try the SanDisk device on another computer. If it is an external drive or card reader that uses a detachable cable, test another known-good cable as well.
  3. Check whether files can be read on the second system. Do not format if another computer offers to initialize or format the device; cancel that prompt until your data is copied.
  4. Compare the result. A drive that writes normally elsewhere points to the original computer, port, policy or driver. A drive that stays read-only everywhere is more likely to have a device-level problem.

These tests are low risk and should happen before registry changes or destructive commands.

Inspect and clear the Windows read-only attribute with DiskPart

DiskPart can show whether Windows has set a software read-only flag. The command changes disk attributes, not the health of the flash memory, so it is a reasonable reversible test after your backup.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Command Prompt as administrator. In the Start menu, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
  3. Enter diskpart, then press Enter.
  4. Enter list disk. Compare each disk’s capacity with the SanDisk drive. Do not guess from its position in the list.
  5. Enter select disk <number>, replacing the placeholder with the SanDisk disk number.
  6. Enter attributes disk and read the output. It reports whether the disk is currently read-only and whether a read-only state is active.
  7. If you selected the correct disk, enter attributes disk clear readonly.
  8. Enter attributes disk again to verify the result, then enter exit twice to leave DiskPart and Command Prompt.

Selecting the wrong disk can affect another drive. Confirm the capacity at both list disk and select disk stages, unplug other removable drives if that makes identification clearer, and never run clean merely to make the warning disappear.

Reconnect the SanDisk device and try creating a small test folder. If writing works, copy your files elsewhere and consider replacing the drive if it has shown unexplained read-only behavior. If the attribute will not clear, clears but returns, or the drive remains read-only, continue with the checks below.

When DiskPart cannot clear read-only

A policy is locking removable storage

Windows can mark removable USB storage as locked through local or domain policy even when the device has no physical switch. This is common on work, school and shared computers. A policy may also reapply after restart, so a registry or Group Policy edit that appears to work temporarily is not a lasting solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a managed computer, ask the organization’s IT administrator to review its removable-storage policy. Explain whether you need to read files, write files or copy data off the device; those permissions may be governed separately. Do not repeatedly change registry values on a managed system, because the setting can be restored and the change may violate organizational rules.

A security or storage program is holding the volume

Close applications that may have files open, including backup, synchronization, encryption and media-management software. Eject the drive, restart Windows and test it before launching those applications again. If the behavior returns only when one program runs, consult that program’s administrator rather than altering the disk.

The account lacks permission

Permission errors normally affect a folder or volume rather than the entire physical disk. Test a new folder at the drive’s root and inspect the exact Windows error. If every write operation reports that the disk is write protected, treat it as a disk, policy or hardware issue instead of changing individual file permissions.

macOS: confirm whether the volume is read-only

macOS may display “disk is read only” for the same underlying conditions. First copy the files, then eject and reconnect the SanDisk drive, test another Mac and, for a reader or external enclosure, test another cable or adapter. Check an SD or microSD lock switch if one is present.

Do not erase the volume in Disk Utility while you still need its files. Erasing is the Mac equivalent of formatting and removes the existing data. If the device mounts read-only on multiple Macs and PCs, the cross-platform result points away from one operating-system setting and toward the drive, its adapter or its controller.

Recognize signs of a failing SanDisk drive

Flash storage can enter a protective read-only mode when the number of good memory blocks falls below an internal threshold or when corruption affects duplicated storage blocks. The purpose is to let you read what remains instead of allowing further writes to worsen the damage. The exact threshold and failure rate are not published as a general percentage, so a read-only state is a warning, not a usable estimate of remaining life.

Suspect device failure when several of these are true:

  • The drive is read-only on more than one computer and USB port.
  • DiskPart cannot clear the attribute, or the attribute returns after reconnecting.
  • The capacity is displayed inconsistently, folders take an unusually long time to open, or files produce read errors.
  • The drive disconnects, reconnects or becomes unusually hot during simple reads.
  • An SD card works in one adapter but not another, or the card and adapter show different lock behavior.

Once those symptoms appear, stop trying to force a write. Read and copy the data while the device still mounts, then choose recovery or replacement.

Formatting: only after the data is safe

Formatting can restore a usable file system when the problem is logical and the drive hardware is healthy, but it destroys the existing file structure and contents. It is appropriate only when you have a verified copy or have accepted permanent data loss.

In Windows, you can right-click the drive in File Explorer and choose Format, or use Disk Management to delete and recreate a volume. Follow the prompts for a file system compatible with the devices that will use the drive. If Windows refuses to format because the disk remains write-protected, do not escalate immediately to repeated clean commands; that refusal is evidence that a policy or hardware fault may still be present.

DiskPart’s clean command removes partition information and is destructive. It does not repair worn flash cells or a failing controller. Use it only when the data is backed up, you have positively identified the disk number and you are deliberately rebuilding the drive. If the device remains read-only after a clean attempt, replacement is usually more sensible than further low-level experimentation.

Choose recovery or replacement

When the files are unique

Prioritize copying and recovery over restoring write access. SanDisk directs users toward RescuePRO, other third-party recovery software or a professional data-recovery partner, depending on the situation. Recovery software should be used on a clone or image when possible, not by repeatedly writing to the original device. Check current licensing, provider availability and terms before paying; those details vary by region and date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SanDisk does not perform data recovery itself. If the drive is unstable, disconnecting or physically damaged, a professional service may be safer than repeated home attempts. Tell the provider that the drive is read-only and list the steps already taken, including any formatting or DiskPart commands.

When the data is already secured

If you have a verified backup and the SanDisk device remains read-only across systems, stop investing time in software fixes. Check the purchase documentation and warranty status for a possible replacement. A replacement is the practical endpoint for a flash drive whose controller has entered permanent protection or whose memory has exhausted usable blocks.

When the drive works on another computer

Keep the drive connected to the computer where it writes, copy the data, and troubleshoot the original computer’s port, policy or removable-storage configuration. An organization-managed machine may require IT to change policy; a personal computer may need its USB configuration or security software reviewed. Do not assume the SanDisk hardware is healthy simply because one computer accepts writes.

Decision guide

Situation Next action Risk and reversibility Likely endpoint
Files are important and the drive still mounts Copy and verify files before any repair Low risk; reversible copying Protected backup, then troubleshooting or recovery
SD or microSD card has a lock slider Move the card or adapter switch to unlock and retest Low risk Writing restored if the switch caused the lock
Read-only on one computer only Test another port, computer, cable or adapter; ask IT about policy Low risk Host or policy fix
DiskPart reports a read-only attribute Verify the disk number, then run attributes disk clear readonly Attribute change is reversible; wrong disk selection is dangerous Writing may return
Policy reapplies after restart Have the administrator review removable-storage policy Do not fight a managed setting with repeated registry edits Authorized policy change or continued restriction
Read-only across computers, with read errors or disconnects Copy what you can, then stop forcing writes Further writes can reduce recovery prospects Professional recovery or replacement
Data is backed up and the drive is still unusable Format only if you accept erasure; otherwise replace it Formatting and cleaning are destructive Rebuilt drive or warranty replacement

Habits that reduce repeat problems

  • Use the operating system’s eject or safely-remove function before unplugging the drive.
  • Keep at least one additional copy of irreplaceable files; a single flash drive is not a backup.
  • Do not fill removable flash storage to its limit when you can leave working space available.
  • Label cards and adapters separately so a faulty adapter is not mistaken for a failed card.
  • When a drive first becomes read-only, copy its contents promptly instead of waiting for it to become unreadable.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. It has a two-day free trial without a credit card and then requires a subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every drive-level failure.

Bottom line

Back up first, test the physical lock and USB path, then inspect the correct disk with DiskPart and clear only the reversible read-only attribute. If policy is responsible, involve the administrator. If the SanDisk remains read-only everywhere, treat that as possible flash or controller failure: recover the files while it still reads, then replace the drive rather than repeatedly formatting or forcing writes.
