Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED is Windows stop code 0x000000EF. It appears when an essential Windows process terminates or becomes corrupted, so Windows stops to protect the system. The code does not identify one failed part: a bad driver, damaged system files, failing memory, incompatible hardware, a problematic update, or other software can all be involved. Work through the least-destructive steps first. If Windows will not stay running, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), starting with rollback options before resetting or reinstalling.
What CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED means
Windows depends on several processes that must remain alive during startup and normal operation. Microsoft lists examples such as csrss.exe, wininit.exe, logonui.exe, smss.exe, services.exe, conhost.exe and winlogon.exe. If one terminates unexpectedly or its files become corrupted, Windows issues bug check 0x000000EF rather than continuing in an unsafe state.

The blue screen is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. A single appearance after a power failure may be different from a restart loop that began after a driver or Windows update. Crash dumps, Event Viewer entries, memory tests and hardware diagnostics are what narrow the cause.
Common cause groups
- Drivers: A newly installed, incompatible or corrupted driver can terminate a system process or make it inaccessible.
- Windows components: Interrupted updates, disk errors or malware-related damage can leave system files missing or corrupted.
- Hardware: Defective RAM, a failing storage device, an unstable device, or recently added hardware can trigger the stop.
- Firmware and compatibility: Out-of-date BIOS or firmware, or hardware that is not compatible with the current Windows build, can cause repeated failures.
- Other software: Security, storage, tuning or system-level utilities can conflict with Windows. A recent installation or change is an important clue, but not proof.
Before you start: protect data and record the pattern
If Windows still reaches the desktop, copy important documents to another drive or a cloud location before making changes. If the machine is repeatedly crashing, avoid repeatedly forcing power-offs while a disk is writing. Note when the problem started, whether it follows an update or hardware change, and whether the stop occurs during startup, sign-in or normal use. This information helps you choose a rollback instead of a more destructive repair.

Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, printers and recently installed internal hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display and the storage device containing Windows connected. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can originate in a device, its driver or software; removing a recent change is a quick way to test that possibility.
Fixes to try when Windows starts
1. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the blue screen stops there, a nonessential driver, startup program or service is more likely than a core hardware failure.
- Open Settings and select System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10).
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- At the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
Use Safe Mode to remove a recently installed driver or application, undo a tuning change, and copy data. Do not assume that a successful Safe Mode session proves the hardware is healthy; it only means the limited startup set did not reproduce the failure.
2. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories and look for a yellow warning icon, an entry that appeared after the problem began, or a device whose status reports an error.

- Open the device’s Properties and read the message on the General tab.
- On the Driver tab, use Roll Back Driver when the issue followed a driver update and the option is available.
- Use Update Driver with a driver supplied by the device or PC manufacturer. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different model or Windows edition.
- For a newly attached or clearly suspect device, choose Disable device as a reversible test. Uninstalling a device removes its current driver package; restart afterward and reinstall an appropriate package if needed.
Do not disable critical storage, chipset or boot devices at random. If you are unsure which entry changed, record the driver version and date first so you can reverse the change.
3. Remove or roll back a recent software change
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), sort by install date, and remove software installed immediately before the crashes. Pay particular attention to programs that add system services, virtual disks, low-level monitoring or custom security filters. Restart normally after each removal rather than changing several variables at once.
4. Install pending Windows updates and check free space
Go to Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Updates can correct known compatibility and system-file problems, although a crash that began immediately after one may call for the WinRE Uninstall updates option instead.

5. Repair the Windows component store and system files
Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC), as Microsoft recommends. Sign in with an administrator account, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and execute these commands one at a time:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthSFC /scannow
Wait for each command to finish; a scan can appear paused for several minutes. DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces missing or corrupted copies. Restart after both commands, then test the activity that previously caused the stop. If DISM cannot complete while Windows is running, repeat the repair from an administrator Command Prompt in WinRE, where the Windows volume may have a different drive letter.
6. Test the memory
Press Windows key + R, enter mdsched.exe, and choose Restart now and check for problems. Windows Memory Diagnostic runs before Windows loads. After the restart, open Event Viewer, choose Windows Logs > System, select Find, and search for MemoryDiagnostics-Results.
A reported error is a strong reason to power off, reseat or replace memory according to the PC manufacturer’s instructions, and test modules individually if the design permits. A clean result does not prove RAM is perfect; intermittent faults can require the manufacturer’s extended diagnostic or repeated testing.

7. Check Event Viewer, storage and firmware
Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > System around the exact time of the blue screen. Look for critical or error events immediately before the restart, noting the source, event ID and affected device or service. One isolated warning is not automatically the cause; a repeated pattern that matches every crash is more useful.
Run the hardware diagnostics supplied by the PC manufacturer, including storage tests where available. Check the manufacturer’s support page for BIOS and device-firmware updates that match the exact model. Keep the computer connected to reliable power during firmware updates, and do not interrupt one in progress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Windows is stuck in a restart loop
Windows can enter WinRE automatically after several failed starts. You can also reach it from a working sign-in screen by holding Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If neither is possible, interrupt startup only as a last resort: turn the PC on and, when Windows begins loading, hold the power button to turn it off; repeat until Preparing Automatic Repair appears. Repeated forced shutdowns can risk data loss, so use this method only to reach recovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry Safe Mode from WinRE
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4/F4 for Safe Mode or 5/F5 for networking.
- Undo the recent driver, application or hardware change, then restart normally.
Uninstall a recent update
In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Select Uninstall latest quality update first. If the problem began with a larger version upgrade and the option is offered, use Uninstall latest feature update. This option is appropriate when timing strongly implicates an update; it does not repair unrelated hardware or file damage.

Use System Restore
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, select an account, and choose a restore point dated before the crashes. System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, installed programs and settings without affecting personal files. It is available on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but only if restore protection had created a point. Review the affected programs list before confirming.
Reset this PC only after rollback options fail
From WinRE select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Keep my files reinstalls Windows while retaining personal files, but removes applications and many settings. Remove everything erases personal files, applications and settings. Back up data first whenever the disk can still be accessed, and make sure you know the sign-in credentials and application installers you will need afterward.
Reinstall from installation media as a last resort
If reset cannot complete or Windows remains unusable, create Windows installation media on another computer and boot the affected PC from it. A USB flash drive for Windows recovery media must meet the requirements of the chosen Windows version and the PC’s firmware; check Microsoft’s current instructions and the manufacturer’s boot-menu key. A clean reinstall removes everything on the Windows installation, so copy files first and disconnect other internal drives if the installer could otherwise select the wrong disk.

When the stop code keeps returning
Compare several crash dumps
If Windows creates minidumps, do not rely on one file. Multiple dumps can reveal whether the same driver or module appears repeatedly. Advanced users can inspect them with Windows debugging tools, but a dump naming a module is a lead, not conclusive proof: the named code may have been damaged by memory, storage or another driver.
Correlate logs with physical tests
Match the timestamp in each dump to Event Viewer and to the action that preceded the crash. If failures occur only under heavy memory use, prioritize RAM and motherboard diagnostics. If they occur during disk activity, prioritize storage health and firmware. If they began immediately after one driver installation and stop in Safe Mode, roll back that driver before replacing hardware.
Escalate when the evidence points to hardware
Stop using the PC for important work if diagnostics report uncorrectable storage errors, repeated memory errors, burning smells, unusual clicking, or power instability. A repair shop or the PC manufacturer can test parts, recover data and verify a replacement without risking further file damage. Keep the exact stop code, dump files, Event Viewer details and the list of changes you already tried.
After Windows is stable
- Reconnect removed devices one at a time and restart between changes so the trigger is identifiable.
- Keep Windows, BIOS and device drivers matched to the PC manufacturer’s model and supported Windows edition.
- Maintain adequate free space and a current backup; a repair that preserves files is not a substitute for a backup.
- Do not repeatedly install different driver packages or registry “fixes” without recording what changed.
There is no universal one-click cure for 0x000000EF. The reliable approach is to identify the change or component that correlates with the crash, repair Windows files in the correct order, test memory and hardware, and use WinRE rollback options before a reset or clean installation.
