“Can’t Connect” is a general failure message, not one universal HBO Max error code. The cause may be your internet connection, an outdated app or device, damaged cache or cookies, a VPN or proxy, an unsupported device or region, or a provider subscription that has not been activated correctly.
Start by testing another website and another device, then disable VPN or proxy services, restart your network and streaming device, update HBO Max and its host device, and sign in again. The sections below identify the failing layer before you take more disruptive steps.
Identify where the connection fails
Note exactly when the message appears. Launching the app, signing in, connecting a cable or mobile provider, and starting playback can have different causes. Record any accompanying error code or wording before changing settings.
- Only one device fails: prioritize that device, its app, browser, firmware, or local network settings.
- Every device on your home network fails: investigate the router, ISP, VPN, DNS or a service-side incident.
- HBO Max fails on several devices and a second network: a service-side or account problem becomes more likely.
- Your subscription is bundled: distinguish provider activation from signing in to an existing HBO Max account.
HBO Max recommends trying another supported device and saving the exact on-screen message or code when contacting support (general error guidance; app and website troubleshooting).

Check HBO Max and your internet connection
Run two comparison tests
- On the affected device, open another website or streaming app.
- Try HBO Max on another supported device using the same network.
- If possible, test HBO Max on cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network. A temporary cellular test may use mobile data.
If other services also fail, the network is the likely starting point. If everything else works and HBO Max fails only on one device, continue with app and device fixes. Do not assume HBO Max is down without checking multiple devices and networks.
Check speed and stability
HBO Max’s guidance lists at least 5 Mbps download speed for HD and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. These are guidance thresholds, not guarantees: latency, packet loss, congestion, Wi-Fi interference and filtering can still cause connection errors (HBO Max troubleshooting; buffering and network guidance).
| Use case | HBO Max guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| HD streaming | At least 5 Mbps | Minimum guidance; not a smooth-playback guarantee |
| 4K video | 50 Mbps or more | Recommendation; stability and congestion still matter |
- Confirm the device is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Move closer to the router or use Ethernet where practical.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, games, video calls and other streams.
- On cellular, verify HBO Max is allowed to use mobile data and temporarily disable data-saving restrictions.
Disable VPNs, proxies and privacy filters
A VPN warning means HBO Max believes the connection uses a VPN, proxy or anonymization service. Corporate security systems, school or hotel networks, DNS filters, browser extensions and private-relay features can produce similar symptoms even when you are not using a conventional VPN.
- Turn off the VPN, proxy or anonymization service.
- Restart the modem and router using the sequence in the next section.
- Try HBO Max again.
- On a computer, test another supported browser and clear HBO Max cookies.
- Search for “what is my IP address.” If the apparent location is wrong, ask your ISP to investigate.
Do not buy a VPN as a fix; HBO Max identifies VPNs and proxies as possible causes of rejection (VPN and proxy troubleshooting). Re-enable a privacy or work-security tool after testing if your organization requires it.

Restart the network and streaming device
- Turn off or unplug the device running HBO Max.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug in the modem and wait about one minute, or until it reconnects.
- Plug in the router and wait for it to reconnect.
- Turn the streaming device on and test HBO Max.
This interrupts every device on the home network. HBO Max documents the sequence for general errors and VPN-related connection problems (general error recovery; VPN guidance).
Update HBO Max, the device and the browser
Install updates for both the HBO Max app and the operating system or firmware of the phone, tablet, TV, streaming player or console. Labels vary by model and software version; these are common paths:
| Platform | Common app-update path | Common system-update path |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV | App Store → search HBO Max → Update | Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software |
| Samsung TV | Home → Apps → Settings icon → Updates | Settings → Support → Software Updates → Update Now |
| Roku | Highlight HBO Max → Star → Check for updates | Use Roku’s system-update menu |
| Fire TV | Highlight HBO Max → Menu → More Info → Update | Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for System Update |
| Android TV | Highlight HBO Max → hold Select → View Details → Update | Use the device’s system-update menu |
| LG TV | LG Content Store → Apps → My Apps → HBO Max → Update | Use LG’s software-update menu |
| PlayStation | Highlight HBO Max → Options → Check for Update | Use the console’s system-update menu |
For computers, use a current supported version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows or Safari, and update the browser when prompted (current app, browser and device guidance).
Sign out, fully restart and sign back in
- Sign out of HBO Max.
- Turn the device completely off, not merely into sleep mode.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Turn it on, open HBO Max and sign in again.
This refreshes a stuck session without deleting your account, profile or subscription. The exact power-off control differs by device; HBO Max’s general error instructions use this full restart approach (error recovery).

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix HBO Max in a web browser
- Try a current supported browser.
- Open a private or incognito window.
- If that works, disable extensions and ad blockers one at a time, enable required third-party cookies, and clear HBO Max site data.
- Turn off browser VPN or proxy extensions.
- Update the browser and test again.
Private-window success usually points to cookies, extensions or privacy settings rather than your HBO Max account.
Resolve provider-bundled subscription problems
Cable, mobile, internet and TV-provider subscribers may need to activate or connect the provider before first use. If you already created an HBO Max account, sign in with that HBO Max email and password instead of repeatedly selecting the provider-connection flow (provider connection guidance).
“Can’t verify your subscription”
Confirm HBO Max is included in the provider package. Sign in to the provider’s website to verify the entitlement; contact the provider if it is missing.

Availability depends on country, model and operating-system version. HBO Max lists, for example, Fire TV devices on the current OS or two previous versions, select Samsung TVs on the current OS or two previous versions, Apple TV HD and 4K on current tvOS, and select LG devices on the current webOS version or two previous versions. Roku availability can be region-limited (supported devices and territories).
If HBO Max does not appear in the device’s official app store, the device may be unsupported, out of date, unavailable in your country or short on storage. Test a supported phone or computer before buying hardware or changing advanced network settings.
Choose the right support contact when fixes fail
Collect these details before escalating:
- Exact error wording and code.
- Device make, model, operating-system or firmware version.
- HBO Max app version, or browser name and version.
- Internet service provider.
- Whether the problem occurs on another device, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and cellular data.
- Any VPN, proxy, DNS filter, private relay or security tool in use.
- Whether the subscription is direct or provider-bundled.
- Approximate start time and your time zone.
- HBO Max: app, account, sign-in or service behavior after the basic tests.
- Your ISP: whole-home failures, incorrect IP location, packet loss or router problems.
- Your provider: missing entitlement, activation and provider credentials.
- Device manufacturer: a problem limited to one device after HBO Max’s app steps.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose before replacing anything: compare devices and networks, remove VPN or proxy interference, restart the network, update software, refresh the session, then clear data or reinstall. Provider entitlement and unsupported-device problems require the provider or platform—not a faster internet plan—to resolve them.
