If Microsoft Authenticator says “The account you’re trying to add is not valid at this time,” Microsoft’s guidance is to contact Microsoft Support for a personal account or your organization’s IT administrator for a work or school account. Microsoft does not identify a specific cause or promise a self-service fix for this exact error.
First, identify the account type
Microsoft’s Authenticator troubleshooting guidance gives different escalation routes depending on whether the account is personal or managed by an organization.

Microsoft also lists these checks for Authenticator issues generally. They are not confirmed fixes for this particular account-validation error, but can help rule out common app or device problems:

- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Update Authenticator to a supported current version. Microsoft says it does not support app versions more than 12 months old.
- Check that Authenticator notifications are enabled in your device settings.
- Install available device updates, and verify that the device’s date and time are correct.
- If you use a VPN, disconnect it temporarily and see whether the behavior changes.
If the error persists, use the support route for your account type rather than assuming one of these checks will resolve it.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
Microsoft’s entry for this exact message directs users to Support or an IT administrator; it does not diagnose why the account could not be added. The message alone does not establish that the account is inactive, or that the phone, QR code, or app installation is at fault. Microsoft’s listed instruction does not recommend reinstalling Authenticator as a guaranteed fix.

When you ask for help, share the exact error text and explain whether you are adding a personal, work, or school account. For a managed account, your IT administrator is the appropriate route because the account is tied to your organization.
