If Microsoft Store shows error 0x80070422 while downloading or updating an app, turn on the Windows Update service first. Open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it if it is stopped, restart Windows, and try the Store again.

The code in the supplied title, 0X800070422, contains an extra zero. Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070422. Searching for the corrected form—How to fix 0x80070422 Microsoft Store error—will match the relevant Windows guidance. Microsoft defines it as a disabled service condition; in Microsoft Learn’s wording, “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.”

What Microsoft Store error 0x80070422 means

Error 0x80070422 maps to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. The immediate condition is that Windows Update is disabled or not running. Microsoft Store uses Windows Update infrastructure for parts of app installation and updating, so a stopped service can appear as a Store download or update failure even though the Store application itself opens normally.

This is normally a Windows configuration problem, not evidence that an app is malicious. Common accompanying conditions include a damaged Store cache, an incorrectly registered Store package, missing Windows updates, incorrect time or location settings, or firewall and proxy rules that block Microsoft endpoints.

Step 1: Turn on the Windows Update service

This is the primary fix for Microsoft Store error 0x80070422 and should be attempted before changing Store files or network settings.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. In the Services list, locate Windows Update.
  4. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  5. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  6. If Service status shows Stopped, select Start.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Restart the computer.

After Windows starts again, open Settings, go to Windows Update, and select Check for updates. When that check completes, reopen Microsoft Store and retry the download or update.

If Windows Update is already set to Automatic

Use the same Properties window to check whether the service is actually running. A service can have an Automatic startup type but still be stopped after a failed start, a policy change, or a dependency problem. Start it manually, apply the setting, restart, and test the Store again.

If the service will not start

Note the exact message shown by Services. On a work or school computer, a group policy can deliberately disable Windows Update; changing the local setting may be reversed by the organization. Contact the administrator rather than repeatedly forcing the service to start.

Step 2: Reset the Microsoft Store cache

If Windows Update is running but the Store still cannot download, clear the Store cache with Microsoft’s built-in reset command.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK.

A blank Command Prompt window opens. Microsoft says it normally closes after about ten seconds and Microsoft Store then opens automatically. Do not close the window while the reset is running. Try the same app download after the Store reappears.

Step 3: Install pending Windows updates and verify regional settings

Install updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install all available updates. Restart whenever Windows requests it, then check once more until no further updates are offered. A Store client or Windows Update component that is behind can prevent app installation even after the service is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check time and location

In Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and confirm the time zone. In Settings > Time & language > Language & region, verify that the country or region is correct for your location. Incorrect system time can invalidate secure connections, while a mismatched region can make Store catalog and licensing requests fail.

Step 4: Verify Microsoft Store registration

A Store package that exists but is not correctly registered can fail to launch or install apps. Microsoft Learn provides these PowerShell checks.

  1. Open PowerShell from the Start menu. Use a normal, non-elevated window if you want to repair the Store for your own account.
  2. Run:
    Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore* -AllUsers
  3. Check whether the Microsoft Store package is returned.
  4. If the package exists, register it for the current user with:
    Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe
  5. Close PowerShell, restart Windows, and test Microsoft Store.

Do not open an elevated PowerShell prompt casually. Microsoft’s guidance warns that registration from an elevated prompt can register the package for the administrator account instead of the account that is experiencing the problem. If the command reports an access or deployment error, record the message rather than repeatedly rerunning it.

Step 5: Check firewall and proxy access

Microsoft Store installation and update requests need access to Microsoft service endpoints, including Windows Update endpoints. A firewall, proxy, VPN, DNS filter, or corporate network policy can block those connections and leave the Store unable to download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and confirm that any configured proxy is intentional and working. If your organization requires a proxy, do not remove it without administrator approval.
  2. Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection and check that the active network profile is not blocking required Windows services.
  3. If third-party security software or a network filter is installed, review its application and web-access logs for blocked Microsoft Store or Windows Update traffic.
  4. Test on a different trusted network, such as a phone hotspot, only if your security policy allows it. A difference between networks points to a firewall, proxy, DNS, or gateway rule rather than the Store package.

On a managed PC, ask the network administrator to allow the Microsoft endpoints required for Store installation and updates. Do not disable firewall protection permanently as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Step 6: Reset Windows Update components if the service keeps failing

If the Windows Update service starts but immediately stops, or Windows Update repeatedly fails after the basic repair, Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance calls for resetting Windows Update components. This is an advanced administrator procedure because it stops services and renames local update stores.

  1. Open Command Prompt by searching for it, right-clicking it, and choosing Run as administrator.
  2. Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and allow Windows to rebuild the update stores.
  3. Retry the Microsoft Store installation.

A “service was not started” message for a stop command can simply mean that service was already stopped. If a rename command says the folder is in use or access is denied, stop and investigate rather than deleting folders manually.

Step 7: Install the app with winget when Store download remains blocked

Windows Package Manager can provide an alternative route for many Store-distributed applications. It does not repair the Store service, but it can install an app while you continue diagnosing the Store connection.

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. Search for the application:
    winget search <App name>
  3. Review the returned names and identifiers carefully.
  4. Install the intended result:
    winget install <App name>

Use the exact app name or identifier shown by the search result. If winget cannot find the app, or the package requires Store licensing, continue with the service, registration, and network repairs instead.

Diagnose the result by symptom

The Store opens, but downloads fail immediately

Confirm that Windows Update is running, install pending Windows updates, and check firewall or proxy access. These symptoms point most directly to the service or endpoint path.

The Store does not open or closes instantly

Run wsreset.exe, then verify the Store package with PowerShell and register it for the affected user if necessary.

The error returns after every restart

Check whether a policy, security product, or management tool is resetting the Windows Update startup type. If the service stops by itself, use the component-reset procedure and review the exact Services error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one app cannot install

Search for that app with winget search <App name>. If other Store apps download normally, the problem may be app-specific availability, licensing, or region rather than error 0x80070422 itself.

Windows version and support considerations

The Store launch guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, and the troubleshooting procedures are intended for supported Windows client versions. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The Store may still open on an existing Windows 10 installation, but the operating system’s unsupported status can limit updates and troubleshooting options. Windows 11 users should keep the system on a supported release and install offered updates before retrying Store downloads.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The computer is managed by an employer or school and Windows Update is controlled by policy.
  • PowerShell reports package-deployment errors that persist after a restart.
  • The service cannot start because of permissions, dependency, or system-file errors.
  • The Store works on another network but not on the managed network.
  • Windows Update fails repeatedly even after its components are reset.

At that point, preserve the exact error text, service status, PowerShell output, and whether another network changed the result. Those details let a system or network administrator identify the blocked layer without repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
