Treat it as a printer connection, driver, Print Spooler, or installation problem. Check the connection first, restart the spooler, install a matching driver through Windows Update, and then remove and add the printer again. The exact printer model, Windows build, processor architecture, and USB or Wi‑Fi connection determine which branch will work.
The procedure below starts with low-risk checks and progresses to a spooler reset. It also covers ARM-based PCs, where a manufacturer installer may not work.

What 0x8007007e means in a printer download
Windows can display this code while downloading a driver, adding a printer, or trying to connect to a printer that was previously installed. Current Microsoft printer articles do not assign a single modern meaning to 0x8007007e, so the number alone cannot identify a failed component. A bad cable, a printer on a different network, a stuck Print Spooler queue, an incompatible driver package, or a damaged previous installation can all produce similar symptoms.
Do not confuse it with the older 0x0000007e Point-and-Print error documented by Microsoft as ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND (“the specified module could not be found”). That historical scenario does not prove that a current 0x8007007e incident has the same cause.

Collect these details before changing anything
- Printer make and exact model, including a suffix such as “e,” “dn,” or “series.”
- Windows edition and build: press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and press Enter. - Whether the printer is connected by USB, Wi‑Fi, or Ethernet.
- Whether the PC uses x64, x86, or ARM64 Windows. In Settings > System > About, check System type.
- Whether the error appears during driver download, printer discovery, or printing a document.
These details determine which driver package and installation path are appropriate. A driver for a similar-looking model or a different architecture can fail even when the printer itself is working.
Safety and preparation
Use Windows Update or the printer maker’s official Support or Drivers page. Avoid download sites that bundle “driver installers,” browser extensions, or unrelated utilities. Confirm that the model name and Windows architecture match before running a package.
Save or note any custom settings you will need later, such as paper size, duplex mode, tray selection, or a manually assigned network address. Removing a printer from Windows does not erase documents stored on the printer, but it can remove that printer’s Windows preferences and queued jobs.

If a print job is urgent, pause the queue or save your document before restarting services. The first four steps below do not delete files. The spool-folder reset later does delete pending spool files, so use it only after ordinary restart and reinstall attempts fail.

Fix 0x8007007e step by step
1. Confirm power, cable, and network
- Turn the printer on and wait until its display shows a ready or idle state. Clear any paper, toner, cover, or hardware warning shown on the printer itself.
- For USB, unplug the cable from both the printer and PC, reconnect it firmly, and try a different USB port. Connect directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub while testing. If another known-good cable is available, test it; a cable is relevant only to a USB connection, not to a driver-only failure.
- For Wi‑Fi, print the printer’s network-status page or open its network menu and note the connected network. Make sure the PC is on that same Wi‑Fi network. A guest network, VPN, or client-isolation setting can prevent discovery even when both devices have internet access.
- For Ethernet, check both ends of the network cable and the link indicator on the printer or switch. Confirm that the printer has an address on the same local network as the PC.
- From the printer’s control panel, print a built-in configuration or test page if available. If the printer cannot produce its own page, solve that hardware or consumables problem before troubleshooting Windows.
After correcting a connection issue, try the download or print operation again. If the code returns, continue without assuming the printer hardware is defective.
2. Restart Print Spooler
Print Spooler is the Windows service that receives print jobs, maintains the queue, and communicates with printer drivers. Restarting it can clear a temporary recognition or installation failure.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start.
- Double-click Print Spooler and confirm Startup type is Automatic, then select Apply and OK.
- Retry adding the printer or downloading its driver.
If the service stops again immediately, a queued job, damaged driver, or dependent service may be involved. Do not repeatedly restart it; move to the driver and remove-and-add steps.

Microsoft recommends downloading and installing the latest printer driver for a printer. Windows Update is the preferred first source because it can select a package appropriate for the Windows build and architecture.

- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow available updates to install. Restart if Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device. Keep the printer powered on and connected while Windows searches.
- If an optional driver update is offered in Windows Update, review it and install the one that identifies your printer model.
Do not install a package for a neighboring model merely because its name is similar. A model-specific package may include a different print language, scanner component, or connection module.
4. Use the manufacturer’s official driver page when Windows Update is not enough
If Windows Update cannot find the printer or supplies only a basic driver that lacks required features, open the manufacturer’s official Support or Drivers page manually. Search by the exact model, select your Windows edition and architecture, and download the current package offered for that combination.
- Check the downloaded file name and its digital-signature or publisher information before running it.
- Read the installer’s connection choice. Some packages expect the printer to be connected by USB during setup; others discover a network printer or ask for its address.
- Close other printer installers and temporarily disconnect duplicate USB printer cables so the package cannot bind to the wrong device.
- Run the installer with the printer powered on. If it offers to remove an older package first, allow that only if you have recorded settings you need.
- Restart Windows when the installer completes, even if it does not require a restart, then print a test page.
If the manufacturer provides separate x64, x86, and ARM64 downloads, choose the architecture shown in Settings > System > About. An architecture mismatch can leave the printer listed but unusable.

On Windows 11, the automated Printer troubleshooter runs through the Get Help app. Open Get Help from the Start menu, search for printer troubleshooter, and follow the prompts. Allow it to inspect the selected printer, spooler state, and common connection settings.

On some Windows builds, the troubleshooter may direct you to Settings or offer a repair action rather than displaying a separate wizard. Read each proposed change before accepting it, and record the printer name if several devices are installed.
6. Remove the printer and add it again
A stale printer object can keep pointing to an obsolete driver or an old network address. Removing and re-adding it creates a fresh Windows connection.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer and choose Remove or Remove device. Confirm the action.
- Restart the PC. This lets Windows release handles held by the old queue and driver.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and choose Add device.
- Wait for discovery. Select the correct model, then complete setup.
- If automatic discovery fails, choose the option to add the printer manually and follow the prompts for its USB connection, network address, or shared-printer path.
When several entries have similar names, select the one whose connection matches the cable or network you are actually using. A duplicate entry can appear after an interrupted installation.
7. Reset the spooler queue and files only when necessary
Use this reset for stuck jobs or repeated installation failures that survive a normal Print Spooler restart. It removes pending spool files; those jobs will not print afterward.

- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows asks. - Delete the files inside the PRINTERS folder. Do not delete the folder itself or files elsewhere in
%WINDIR%System32. - Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- Open the service’s Properties and set Startup type to Automatic if it is not already selected.
- Restart Windows, then reinstall or add the printer using Windows Update or the exact manufacturer package.
If a file cannot be deleted, confirm that Print Spooler is stopped and close print-monitor software or a printer installer. Do not force-delete unrelated files or change permissions on the spool directory.
8. Follow the ARM-specific installation path
Some ARM PCs, including certain Copilot+ PCs, cannot use a manufacturer’s traditional installer. On those systems, use Windows’ built-in path: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. Let Windows obtain the compatible driver through its normal setup process unless the manufacturer publishes different ARM guidance for that exact model.
If an installer reports that it is unsupported on ARM, do not repeatedly run it in compatibility mode. Remove any partially created printer entry, restart the PC, and retry Add device. If the manufacturer lists a dedicated ARM package, use that package instead.
9. Print a Windows test page
A test page separates a Windows-wide printer problem from an application-specific problem.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer, open Printer properties, and choose Print Test Page. The exact button may appear on the General tab depending on the Windows build.
- Wait for the page to print before opening Word, a browser, or another application.
If the test page prints, the driver and basic connection are functioning; investigate the individual application, document, or selected printer. If it fails, continue with connection, driver, and spooler diagnosis rather than blaming the application.

Common mistakes that keep the error coming back
- Using a package for the wrong model: “Series” names can contain several incompatible devices. Read the complete model identifier on the printer label or configuration page.
- Mixing connection types: A USB entry and a network entry for the same printer are separate Windows devices. Test one connection at a time.
- Installing before Windows finishes updating: Complete pending Windows updates and restart before running a manufacturer package.
- Ignoring architecture: x64, x86, and ARM64 packages are not interchangeable. Verify System type first.
- Resetting the spool folder too early: The reset deletes pending jobs. Try an ordinary service restart first.
- Testing only from an application: Always print a Windows test page so an application setting is not mistaken for a driver failure.
- Running several installers at once: Concurrent packages can create duplicate queues or leave a partially installed driver. Finish or cancel one setup before starting another.
When the code still appears
Record the exact point of failure: driver download, device discovery, installation, or test printing. Note the printer model, Windows build from winver, architecture, connection type, and any text shown beside the code. That information lets the printer manufacturer or Microsoft support distinguish a model-specific package problem from a Windows spooler or network issue.
If the printer fails its own built-in test page, shows a hardware warning, or cannot join the intended network, Windows driver changes will not correct that underlying condition. Resolve the printer’s local error or network configuration first. If the printer’s own page works but Windows cannot add it after the sequence above, preserve the error text and the attempted driver version for support.
