The string 08007007e is usually a mistyped or truncated form of 0x8007007E. Microsoft does not document the unprefixed spelling as a standard Edge error code, and 0x8007007E can have different causes depending on when it appears. In Edge, the most useful clue is the action that triggers it: startup, an update or installation, or printing a PDF.
Use the matching section below rather than applying every fix at random. Record the complete message, your Windows edition and version, Edge’s version from edge://version, and whether the same operation works in another application. That information distinguishes an Edge profile problem from a Windows component, update service, printer, or driver problem.

What 0x8007007E means in Edge
Microsoft documentation for another product uses 0x8007007E for an automation error in which “The specified module could not be found.” That wording supports a missing, damaged, or unregistered DLL interpretation, but it does not prove that every Edge occurrence has the same cause. A Microsoft Q&A report records the exact message “Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem 0x8007007e” when printing a PDF from Edge, while printing from other applications worked. In that situation, the Windows print subsystem or printer driver is a more likely starting point than the browser profile.
There is no single, universal repair for this code. First identify the symptom:
#1 Best Overall
| When the message appears | Most likely area to investigate | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Edge will not open, shows a blank window, or crashes | Edge profile, installation, or a missing module | Temporary-profile test, then profile reset or Edge Repair |
| Edge installation or update fails | Update cache, Windows Update, network filtering, or permissions | Compatibility troubleshooter and update-cache cleanup |
| Only printing a PDF produces the code | Print Spooler, printer configuration, or printer driver | Spooler check, driver reinstall, and Windows printer troubleshooting |
| The code also appears in other programs | Windows components or a shared/missing module | Repair the affected component and check system health |
The hexadecimal prefix matters. When you search or report the issue, use 0x8007007E and include the full text of the message. The lower-case, unprefixed form “08007007e” is useful as a search term but is not an established Microsoft label.
Before changing anything
Capture the details
- Write down the complete error text, including whether it mentions a printer, update, installation, or a missing file.
- Check your Windows version in Settings > System > About.
- If Edge opens, enter
edge://versionin the address bar and note the version, executable path, and profile path. - Test the same action in another browser or Windows application. For printing, try a simple document from a different application. If another application also fails, treat the problem as a Windows or printer issue rather than an Edge-only fault.
- If the problem started immediately after an update, driver change, or software installation, record that timing. Do not delete profile or driver files before backing up data you may need.
Use an administrator account when required
Profile testing normally works with a standard account, but repairing Edge, restarting services, changing driver files, or clearing protected folders can require administrator approval. If Windows asks for credentials, use an account authorized to make those changes. Avoid downloading replacement DLLs from unofficial websites; a mismatched DLL can create a larger security and compatibility problem.
Fix Edge startup, blank-window, and crash symptoms
1. Test Edge with a temporary profile
This test separates a damaged profile from the Edge program itself. It does not erase your normal bookmarks, extensions, passwords, or history.

cmd, and press Enter. Use Command Prompt rather than PowerShell for the command’s quoting. - Run this command exactly:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --user-data-dir="%TEMP%edge-test-profile"
The command points Edge at a disposable profile under your temporary folder. The normal profile is not modified. If Edge opens cleanly, browse briefly and close it. Microsoft describes this result directly: “If Edge starts cleanly by using the test profile, the original profile is the cause of the problem.”
2. Recreate the default profile
Only use this step when the temporary-profile test succeeds. Renaming preserves the old data as a fallback, but Edge will not automatically merge everything into the new profile.
- Close Edge completely.
- Open File Explorer and paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftEdgeUser Datainto the address bar. - Find the folder named
Default. Rename it toDefault.old. If Windows says the folder is in use, end remaining Edge processes in Task Manager and try again. - Start Edge normally. It creates a new
Defaultfolder. - Sign in to the same Edge profile if you previously used synchronization, then allow synchronized data to return before enabling extensions.
Copy data from Default.old cautiously. Do not overwrite the new folder wholesale: that can bring the damaged setting back. Export bookmarks from the old profile when possible and import them through Settings and more > Favorites > More options > Import favorites. Passwords and other protected data may not be recoverable by simply copying files.

3. Repair the Edge installation
If Edge still fails with the temporary profile, repair the program installation.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, select the three-dot menu, and choose Modify.
- Choose Repair and follow the prompts. Keep the device connected to the internet if the repair wizard needs installation files.
- Restart Windows and test Edge again.
A repair targets the installed program and normally leaves browser data intact, but you should still keep the profile backup created above. If the Modify or Repair option is unavailable, use the installation/update path in the next section.
Fix installation and update failures
1. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if it is listed, select Microsoft Edge when prompted, and apply its recommended settings.
- Restart Windows and retry the Edge update or installation.
The exact troubleshooter names can vary by Windows release. If the troubleshooter is not present, continue with the cache, update, and network checks below.
2. Clear the Edge update cache
- Close Edge and any installer window.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftEdgeUpdate, and press Enter. - Delete the contents of that
Updatefolder, or rename the folder toUpdate.oldif Windows will not allow deletion. Do not remove unrelated folders elsewhere under%LOCALAPPDATA%. - Restart Windows, open Edge, and check for the update again.
If a file is locked, reboot before trying again. A locked file can indicate that an update process is still running; deleting files while processes are active can leave the installation incomplete.
3. Check Windows Update and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install applicable updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it, then retry Edge.
Microsoft lists several update-related codes with distinct meanings, including 0x80070005 (access denied), 0x80070057 (invalid parameters), 0x8024001E (connection to the update server), 0x80240016 (another update in progress), 0x80072EE7 (DNS resolution), and 0x80040154 (missing update service). 0x8007007E is not included in that Edge-specific table, so do not assume one of those explanations applies unless the accompanying message supports it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Check network and security filtering
- Confirm that ordinary websites load and that the device has the correct date, time, and time zone.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or restrictive proxy, following your organization’s policy.
- On a managed computer, ask the administrator whether a firewall, web filter, or endpoint security rule blocks Microsoft’s Edge download or update endpoints. Allow the required Microsoft endpoints rather than disabling protection broadly.
- If the download fails only on one network, try an approved alternate connection to distinguish a network restriction from a damaged installation.
5. Reinstall Edge from Microsoft
When repair and cache cleanup do not work, reinstall Edge using the official Microsoft Edge download page. Close other applications, keep the network connection stable, and restart after installation. If a work or school device is managed, use the deployment method supplied by the administrator instead of replacing a managed installation manually.

Fix 0x8007007E when printing a PDF from Edge
If the exact message says that the printer experienced an unexpected configuration problem and printing works from other applications, focus on Windows printing and the printer driver.
1. Confirm the scope
- In Edge, open the PDF and choose Print. Record whether the error appears when opening print preview, selecting a printer, or sending the job.
- Print a test page or a document from another application. Try a second printer if one is available.
- If every application fails, skip browser-specific profile resets and continue with the spooler and driver steps.
2. Verify and restart Print Spooler
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler. Its status should be Running and its startup type normally Automatic.
- If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start. If it is running, choose Restart.
- Retry the PDF. If queued jobs remain stuck, open the printer queue and cancel them before testing again.
3. Remove and reinstall the printer with its current driver
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer, choose Remove, and confirm. Record any custom paper, tray, or network settings first.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver supplied by the printer manufacturer for your exact printer model and Windows edition. Prefer the manufacturer’s supported package over a random driver-download site.
- Add the printer again in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device, then print a test page.
Driver packages can contain printer-specific configuration modules. A driver that is present but damaged, mismatched, or left over from an older model can produce a missing-module style error even though Edge itself is functioning.
4. Run Windows printer troubleshooting
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Printer if it is available. Apply the recommended repair, restart the Print Spooler if requested, and test a PDF again.

5. Treat manual DLL copying as a last-resort investigation
The Microsoft Q&A discussion mentions locating printconfig.dll in the driver store and restoring it to the active driver folder. That is not a universal Microsoft-supported fix. Driver-store paths differ by device and Windows build, and copying the wrong file can break printing or introduce an untrusted binary. Back up the relevant files, use only a matching file from the same signed driver package, and prefer removing and reinstalling the driver first. If the manufacturer provides a repair utility or replacement package, use that documented method instead.
When the code appears outside Edge
If 0x8007007E appears in several programs, Edge may only be the first application to expose a damaged or missing Windows component. Note the module name, if the dialog gives one, and the exact application that fails. Reinstall or repair that application through its supported installer, then install pending Windows updates. For a system-wide problem, use Windows’ built-in component-repair procedures from an administrator Command Prompt and follow Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows version; do not download individual system DLLs from third-party repositories.
Security software can also block an update or module, but disabling protection indiscriminately is unsafe. Check its event log for a blocked Edge or printer component and create a narrowly scoped, temporary exception only under the product’s documented guidance. Restore normal protection immediately after testing.
Quick Recap
A practical order of operations
- Identify the trigger and capture the full message.
- Test whether another application reproduces the failure.
- For startup crashes, run the temporary-profile command.
- If the test profile works, rename
DefaulttoDefault.oldand rebuild the profile. - If it does not, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair.
- For update or installation failures, clear
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftEdgeUpdate, check Windows Update, review network filtering, and reinstall from Microsoft if necessary. - For PDF-printing failures, restart Print Spooler, reinstall the manufacturer’s driver, and run Windows printer troubleshooting.
- If several applications fail, investigate Windows components or the shared module named in the error instead of repeatedly resetting Edge.
What not to do
- Do not treat “08007007e” as proof of one specific cause.
- Do not delete the normal Edge profile before testing a temporary profile and preserving a backup.
- Do not copy a DLL from an unrelated computer or an unverified download site.
- Do not disable antivirus, firewall, or organizational controls permanently to complete an update.
- Do not keep retrying an Edge repair when every application has the same printer or Windows-component failure.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check for and fix more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and can review settings associated with this type of error. It also offers cleanup, vulnerability checks, and other maintenance features, but it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no utility repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
