If Windows shows 0x80070422, Microsoft identifies it as a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. The code 0x800700422 contains an extra digit and has no matching Microsoft definition in the current documentation, so verify the original message before changing anything. Once the exact code is confirmed as 0x80070422, enable the Windows Update service, run the built-in troubleshooter, and reset the update cache only if necessary.

The fastest safe approach is to treat 0x800700422 as an unverified transcription until you copy the code directly from the original dialog or log. Microsoft documents 0x80070422, classified as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, for a Windows Update service that is stopped or not running. That distinction matters: a Store, Xbox, .NET feature, MSI, or EXE failure may display a similar-looking number but needs a different repair path.

Check the code before attempting a repair

Do not silently remove or add a digit because a search result uses a familiar Windows Update code. Read the value from the source that reported it and record the surrounding details.

What you find What it establishes Next action
0x80070422 from Windows Update Matches Microsoft’s documented service-disabled condition Follow the Windows Update service and cache steps below
0x800700422 exactly as displayed No Microsoft definition is established for this extra-digit string Recapture the complete message and identify the originating component before applying a fix
Either code from Microsoft Store, Xbox, .NET feature installation, or an MSI/EXE The failing component may not be Windows Update Use the component named in the message or log; do not assume the Windows Update service is the cause
The number appears only in a web page title or copied text The original error has not been verified Find the dialog, event, or log that produced it and copy the code again

Capture the original message

  1. Copy the error directly from the Windows dialog, Settings page, or application log. If the interface allows only a screenshot, zoom in and transcribe every character, including the leading 0x.
  2. Write down whether the failure occurred during Windows Update, a Microsoft Store download, an Xbox installation, a .NET feature installation, or a standalone MSI/EXE setup.
  3. Record the Windows edition and build. This helps distinguish a current Windows 11 path from a Windows 10 system with a different support status.
  4. Keep the exact wording available while troubleshooting. If the code remains 0x800700422, that wording is more useful to support staff than a guessed correction to 0x80070422.

What confirmed 0x80070422 means

Microsoft Support describes 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn classifies the underlying condition as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and explains that the Windows Update service has stopped working or is not running. In practical terms, Windows cannot perform the update transaction while the service is unavailable.

The code does not, by itself, identify a damaged update package, a malware infection, or a defective device. It points first to service availability. That is why checking the service state is the first manual repair rather than immediately deleting files or reinstalling Windows.

Prepare before changing Windows Update

  • Save open documents and close programs that may be installing software.
  • Make sure the computer is connected to power if it is a laptop.
  • Do not begin a cache reset while Windows is actively installing an update or displaying a restart operation.
  • Use an account permitted to change Windows services. If the Services console requests elevation, approve it only if you initiated the action.
  • Keep the original error text, edition, build, and source component noted so you can tell whether a later message is the same failure or a new one.

Manual fix sequence for a confirmed Windows Update 0x80070422 error

1. Enable and start the Windows Update service

This is the primary repair for the documented condition. The service must not be configured as disabled, and it must be running when Windows checks for updates.

  1. Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. In the Services window, locate Windows Update. Selecting the service displays its current status and startup type.
  4. Open the service properties. If the startup type is Disabled, change it to a non-disabled option. Microsoft uses Automatic in its example.
  5. If the service status is Stopped, select Start.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Restart Windows. After signing back in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the service was already running and its startup type was not disabled, this step has not identified the cause. Leave the service settings as they were and continue with the troubleshooter instead of repeatedly stopping and starting it.

2. Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft’s troubleshooter runs diagnostics and attempts fixes automatically. Run it after the service is available so its checks are not blocked by the original condition.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Review the findings and apply the changes it reports. Allow the diagnostic process to finish before closing Settings.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it, then select Check for updates again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and let the diagnostic complete.
  4. Apply only the changes it reports, restart when requested, and retry Windows Update.

A troubleshooter result is a diagnostic clue, not proof that every update problem has been repaired. If it reports that no change was needed and the same code returns, proceed to the cache-reset step.

3. Reset the Windows Update cache

Windows stores update-download data in the SoftwareDistribution folder. Microsoft documents clearing the folder’s contents as a cache-reset step. The folder itself should remain in place.

  1. Open services.msc again with Win+R.
  2. Locate Windows Update and select Stop. Wait for the service status to show that it has stopped.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the contents inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  5. Return to Services, select Windows Update, and choose Start.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If Windows says a file is in use, stop and verify that the Windows Update service is actually stopped rather than repeatedly forcing deletion. Do not interrupt an active installation or a restart operation. A cache reset is intended for stale or unusable update data; it is not a reason to remove unrelated folders elsewhere in C:Windows.

What to do if 0x80070422 returns

Repeat the exact-code check before repeating repairs. A recurring 0x80070422 from Windows Update means the service state or update data still needs attention, but the next useful evidence is the state of the service and the text around the failure.

  • Reopen services.msc and note whether Windows Update is running and whether its startup type has reverted to Disabled.
  • Record whether the error appears immediately when selecting Check for updates or only after a download or installation begins.
  • Preserve relevant entries from CBS.log and WindowsUpdate.log. Keep the entries associated with the failure time rather than deleting the logs before they can be reviewed.
  • Capture the complete dialog text again if the displayed value is still 0x800700422. The extra digit remains unverified, so do not describe it as Microsoft’s documented service error.

When the source is not Windows Update

A code shown by another installer should be handled according to that installer. For example, a Microsoft Store or Xbox failure can involve the Store or Xbox component, a .NET feature installation can involve optional Windows features, and an MSI/EXE setup can have its own installer requirements. The presence of a similar-looking hexadecimal number does not prove that the Windows Update service caused those failures.

Microsoft Store The Store transaction may be failing even if Windows Update is healthy Store page, app name, and the complete Store error text

Windows version and support status

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. On a Windows 10 computer, a successful repair of the Windows Update service does not change that lifecycle status. The machine may need an upgrade or a separately supported servicing path instead of being expected to receive ongoing free Windows Update security fixes.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 also use different Settings locations for the troubleshooter, so confirm the edition before following an on-screen path. Record the build when requesting help; a service error on an actively supported release and the same text on an out-of-support installation can lead to different next decisions.

Common mistakes to avoid

Correcting the number by guesswork

Changing 0x800700422 to 0x80070422 may make a search easier, but it can also hide the actual component and message. Treat the extra-digit form as unverified until the original source is checked.

Deleting the entire SoftwareDistribution folder

The documented cache step is to stop Windows Update and delete the folder’s contents while leaving the folder itself. Deleting unrelated system folders is outside this procedure and can create a separate problem.

Resetting the cache during an installation

Stopping services or deleting files while Windows is installing an update or preparing a restart can interrupt that operation. Wait until the installation and restart sequence has finished.

Applying Windows Update instructions to another product

A Store, Xbox, .NET, MSI, or EXE error needs to be identified by its source. Do not use the page title alone as evidence that Windows Update is involved.

Ignoring the Windows 10 lifecycle

Service repair can restore the ability to check for updates, but it cannot extend Microsoft’s Windows 10 support period beyond October 14, 2025.

A compact decision path

  1. Copy the code. If it is exactly 0x80070422 and came from Windows Update, continue. If it is 0x800700422, recapture the original message and source.
  2. Check the service. In services.msc, set Windows Update to a non-disabled startup type, start it if stopped, apply the change, restart Windows, and retry.
  3. Run the correct troubleshooter. Use the Windows 11 or Windows 10 Settings path for the installed edition and apply only reported changes.
  4. Reset the cache if necessary. Stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry.
  5. Escalate with evidence. Preserve the exact dialog and relevant CBS.log/WindowsUpdate.log entries, especially if the source was not Windows Update or the extra-digit code persists.
