The text 0x800700422 appears to contain nine hexadecimal digits, while the usual HRESULT form has eight. Do not apply a code-specific repair until you copy the exact value from the Windows dialog, Windows Update history, or the application log. A common intended code is 0x80070422, which Microsoft associates with a disabled Windows Update service. Another look-alike, 0x80070042, means “The network resource type is not correct” and points to a network or mapped-device operation instead.

Once the code and context are confirmed, follow the matching section below. The Windows Update procedure starts with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter and then moves through service, cache, connectivity, storage, and driver checks.

Verify the exact error before changing anything

A single extra digit changes the diagnosis. Check the original Windows error dialog rather than relying on a typed title or a screenshot crop. If the failure occurred during an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and record the complete code and the update that failed. If an application produced the message, copy the value from that application’s log as well.

  1. Copy the code exactly, including every character after 0x.
  2. Record what was happening: downloading an update, installing an upgrade, opening a program, connecting to a mapped drive, or using another device.
  3. Write down the full message shown beside the code. The wording often identifies whether the problem is a service or a network resource.
  4. Only then choose a repair path.

0x80070042 “The network resource type is not correct.” Network resource, mapped drive, or another device-type operation Investigate the resource involved instead of assuming an update failure

Understand the two codes most often confused with 0x800700422

0x80070422: a disabled update service

Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation table defines 0x80070422 with the message “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” In an update scenario, Windows cannot begin or complete the operation while the required update service is disabled. The practical remedy is to enable and start Windows Update, then retry after the surrounding conditions have been checked.

0x80070042: an incorrect network-resource type

Microsoft’s system-error reference identifies error 66, hexadecimal 0x42, as ERROR_BAD_DEV_TYPE and gives the message “The network resource type is not correct.” This is not automatically a Windows Update error. It usually requires looking at the mapped drive, network path, or device type used by the operation that failed.

The nine-digit string

No code-specific interpretation should be assigned to 0x800700422 until its spelling is confirmed. It may be a transcription error for either of the eight-digit values above, or it may have been copied from a different log field. Applying a Windows Update repair to a network-resource error can waste time, while changing network mappings will not enable a disabled update service.

Manual Windows Update repair sequence

Use this sequence when the confirmed code is 0x80070422, the failure occurs in Windows Update or setup, or the message indicates that an update service cannot start. The steps are ordered from the least invasive check to the manual cache repair.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the troubleshooter to apply any changes it reports.

Restart if Windows requests it, then try the update once. Starting with the built-in diagnostic can correct a service or configuration condition without manually deleting update files.

2. Stabilize the internet connection and power

Windows needs a reliable connection to download and install update packages. Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet if the connection dropped, and avoid beginning the installation while the computer is repeatedly switching networks. Keep a laptop connected to AC power during the download and installation so a battery shutdown does not interrupt the process.

3. Confirm administrator access

Some updates and service changes require an administrator account. Sign in with an account that can approve administrative prompts. If the device is managed by an organization, a policy may prevent you from changing the service; in that case, the administrator responsible for the computer must perform the change.

4. Disconnect unnecessary external hardware

Shut down or unplug external storage, docks, and other devices that are not required for the update. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware needed to start the computer. Retry after removing the extras. Reconnect them after Windows Update completes so that a device or dock driver is not involved in the initial installation attempt.

5. Check that the Windows Update service is enabled and running

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services console, locate Windows Update.
  3. Open its properties and check the startup setting. If it is set to Disabled, change it to an enabled startup setting permitted on the computer.
  4. Select Start if the service is stopped, then choose Apply and OK.
  5. Close the console and run Windows Update again.

If the service stops immediately or Windows refuses the change, note the exact message. Do not repeatedly force-start it; continue with the remaining checks and, if necessary, use the Windows Update component-reset guidance or obtain administrator help.

6. Clear the Windows Update download cache

A damaged or incomplete download can make a service that is otherwise running fail during the next attempt. Clearing the cache removes downloaded update contents so Windows can obtain them again.

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update, open its context menu, and select Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the contents of that folder, not the folder itself. Administrative approval may be required.
  5. Return to the Services console, select Windows Update, and choose Start.
  6. Restart the computer before checking for updates again.

Only clear this folder after the service has stopped. If files cannot be removed, another update-related process may still be using them; restart Windows and repeat the stop-and-delete sequence rather than deleting files while the service is active.

7. Correct the date, time, and time zone

Open Windows date and time settings and enable automatic date, automatic time, and automatic time-zone options. Use the synchronization control if one is available, then retry the update. A clock that is substantially wrong can interfere with secure connections and update validation.

8. Update third-party device drivers

After adding hardware or changing a device, check the hardware manufacturer’s website for current drivers. Pay particular attention to network, storage, and other devices involved in the update. Install the driver intended for your exact Windows edition and hardware model, then restart before retrying Windows Update.

9. Back up files and make enough storage available

Back up personal files before performing further troubleshooting or an upgrade. Microsoft’s current 2026 update guidance says an upgrade may require at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB free for a 64-bit operating system. These are operational minimums for the upgrade guidance, not a guarantee that every update will use exactly that amount.

If the computer has limited internal storage, Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed as supporting storage. A USB drive does not repair the error by itself; it only supplies space when Windows setup asks for it. Do not remove the drive during an installation that is using it.

10. Check for updates again and restart

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install the available updates and follow any restart prompt.
  4. After Windows restarts, return to Update history to confirm whether the previously failing update succeeded.

If the same service error remains after these checks, Microsoft’s guidance allows for resetting Windows Update components. Component reset is more disruptive than the troubleshooter or cache cleanup, so record the exact code, message, and update name first and follow Microsoft’s current reset procedure for your Windows version rather than using an unverified command list.

If the confirmed code is 0x80070042

Use this branch only when the complete value is 0x80070042 and the message says “The network resource type is not correct.” The code identifies an incorrect resource type, but the value alone does not identify which share, mapped drive, or device caused it.

  1. Reproduce the operation. Note whether the message appears while opening a mapped drive, connecting to a network share, selecting a device, or running a particular application.
  2. Identify the exact resource. Record the drive letter, network path, or device name shown immediately before the error. If more than one resource is involved, test them one at a time.
  3. Check the resource type. Confirm that the operation is being directed to the kind of network resource it expects, rather than to a local or removable device presented under the wrong path.
  4. Reconnect and retry. Re-establish the network connection or mapped resource using the same context in which the error appeared, then repeat the operation.
  5. Keep Windows Update separate. Do not disable or reset Windows Update solely because this code appears. Return to the update procedure only if a separate update error is recorded.

If the message changes after reconnecting the resource, preserve the new wording and the path involved. Those details are more useful for the administrator or application vendor than the malformed title string.

Choose the remedy from the failure context

What you observe Code or message to verify Recommended manual path
Windows Update will not download or install 0x80070422 or a message that a service is disabled Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, verify connectivity and administrator access, check the Windows Update service, clear SoftwareDistribution, then retry
Setup reports insufficient space Storage warning during an upgrade Back up files, free space, and meet Microsoft’s 16 GB 32-bit or 20 GB 64-bit guidance; use a USB drive only as supporting storage when setup requests it
The failure follows newly added hardware Update failure with a related device or driver symptom Disconnect unnecessary hardware and obtain the current driver from the hardware manufacturer
A mapped drive or network operation fails 0x80070042 and “The network resource type is not correct” Identify the resource and device type, reconnect it, and troubleshoot that network operation
The displayed value has nine hexadecimal digits 0x800700422 as typed Stop and verify the original dialog, Update history, or log before making code-specific changes

Common mistakes that prolong the problem

  • Assuming the title is accurate: one extra digit can send you to the wrong repair branch.
  • Deleting the cache while Windows Update is running: stop the service first, then remove only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  • Treating a USB drive as a fix: removable storage can provide capacity for setup, but it does not correct a disabled service or an incorrect network-resource type.
  • Ignoring account permissions: service changes and some updates cannot complete without administrator access.
  • Leaving optional hardware connected: docks, external storage, and newly added devices can introduce driver variables during setup.
  • Resetting update components for a network error: 0x80070042 requires investigation of the resource involved, not an automatic Windows Update reset.

When the manual sequence does not resolve it

Document the confirmed code, the full message, the update name or application operation, and the step at which the failure occurs. If 0x80070422 returns after the service has been enabled and the cache rebuilt, use Microsoft’s current Windows Update component-reset instructions for the installed Windows version or ask an administrator to perform them. If the exact value is still unclear, resolve the transcription issue first; no reliable remedy can be selected from 0x800700422 alone.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and diagnostic features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. Results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus software.
