0x800700422 is not a clearly documented Windows error code in the Microsoft material reviewed. It may be mistyped, copied incorrectly, or produced by a particular app rather than Windows itself. First confirm the exact characters and identify whether the message appeared in Windows Update, another installer, a browser, or a third-party utility. If the failure is in Windows Update, use the built-in troubleshooter, then check connectivity, storage, services, cache, and system files in that order.
What 0x800700422 means—and why the source matters
Windows error codes normally map to a defined condition, but the exact string 0x800700422 does not have a corroborating definition in the Microsoft support material relevant to Windows downloads and updates. That means it would be unsafe to claim that this code always means one specific problem, such as a damaged update cache or a missing system file.

The code could have been copied with one character missing or added. It could also be an application-specific message displayed by an installer or a support page rather than by Windows. The window, application name, and action that triggered it are therefore more useful than the number alone.

Confirm the code before changing Windows
- Reopen the error and compare every character, including the leading zero, the letter
x, and the number of digits. - Take note of the program that displayed it. Check whether the title bar says Windows Update, Microsoft Store, a device manufacturer, a game launcher, or another application.
- Record what Windows was doing: downloading an update, installing an update, upgrading to a new release, installing an app, or downloading a file in a browser.
- Keep the complete wording around the number. A sentence such as “download failed” provides more diagnostic context than the hexadecimal string by itself.
If the message came from a browser download or a single application, use that program’s repair, reset, or reinstall options before applying Windows Update procedures. The steps below are aimed at a Windows update or upgrade that stops downloading or installing.

Do these low-risk checks first
Microsoft groups update failures into several broad classes, including connection, storage, service, cache, and background-process problems. Checking these conditions first avoids unnecessary component resets.
Check the connection
- Open a few unrelated websites to confirm that the connection is working.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point or temporarily test a wired connection.
- Pause large downloads and streaming on the same network while Windows Update runs.
- If a VPN, proxy, corporate filter, or security product is blocking the update service, disconnect it only long enough to test the update, if your organization’s policy permits. Re-enable protection immediately after the test.
Check storage and power
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the free space on the drive containing Windows.
- Delete or move files only when you know they are not needed. Do not remove folders inside
C:Windowsmanually. - Connect a laptop to power and avoid forcing a shutdown while an update is installing.
Check date and time
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone settings, then select Sync now. An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections to update servers.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft’s first-line recommendation for an error while downloading and installing Windows updates is the built-in Update Troubleshooter. On current Windows 11 versions, use this path:

- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any proposed repair and allow the tool to finish.
- Restart the computer, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
The labels differ on some Windows 10 builds; look under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot for the Windows Update troubleshooter. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the conditional checks below rather than repeating it indefinitely.

Make sure the update services are running
Windows Update relies on background services. A disabled or stopped service can prevent a download even when the internet works.
- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and pressEnter. - Locate Windows Update. Its startup type should not be Disabled. If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start.
- Check Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). This service transfers files in the background; start it if it is stopped and its configuration allows manual or automatic operation.
- Check Cryptographic Services, which helps Windows verify update packages. Start it if necessary.
- Close the Services window, restart Windows, and try the update again.
Do not change service logon accounts or registry settings as a first response. On a work-managed computer, an administrator may intentionally control these services.
Reset the Windows Update download cache
Use this step when downloads repeatedly stall, an update remains stuck at the same percentage, or the troubleshooter points to cached update data. Resetting the cache removes temporary update files; it does not delete your personal documents. Windows will recreate the folder and download the packages again, so the next attempt may take longer.
Reset with an elevated Command Prompt
- Save work and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvcWait for each command to report that the service stopped. If a service was not running, continue.

- Open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin File Explorer and delete its contents, not the folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to the Command Prompt and verify that the services stopped. - Start the services again:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv- Restart the computer and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
If access is denied, the command window was not elevated, a service is still using a file, or a security policy is preventing the change. Do not force-delete locked files. On a managed PC, ask the administrator to perform the reset.
Repair Windows system files and update components
Use file repair when Windows reports damaged or missing system components, the troubleshooter cannot complete, or several unrelated Windows features are failing. These commands require an administrator account and can take time.
Run DISM, then System File Checker
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.

sfc /scannow- Restart Windows and try the update again.
System File Checker may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. A failure to repair everything is a reason to review the CBS log or seek Microsoft support, not a reason to delete system files manually.

When to reset more update components
Microsoft also documents resetting Windows Update components for repeated failures. A full component reset changes more than clearing the download cache and should be reserved for persistent, update-specific failures. Before using one, create a current backup and note any organization-managed update settings. If the computer belongs to a business or school, involve its administrator because policy-controlled components may be restored automatically.
Escalate persistent upgrade failures with installation media
An installation upgrade that fails repeatedly can sometimes be repaired with Microsoft’s current Media Creation Tool or a Windows ISO. This is an escalation path for applicable upgrade scenarios, not a universal answer to an unknown error code and not a guarantee that every download failure will be fixed.
Choose the least disruptive option
- In-place upgrade: Running setup from compatible Windows installation media can preserve files and applications when the edition, language, and architecture match. Read every setup screen carefully.
- ISO file: An ISO can be mounted in Windows and used to start setup without immediately booting from removable media.
- Bootable USB: A USB flash drive created with Microsoft’s media instructions is useful when Windows cannot start or when setup must run outside the current installation. Creating the media normally erases that USB drive, so copy any files from it first.
Back up important documents before an upgrade attempt. Confirm that you have the correct Windows edition and enough free storage for the specific upgrade path. Follow Microsoft’s current installation-media instructions for the release you are installing; requirements and screens can change between Windows versions.
What installation media cannot prove
If the original code came from a browser, a game launcher, or a third-party installer, Windows media may have no connection to the failure. Use it only after confirming that Windows setup or Windows Update is the component reporting the problem.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch
The error appears only in Windows Update
Run the troubleshooter, restart, and check again. If the failure repeats, verify services, reset the cache, and then run DISM and System File Checker. Keep the code and the complete Windows Update history entry for any support request.
The download reaches a percentage and rolls back
Check free space and restart the update services. A cache reset is appropriate when the same package repeatedly resumes or fails. Do not repeatedly interrupt an installation that has already entered the restart phase.
Only one application fails
Windows Update repairs are unlikely to address an application-specific download. Check that application’s account, download folder permissions, proxy settings, and built-in repair or reinstall option. Contact the application publisher with the exact message and its version.

Update policies, proxies, endpoint security, and service permissions may be centrally controlled. Ask the administrator before clearing caches, disabling security software, or using installation media.
Windows will not boot after an attempted upgrade
Stop repeating normal update attempts. Use Windows recovery options and a known-good backup, or bootable installation media, following Microsoft’s current recovery guidance. A clean installation can remove applications and personal data, so it should never be selected without a verified backup and a deliberate decision.
How to verify that the problem is resolved
- Restart Windows after the final repair step.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Allow the download and installation to complete without shutting down the computer.
- Open Update history and confirm that the relevant update shows as installed rather than failed.
- If the same code returns, capture the exact code, the update name or KB number, the stage at which it fails, and the result of the troubleshooter. This information distinguishes a download problem from an installation or application problem.
Do not treat a single successful restart as proof that every future update will work. The unidentified code has no established universal cause, so recurrence should be diagnosed from the new update and the full message.
