How to Fix Termux Package, Permission, and Storage Errors on Android

The correct Termux fix depends on the failing layer: a 403 or 404 usually points to a repository mirror, Permission denied usually involves Android storage permission or a protected path, programs that fail under /sdcard or ~/storage are running on a filesystem without all Unix features, No such file or directory during an upgrade can indicate critically low internal storage, and APK signature errors require a consistent installation source. Capture the complete command and error output before changing settings or reinstalling; the wording, path and Android context determine which remedy is safe.

Start with the evidence, not a reinstall

Termux errors that look similar can have completely different causes. A package download failure is not repaired by granting storage permission, and an Android APK signature conflict is not repaired by changing a package mirror. Before running a cleanup command, save the details that identify the layer involved.

  • Copy the complete command you entered and the full error text, including the first lines above the apparent failure.
  • Record the Android version and, if relevant, the phone manufacturer. Permission screens and storage restrictions vary between Android releases and device builds.
  • Note where Termux came from and whether every Termux plugin was installed from that same source.
  • Identify the path involved: Termux’s private $HOME, its package prefix $PREFIX, a link below ~/storage, a path such as /sdcard, or a protected Android application directory.
  • Check available internal device storage before repeating an upgrade.
  • If package commands fail, include the repository and mirror information shown by termux-info.

These six details let you choose one procedure instead of trying unrelated fixes that can remove data or weaken security.

Match the wording to the failure mechanism

Error or symptom Most likely mechanism First action
403, 404, “missing Release file,” or an inaccessible mirror during pkg update or installation Unavailable, obsolete or misconfigured repository mirror Check connectivity, inspect termux-info, then run termux-change-repo
Permission denied for a shared folder Android storage permission was never granted, was revoked, or the directory is protected Run termux-setup-storage and respond to Android’s prompt
A script or program will not execute under /sdcard or ~/storage Shared storage lacks Unix filesystem behavior required by the software Move the project, executable and package files into Termux’s private $HOME or $PREFIX
Writes to /usr, /bin or another system directory fail The command is targeting Android’s host filesystem, not Termux’s Linux-like userland Use Termux paths; install packages through its package manager
No such file or directory partway through a large upgrade, or downloaded archives disappear Android reclaimed cached package files because free storage fell below its threshold Free internal storage and retry, using smaller upgrade groups if necessary
INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE, INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE, or “signatures do not match previously installed version” Termux or a plugin came from a source with a different APK signing key Back up, remove the complete Termux/plugin set, then reinstall all of it from one source

The table is a triage aid, not a promise that one phrase has only one cause. The path, installation source and surrounding output take priority over a single line of text.

Repair repository and package-manager errors

Check connectivity and identify the active mirror

First make sure the device is online and that the failure is not a temporary network interruption. Then run:

termux-info

Review the repository and mirror details in its output. If the command reports a 403, 404, missing Release file or an unreachable address, do not bypass signature or integrity warnings. An old repository address can continue to fail even when the rest of the phone has working internet.

Change the mirror with the supported tool

Run:

termux-change-repo

Select a working Termux mirror for the main repository. The Termux project documents this remedy for obsolete or unreachable mirrors: “If that is the case, then run termux-change-repo command and change your mirror for the main repository to a different Termux Mirror.” Use the interactive list rather than pasting an unverified address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you enabled additional repositories, inspect and change their mirrors during the same process. A healthy main mirror does not repair a separate repository that is still pointing at an unavailable server.

Finish the switch cleanly

After choosing a mirror, update the package tooling and packages:

pkg upgrade

If you need a smaller first step, update the Termux tools package before attempting the full upgrade. The goal is to refresh the package-management components after the source change, not merely to retry the same failed URL.

When the package manager asks you to accept the documented repository Origin change caused by the mirror switch, review that prompt and accept the change you intentionally made. Do not accept arbitrary signature, checksum or integrity warnings just to make the command continue.

Remove obsolete repository entries

Old science-repo and game-repo entries should be removed. Those repositories were merged into main; keeping their old entries can produce failures even after the primary mirror is corrected. Remove only the obsolete entries, then run the upgrade again.

Use manual source editing only as a fallback

Some repositories cannot be selected through termux-change-repo. The official Termux package-management documentation describes changing the relevant source list manually for that case. This is intended for readers comfortable identifying the correct configuration file and editing it without altering unrelated repository lines. Make a copy of the file first, change only the failing source, and then run pkg upgrade. If you are unsure which file or line applies, stop and obtain the exact repository output rather than deleting configuration at random.

Restore access to shared storage

Run the storage setup command

Termux does not automatically expose Android shared storage as a normal Unix directory. In Termux, run:

termux-setup-storage

Android should display a permission prompt. Grant the requested storage permission, then test a generated link such as:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

ls -la ~/storage/shared

The setup command creates links below ~/storage to locations that Android makes available for file exchange. The exact visible folders can differ by Android version and device.

If permission worked before and then stopped

Android can revoke or change an app’s access. Open the system settings for Termux, revoke its storage permission, grant it again, and run termux-setup-storage once more. Settings names and menu paths differ by Android release and manufacturer, so look for Termux’s app-permission screen rather than relying on one universal sequence of labels.

Understand protected directories

A granted storage permission is not unrestricted access to Android’s private application data or every directory visible in a file manager. Android intentionally restricts some locations. Do not try to defeat those restrictions or expect Termux to read another app’s protected data directory. If the failing path is protected, choose an allowed shared location or use the owning app’s export feature.

Keep executable work inside Termux’s private filesystem

What $HOME and $PREFIX mean

Termux provides a private Linux-like userland inside its Android app data directory. Your Termux home directory is $HOME; installed packages and their libraries belong under $PREFIX, normally the usr directory adjacent to the home directory in the standard layout. These are not the same as Android’s host paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android’s host /usr, /bin and similar locations are not Termux’s package-install destinations. If a command tries to write there, the resulting permission error is a path mistake, not evidence that Termux’s package manager needs root access. Install software with Termux’s package tools and keep project environments in the Termux-private tree.

Use shared storage for exchange, not a Linux installation

Directories reached through ~/storage are useful for documents, downloads, photos and moving files between Android apps. They commonly use an emulated FAT-like filesystem that does not provide every Unix feature Linux software expects. Depending on the program, this can affect executable permissions, symbolic links, sockets, ownership, case behavior or other special-file operations.

Place the following in $HOME or an appropriate directory below $PREFIX:

  • Programs and scripts that must be executed by Termux.
  • Package archives and build directories.
  • Virtual environments, language toolchains and project trees that depend on Unix permissions or links.
  • Configuration and runtime files that require normal Linux filesystem semantics.

Copy finished documents or other exchange files to ~/storage/shared only when another Android app needs them. If a project currently lives on shared storage and fails, copy it into $HOME, run it there, and copy only its output back to shared storage.

Fix upgrades that fail with “No such file or directory”

Why a missing file can mean low storage

During an upgrade, Termux downloads the package archives needed for the transaction before installing them. Android monitors free space and may delete cached package files when available storage drops below its device-dependent threshold. The installer then reports that a file or directory is missing even though the original download step appeared to succeed.

This behavior is distinct from a typo in a path. Check internal device storage before repeating the same large command; shared-storage capacity does not substitute for the internal space Termux uses for its private filesystem and package cache.

Free space, then retry in smaller groups

  1. Close or remove unnecessary large files and apps using Android’s storage controls, while preserving any Termux data you need.
  2. Reopen Termux and retry the package operation after confirming that internal free space has increased.
  3. If a full upgrade still fails, update smaller groups of packages rather than requesting one very large transaction. This reduces the amount of archive data that must remain available before installation.
  4. Read the first failure in the new output. If it changes to a mirror error, return to the repository procedure instead of continuing to delete files.

Do not treat deleting random files under $PREFIX as a storage remedy. Removing package-managed files can create a second, harder-to-diagnose broken environment.

Resolve APK signature and plugin installation conflicts

Recognize an installation-source mismatch

Termux APKs and their plugins are signed by the source that built them. Android compares those signatures during an update. If the installed app came from one source and the update or plugin came from another, Android can report INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE, INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE or “signatures do not match previously installed version.” This is an APK identity conflict, not a package-repository or storage-permission problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose one source for the complete set

Keep the Termux app and every Termux plugin on one consistent installation source. If you decide to switch sources:

  1. Back up Termux data first. Uninstalling the app can remove its private data, so do not begin with an uninstall if the only copy of your files is inside $HOME.
  2. Record which plugins you use and preserve any exported configuration or project files in a location that will survive app removal.
  3. Uninstall the existing Termux app and all of its installed plugin APKs. Leaving one old plugin behind can preserve the signature conflict.
  4. Install Termux from the chosen source, then install the compatible plugins from that same source.
  5. Restore your backed-up files and verify the app and plugins before beginning a large package upgrade.

There is no safe in-place conversion between differently signed APK families. The destructive part of this procedure is why the backup belongs before the first uninstall.

A recovery workflow for mixed or unclear symptoms

When several errors appear together, work from the least destructive check to the most disruptive repair.

  1. Capture context. Save the command, complete output, Android version, installation source, path and available internal storage.
  2. Classify the path. If it is below ~/storage or /sdcard, test whether the operation belongs in private storage instead. If it names Android’s protected data, stop trying to bypass the restriction.
  3. Check permission. For a shared-folder access error, run termux-setup-storage; if access was revoked, reset Termux’s Android permission and run the command again.
  4. Check storage capacity. Before a large upgrade, free internal space. A disappearing archive during installation is a reason to reduce transaction size.
  5. Check repositories. For 403, 404, Release-file or mirror errors, inspect termux-info, use termux-change-repo, correct extra repositories and run pkg upgrade.
  6. Check APK identity. Only after data is backed up should you address a signature mismatch by removing and reinstalling the complete app/plugin set from one source.

At each stage, rerun the smallest command that tests that stage. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect record and avoids turning one failure into several.

Prevention and safe operating habits

  • Keep package installations and executable projects in Termux’s private filesystem; use shared storage as an exchange area.
  • Keep the Termux app and plugins from the same installation source, and note that source before attempting updates.
  • Maintain enough internal free space for both downloaded archives and the installed packages required by an upgrade.
  • When a mirror fails, change it with the supported repository tool instead of accepting unsigned or unexplained integrity warnings.
  • Remove obsolete science-repo and game-repo entries rather than repeatedly retrying them.
  • Back up important files before uninstalling Termux or changing its installation source.
  • Keep the exact error output available when asking for help; a screenshot that omits the command and path often hides the deciding clue.

When the documented fixes do not resolve it

Stop before deleting more configuration if the failure persists after the matching procedure. Provide the complete command and output, Android version, Termux source, plugin source, affected path, internal free-space status and termux-info output for package failures. Those details distinguish a device-specific Android restriction, a damaged private installation, an unsupported path or a repository issue that needs further investigation. Do not claim that a single permission menu, mirror or reinstall sequence works identically on every Android release.
