How to Fix Taskwarrior Sync Errors and Conflicts (Taskwarrior 2.x and 3.x)

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by identifying your Taskwarrior major version and sync backend. Taskwarrior 3.x uses a local database and TaskChampion-based synchronization; legacy Taskwarrior 2.x commonly uses Taskserver. Their error messages may look similar, but their fixes are not interchangeable. In particular, Taskserver does not work with Taskwarrior 3.x, and file-level tools such as Syncthing or rsync are unsupported for the 3.x database.

Run task --version, note the backend you configured, then follow the matching diagnostic path below. Make a backup before recovery steps that can change replicas, and never publish credentials, sync keys, certificates, or private task text in a support request.

1. Identify the version and synchronization method

Most wasted troubleshooting time comes from applying a Taskwarrior 2.x remedy to a 3.x installation. Record both the version and the mechanism that is supposed to move tasks between devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run task --version on the machine showing the error.
  2. Determine whether synchronization is configured for a TaskChampion/current Taskwarrior 3.x server, a cloud-storage integration, local or Git synchronization, or a legacy Taskserver.
  3. Write down the server hostname, port, and configuration file location if a network endpoint is involved.
  4. Run task diagnostics and save the output privately. It identifies build features and useful configuration details.
Installation Data and sync model Use these instructions Do not do this
Taskwarrior 3.x Tasks are stored in a local database; synchronization is implemented by TaskChampion. Use a supported TaskChampion server, documented cloud option, local method, or Git method for your edition and configuration. Do not synchronize the database directory with Syncthing, rsync, Dropbox, or another file copier.
Taskwarrior 2.x with Taskserver Tasks are synchronized through the Taskserver protocol, normally over TLS. Check DNS, firewall, server status, certificates, GnuTLS support, and sync-key initialization. Do not apply 3.x database guidance or assume a Taskserver endpoint can serve a 3.x client.
Legacy file-sharing setup A shared .task directory is copied by a file-hosting service. Treat conflicts as a limitation of file sharing and move to a task-aware method where possible. Do not use this approach for a Taskwarrior 3.x local database.

The official Taskwarrior syncing documentation says: “As of Taskwarrior 3.0, tasks are stored in a local database in a format that is not amenable to this sort of synchronization.” That is why a file copy can appear to succeed while leaving a damaged or divergent database.

2. Choose a supported 3.x sync path

Taskwarrior 3.x does not use the old Taskserver workflow. The current manual describes server, cloud, local, and Git alternatives, while TaskChampion supplies the synchronization mechanism. Choose one method deliberately instead of combining several tools against the same data.

TaskChampion sync server

The TaskChampion server is described as HTTP-based. Taskwarrior encrypts task data before synchronization so the server does not receive the task contents in unencrypted form, according to the official syncing documentation. This describes that design; it is not a blanket security guarantee for every third-party service, client, or deployment. You still need to protect account credentials, endpoint access, backups, and device storage.

Cloud, local, and Git options

The task-sync(5) manual for task-3.5.0 documents cloud-storage and local or Git approaches in addition to a server. Check the instructions for your installed edition before changing backends. A local or Git method may avoid an always-on network endpoint, but it does not make concurrent edits safe if the underlying method cannot understand and merge Taskwarrior changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why file synchronization is unsafe in 3.x

Syncthing, rsync, Dropbox, and similar tools copy database files; they do not understand Taskwarrior transactions or merge task records. Concurrent writes, partial copies, or an old database replacing a newer one can corrupt data. Stop the file synchronizer, preserve every copy, and restore from a known-good backup rather than repeatedly retrying a file-level merge.

3. Fix “Taskwarrior sync failed” and “Could not connect”

For a legacy Taskwarrior 2.x client connecting to Taskserver, a connection failure is usually a path problem before it is a task conflict. Work from the client outward.

Check the hostname and DNS

  1. Compare the hostname in the Taskwarrior configuration with the server’s actual fully qualified domain name. Correct spelling, punctuation, and the selected environment (production versus test).
  2. Resolve the name using your operating system’s normal DNS tools. If it does not resolve, correct DNS or use the documented address temporarily to distinguish naming from service problems.
  3. Make sure the hostname used here is also the name covered by the server certificate; changing to an unrelated alias can create a later TLS failure.

Check the port and firewall

The legacy troubleshooting guide cites port 53589 as the default Taskserver port. A deployment may use another configured port. Confirm that the client, intervening firewall, VPN, and server firewall all allow the selected TCP port. An open port only proves that something accepts a connection; it does not prove that the Taskserver protocol or TLS configuration is correct.

Check that Taskserver is running

Verify the Taskserver service on the host, inspect its service logs, and confirm that it is listening on the expected address and port. If the service was recently upgraded, check that its configuration still points to the intended certificate, key, database, and organization data. A client-side retry cannot repair a stopped or misconfigured server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate network failure from authentication failure

Record whether the client times out, refuses the connection immediately, completes a TLS handshake and then rejects credentials, or reports a sync-key error. Those observations select different remedies. Include the exact message in a private diagnostic record rather than treating every “sync failed” result as the same problem.

4. Fix “Certificate fails validation, Handshake failed”

These messages belong to the TLS stage of a legacy Taskserver connection. Do not disable hostname validation as a routine workaround; it removes the check that prevents a client from trusting a certificate issued for another host.

Verify certificate identity

The certificate’s common name (and, where applicable, its subject-alternative names) must match the server’s fully qualified hostname. The hostname in the Taskwarrior client configuration must be the same identity covered by the certificate. If users connect through an alias, issue a certificate that includes that alias or change the configuration to the certified name.

Verify trust for a self-signed certificate

A self-signed server certificate is not trusted automatically. Configure the corresponding certificate authority in the client as described by your Taskserver deployment, and make sure the file is readable by the account running Taskwarrior. Installing an unrelated certificate, or copying a certificate without its required trust chain, will continue to produce validation errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check protocol compatibility

  • Confirm that the client and server have at least one TLS cipher in common.
  • Check that both the client and server certificates are within their validity periods.
  • Verify the system clocks; a clock far in the past or future can make a valid certificate appear expired or not yet valid.
  • After changing certificates or TLS settings, restart the relevant service and retry with the exact same hostname.

The official legacy troubleshooting guide covers certificate identity, CA configuration, cipher overlap, and expiration. Its detailed remedies are for Taskwarrior 2.x and Taskserver, not for a Taskwarrior 3.x TaskChampion setup.

5. Fix “Taskwarrior was built without GnuTLS support. Sync is not available”

This message means the installed legacy binary lacks the TLS library support required for its sync implementation. It is a build capability problem, not evidence that the server is down.

  1. Run task diagnostics and inspect the library and feature information, including whether libgnutls is detected.
  2. Confirm which executable is being run and whether an older binary earlier in PATH is shadowing the package you intended to use.
  3. Install a distribution build that includes the required GnuTLS support, or rebuild the applicable source package with the dependency enabled.
  4. Run task --version and task diagnostics again after replacement, then retry sync.

The Taskwarrior FAQ includes rebuild guidance for an applicable source-build case. Follow the instructions for your operating system and release rather than copying build flags from an unrelated version. If you cannot replace the binary, use Taskwarrior locally and export your diagnostics for the package maintainer; do not treat a missing TLS feature as a certificate error.

6. Fix “Client sync key not found” (legacy Taskserver)

On the legacy system, the official troubleshooting page attributes “Client sync key not found” to skipping task sync init. That command initializes the local sync key and uploads pending tasks to the configured Taskserver.

  1. Stop and back up the local task data and the relevant configuration before initializing anything. Keep the backup separate from any automated file synchronizer.
  2. Confirm that the client is pointed at the intended Taskserver, organization, and user account. A key created for another server or organization will not solve the problem.
  3. Run task sync init only after verifying the endpoint and credentials. Follow the prompts and note whether pending local tasks are uploaded.
  4. Run a normal sync and check another authorized device for the expected task set.

Initialization can alter the relationship between local and remote replicas. If the local database contains unique work, preserve the backup and stop when the command proposes an unexpected replacement or deletion. This procedure is specifically for the legacy Taskserver workflow; do not run it as a generic fix on a Taskwarrior 3.x TaskChampion configuration.

7. Understand “There are local changes. Sync required.”

This notice means Taskwarrior detected a change in the local working copy. It does not prove that the server is unreachable, and it does not tell you whether another device has remote changes. The command documentation explains that you do not have to sync immediately and that running sync as often as desired is safe when connectivity and configuration are correct.

When to sync

If your backend is configured and reachable, run the normal sync command after completing a local edit. A pending-change notice can remain while you are offline, intentionally batching work, or investigating another error. Do not delete local data merely to clear the notice.

When a notice becomes a conflict investigation

Investigate replicas when two devices edited the same task while disconnected, when a sync reports divergent histories, or when tasks appear to disappear after a backend change. Stop making new edits, export or back up each copy, identify the newest trusted state, and use the backend’s task-aware merge or recovery procedure. A local notice alone is not evidence of corruption.

8. Resolve conflicts without losing tasks

Back up before recovery

Make dated, read-only copies of each device’s task data and configuration before repair. Include the local database or .task directory as appropriate for the version, but do not continue syncing those copies while deciding which one is authoritative. Preserve server-side backups if you administer the endpoint.

Know the undo limitation

The current manual warns that once changes have been synchronized to a server, previous operations can no longer be undone through Taskwarrior’s normal undo mechanism. If you suspect accidental deletion or a bad merge, stop syncing and preserve the pre-sync backup before attempting restoration.

Legacy shared-directory conflicts

The task-sync(5) manual warns that sharing a legacy .task directory through file hosting can create conflicts when two locations edit while disconnected. The file host copies files; it does not merge tasks properly. Treat this as a documented legacy limitation, not a recommended design for Taskwarrior 3.x’s database.

Use one authoritative recovery path

  1. Choose the copy that contains the most complete, independently verified task history.
  2. Export or record tasks unique to the other copy before replacing anything.
  3. Restore through the synchronization method’s documented import or recovery process, not by overwriting a live database with a random copy.
  4. Sync one device first, verify task counts, projects, due dates, and annotations, then reconnect additional devices one at a time.

If you cannot determine which copy is complete, stop and ask for help with sanitized diagnostics. Guessing can turn a recoverable divergence into permanent data loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Compare sync approaches before changing backend

Compatibility and merge behavior matter more than convenience. The following comparison reflects the methods described in current Taskwarrior documentation; security, cost, and maintenance vary by deployment and are not interchangeable.

Method Version fit Who operates the endpoint Network requirement Merge behavior Operational trade-off
TaskChampion server Taskwarrior 3.x You or a service operating a TaskChampion-compatible server Reachable HTTP endpoint Understands Taskwarrior synchronization rather than copying database files Requires endpoint administration, credentials, backups, and TLS or deployment review.
Documented cloud-storage option Taskwarrior 3.x where supported by the installed manual The selected cloud service Access to the cloud service Use only the integration’s supported task-aware workflow Availability, retention, privacy, and account controls depend on that service.
Local method Taskwarrior 3.x where configured You, on local storage or a controlled local network May work without an Internet service Depends on the documented local mechanism; do not substitute file copying Simple infrastructure can mean more responsibility for backups and device access.
Git method Taskwarrior 3.x where configured You or your Git hosting arrangement Needed to exchange repositories between devices Follow the Taskwarrior-aware workflow; ordinary database-file merges are unsafe Provides history, but repository security and conflict handling remain your responsibility.
Taskserver Legacy Taskwarrior 2.x You or a Taskserver operator Configured TCP service, commonly port 53589 Taskserver protocol Requires legacy TLS, certificates, GnuTLS support, and sync-key management; it does not serve Taskwarrior 3.x.
Shared .task directory Legacy setups only A file-hosting or file-copy system Whatever the file host requires Does not properly merge disconnected edits Documented as conflict-prone and unsuitable for the Taskwarrior 3.x database.

10. Collect useful diagnostics before asking for help

Diagnostics are more useful when they show expected versus observed behavior without exposing private information.

  1. Run task --version and record the operating system and package source.
  2. Run task diagnostics. For a legacy Taskserver installation, run taskd diagnostics as well.
  3. Record the exact command, timestamp, backend, hostname, port, and complete error wording.
  4. For a connection failure, note whether DNS resolution, TCP connection, TLS negotiation, authentication, or task transfer is the first failing stage.
  5. Use the verbose client and server debug modes described in the legacy troubleshooting guide when ordinary diagnostics do not identify the stage.
  6. Before posting logs, remove passwords, sync keys, private keys, bearer tokens, certificate secrets, server addresses that must remain private, and task descriptions or annotations. The Getting Help documentation explains how to prepare support information.

Send the sanitized output together with the version and backend. A report that says only “sync failed” cannot distinguish a DNS outage from an expired certificate or an unsupported build.

11. Fast decision tree

  • Version is 3.x: stop using Taskserver instructions and file-level synchronization. Confirm the TaskChampion, cloud, local, or Git method documented for your installation.
  • Version is 2.x and the client cannot connect: check hostname and DNS, firewall and port, then Taskserver availability.
  • The error mentions certificate validation or handshake: verify certified hostname, CA trust, cipher overlap, expiration, and system time.
  • The error mentions missing GnuTLS: inspect task diagnostics and install or rebuild a binary with the required library support.
  • The error says client sync key not found: back up first, verify the legacy endpoint, and use task sync init only for that legacy workflow.
  • The message says sync required: treat it as a local pending-change notice; sync when convenient after connectivity and configuration are correct.
  • Tasks diverged or disappeared: stop syncing, preserve every replica, and recover through one verified, task-aware path.
