Diagnose the match in this order: confirm the gameplay mode and active tactic, check for a defensive-midfield screen, relate line height to the space you are conceding, review FC IQ roles, then defend transitions with patience. EA SPORTS FC 26 does not provide one universal setup that prevents every through ball; the reliable fix is matching your tactic and decisions to the specific way your defense is breaking.
Why a defense becomes “wide open” in FC 26
Space usually appears because several small choices combine during a transition. Your defensive midfielder may have moved toward the attack, your full-back may have stepped out to press, and your line may be high enough for one pass to reach the area behind it. Alternatively, a very deep block can give the opponent time to turn, combine and choose a pass. Looking only at the formation hides the actual cause.

FC 26 also has two gameplay contexts. EA describes Competitive gameplay as the environment aimed mainly at online modes such as Ultimate Team and Clubs. Authentic gameplay is the default for Manager Career and Player Career and can also be selected in Kick Off. A setting that feels manageable in one context is not automatically a solution in the other, so identify the mode before changing tactics.
In its FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive, EA’s FC Gameplay Team—Keegan Sabatino, Gigo Navarro and Thomas Caleffi—states that “the defensive line will not automatically push up as far when trying to keep players offside.” That version-specific change means an offside trap is not a guarantee that every defender will spring forward together. Your shape still has to protect the space left when the first pressure is beaten.

Step 1: Confirm the mode and the tactic that is actually active
Separate Competitive from Authentic advice
First write down where the problem occurs:
- Ultimate Team or Clubs: treat the match as Competitive gameplay and evaluate the online transition speed and pressure you are facing.
- Manager Career or Player Career: Authentic gameplay is the default, so assess the behavior in that context rather than assuming an online tactic will translate exactly.
- Kick Off: check which gameplay preset is selected; Authentic is available as an option, so the same menu can contain either context.
This does not mean Competitive or Authentic is “better.” It means you should not diagnose a Career match with assumptions taken from an online setup. Record the mode alongside every tactic change so you know which version of the problem you are solving.
Make sure you are editing the selected preset
FC 26 lets you maintain tactical presets and switch between them. Pause the match and verify the tactic marked as active before editing anything. If the match is using a different preset, changing its line height, roles or instructions will have no effect on the next attack.
Also check any tactic code you imported. EA notes that Line Height is saved in tactics codes, so a code can restore a depth value you did not expect. After loading a code, inspect the active tactic rather than trusting the code’s name or the formation shown in a menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 2: Find the missing midfield screen
When the opponent reaches your center-backs with no midfielder between the lines, the first question is not “Which formation is meta?” Ask whether a defensive midfielder is positioned to protect the area in front of the center-backs during a turnover.
What a useful screen does
A screening midfielder gives you time to switch to a center-back, close the passing lane or delay the ball carrier. The player does not need to win the ball immediately. Occupying the central lane can force the opponent toward a less dangerous angle and lets your back line recover its spacing.

Watch the first three seconds after you lose possession. If both central midfielders are ahead of the ball and the opponent can pass directly at your center-backs, the tactic lacks transition protection. If one midfielder is present but repeatedly arrives late, inspect that player’s FC IQ role and the instructions attached to the active tactic.
Why Box Crasher can expose the center
EA specifically describes Box Crasher as a defensive-midfielder role that joins attacks, is slow to return to defensive duties and does not prioritize defensive actions. That behavior can be useful when you deliberately want extra runs into the box, but it is a poor first choice when your recurring symptom is an unprotected central channel.

You do not have to rebuild the entire formation. Start by replacing or repositioning the attacking defensive-midfielder role so one player remains available to screen transitions. Then play several possessions and observe whether the same counterattack still reaches the center-backs. If the problem remains, review the other midfielder and the full-backs; a screening role cannot cover two wide players who have both sprinted beyond the ball.
Step 3: Adjust line height to the space you are actually conceding
Line height is a trade-off, not a magic number. A high line can compress the distance to the opponent’s midfield and put more pressure on the ball, but it can also leave space behind the defenders when the first press is bypassed. A very deep line protects the area behind it while giving the opponent more room to build, turn and pass near the edge of your block.
Use the location of the chance as your evidence
| What you see | Likely pressure point | First adjustment to test |
|---|---|---|
| One pass sends a runner behind your center-backs before you can switch players. | The line is being exposed in depth, or the midfield screen is absent. | Check the defensive midfielder and lower line height slightly, one change at a time. |
| The opponent receives between your midfield and defense, turns, and chooses a pass. | The block is too deep or the ball carrier is not being delayed. | Try a modestly higher line or improve jockeying and screening before making a large tactical change. |
| Your full-back is pulled wide and the opponent immediately attacks the channel inside him. | The press is dragging the back line out of its spacing. | Keep the full-back with the winger longer and use the midfielder to close the inside lane. |
| Your defenders are separated after an unsuccessful offside attempt. | You are relying on an automatic push that FC 26 no longer performs as far as before. | Stop forcing the trap; delay the ball and recover a compact shape. |
There is no established ideal numeric depth for every formation, mode or patch. Change one line-height setting, play enough possessions to see the same type of attack, and compare the result with the previous setting. Large simultaneous changes prevent you from knowing which decision helped or hurt.

Step 4: Audit FC IQ roles and the broad tactic profile
Open the tactic’s breakdown rather than judging it only by the formation graphic. EA’s breakdown covers Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance. These categories help you identify an imbalance: for example, a tactic may generate attractive attacking movement while asking too many players to leave their defensive zones.
Check defensive responsibility first
- Identify the player who should occupy the space in front of the center-backs when possession changes.
- Check whether that player’s role prioritizes attacking runs over recovery.
- Look at both full-backs. If they are advancing together, decide which player protects the space when the ball is lost.
- Confirm that your central defenders are not being pulled into wide areas before the ball carrier is controlled.
The goal is not to remove every attacking role. It is to make sure the attack has a defined cost and that at least one player remains capable of slowing the counter. If the breakdown shows strong attacking tendencies but your chances against come immediately after turnovers, reduce the most aggressive role first rather than changing five settings at once.
Step 5: Defend the transition instead of chasing the ball
FourFourTwo’s FC 26 defending guide recommends measured pressure, keeping a CDM in front of the defense during transitions, and jockeying a wide attacker with the full-back instead of rushing into a tackle. Treat that as practical guidance, not an official guarantee that one input will stop every attack.
Use a three-stage response
- Delay. Select the player nearest the ball carrier, but stay between the carrier and the most dangerous forward pass. Your first objective is to make the opponent take another touch or pass sideways.
- Screen. Keep the defensive midfielder in front of the center-backs when the ball is central. Do not immediately drag that player toward a winger if doing so opens the lane you are trying to protect.
- Challenge. Tackle only when the touch is loose, the passing lane is covered or support has arrived. A desperate early tackle can remove your only defender from the play.
Against a winger or wide overload
Use the full-back to jockey the winger and protect the inside route. Sprinting straight at the attacker can create a simple cutback or a pass into the channel behind you. Show the attacker toward the sideline when you have cover, then switch to the screening midfielder or center-back if the ball moves inside. The full-back’s job is to buy time, not necessarily to win the ball on the first contact.
When the opponent is preparing a through ball
Do not stare only at the passer. Track the runner’s lane with a center-back or defensive midfielder while keeping enough distance to react to a short pass. If you step out too early, the runner can receive behind you; if you retreat too far, the passer can carry the ball into shooting range. Delay until the passer’s options narrow, then close the ball or intercept the predictable lane.

Step 6: Review the same failure pattern and iterate
After each match, name the first event that made the defense unstable. “We conceded a goal” is too broad; “both midfielders were ahead of the ball when possession changed” is actionable. Use the following review sequence:
- Replay or recall the first dangerous transition, not only the final goal.
- Mark where the ball was lost and where the first unmarked opponent appeared.
- Identify whether the gap came from role movement, line height, a missed jockey, or a defender being pulled out.
- Change one factor in the active tactic.
- Play enough attacks to see whether the same failure repeats.
- Only then decide whether a second adjustment is necessary.
This process is slower than importing a formation, but it distinguishes a structural problem from an execution error. If the midfielder is in the correct area and you still concede, the next review may reveal that you are switching to the wrong defender or tackling before support arrives.
Choosing between common fixes
| Choice | What it improves | What it can cost | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raise line height | Reduces some space between your midfield and the opponent’s buildup. | Can increase the space behind the defense when pressure is bypassed. | You are allowing uncontested turns in front of the box and can delay the ball consistently. |
| Lower line height | Protects the area behind the center-backs. | May give the opponent time and room to circulate the ball. | Runners repeatedly receive behind your line before you can switch. |
| Use a more defensive midfield role | Improves the chance that one player remains available during a counter. | Removes some attacking runs and box presence. | Your central protection disappears immediately after losing possession. |
| Keep a Box Crasher | Adds a late attacking runner from defensive midfield. | EA says the role is slow to return and does not prioritize defensive actions. | You have another reliable screen and consciously accept the transition risk. |
| Jockey and delay | Buys time for teammates to recover and reduces rushed passes. | Requires patience; the attacker may still retain possession. | You are conceding because the first defender dives in and is bypassed. |
| Immediate tackle or aggressive press | Can win the ball quickly when the opponent’s touch is poor. | A missed challenge opens a larger lane than the original threat. | You have cover behind the challenger and a clear opportunity to win the ball. |
None of these choices is universally superior. The correct option depends on whether your priority is space behind the line, pressure on the ball, midfield coverage or additional attacking movement.
Mode-specific checks before you change anything
Competitive online matches
In Ultimate Team and Clubs, use Competitive as the reference context. Check the active tactic immediately after kickoff, especially if you rotate between presets. When an opponent counters, prioritize the central screen and measured jockeying; a tactic that looks aggressive on the team sheet can become fragile if the first press is beaten.
Career and Kick Off with Authentic gameplay
Career modes use Authentic by default, and Kick Off can use it as well. Confirm the selected preset before comparing a Career result with advice made for online play. If you switch gameplay contexts, repeat the diagnosis rather than assuming the same line height or role will behave identically.
Common mistakes that keep the defense exposed
- Changing an inactive tactic: the match continues to use the selected preset, not the one you edited.
- Copying a depth number without identifying the symptom: the same value can protect one formation and expose another.
- Using Box Crasher while asking for a permanent screen: EA’s description explicitly warns that the role is slow to recover and not focused on defensive actions.
- Pulling the CDM toward every wide threat: this can open the central lane you needed to protect.
- Pressing with the nearest defender and abandoning the runner: the opponent can pass into the space you just created.
- Expecting an automatic offside push: FC 26’s notes say the defensive line will not automatically push up as far when trying to catch attackers offside.
- Changing several variables after one goal: you lose the evidence needed to identify the real cause.
A pre-match and in-match checklist
Before kickoff
- Confirm whether the match uses Competitive or Authentic gameplay.
- Confirm which tactic is active.
- Inspect Line Height, including any value restored by a tactics code.
- Identify the defensive midfielder responsible for screening the center.
- Review whether a Box Crasher or another attacking role leaves that area uncovered.
- Check the tactic breakdown’s Defence, Width, Length and Build-Up tendencies.
When possession is lost
- Delay the ball carrier instead of sprinting into an automatic tackle.
- Keep a CDM between the ball and your center-backs when the threat is central.
- Jockey a winger with the full-back and protect the inside channel.
- Track the runner’s lane before stepping toward the passer.
- Recover the shape if the first press is beaten; do not force an offside trap that is not developing.
After the match
- Describe the first dangerous gap precisely.
- Change one role, line-height setting or defensive habit.
- Observe multiple possessions before judging the adjustment.
- Recheck the active tactic if nothing changed.
What the evidence can—and cannot—promise
EA’s FC 26 notes establish the Competitive and Authentic contexts, the changed offside-line behavior, FC IQ role characteristics and the tactical breakdown categories. FourFourTwo supplies the practical principles of measured pressure, a CDM screen and patient jockeying. Together they support a diagnostic method, not a ranked formation or a guaranteed depth setting.
Gameplay balance and role behavior can change with patches. Recheck the active tactic after an update, and treat any number copied from an older guide as a starting point rather than a permanent answer. The most durable fix is a defense that has a clear screening player, a line height suited to the space you concede and a defender who delays the attack long enough for the shape to recover.
