How to Fix TABLES.SYS Errors in Microsoft Dynamics GP

The safest way to fix a TABLES.SYS error is to identify which object is actually failing before changing anything. In Microsoft Dynamics GP, the message may involve a damaged SQL table, corrupted stored-procedure resources in Procs.sys or Procs.cmp, missing support tables in SQL Server TEMPDB, or the physical tables.sys resource file. These are different failures with different repairs. First record the exact message and GP version, make verified backups, and then use the matching procedure below.

What TABLES.SYS means in Dynamics GP

Dynamics GP (formerly Great Plains) uses Dexterity and SQL resources to create and maintain company-database objects. Files such as tables.sys and procs.sys are installation resource files; they are not, by themselves, the data tables that hold your transactions. A TABLES.SYS message can therefore be a symptom rather than a precise diagnosis.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Typical messages say that GP cannot find a table, cannot create or open a table, cannot execute a procedure, or cannot log in. The failure may occur while GP starts, when a user logs in to a company, while posting, when opening a window, or during report generation. A separate login failure names DEX_LOCK or DEX_SESSION and points to SQL Server TEMPDB, not to a company table.

Do not delete or replace a SYS file, drop a SQL table, or run a script until you know which of these cases you have. Recreating the wrong object can remove data, break a customization, or leave all companies unable to start.

Identify the failure before repairing it

Capture the exact error and context

  1. Copy the complete error text, including the table, procedure, database, or file name. Take a screenshot if the dialog truncates the message.
  2. Write down the GP release and build, the Windows computer where the client is running, the SQL Server instance, and the company database that fails.
  3. Record when it happens: GP startup, login, opening a particular window, posting, month-end, printing, or running a report.
  4. Ask whether every company and every user is affected, or only one company, one workstation, one window, or one third-party module.
  5. Check whether the message specifically names a physical tables.sys or procs.sys file, a SQL object, a procedure, DEX_LOCK, or DEX_SESSION.

A table name in the message generally calls for SQL-object recreation through the Professional Services Tools Library (PSTL). A procedure or Procs.sys/Procs.cmp reference calls for the procedure-script method. DEX_LOCK and DEX_SESSION during login call for the dex_req.sql method. A missing or damaged resource file requires checking the GP installation and release-specific Microsoft guidance before attempting legacy resource extraction.

Back up and isolate the system first

Microsoft’s published procedures require users to be out of GP while objects are recreated. Treat the following as prerequisites, not optional precautions:

  • Have every GP user exit all companies and confirm that no scheduled integration, reporting job, posting process, or service is still connected.
  • Take a full SQL backup of the DYNAMICS database.
  • Take full backups of every company database that could be affected, not only the company named in the error.
  • Make a separate backup copy of the GP code and installation folder, including the folders containing tables.sys, procs.sys, Procs.cmp, and SQL utility scripts.
  • Verify that the backups can be read or restored to a test location. A backup that has never been checked is not a reliable rollback plan.
  • Write down custom triggers, views, stored procedures, integrations, and third-party products that use the affected table. A table recreation can require those objects to be restored manually.

Use an account with the permissions required by the selected method. PSTL access is normally restricted to an administrator; the SQL script procedures require a SQL account permitted to alter the target databases, and the TEMPDB procedure is documented for an sa-level connection. If you cannot obtain those permissions, stop after backing up and involve your Dynamics GP support partner or a SQL Server consultant who works with GP.

Recreate a damaged SQL table with PSTL

For a message that identifies a GP table, Microsoft’s documented GUI route is the Professional Services Tools Library Toolkit. The exact series and table names depend on the installed GP release and modules.

Open the SQL-object recreation screen

  1. Start Dynamics GP with an administrator account after all other users have logged off.
  2. Open the Toolkit area in PSTL.
  3. Choose Recreate SQL Objects, then select Next.
  4. Select the series that owns the failing table. For example, a table used by purchasing belongs to a different series than one used by inventory or manufacturing.
  5. Select the specific table named in the error. Do not select an entire series unless Microsoft’s instructions for your release require it.

Preserve rows when they must remain

Before confirming the operation, select Recreate data for selected table(s) when the existing rows must be retained. Microsoft’s PSTL documentation states that marking this option recreates the table while leaving its data intact. If the option is left unmarked, PSTL recreates the table and the data is lost. The checkbox is therefore the critical data-preservation decision in this procedure.

  1. Choose Recreate Selected Table.
  2. Read the confirmation and maintenance messages. Do not interrupt GP or SQL Server while the object is being rebuilt.
  3. When the process completes, close and reopen the affected GP window, then test the original operation with a controlled record or inquiry.
  4. Check row counts and key records against the backup or a pre-maintenance report. Confirm that indexes, permissions, and application behavior are normal.

Account for custom triggers and integrations

PSTL recreates the selected SQL table, but a custom trigger attached to that table may not be restored automatically. Record the trigger definition before maintenance when possible, and have your database administrator verify it afterward. Also test integrations, reporting views, e-commerce feeds, and third-party windows that read or write the table. If the table was part of a customization, the customization vendor may need to reinstall its SQL objects after the base table is rebuilt.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

If PSTL reports that it cannot recreate the object, stop rather than repeatedly retrying. Review the SQL error, confirm that the selected series and company are correct, and check that no user or service still holds a lock. A failed recreation is a reason to restore the backup or escalate, not to drop additional objects manually.

Recreate stored procedures with Procs.sys or Procs.cmp

Use this path when the error names a stored procedure or explicitly references Procs.sys or Procs.cmp. Microsoft’s procedure applies to GP 9.0-era and later releases, but Manufacturing and other earlier releases can use different script names and folders. Match every step to the release installed at your site.

Prepare the scripts

  1. Log every user out of GP and complete the database and code-folder backups described above.
  2. Locate Procs.cmp and the relevant Procs.sys scripts in the GP installation or product folders. Do not use a script copied from another release.
  3. Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Older environments may use SQL Server Query Analyzer, as described in the legacy Microsoft procedure.
  4. Read the script comments before executing anything. Where the script contains %SysDBName%, replace that token with the exact target database name as instructed.

Run against each required database

Execute Procs.cmp against each affected company database, using the database selector or an explicit database context exactly as the release documentation specifies. Then execute the relevant Procs.sys scripts against the DYNAMICS database. If more than one company is installed, repeat the company-database step for each one that uses the affected module; a procedure restored in one company does not automatically repair another database.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Review the SSMS results for errors after each script batch. Save the output so a consultant can see the first failure, not only the final message.
  2. Reconnect GP and test the operation that originally failed. Test both the affected company and a second company if the procedure is shared.
  3. Check custom procedures and triggers that depend on the rebuilt procedures. Reapply a customization only from its vendor’s documented script and only after the base GP objects work.

Do not improvise a procedure name or run every SQL file in a folder. Earlier releases, Manufacturing components, and localized installations can use different file layouts. If the script refers to a database that does not exist, or if execution produces conversion or permission errors, stop and verify the release-specific instructions with a GP administrator.

Repair missing DEX_LOCK or DEX_SESSION tables in TEMPDB

A GP login failure that specifically says DEX_LOCK or DEX_SESSION is missing is a separate SQL Server TEMPDB problem. Recreating a company table or replacing tables.sys will not fix it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the error occurs during GP login and names DEX_LOCK, DEX_SESSION, or both.
  2. Ensure users are out of GP and that you have a recent backup, even though this procedure targets support tables rather than company transaction tables.
  3. Connect to the SQL Server instance in SSMS using the administrative account required by the Microsoft procedure; the documented case uses sa.
  4. Find dex_req.sql in the GP installation folder. The documented default location is under SQLUtility, although the actual path can differ by release and installation choice.
  5. Open the script in SSMS and execute it according to the script’s database instructions. Verify that the required support tables are created in the SQL Server TEMPDB database.
  6. Have a test user log in to the affected company. If login succeeds, test posting or the window that originally exposed the problem.

TEMPDB is recreated by SQL Server when the instance restarts, so a change that appears to work can be lost after a restart if the underlying GP or SQL configuration is wrong. If the tables disappear again, capture the SQL Server version, startup behavior, and script output and escalate rather than repeatedly running the script without diagnosis.

When the physical tables.sys file is missing or corrupt

If the message explicitly identifies the file on disk, first verify the GP client’s installation path, file permissions, antivirus quarantine history, and whether the file exists on a working GP workstation running the same release and build. A file from another release, language, or service-pack level can be incompatible even when its name is identical. Repair or reinstall the same GP build using your organization’s approved media and preserve the original folder for comparison.

A practitioner article published on October 2, 2008 describes adding duExtractSQLResources=TRUE to dex.ini to rebuild tables.sys and procs.sys. This is legacy, version-sensitive advice, not a universal fix. Use it only after backups, only after confirming that your GP release supports the setting, and only after checking current Microsoft guidance or your GP partner’s instructions. Do not add the setting blindly to a modern installation or treat a successful extraction as proof that the SQL objects are healthy.

Validate the repair and prevent a repeat

Functional checks

  • Repeat the exact action that produced the error, not just GP startup.
  • Open the affected inquiry or window, create a controlled test transaction, and reverse or remove the test according to your accounting controls.
  • Run a relevant report and verify that totals and historical rows match a pre-maintenance report or backup.
  • Test integrations, scheduled processes, and third-party windows that use the rebuilt table or procedure.

Technical checks

  • Review SQL Server Agent and SSMS messages for errors from the maintenance window.
  • Confirm that the rebuilt object has the expected name, columns, indexes, permissions, triggers, and row count.
  • Check all company databases, not just the database used for the first test.
  • Keep the pre-repair backups and script output until users have completed a normal posting and reporting cycle.

Escalate when the evidence does not fit

Stop and obtain specialist help when the error changes after each attempt, the table is part of a third-party product, a custom trigger is undocumented, the backup cannot be verified, or SQL reports corruption beyond the named object. Give the consultant the exact error, GP build, database names, backup status, script output, and a list of steps already performed. That information is more useful than a general request to “fix TABLES.SYS.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes that make TABLES.SYS incidents worse

  • Dropping the table first: this can permanently remove rows and does not preserve custom SQL objects.
  • Leaving data recreation unchecked: PSTL then recreates the table without its existing data.
  • Running scripts while users are connected: locks and concurrent writes can produce partial or misleading results.
  • Using the wrong company or database: a procedure can succeed in SSMS while repairing the wrong environment.
  • Copying SYS files between releases: resource formats and product components are version-sensitive.
  • Treating every message as a file problem: DEX_LOCK and DEX_SESSION indicate TEMPDB support tables, while a named GP table generally calls for PSTL.
  • Ignoring custom triggers: the base table may work while an integration silently fails after recreation.
  • Relying on an untested backup: without a restorable copy of DYNAMICS, company databases, and the code folder, recovery options are limited.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks
