Stop guessing that your internet is simply “too slow.” First determine whether the stutter affects every app or only one service, whether you are casting from a supported app or a computer browser, and whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi have trouble. Then work from reversible checks—network placement, restarts, updates and casting support—before buying an adapter or resetting anything.

Why is my TV buffering when I cast?

Video reaches the television through several links: the streaming service, your phone or computer, the router, and the receiving device. A fault in any one of them can look like the same symptom: pauses, a spinning indicator, dropped quality or repeated reconnects.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Network path: weak Wi-Fi at the TV, radio interference, too many active devices, router firmware problems or an internet-service outage can interrupt delivery.
  • Device or app path: an overloaded receiver, outdated app or browser, unsupported Chromecast generation, or restricted permissions can prevent reliable playback.
  • Casting path: some websites do not support browser-to-TV casting at all. In that case, a stronger router cannot make an unsupported workflow work.

There is no universal bandwidth number in the official troubleshooting material that guarantees smooth casting. Treat speed as only one variable; stability, coverage, compatibility and service status matter just as much.

Run this two-minute triage before changing settings

  1. Check the scope. Play a different video in another app. If only one title or service fails, investigate that service before touching the router.
  2. Try another sender. Cast from a second phone, tablet or computer on the same network. If one sender works and another does not, update or repair the failing app or browser.
  3. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. A phone or laptop that also buffers points toward the network path. It is a diagnostic clue, not proof that the router is the only cause.
  4. Watch the failure mode. A missing cast button or receiver usually indicates discovery, permissions or support; a video that starts and then pauses is more often a delivery, load or service problem.
  5. Confirm the route. Note whether you selected a Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, used AirPlay, or attempted a browser tab cast. The correct fix depends on that route.

When every app or device buffers

Start with the physical network path. These steps are low risk and reversible.

Move the router and receiver closer

Google’s Chromecast connection guidance recommends placing the router within 20 feet of the streaming device while troubleshooting. This is a placement instruction, not a guaranteed Wi-Fi range or a promised buffering threshold. Keep the receiver away from the back of the television, dense bundles of cables and other wireless electronics where possible. A short temporary test with the router and TV in the same room can reveal whether distance or obstructions are involved.

Restart in a clean order

  1. Stop casting and close the streaming app.
  2. Unplug the streaming device or TV for about a minute, then reconnect it.
  3. Power-cycle the router: disconnect power, wait, reconnect and allow it to finish starting.
  4. Reopen the app, confirm the receiver appears, and test the same video again.

A restart clears a stalled playback session; it does not repair an unsupported website or an internet outage.

Check router firmware and network load

Install any router firmware update offered by the manufacturer. Look at the router’s connected-device list and pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates or high-resolution streams during the test. If several household devices are active, retest with only the casting device and receiver connected. If all devices still fail, check the router or internet provider’s outage status before purchasing equipment.

Choose the Wi-Fi band your exact model supports

When both router and receiver support dual-band Wi-Fi, Google advises testing 5 GHz for its streaming devices. Five gigahertz can be less congested but generally loses strength faster through walls, so compare actual stability rather than assuming one band is always better. First-generation Chromecast is 2.4 GHz-only; it cannot join a 5 GHz network. Verify the generation and the router’s band settings before changing anything.

Would Ethernet stop the stutter?

A wired connection removes the Wi-Fi link between the router and receiver, so it is a sensible test when playback improves near the router but fails in the TV’s usual location. It cannot cure internet-provider congestion, a service outage, an unsupported browser route or a defective receiver.

Choice Advantages Limitations and checks
Wi-Fi No cable run; convenient for wall-mounted or distant TVs. Performance varies with distance, walls, interference, band and household load.
Ethernet Predictable local link and less exposure to wireless interference. Requires a nearby router cable and a receiver that accepts a compatible adapter.
Mesh Wi-Fi Can improve coverage where the router signal is weak in the TV room. Costs more and will not fix unsupported casting or a service-side fault; establish a coverage problem first.

Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV can use Ethernet but do not include an Ethernet jack, according to Google. They require a separately sold, model-compatible Ethernet adapter. Check the exact Chromecast generation, power connector and adapter requirements before ordering. An adapter that fits physically may still be incompatible electrically or with the device’s firmware.

When only one service, browser or video freezes

A single-service failure is a compatibility investigation, not a reason to replace the router immediately.

Update the software and compare titles

  1. Update the streaming app on the phone or tablet and update the browser on the computer.
  2. Play a different title from the same service.
  3. Try the same title without casting, directly on the sender or on the TV’s own app if available.
  4. Sign out and back in only if the service’s own troubleshooting asks for it; avoid deleting saved settings unnecessarily.

If one title fails everywhere, the provider may have a content or account issue. If every title fails only when cast, inspect the provider’s supported casting method.

Browser casting is not universal

A cast icon in a browser does not mean every website supports sending its video to a television. TVNZ+ explicitly says computer-browser casting to Chromecast is unsupported for its service. Its documented alternatives are the TVNZ+ mobile app or an HDMI connection from the computer to the television. This is a service-specific rule, not a statement about every website.

For an unsupported browser route, use the provider’s supported phone or tablet app, or connect the laptop directly with an HDMI cable for a laptop and TV. HDMI bypasses browser casting, but the computer must remain awake and playing the video.

Check receiver-generation support

TVNZ+ documents the following compatibility for its own service:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Chromecast generation TVNZ+ behavior
Generation 3 and newer Fully supported.
Generation 2 Some content may play at lower quality.
Generation 1 Unsupported.

Do not apply this matrix to other providers. Each service can impose different minimum generations, codecs or app requirements. Netflix’s Chromecast help likewise begins with setup checks and then directs users to device-specific troubleshooting and app or browser updates.

Why does Chromecast keep stuttering even though the cast button works?

Discovery can succeed while the actual stream remains unstable. Once the receiver appears, the video still depends on the router-to-receiver link and the provider’s delivery path.

  • Run the near-router test described above. Improvement at short range points to coverage or interference.
  • Pause other high-load devices and retest.
  • Try the other supported Wi-Fi band for your exact receiver.
  • Test a different app. If only one provider stutters, keep working on that provider’s app and compatibility rather than network hardware.
  • If the receiver is old, check the provider’s minimum-generation guidance before spending on accessories.

Do not interpret a temporary improvement after restarting as proof that the router is permanently fixed; repeated recurrence suggests firmware, coverage, load or device-health work is still needed.

When the cast target is missing or setup fails

Verify the same local network

For Google Cast, the sender and receiver must be on the same Wi-Fi for discovery and control. Check the network name on both devices; a phone on a guest SSID and a Chromecast on the main SSID may have internet access but still be unable to see each other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable isolation that blocks local devices

Google identifies AP isolation, client isolation and some guest-network modes as causes of failed communication with its streaming devices. In the router’s wireless or guest-network settings, allow devices on the same network to communicate. Menu names vary by manufacturer; do not disable security controls on a managed network without the administrator’s approval.

Avoid captive-portal networks

Networks that require a web sign-in—common in hotels, schools, halls and businesses—can prevent setup and communication. Google says its streaming devices do not support captive-portal networks. Use a permitted personal hotspot or another supported network rather than trying to bypass the portal.

Check iPhone and iPad permissions

During Google Home setup on iPhone or iPad, Google lists Bluetooth and Local Network access as required checks. In the device’s privacy and app-permission settings, allow those permissions for Google Home, then retry discovery. These permissions address setup and visibility; they do not by themselves repair a weak streaming link.

Why does AirPlay keep disconnecting?

AirPlay has a separate troubleshooting path. Apple’s guidance, published September 23, 2025, says to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep compatible devices powered on and near one another.
  2. Install current software on the source, receiver and router where updates are offered.
  3. Put both AirPlay devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Enable AirPlay receiving in the receiver’s settings.
  5. Restart both devices and try again.
  6. Check Home settings for restrictions that could block AirPlay.

If the picture is present but silent, check mute and volume on both the source device and the television or receiver. That is an audio-setting problem, not buffering.

Use this decision table to choose your next action

What you observe Most useful next step What not to assume
Several apps buffer on the TV and another device on the same Wi-Fi also struggles. Check router placement, firmware, connected-device load and internet-service status; restart both router and receiver. That a new streaming device will fix the network.
Playback improves when the receiver is near the router. Reduce obstructions, test the other supported band, or consider Ethernet or a coverage solution. That 5 GHz is automatically best in every room.
Only one app or provider fails. Update the app or browser, test another title and verify the provider’s casting support. That the router needs replacement.
The cast target never appears. Confirm same Wi-Fi, local-device permissions and that isolation or a captive portal is not blocking discovery. That buffering settings are the cause.
Computer-browser casting fails for one service. Use the service’s mobile app or connect the computer to the TV by HDMI. That every website supports browser casting.

How to run a useful before-and-after test

Change one variable at a time so you know which step helped. Start the same video at the same point, note whether it pauses, drops quality or disconnects, and test for several minutes. First compare the TV in its normal position with a temporary near-router position. Then restore the original position before trying a different Wi-Fi band. If you change the router, app and receiver simultaneously, a temporary improvement will not identify the cause.

Record whether the cast control remains connected while the picture pauses. A connected control session with buffering suggests delivery or load; a disappearing receiver suggests discovery, isolation or permissions. Also note whether the problem follows the sender, receiver or title. This information is more useful to a provider or router manufacturer than a generic report that “casting is slow.”

Requirements to verify before buying anything

Write down the exact receiver name and generation, the sender operating system, the app or browser version, the Wi-Fi band, and the router model. Check the provider’s help page for supported casting routes and minimum device generations. For an Ethernet purchase, verify the connector and power arrangement for that exact model. For HDMI, check the computer’s output port, the TV’s input and whether a separate video adapter is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy an adapter because it is merely described as “for Chromecast.” A physically similar accessory can be intended for another generation. Likewise, a mesh system is justified only when the near-router test and other placement checks demonstrate a coverage problem. New hardware cannot correct a provider outage, a captive portal, an unsupported browser workflow or an account-specific title failure.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Assuming internet speed is the whole diagnosis. A stable local link and a supported casting route matter even when a speed test looks good.
  • Putting the sender on a guest network. Internet access alone does not guarantee that Google Cast devices can discover one another.
  • Forcing 5 GHz on an old receiver. First-generation Chromecast is 2.4 GHz-only, and a distant 5 GHz signal may be less stable than 2.4 GHz.
  • Resetting before documenting settings. A reset removes configuration and can require Wi-Fi credentials, account sign-in and complete setup again.
  • Blaming the TV when the service blocks browser casting. Use the supported mobile app or HDMI route instead.

When to buy an accessory—and when not to

Compatible Ethernet adapter

Buy one only after a short-range or wired test indicates Wi-Fi instability and you have confirmed the exact Chromecast or Google TV Streamer model and connector. Place the adapter beside the diagnosed receiver problem; it is not a cure for provider outages or unsupported browser casting.

Mesh Wi-Fi system or router

Consider a mesh system only after free placement, restart, firmware and load checks establish that coverage is the limiting factor. A mesh can improve signal reach, but it introduces new nodes, configuration and cost. Verify that the receiver can roam reliably and that the improvement reaches the TV location.

HDMI cable

An HDMI cable for a laptop and TV is the direct workaround when a service does not support computer-browser casting. Confirm the computer’s output connector, the TV input and the required resolution before buying an adapter cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Factory reset is the last resort

Reset the streaming device only after confirming the network, app support, permissions and software updates. A factory reset erases the device’s configuration and can require Wi-Fi credentials, account sign-in and complete setup again. Record the current network name and account details first, then follow the manufacturer’s reset and setup instructions exactly. If the same service still fails after a clean setup while other services work, return to the provider’s support path rather than repeating resets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my TV buffering when I cast?

The problem may be the Wi-Fi link to the receiver, network load, an outdated app, an unsupported casting route or the streaming service. Test another app and device, then check placement, restarts, updates and support before buying equipment.

How do I stop video from buffering when casting?

Move the router and receiver closer, pause heavy network activity, restart the router and receiver, update software and test the Wi-Fi band supported by your exact model. If Wi-Fi is the weak link, a compatible Ethernet adapter may help.

Why does casting from my browser keep freezing?

Browser casting is service-dependent. TVNZ+ does not support computer-browser casting to Chromecast; use its mobile app or connect the computer to the TV with HDMI. Other providers may have different rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Chromecast keep stuttering even though the cast button works?

Discovery only proves that the devices can communicate initially. The stream can still be affected by distance, interference, network load, receiver generation or provider delivery. Compare playback near the router and in another app.

Can I use Ethernet with Chromecast?

Google says Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV support Ethernet through a separately sold adapter because they do not include an Ethernet port. Confirm the exact model, connector and adapter compatibility first.

Why is my Chromecast missing from the cast list?

Confirm the sender and receiver use the same Wi-Fi, then check AP or client isolation, guest-network restrictions, captive portals and Google Home’s Bluetooth and Local Network permissions on iPhone or iPad.

Why does AirPlay keep disconnecting?

Keep compatible devices near each other, update their software, put them on the same Wi-Fi, enable AirPlay receiving, restart both devices and check Home settings for restrictions. If only sound is missing, check mute and volume instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I factory-reset the streaming device?

Only after network, compatibility, permissions, updates and placement checks. A reset erases configuration and can require Wi-Fi credentials, account sign-in and complete setup again.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose the scope first: one service, one sender, one receiver or the whole network. Then verify the supported casting route, same-network status and exact device generation; improve placement and reduce load; restart and update; and test Ethernet or mesh coverage only when the evidence points to Wi-Fi. Use the provider’s app or HDMI for unsupported browser casting, and leave factory reset for last.
