Start by removing conflicts and testing one variable at a time. Turn off NVIDIA Smooth Motion when a game is using native DLSS Frame Generation, disable Frame Generation during menus, loading screens and display-mode changes, reduce motion blur, and retest with the game’s own settings. If the problem remains in one title while other games work normally, the likely fault is that game’s Frame Generation integration and may require a patch rather than new hardware.
DLSS Frame Generation creates intermediate frames from game-rendering data. The generated image depends on correctly supplied, correctly aligned color, depth, motion-vector and interface data. When a game supplies bad or missing data, the result can be stutter, flickering, ghosting, broken characters, unstable HUD elements or color errors. The practical guide below separates settings you can change from defects only the developer can repair.

What DLSS Frame Generation is—and why it can stutter or flicker
DLSS Frame Generation inserts AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. It is not simply a faster display mode: the algorithm needs a current final-color image plus motion and depth information that describe where objects and the camera moved. The game must also identify which pixels belong to the HUD and other interface elements.

A player cannot repair a missing motion-vector buffer from a graphics menu, which is why a persistent, title-specific problem can need a game update.

There are also user-controllable situations in which the generated frame is being asked to represent a scene that is not changing normally. Pausing, loading, opening menus, changing resolution, switching between fullscreen and windowed mode, or stopping game rendering can leave Frame Generation with unsuitable input. NVIDIA recommends disabling it during those transitions and re-enabling it once normal gameplay has resumed.
DLSS features are not identical across games or GPU generations. NVIDIA’s integration guidance describes Frame Generation support for GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series cards in DLSS 4-era implementations, while other DLSS components have different requirements. Confirm the requirements and options for the specific title instead of assuming that every game exposes the same controls.
Quick diagnosis: identify the pattern before changing settings
Use the symptom pattern to decide which test to run first. Record the game’s resolution, display mode, Frame Generation state, Smooth Motion state, motion-blur setting and driver version so you can return to a known configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| What you see | Most useful first check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Stutter begins after enabling another frame-generation option | Turn off Smooth Motion and leave native DLSS Frame Generation on | The two technologies were competing; they should not be stacked. |
| Flicker or unstable HUD appears in menus, loading screens or after changing display mode | Disable Frame Generation before the transition, then re-enable it after gameplay settles | The feature was active while the game was not producing ordinary gameplay frames. |
| Double-looking motion blur or smeared moving objects | Lower motion blur, preferably by about half, and repeat the same camera movement | Blur applied to generated and rendered frames may be amplifying the artifact. |
| Magenta tint, severe latency increase or persistent stutter in one title | Return to the native game setting and check for a game patch | Incorrect integration constants or Reflex/Frame Generation mismatch may be involved. |
| Artifacts occur in several games with ordinary settings | Verify support, driver state and per-game overrides before considering hardware | A broad software or system issue is possible, but the evidence does not make a particular hardware replacement the default fix. |
Step 1: Do not combine native DLSS Frame Generation with Smooth Motion
NVIDIA’s driver documentation calls native DLSS Frame Generation and Smooth Motion competing technologies and says they should not be used together. Running both can lower performance and create visual artifacts, even when each option appears to work by itself.
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings and identify whether its own DLSS Frame Generation option is enabled.
- Open the NVIDIA graphics controls for that title and set Smooth Motion to Off while testing native Frame Generation.
- Restart the game if it requests a restart. Reproduce the same scene, camera movement and combat effect that exposed the problem.
- Compare only two states: native Frame Generation on with Smooth Motion off, then native Frame Generation off with Smooth Motion still off. Do not change resolution, quality preset or sharpening between those tests.
If the artifacts disappear with Smooth Motion disabled, keep the technologies separate. If the issue remains in both tests, continue with transition, motion-blur and support checks rather than enabling both features again.
Step 2: Disable Frame Generation during menus, pauses and display changes
Generated frames are intended for a continuously rendered game view. NVIDIA’s integration checklist recommends disabling Frame Generation while the game is paused or loading, in menus, while changing resolution, when switching fullscreen and windowed modes, and whenever the game is not rendering normal frames. The recommendation is intended to preserve stability during those state changes.

- Before opening a pause or graphics menu, turn Frame Generation off if the game exposes a live toggle. If it does not, make the change from the graphics menu before entering the transition that causes the artifact.
- Apply resolution or display-mode changes with Frame Generation off. Wait until the game has returned to an interactive scene.
- Re-enable Frame Generation, apply the setting and restart the title if prompted.
- For loading screens and cinematics, leave the feature off if the game offers no safe automatic handling. Do not judge image quality from a menu thumbnail or loading screen.
This test is especially important when the flicker is concentrated around UI panels, inventory screens, map overlays or the first seconds after a level loads. If normal gameplay is clean but a menu still flickers, that menu may not be supported by the title’s integration; report the exact screen and transition to the developer.
Step 3: Reduce motion blur when Frame Generation is enabled
Motion blur is applied by the game, while Frame Generation adds images between rendered frames. The combined effect can make moving edges look doubled or smeared. NVIDIA’s integration checklist advises reducing motion-blur distance or magnitude by half when integrating Frame Generation. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal required value.
- Find Motion Blur, Motion Blur Amount, Blur Distance or a similarly named control in the game’s graphics or camera settings.
- Halve the current value, or select a lower preset. If the game uses only an on/off switch, turn it off for the comparison.
- Replay the same repeatable movement: a slow camera pan, a sprint past thin geometry and a quick turn toward a bright HUD element are useful checks.
- Keep the lower value only if it improves the image without making camera movement uncomfortable. Otherwise, restore the game’s preferred value and investigate integration or other settings.
Lowering blur cannot repair missing depth or motion-vector data. It is a controlled image-quality test for doubled blur, not a general cure for every DLSS artifact.
Step 4: Verify the game’s support and your component combination
DLSS components have varied hardware and software requirements, and support is implemented per game. A title may expose Super Resolution but not Frame Generation, or may require a particular GPU generation, driver branch or game patch. NVIDIA’s DLSS integration guidance recommends checking the requirements and validating the feature in the specific title.
- Confirm that the game lists DLSS Frame Generation as a native option rather than relying on an unrelated driver feature.
- Check the title’s current patch notes and graphics settings documentation for known Frame Generation issues.
- Verify that your GPU generation is supported by that implementation. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 integration article describes Frame Generation support on GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series GPUs; do not extend that statement to every DLSS component.
- Update the game and graphics driver through your normal, trusted channels, then retest with default graphics settings before applying overrides.
- Check whether the problem occurs only with a particular API, display mode, resolution or upscaling preset. Record the combination when filing a bug report.
A feature can be technically available yet poorly integrated in a particular build. A clean result in another game does not prove that this title’s implementation is correct, and a problem in one game does not by itself prove that the GPU is defective.

Step 5: Test NVIDIA App overrides carefully
NVIDIA App overrides are optional controls for compatible games and applications. NVIDIA’s instructions place them under Graphics > Program settings. Availability, menu labels, supported titles and driver requirements can change, so treat the exact controls shown by your current app as authoritative.

- Open the NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
- Open Program settings and choose the affected game.
- Change only the DLSS-related option you are testing. Note the original value before applying it.
- Launch the game, reproduce the same scene and compare it with the game’s native setting.
- To remove the override, select Use the 3D application setting. Restart the game if the app or title requests it.
An override that improves one scene may worsen another. If image quality becomes less stable, revert to Use the 3D application setting and continue testing the native implementation. Do not use an override and Smooth Motion simultaneously with native Frame Generation while diagnosing the cause.
How to run a reliable one-variable comparison
Randomly changing several graphics options makes a stutter report impossible to interpret. Use the following sequence and keep everything else fixed:
- Choose a repeatable location with the original symptom. A saved game, benchmark replay or consistent route is better than a random firefight.
- Start with native Frame Generation off, Smooth Motion off and motion blur at the game’s current value. Observe for at least the same duration in every test.
- Enable native Frame Generation only. Note stutter, flicker, ghosting, HUD stability and input feel separately; a high frame counter does not guarantee clean output.
- Disable native Frame Generation and lower motion blur. This isolates blur-related smearing from generated-frame errors.
- Restore the original blur, enable native Frame Generation and test the transition cases: pause, menu, loading, resolution change and fullscreen/windowed switch.
- If the game supports an NVIDIA App override, compare the override with Use the 3D application setting while leaving every other variable unchanged.
Capture a short video that includes the whole screen, the graphics settings and the exact transition that triggers the fault. Note the game version, driver version, GPU model, resolution, refresh rate, API, DLSS mode, Frame Generation state, Smooth Motion state and motion-blur value. Those details are more useful to a developer than a statement that the game “looks broken.”

NVIDIA’s Streamline checklist describes several developer-side failure modes. It says that Frame Generation needs depth, motion-vector, HUD-less color and UI color buffers that are present and aligned to the same frame. Invalid or mismatched buffers can make objects tear apart, flicker or disappear while the HUD remains unstable.
The checklist also warns that incorrect constants can mismatch Frame Generation and Reflex integration, producing magenta-tinted imagery, increased input latency and stutter. Those constants live in the engine integration; an ordinary player cannot safely edit them through the graphics menu.

- The title is patched and the GPU, driver and feature combination is supported.
- Smooth Motion is off, transitions are tested with Frame Generation disabled, and motion blur has been reduced.
- The same scene is clean with native Frame Generation off but consistently broken when it is on.
- Other games using the same GPU and driver do not show the symptom.
Report the reproducible case to the game developer with your captured evidence. Ask whether the issue is known for the specific patch, renderer or display mode. A title update may be the only durable fix; repeatedly reinstalling drivers or buying a different cable does not correct missing engine data.
Where NVIDIA Reflex fits
Reflex is part of NVIDIA’s recommended Frame Generation integration checklist because latency and frame pacing depend on how rendered and generated frames are scheduled. Its presence does not prove that Reflex is the cause of an individual player’s stutter. Do not infer a diagnosis merely because a game offers a Reflex toggle.
When reporting a problem, record whether Reflex is off, on or set to a boosted mode, and test one state at a time if the title allows it. Keep Frame Generation and Smooth Motion decisions separate from the Reflex comparison so that a change in latency is not confused with a change in image quality.
Common failure modes and recovery actions
Stutter appears only after changing resolution
Return to the previous resolution, disable Frame Generation, apply the new resolution, wait for the game to settle, then re-enable Frame Generation. If the game still stutters only at the new mode, keep Frame Generation off for that mode and check for a title update.
Flickering is limited to the HUD or menus
Test with Frame Generation off in those states and during loading. If the 3D world is stable but interface elements flicker, the title may be supplying incorrect UI or HUD-less color data. Document the exact interface and report it rather than changing hardware.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ghosting improves when motion blur is reduced but does not disappear
Keep blur low enough for comfortable play, then test native Frame Generation against off in the same scene. Residual trails can reflect the game’s temporal reconstruction or motion-vector quality, not only the blur slider.
Best Value
Magenta tint or sudden input delay appears
Disable Frame Generation, restore the game’s native DLSS setting, turn off any NVIDIA App override and verify the title’s patch and driver. Persistent magenta output or latency spikes are consistent with the integration mismatch described in NVIDIA’s checklist and should be reported to the developer.
Performance is lower with two frame-generation options enabled
Turn Smooth Motion off when native DLSS Frame Generation is on. Compare again after a full game restart. Do not treat the combined result as a valid performance baseline because NVIDIA explicitly warns against using both technologies together.
What not to do
- Do not stack Smooth Motion and native DLSS Frame Generation while troubleshooting.
- Do not evaluate Frame Generation from a pause menu, loading screen or while changing display mode.
- Do not change resolution, upscaling mode, sharpening, blur and driver overrides at the same time.
- Do not assume a higher displayed frame rate means fewer artifacts or lower latency.
- Do not buy a GPU, monitor, cable or cooling accessory as a generic fix. The available guidance supports software, support and integration checks, not a universal hardware remedy.
- Do not edit internal engine buffers or constants unless you are the game’s developer and have the appropriate integration documentation.
Decision guide: keep, disable or report
| Outcome after testing | Recommended action |
|---|---|
| Native Frame Generation is clean after Smooth Motion is disabled | Keep native Frame Generation on and Smooth Motion off for that title. |
| Artifacts occur only during transitions | Disable Frame Generation before pauses, menus, loading and display changes; re-enable after normal rendering resumes. |
| Lower motion blur removes the visible smear | Use the lower blur setting if its camera feel is acceptable. |
| Native Frame Generation is clean in other games but broken in one patched title | Use native Frame Generation off in that title and send a reproducible bug report; wait for a developer fix. |
| An NVIDIA App override worsens quality | Choose Use the 3D application setting and retest the game’s native option. |
| The problem persists across supported games and clean transitions | Collect driver, game, display and setting details, then investigate the broader system configuration. The evidence does not establish one particular replacement component as the answer. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Smooth Motion and DLSS Frame Generation together?
No. NVIDIA’s driver guide identifies them as competing technologies and warns that combining them can reduce performance and create visual artifacts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does Frame Generation flicker in menus but look fine during gameplay?
Menus and loading screens may not provide the continuous, correctly aligned game-frame data that generated frames require. Disable Frame Generation during those states and re-enable it after gameplay resumes.
Is motion blur the cause of every DLSS artifact?
No. Reducing blur is a targeted test for doubled or smeared motion. Missing buffers, incorrect alignment and integration mismatches can produce flicker, broken geometry, unstable HUD elements or magenta output that blur settings cannot fix.
Does a high frame counter prove Frame Generation is working correctly?
No. Frame rate, image stability and latency are separate observations. Compare the same scene with one variable changed and watch for flicker, ghosting, HUD instability and input response.
Should I replace my graphics card or monitor?
Not as a first response. Verify game support, disable competing features, test transitions, reduce motion blur and remove overrides first. A title-specific integration defect may require a patch, and the available guidance does not establish a universal hardware replacement.
Which GPUs support DLSS Frame Generation?
Support depends on the DLSS component and the game’s implementation. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 integration guidance describes Frame Generation support for GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series GPUs; check the current requirements for your specific title rather than generalizing that statement to every DLSS feature.
