What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix open-world RPG problems in a controlled order: confirm the game meets its requirements and is installed on suitable storage, update the graphics and DirectX stack, remove overlays and mods, lower the settings that affect frame times, repair game files and shader data, then isolate launcher, driver, profile, or hardware faults. An SSD is particularly important for long loads; Bethesda explicitly advises Starfield players to use an SSD rather than an HDD.
Identify which problem you actually have
Stutter, a crash while loading a save, and a five-minute loading screen can share a cause, but they do not always require the same fix. Start by recording when the failure occurs: during traversal, in a crowded settlement, immediately after changing graphics settings, only with one save, or after the computer has been running for a while. That timing helps separate asset-streaming limits from damaged files, incompatible mods, and system instability.

| Symptom | Most useful first checks | What it usually tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Brief pauses or uneven frame delivery while moving through the world | Background applications, overlays, graphics settings, driver state, shader cache, and storage type | The game may be waiting for assets, compiling shaders, or competing for CPU, GPU, memory, or disk time. |
| Crash when loading one save | Mods, launch options, file integrity, shader data, and whether other saves load | A save-specific script or asset problem is more likely than a general performance limit. |
| Every save or a new game crashes | Requirements, drivers, DirectX, launcher conflicts, and a clean installation test | The fault is probably global to the installation or system. |
| Long initial loads or frequent loading pauses | HDD versus SSD, free space, background disk activity, and shader rebuilding | High storage latency or a first-run shader rebuild may be the bottleneck. |
| Stutter followed by a blue screen, forced restart, or power-off | Temperatures, cooling, hardware health, and Windows diagnostic files | Steam identifies this pattern as a computer-level problem, not merely a game setting. |
Change one variable at a time and write down the result. Changing the driver, five graphics options, the mod list, and the storage location in one session makes it impossible to know which change helped.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Confirm requirements, installation location, and a clean test environment.
- Update the GPU driver and required DirectX components.
- Disable overlays, remove launch options, and temporarily remove mods.
- Reset and then reduce the settings with the largest frame-time cost.
- Repair game files and, when appropriate, shader-cache data.
- Isolate persistent crashes with a launcher reset, clean driver install, or new Windows profile.
- Escalate blue screens, restarts, shutdowns, and overheating as hardware or system faults.
Step 1: Confirm the baseline before changing anything
Check the title’s minimum requirements
Compare your processor, graphics card, system memory, operating-system version, and available storage with the game’s own minimum requirements. Use the requirements for the exact edition and platform you play; a later expansion or high-resolution texture package can raise the practical requirement even when the base game has not changed. If the machine is below minimum specifications, lowering a few options may reduce load but cannot guarantee stable frame times or prevent crashes.

Check where the game is installed
For a modern open-world game, an HDD can make asset streaming and loading inconsistent even when average frame rate appears acceptable. Bethesda’s Starfield crash guidance says to ensure the game is installed on a solid-state drive rather than a hard disk drive. Treat that as a requirement for the affected title, not as a promise that an SSD will cure every crash.
Leave usable free space on the game volume. Windows, the launcher, shader compilation, and temporary patch files all need working room. If the drive is nearly full, free space before judging a storage upgrade. Also check whether another process is copying, synchronizing, indexing, or scanning the same disk during play.
Make a clean baseline test
Restart the computer, launch only the game and its required launcher, and close browsers, capture tools, RGB utilities, file synchronizers, and other programs that consume CPU, memory, GPU overlays, or disk bandwidth. Steam’s support guidance recommends reducing unnecessary startup and running applications; Bethesda’s Skyrim guidance likewise begins with requirements and background programs. Test the same location or save after every change so the comparison is meaningful.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step 2: Update the graphics and DirectX stack
Install the current GPU driver
Download the current driver for your graphics processor from its manufacturer and reboot after installation. A driver update can fix a known game compatibility issue, but it can also expose a corrupted installation that needs a different remedy. Record the driver version before changing it so you can revert or report it accurately.
Check DirectX components
Bethesda lists current graphics drivers and required DirectX components as first-line checks for Starfield, Skyrim, and Fallout troubleshooting. A game may start with a partially installed component and then fail when it reaches a particular effect or loading path. Repair or install the DirectX components requested by the game’s official support instructions rather than downloading unrelated driver packs from third-party sites.

Choose a normal update or a clean reinstall
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Routine driver update | The driver is old, the game recently added support for a new version, or several games show ordinary rendering problems. | Fast and minimally disruptive, but it may preserve damaged files or settings. |
| Clean or factory-reset installation | Crashes began after a driver change, installation errors are suspected, or a normal update did not alter the behavior. | More effective at removing a corrupted installation, but custom profiles and per-game settings may be reset. |
Bethesda’s advanced Starfield workflow specifically recommends a clean or factory-reset driver installation when the basic checks do not resolve a crash. Use the manufacturer’s clean-install option and reboot; do not combine it with several other changes until you have tested the game once.
Step 3: Remove overlays, launch options, and mod conflicts
Disable overlays for one test session
Turn off the Steam Overlay and Xbox Game Bar while testing Starfield, as Bethesda recommends. Other overlays can also hook into the rendering process, but begin with the ones enabled on your system instead of disabling unrelated services. If the game becomes stable, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify the conflict.
Do not run two PC launchers during isolation
Bethesda’s advanced Starfield procedure advises against running the Steam and Xbox PC applications simultaneously during troubleshooting. Close the launcher you are not using, end its background processes if they remain active, and test from a single installation path.
Remove mods temporarily
Move or disable every mod, including texture packs, script extenders, reshades, and configuration loaders, and then start an unmodified session. Bethesda warns that a game update can make previously compatible mods unstable. Keep a backup of your saves before changing a modded installation, and do not overwrite a clean test save with a mod-dependent save.
Clear custom launch options
Remove custom Steam launch options and any forced graphics or API flags when a crash began after experimenting with them. A launch option can change the rendering path before the game reaches its settings menu, so a normal in-game reset will not undo it. Reintroduce options individually only after an unmodified launch succeeds.

Step 4: Reduce the settings that affect frame-time stability
First reset the game’s auto-detected graphics profile. Then lower one group of settings, test a repeatable route, and keep the change only if frame delivery improves. Average frames per second can look acceptable while a single expensive effect causes visible pauses; the goal is consistent frame time, not simply a higher headline number.
| Setting group | Why it can cause stutter or crashes | Practical test |
|---|---|---|
| Volumetric lighting and godrays | These effects can require substantial GPU work, especially outdoors, in weather, or around bright light sources. | Lower the quality one step and revisit the same outdoor area. |
| Shadows | High-quality dynamic shadows increase rendering work across many objects and light sources. | Reduce shadow quality before lowering every other option. |
| Decals | Large numbers of surface marks can increase scene complexity and memory activity. | Lower decals and test a busy combat or settlement location. |
| Screen-space reflections | Reflections add per-pixel calculations and can become expensive near water, glass, or polished surfaces. | Reduce or disable them temporarily to compare frame delivery. |
| Ambient occlusion | This shading pass adds work across much of the scene and can amplify dips in dense areas. | Lower it one level while leaving texture quality unchanged. |
| View distance and distant-object detail | Longer visibility keeps more geometry and objects active, increasing CPU, GPU, and streaming demand. | Reduce distance-related settings when traversal causes pauses. |
| Fade distance | Higher values keep detail visible farther away and can increase the number of assets that must be processed. | Lower it for a controlled test in an open landscape. |
| Anti-aliasing | Some anti-aliasing methods add a significant GPU pass or interact badly with a particular driver. | Try the next lower mode, then compare edges and frame pacing. |
Bethesda identifies these settings in its Skyrim crash and performance guidance. Do not lower every option at once: the resulting image-quality loss may be large, while the original cause remains unknown. If only one setting changes the behavior, you have a useful workaround and a clear report for the developer.
Step 5: Fix long loading times with storage and streaming checks
HDD versus SSD
| Storage | Read-latency behavior | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Hard disk drive | Mechanical seek time is high and varies with file location and concurrent activity. | Longer, less consistent loads and a greater chance of visible streaming pauses when the game requests many small assets. |
| SATA SSD | Much lower access latency than an HDD. | More consistent loading and streaming, subject to the drive’s condition and interface. |
| NVMe SSD | Very low latency and high throughput when the motherboard and slot support it. | A strong choice for large open-world installations, but it cannot compensate for insufficient CPU, GPU, memory, or a corrupted installation. |
If your RPG is on an HDD and long loads are the main complaint, moving it to an SSD is the highest-value hardware change to test. A 2TB NVMe SSD is a sensible capacity class for several large RPGs only when your system has a compatible M.2 slot, the correct interface, and enough free space; verify those constraints before buying. The exact improvement depends on the game’s asset layout and the rest of the computer.
Move an installation without creating a second broken copy
- Back up saves and note the current installation folder.
- Use the launcher’s installed-files or storage-management command to move the game to the SSD rather than dragging folders manually.
- Allow the launcher to detect and validate the new location.
- Run one clean launch before restoring mods or custom launch options.
After a move, the first launch can still be slow while shaders and caches are rebuilt. Compare a second launch and the same in-game route before deciding whether storage solved the problem.
Step 6: Repair game files and shader data
Verify the installation
In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. The launcher compares local files with its manifest and replaces files that are missing or corrupted. Use the equivalent repair or verification command in the Xbox app when that is where the game is installed. Wait for the operation to finish before starting the game, and do not assume that a successful verification proves a modded setup is supported.

Clear damaged shader data carefully
Capcom advises deleting game or driver shader-cache files when damaged shader data may be producing graphical problems. Use the cache location or clearing control documented for your game and driver; do not delete save folders or arbitrary system files. Shader caches are disposable, but the game must recreate them.
Expect the first launch after clearing a cache to take longer and to stutter briefly while shaders compile. Let the game reach the main menu and, if applicable, revisit the areas that normally trigger the issue. Judge the result after the rebuild has completed, not during the first few minutes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Isolate crashes that survive basic fixes
Determine whether the save or the installation is responsible
Try a new game or an earlier, known-good save with mods still disabled. If only one save crashes, the problem may be tied to an asset, script, or state recorded in that save. If every save and a new game fail at the same point, concentrate on files, drivers, launchers, and the graphics API instead of repeatedly loading the damaged save.
Reset the launcher only after preserving your data
Back up saves and configuration files, then reset or reinstall the launcher if it fails to authenticate, validate, or start the game correctly. A launcher reset is a higher-effort step than verification and may remove local settings. Test the unmodified game before restoring custom profiles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest with a new Windows user profile
Bethesda’s advanced Starfield procedure includes testing under a new Windows profile. This separates a game failure from permissions, per-user configuration, overlay hooks, and corrupted profile data. Create the temporary profile, install or point the launcher at the existing game as supported, and test without importing the old profile’s settings. A successful test identifies the original Windows profile as the next area to repair.

Change one graphics API or launch variable at a time
If the game supports more than one graphics API, test the documented alternative only after removing custom launch options. Record which API, driver version, save, and location were used. Do not treat a workaround that starts the game as proof that the underlying driver or file problem is fixed.
Step 8: Recognize a computer-level failure
Stop treating the issue as a graphics-setting problem if gameplay stutters and the computer then blue-screens, forcibly restarts, or powers off. Steam says overheating is especially likely when games or applications slow down or stutter before the error. Continuing to stress an overheating machine can damage hardware or corrupt files.
- Stop testing until the system has cooled.
- Check that fans and vents are unobstructed and that cooling hardware is operating normally.
- Inspect hardware health and temperatures with the diagnostic tools supplied for your computer or components.
- Test whether other demanding applications produce the same failure; a fault across several programs is not a game-only issue.
- Collect a DxDiag report and the game’s crash reports before contacting the game developer, GPU manufacturer, or system vendor.
Capcom specifically recommends collecting DxDiag and crash reports when shader or graphical troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Include the exact game edition, launcher, driver version, Windows profile used, whether mods were disabled, and the step that reproduces the failure. Do not continue stress-testing a machine that is shutting down.
Targeted playbooks for common cases
The game stutters only while exploring
- Confirm the installation is on an SSD and close programs that read or write to the same drive.
- Disable overlays and mods, then test a repeatable route.
- Lower view distance, distant-object detail, fade distance, volumetric lighting, and shadows one group at a time.
- Update the GPU driver and clear shader data if the problem began after a driver or game update.
A crash occurs when loading one save
- Back up the save and launch without mods or custom launch options.
- Verify game files and test an earlier save or a new game.
- If other saves work, treat the affected save as the boundary of the problem and avoid overwriting the working backup.
- If all saves fail, continue with the clean driver, launcher, and new-profile tests.
Loading screens are unusually long
- Check whether the game is installed on an HDD and whether another process is using the disk.
- Move the installation to a compatible SSD using the launcher’s storage tool.
- Verify files and allow shader caches to rebuild fully after a cache clear.
- Compare the second launch and the same save; a first launch after repair is not a fair speed test.
Stutter is followed by a restart or shutdown
- Stop the game and let the computer cool.
- Check cooling, temperatures, and hardware health.
- Test another demanding application only after the system is safe to operate.
- Provide DxDiag and crash reports to the appropriate vendor instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.
When to choose a hardware upgrade instead of another settings change
Use software changes when the game is installed on an SSD, the system meets requirements, and the symptom began after a driver, mod, cache, or launcher change. Consider an upgrade when the machine consistently falls below the title’s minimum requirements, storage is still an HDD, or the available drive cannot hold the game and its working data comfortably.
| Choice | Best fit | Cost or compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Lower expensive graphics settings | You need an immediate, reversible improvement and can accept reduced visual quality. | No hardware cost, but image quality and view distance may decrease. |
| Move the game to an SSD | Loads and streaming are the main issue and the current installation is on an HDD. | Requires a compatible drive and enough capacity; it will not fix a bad driver or overheating. |
| Upgrade broader hardware | The machine does not meet the title’s requirements or fails across several demanding applications. | Higher cost and possible compatibility work; identify the limiting component first. |
A final evidence checklist before requesting support
- Game title, edition, launcher, and installed location.
- CPU, GPU, system memory, operating system, and driver version.
- Whether the game is on an HDD, SATA SSD, or NVMe SSD, with available free space.
- The exact symptom, reproduction route, affected save, and whether a new game works.
- Confirmation that overlays, mods, and custom launch options were disabled for the test.
- Which files were verified, whether shader data was cleared, and whether the first post-clear launch was allowed to rebuild.
- DxDiag output, crash reports, and any blue-screen or forced-restart information.
This record prevents support from sending you through the same checks repeatedly and makes it possible to distinguish a game defect from a driver, launcher, profile, storage, or hardware problem.
