Start with the game’s supported path: update The Callisto Protocol, let its shader-compilation process finish whenever the game displays it, compare your hardware with the published PC tiers, then test ray-tracing settings one change at a time. Why shader compilation can cause stutter
The Callisto Protocol builds and uses shader programs for effects such as materials, lighting, shadows and ray tracing. On PC, work can occur when the game first encounters an effect or when a graphics option changes. A brief hitch during that work is different from a sustained low frame rate caused by a system that is below the game’s performance requirements.

The launch-era PC build used a pipeline-state-object (PSO) cache intended to reduce repeated shader work. Striking Distance Studios’ December 2, 2022 PC v1.01 note says: “Updated PSO cache to further reduce stuttering during gameplay.” The official patch record later documents additional performance and ray-tracing fixes, but it does not say that every current stutter has one cause or that a particular setting fixes every computer.
Version 1.02, released December 6, 2022, added two useful indicators: a progress dialog in the main menu while shaders compile and a popup when changing ray-tracing settings triggers compilation. Those indicators tell you that the game is doing explicit preparation; they are not a measured promise that gameplay will become smooth on completion.

Use this troubleshooting order
1. Finish updating through your store client
Before changing settings, allow Steam or Epic Games Store to finish downloading and applying the game’s updates. The patch history contains PC-specific work, including PSO-cache changes, general optimizations and ray-tracing crash fixes. A client that is still patching, validating or waiting for a restart can leave you testing an older build.
- Open the client where you own the game.
- Check the game’s download or update queue and wait until it reports completion.
- Launch the game normally rather than using an old executable shortcut.
- If the client offers file verification, use it only after the update has completed and the problem still occurs; record any files it reacquires.
The historical notes are evidence that the game changed over time, not a guarantee that the latest build eliminates all stutter. Record the build number and the date you tested it so support can distinguish an update-related change from a hardware or settings issue.
2. Let the game’s own shader process finish
When the main menu shows the documented shader-compilation progress dialog, leave the game open until the indicated operation completes. If changing a ray-tracing option produces the compilation popup, avoid repeatedly toggling settings while that work is in progress. Interrupting the process makes it harder to tell whether a later hitch is first-use compilation or an ongoing performance problem.
After compilation finishes, load the same area and repeat the same movement or camera path. Use a repeatable test: for example, enter the level, walk through the section where the hitch occurred, and note whether the pause happens at the same effect or location. The official notes do not provide a universal duration, frame-rate target or guarantee of smoother play, so judge the result against your own repeatable observation rather than an assumed time limit.
3. Compare your PC with the published tiers
Check the CPU model, GPU model and VRAM, system memory and free storage. KRAFTON’s June 26, 2023 requirements article lists four tiers. Steam publishes a separate minimum/recommended listing; do not merge one list’s labels with the other’s values.

Read the complete KRAFTON requirements article for the tier definitions. Steam’s store listing identifies Windows 10/11, 75 GB of storage, 8 GB RAM with a GTX 1060 or RX 580 at minimum, and 16 GB RAM with a GTX 1070 or RX 5700 for its recommended tier. Steam marks an SSD as recommended.

An SSD can reduce general loading latency, but neither Steam nor KRAFTON states that buying or moving to an SSD cures shader stutter. Treat the SSD entry as a specification recommendation, not as a guaranteed remedy. Also leave practical free space beyond the nominal 75 GB so the store client and Windows can update files without failing for lack of room.

4. Check ray-tracing compatibility and settings
KRAFTON says PC ray tracing is supported when the system supports DirectX 12. Its technical description also says the PC release does not support DLSS. Do not look for a DLSS toggle or treat its absence as a missing driver feature.
Because the v1.02 notes say that changing ray-tracing settings can trigger shader compilation, change one option at a time and wait for any compilation indicator to finish before evaluating the result. Keep a short record of the original value, the new value, and the area tested. This isolates whether a particular ray-traced effect coincides with the hitch without assuming that DX11, DX12 or one launch argument is best for every PC.
- Confirm that your graphics card and installed Windows configuration support the DirectX 12 path required for ray tracing.
- If ray tracing is enabled, test with a single supported option changed rather than switching several effects together.
- Repeat the same scene after the shader dialog completes.
- If the game crashes when a ray-tracing option is changed, note the exact option and menu location for your support report.
The official material reviewed does not prescribe launch arguments, configuration-file edits or a forced API switch as fixes. Avoid presenting those changes as developer-supported solutions.
5. Separate a one-time compile hitch from a repeatable fault
Use the symptom’s timing to decide what to document. A hitch that occurs once when a new effect appears, alongside the game’s compilation message, is consistent with shader preparation. A hitch that repeats at the same location after the dialog has completed, or a crash that occurs whenever a setting is changed, deserves a diagnostic report.

How to test without creating a misleading result
Change only one variable between runs. If you alter resolution, several quality settings and ray tracing together, a better or worse result cannot be attributed to any one change. Start from a recorded baseline, use the same save and route, and wait for every displayed compilation task to finish before comparing behavior.

Do not judge the game from a single turn of the camera immediately after changing a setting. The first encounter with a material, shadow or lighting effect can be the moment the shader is prepared. Repeat the route after the menu progress indicator has completed. Engine and feature limits you should account for
KRAFTON describes the game as using a heavily modified Unreal Engine 4.27 version with some Unreal Engine 5 features, plus custom Striking Distance Studios lighting and rendering technology. That description explains why generic advice for another Unreal game may not map directly to this title.

If your hardware is below the Low tier, the sensible conclusion is that the game may require reduced settings or may not deliver the desired performance. If it meets or exceeds a tier and the same hitch remains after the documented compilation step, preserve your evidence rather than assuming a purchase is required.
