First determine whether the game is actually rendering fewer frames or whether network lag is making movement feel choppy. If the FPS counter drops with the hitch, investigate the PC and game; if characters rubber-band, attacks fail to register, or the server responds late, check the connection. Both problems can happen at once. Work through measurements and reversible fixes before considering hardware replacement.
Tell frame-rate stutter from network lag
Rendering problems affect the image: motion becomes visibly choppy and the FPS counter may fall. Network trouble more often looks like characters teleporting or snapping back, delayed reactions, hits that do not register, or disconnects. These clues are not conclusive on their own, and an online game can suffer from both local performance problems and connectivity trouble.

Nexon America Support’s Connection and Performance Assessment advises checking ping and packet loss when the problem occurs. Its guidance explains: “Higher ping is worse, the higher it is, the more lag you’ll feel.” A game server may not respond to the final ping hop, so readings from intermediate points can still help indicate whether trouble lies earlier on the network path.

Use the game’s FPS display or a hardware monitor you already trust. Record readings while the problem is happening, not just when the game is running smoothly. Note whether it occurs in a crowded area, after entering a new region, or during combat; that context can help support staff reproduce or investigate it.

- FPS, CPU load and temperature, memory use, and GPU load and temperature.
- For network-like symptoms, ping and packet loss during the same event.
- Whether downloads, updates, or other high-bandwidth activity are running.
Nexon’s assessment recommends looking at CPU, RAM, GPU, and FPS together. A maxed CPU or GPU, nearly full memory, or temperatures beyond the component manufacturer’s recommendations are clues about what to investigate—not proof that a component needs replacing. Use the manufacturer’s temperature guidance rather than a universal threshold; the support material does not establish one.
Try reversible performance fixes
Change one thing at a time, then retest in a comparable situation. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped. Official support instructions for New World and Lost Ark provide examples of these checks, but their menus and controls are not universal across MMORPGs.

- Reduce demanding graphics settings. If performance is poor, lower settings and compare the result. View distance and shadows are examples to test: Bohemia Interactive’s Arma Reforger guidance calls out those settings for that game. Do not assume they are the main cause in another title.
- Close background work. Exit unnecessary applications and pause downloads or updates while testing. New World Support notes that background programs and drive-writing tasks can affect performance.
- Test another display mode. If the game offers them, compare full-screen with windowed or borderless mode. New World Support lists switching display mode as a troubleshooting step.
- Check power settings. On Windows, inspect the active power profile; a lower-performance setting can limit performance. Laptops may also have manufacturer-specific power controls. New World and Lost Ark support both discuss power settings.
- Check drivers and game files. Look for current graphics drivers from your GPU vendor, and use the launcher or platform’s file-verification option if available. New World and Lost Ark support list these among their troubleshooting steps.
- Investigate heat when readings point that way. If temperatures exceed the manufacturer’s recommendations or performance changes as the system heats up, consult the PC or component maker’s guidance. Avoid dismantling a laptop or changing voltage settings based only on a general stutter symptom.
These steps are tests, not guaranteed FPS boosts; the cited support guidance does not publish a universal expected gain.

When rubber-banding, delayed server responses, failed hits, disconnects, or ping and packet-loss spikes coincide, reduce other network activity and check the connection while the problem is occurring. Ethernet is a way to remove Wi-Fi signal or interference as a variable; it is not a general fix for low rendered FPS. If the image remains choppy and the FPS counter falls while the connection looks stable, return to local performance checks.

Some game-specific shader work can cause stuttering, but the timing and remedy depend on the title. Square Enix Support Center’s guidance for Star Ocean: The Divine Force describes shader-cache creation after initial play and an in-game “Compile Shader” option. For that game, it says compilation may take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications; the page does not state a year. That duration and menu option should not be applied to other MMORPGs. Check your own game’s current official support instructions before waiting for compilation, clearing a cache, or changing driver settings.
