A Nintendo DS emulator can look wrong for three different reasons: the image is being stretched, the two DS screens are arranged badly, or the whole display is rotated. Fix the setting that matches the symptom. On DeSmuME for Windows, enable View > Force Maintain Ratio for distorted proportions; use View > LCDs Layout for screen placement; and use View > Rotation when the picture is sideways or upside down. melonDS and its Libretro core use separate layout and rotation controls, so changing one does not necessarily correct the other.
Identify what is actually wrong
“Stretched” and “misaligned” describe different display problems. Aspect-ratio correction changes the geometry of each screen. Layout controls where the top and bottom LCD images appear relative to one another. Rotation turns the rendered image. Changing the wrong category can leave the original problem untouched.

| What you see | Setting category | Documented example |
|---|---|---|
| The picture becomes too wide or too tall when the window is resized | Maintain aspect ratio | DeSmuME for Windows: View > Force Maintain Ratio |
| Both screens are cramped or stacked awkwardly on a widescreen monitor | Screen layout | DeSmuME: horizontal layout |
| You want to use only one DS display | Single-screen mode and screen selection | DeSmuME: One LCD, then Top First or Bottom First |
| The image is sideways or upside down | Rotation or a rotated layout | DeSmuME rotation; melonDS DS core layout options |
| The proportions change after switching layouts in a frontend | Core/frontend aspect-ratio behavior | Libretro melonDS DS core |
Start with this diagnosis instead of changing several options at once. It gives you a known baseline and makes it clear which setting produced an improvement. If the window itself is wider but circles, text, and character sprites still look normal, the apparent problem may be layout rather than distortion. If every object is uniformly wide or tall, treat it as an aspect-ratio issue first.
Fix stretched proportions in DeSmuME for Windows
DeSmuME’s Windows manual identifies Force Maintain Ratio as the control for preserving the correct shape while the window is resized. The documented path is:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Open DeSmuME.
- Choose View > Force Maintain Ratio.
- Resize the emulator with View > Window size or by dragging a window edge.
The manual describes the option this way: “This option forces the window to maintain a correct ratio so it looks correct.” The important order is to enable ratio preservation before resizing. If you resize first and then enable the option, resize again so the window applies the corrected geometry.
Do not judge the result from the outside dimensions of a widescreen window alone. A correct-ratio emulator may leave unused space on one side or above and below the screens instead of filling every pixel. That empty space is preferable to changing the shape of the game image. Once the ratio is locked, adjust the window size or layout to use the available area without pulling the edges independently.
Use window-size presets for predictable scaling
The same DeSmuME manual lists window-size presets of 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x. These values change the scale of the emulator window; they do not replace the ratio-preservation setting. If the image is already distorted, selecting a larger or smaller preset alone may simply produce a larger or smaller distorted image. Keep Force Maintain Ratio enabled, then select the preset that fits your monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDragging an edge gives you a custom size, while the presets provide repeatable sizes when you want to return to a known scale. A preset is therefore a sizing choice, not an aspect-ratio repair. If a preset appears to fix the image, confirm that ratio preservation is still enabled; otherwise a later manual resize can reintroduce the distortion.
Arrange both DeSmuME screens on a widescreen monitor
The Nintendo DS has two displays, and a vertically stacked arrangement can leave large unused areas on a wide monitor. DeSmuME for Windows provides a horizontal arrangement for this situation.
- Open View > LCDs Layout.
- Select Horizontal.
- Resize the window after selecting the layout, keeping Force Maintain Ratio enabled if you also need undistorted screens.
Horizontal layout changes the relationship between the two LCD images; it is not a substitute for aspect-ratio preservation. If each LCD still looks too wide or too tall, return to the ratio control rather than trying another layout.
Choose the arrangement based on what must be visible at the same time. A horizontal pair can make better use of a wide monitor, while a stacked arrangement may be easier to follow when the game expects the lower screen directly beneath the upper one. The setting changes placement, not the game’s touch input or which screen is logically the top or bottom display.

Some games, menus, or tasks do not require both displays at the same time. DeSmuME’s Windows FAQ documents a one-screen mode:
- Choose View > LCDs Layout > One LCD.
- Select Top First or Bottom First, depending on which DS display you need.
Top First and Bottom First select which LCD is shown. They do not rotate the image and do not correct a stretched window, so keep those problems separate when troubleshooting. If the wrong game information appears, switch between Top First and Bottom First rather than changing the scale or rotation.

The Windows paths above are not universal menu names. The DeSmuME FAQ documents different names for Mac, and other ports can reorganize the same features. Use the equivalent LCD or layout control for your platform rather than assuming that a Windows path exists unchanged.
Correct sideways or upside-down DeSmuME output
When the content is sideways or inverted, use rotation instead of changing the window size or layout. DeSmuME’s Windows manual lists four rotation choices under View > Rotation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- 0 degrees — the normal orientation
- 90 degrees — quarter-turn clockwise orientation
- 180 degrees — upside-down orientation
- 270 degrees — quarter-turn in the opposite direction
Select the angle that makes the game image upright. Rotation changes orientation; it does not preserve proportions by itself. If the corrected image is upright but still looks stretched, enable Force Maintain Ratio as a separate step.
A rotation can also change the shape of the overall emulator output. Recheck the window after selecting an angle and apply the ratio setting again if necessary. Do not use 90 or 270 degrees merely to make two screens fit side by side: that is a placement decision and is better handled with LCD layout controls.
Adjust screen layout in melonDS
melonDS treats layout and rotation as separate display decisions. Its FAQ describes Natural as the arrangement that stacks the screens like a real Nintendo DS. Other choices can align the screens horizontally or vertically, and those alignment choices are independent of rotation.
Choose a layout first
Open the display or screen-layout controls in your melonDS build and select the arrangement that matches your monitor and the way you use the two screens. Choose Natural when you want the familiar stacked DS arrangement. Choose a horizontal or other available alignment when the stacked view wastes space or makes the two displays difficult to watch together.
Layout names describe the relationship between the LCDs, not necessarily the orientation of the artwork inside each LCD. If the screens are in a useful position but their contents are turned, leave the layout in place and change rotation separately.
Apply rotation separately
If a layout is positioned correctly but the contents are sideways, use the rotation control rather than switching between horizontal and vertical arrangements. Conversely, rotating the image will not move the two screens into a more useful relationship. Keeping those decisions separate prevents a layout change from masking an orientation problem.
Exact labels can differ between desktop builds and ports. If you do not see the wording used in the FAQ, inspect the emulator’s display, screen, layout, orientation, or rotation section for the corresponding choice.

Use the Libretro melonDS DS core
The Libretro melonDS DS core exposes screen layouts through core options. Configure the layouts you want, then use the frontend’s Next Screen Layout control to cycle through the configured choices while running a game.

- Configure the available screen layouts, including any layout that rotates the screens sideways if that is appropriate for your display.
- Start the content and invoke Next Screen Layout to move through the configured layouts.
- After selecting a layout, check the frontend’s aspect-ratio behavior before judging whether the image is stretched.
The core documentation states that its provided output aspect ratio depends on both the selected screen layout and the renderer. Consequently, a change in proportions after switching layouts can be expected behavior rather than a new fault. Check the layout and renderer combination before trying to compensate by arbitrarily widening the frontend window.
A layout that includes sideways rotation can solve an orientation requirement in the core itself. If the image is upright but geometrically distorted, investigate the frontend or renderer’s aspect-ratio setting separately. The frontend may offer its own scaling or aspect-ratio choices, so a core layout change should be evaluated after the frontend has applied its output settings.
When your menus do not match these paths
Emulator ports, versions, and frontends do not share one universal menu structure. A Windows DeSmuME instruction should not be presented as a Mac instruction, and a standalone melonDS control should not be assumed to exist in its Libretro core.
Identify the emulator and platform first. Then look for controls named display, LCD, screen layout, scaling, window size, rotation, or aspect ratio. Make one change at a time and observe which symptom changes. If the installed build lacks a named option, it may expose the same function under a different label or through the frontend rather than the emulator core.
Do not rely on a detailed Android menu path unless it is documented for the exact version you installed. The available material does not establish a current official path for every Android DS emulator, so the safe procedure is to use that emulator’s own display and layout documentation. The same caution applies to handheld ports and custom frontends: identify whether a setting belongs to the core, the emulator window, or the frontend before changing it.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use this order when several symptoms appear at once:
- Describe the symptom precisely. Decide whether the image is geometrically distorted, the screens are arranged inconveniently, or the content is rotated.
- Correct orientation first when necessary. An upside-down image is easier to evaluate after it is upright.
- Choose the screen arrangement. Select stacked, horizontal, vertical, or one-screen mode according to the task and monitor shape.
- Preserve the image ratio. In DeSmuME for Windows, enable View > Force Maintain Ratio before resizing. In a Libretro setup, account for the selected layout and renderer when judging the output shape.
- Set the scale. Use the documented DeSmuME presets—1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, or 4x—or resize manually after the previous corrections are active.
- Recheck after every change. If a layout change alters the proportions in the Libretro melonDS DS core, verify the core-provided aspect-ratio behavior instead of assuming the emulator is broken.
This sequence prevents a screen-layout choice from being mistaken for an aspect-ratio fix and makes it easier to undo only the setting that caused an unwanted result. If you need to compare layouts, keep the same scale and renderer while testing so that only one variable changes at a time.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Changing only the scale preset
A 2x or 4x window can still be distorted if ratio preservation is disabled. Enable the ratio option, then choose the scale.

Using rotation to solve a cramped two-screen layout
Rotation turns the image; it does not decide whether the LCDs are stacked or side by side. Select a horizontal or one-screen layout for placement problems.
Assuming a horizontal layout must be stretched
Horizontal placement changes the overall output shape. In the Libretro melonDS DS core, the documented aspect ratio can depend on the layout and renderer, so evaluate that combination rather than treating every ratio change as an error.
Applying Windows instructions to another port
Menu names and locations vary. Use the documented Windows path only in DeSmuME for Windows; elsewhere, find the matching display or layout control in that build.
Expecting one-screen mode to choose the correct LCD automatically
DeSmuME’s one-screen mode requires a second choice: Top First or Bottom First. Select the display that contains the information you need.

Changing several controls before checking the result
If you change rotation, layout, renderer, and window size together, it becomes difficult to know which option helped. Return to a recognizable layout, alter one category, and check the image before proceeding to the next category.
Forcing the window to fill every widescreen pixel
Filling the entire monitor can require unequal horizontal and vertical scaling. Use a maintained ratio and accept unused space when necessary; a smaller correct image is preferable to a uniformly distorted one.

| Goal | Recommended setting sequence | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Fill a wide monitor without distorting each screen | Choose horizontal LCD layout, enable ratio preservation, then resize | Screen relationship first; individual screen geometry second |
| Play using only the upper or lower display | Choose One LCD, then Top First or Bottom First | Removes the unused LCD and selects the visible one |
| Make sideways content readable | Choose the appropriate rotation angle or a rotated core layout | Turns the rendered image without deciding its scale |
| Return to a familiar DS presentation | Use Natural in melonDS where available | Stacks screens like the original handheld |
| Cycle layouts during a Libretro session | Configure core layouts, then use Next Screen Layout | Switches among the layouts exposed by the core |
Once the correct category is selected—ratio, layout, or rotation—the fix is usually a single documented display setting followed by a resize or layout selection. Hardware changes are not required to correct a software aspect-ratio or screen-arrangement setting.
Quick checks before and after changing settings
- Confirm the emulator name and platform before following a menu path.
- Record the current layout, rotation, renderer, and window size so you can return to the prior view.
- Test with a screen containing familiar text or geometric shapes; uneven letterforms or visibly wide circles indicate distortion.
- After changing layout, resize only after the new arrangement is active.
- In DeSmuME Windows, verify that Force Maintain Ratio remains enabled after selecting a preset or dragging the edge.
- In Libretro, reassess proportions after every layout cycle because the core-provided aspect ratio can vary with layout and renderer.
These checks distinguish a display-setting problem from a game-specific screen choice. They also make it clear whether an option changed the image itself, the relationship between the two LCDs, or only the amount of window space used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my DS emulator look stretched when I resize the window?
The window is being resized without preserving the display ratio. In DeSmuME for Windows, enable View > Force Maintain Ratio, then resize with View > Window size or by dragging an edge. The 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x choices change scale but do not replace ratio preservation.
Best Value
How do I put the two DeSmuME screens side by side?
On DeSmuME for Windows, choose View > LCDs Layout > Horizontal. Resize afterward, and keep Force Maintain Ratio enabled if the individual screens look too wide or tall.
How can I display only the top or bottom DS screen?
Choose View > LCDs Layout > One LCD, then select Top First or Bottom First. One-screen mode changes which LCD is visible; it does not fix rotation or aspect ratio.
What should I do if the DeSmuME image is upside down or sideways?
Use View > Rotation and choose 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees. Rotation corrects orientation, while Force Maintain Ratio separately corrects proportions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What does Natural mean in melonDS?
The melonDS FAQ describes Natural as the layout that stacks the screens like a real Nintendo DS. Other layouts can align them horizontally or vertically, independently of rotation.
Why does the picture’s shape change when I switch layouts in the Libretro melonDS DS core?
The core’s provided output aspect ratio depends on the selected screen layout and renderer. A proportion change after cycling layouts with Next Screen Layout can therefore be expected. Check the layout-and-renderer combination before compensating by widening the frontend window.
Can I use a Windows DeSmuME menu path on Mac, Android, or another port?
Not reliably. Menu names vary by platform, emulator version, port, and frontend. Look for equivalent display, LCD, layout, scaling, rotation, or aspect-ratio controls in the documentation for the exact build.
Do I need a special monitor or other hardware to fix a stretched DS emulator?
No. The documented fixes are emulator and frontend settings: ratio preservation, window size, screen layout, screen selection, and rotation. Hardware is not required to correct these software display problems.
The Bottom Line
First decide whether the fault is proportion, placement, or orientation. In DeSmuME for Windows, use View > Force Maintain Ratio for stretching, View > LCDs Layout for stacked, horizontal, or one-screen views, and View > Rotation for sideways or inverted output. In melonDS, keep layout and rotation separate; in the Libretro melonDS DS core, remember that layout and renderer affect the provided aspect ratio. Apply one change at a time, then resize and recheck.
