1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStop error 0x000000D5 means DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL: a kernel-mode driver tried to read or write memory after that memory had been freed. The number alone does not identify the vendor. Capture the crash evidence, analyze a Windows dump in WinDbg, then update, roll back, or temporarily disable the driver named by the dump. Use Driver Verifier only against a small, justified set of suspects, because it can deliberately expose more crashes and can make Windows difficult to boot.
What 0x000000D5 means
Microsoft defines bug check 0x000000D5 as DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL. In plain language, a driver referenced an allocation after Windows had already freed it. The defect is normally in kernel-mode code, where a bad pointer can stop the entire operating system rather than merely close one application.

Special Pool is a Driver Verifier check that places driver allocations in protected memory arrangements. It can catch an overrun, underrun, or access-after-free close to the moment it occurs. That is why this stop code is often seen while Verifier is active, although a driver defect can also surface during ordinary operation.
| Parameter | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 1 | The memory address that was referenced. |
| 2 | Whether the operation was a read or a write. |
| 3 | The address that referenced the memory, when Windows could determine it. |
| 4 | A reserved value. |
Those four values help a debugger understand the failure, but they are not a vendor diagnosis. The stop screen’s .sys name, the failing stack, and the dump analysis provide the evidence needed to choose a repair.

What usually causes the stop code
The immediate cause is a driver use-after-free error. The driver may belong to a graphics adapter, storage controller, network device, audio stack, security filter, virtual-machine component, USB device, or another kernel-integrated product. The code does not prove that a particular class of hardware is defective.
Microsoft’s broad troubleshooting estimates attribute about 70% of stop errors to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to cases in which memory corruption prevents a useful analysis. A separate Microsoft estimate puts about 75% of all stop errors down to faulty drivers. These are general estimates, not a measured probability for your individual 0x000000D5 incident, and they should not replace dump evidence.
- A driver update, Windows update, firmware change, or new device can introduce an incompatible build.
- A recent rollback or partial uninstall can leave an old filter driver loading with newer components.
- Driver Verifier can expose a latent lifetime bug by stressing allocations and checking Special Pool.
- Hardware instability can corrupt memory and make a driver appear responsible, so an unreadable or contradictory dump deserves further testing rather than an immediate replacement purchase.
Record evidence before changing drivers
Do this while the symptoms are fresh. Reinstalling several drivers at once destroys the information that would tell you which change mattered.
- Photograph the blue-screen screen, including the hexadecimal code and any displayed driver filename.
- Write down the date, what you were doing, and whether the crash followed a Windows update, driver installation, firmware flash, new peripheral, sleep/wake cycle, game launch, or virtualization task.
- Note whether the same device is involved each time. A repeatable crash when a particular adapter connects is more useful than a one-off filename on a heavily corrupted screen.
- If Windows still starts, avoid running stress tools or repeatedly forcing shutdowns until a dump has been retained.
Make Windows keep a crash dump
A dump gives you stronger evidence than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated hardware. Configure it before the next crash, or verify that the existing setting is still enabled.
- Press
Windows, search for View advanced system settings, and open it. - On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, select Settings.
- Under System failure, leave Write an event to the system log enabled. In Write debugging information, choose Automatic memory dump or Small memory dump.
- Confirm the dump path. Small dumps are saved in
%SystemRoot%Minidump. Kernel, complete, and automatic dumps use%SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP. - Apply the changes and leave enough free space on the Windows volume for the selected dump type. Do not delete the newest dump until you have copied it for analysis.
If no dump appears after a crash, check that the page file is managed on the boot volume, that the system can write to the selected path, and that cleanup software has not removed the file. These checks explain a missing artifact; they do not identify the driver by themselves.

Analyze the dump in WinDbg
WinDbg is Microsoft’s debugger for examining Windows crash dumps. Open the newest dump rather than an older file from a different incident.
- Start WinDbg with an account allowed to read the dump, then choose File and Open dump file.
- Open the file from
%SystemRoot%Minidumpor%SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP. - Wait for symbols and initial processing to finish. In the command window, run
!analyze -v. - Read the bug-check name, the reported module, the probable cause, and the four parameters. Treat a module listed as “probably caused by” as a lead, not proof.
- Inspect the stack for the sequence of drivers involved. A third-party module that recurs across multiple dumps is stronger evidence than a one-time system component at the top of a corrupted stack.
- When Driver Verifier has been used, run
!verifierto inspect its statistics and the drivers under verification.
Save the analysis text and the original dump before making a change. If symbols are incomplete or the stack is badly damaged, keep that limitation in your notes. A dump that cannot reliably name a module is a reason to gather another controlled crash, not a reason to blame whichever device was most recently purchased.
Choose the repair for the named driver
Install the computer or device maker’s compatible package
Use the support page for the computer manufacturer or the specific device manufacturer, and select a package that matches your Windows edition and architecture. Prefer a complete, supported package over a random copy of a similarly named .sys file. Reboot after installation and check whether the same action still produces 0x000000D5.
Roll back an update that introduced the crash
If the first crash followed a driver update, return to the last known-good version rather than repeatedly installing the same build. In Device Manager, open the affected device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when Windows offers it. If the button is unavailable, obtain the previous supported package from the device or computer maker and install it according to that maker’s instructions.
Temporarily disable a suspicious filter or service
A third-party filter, virtual-device component, or security-related driver may be loaded even when its main application is not open. If the dump consistently names one, disable its associated device, service, or application long enough to confirm the relationship. Keep the change reversible, record what you disabled, and replace the component with a supported build instead of leaving essential protection or connectivity permanently disabled.

Undo a related hardware or firmware change
If the failure began immediately after adding a device or flashing firmware, disconnect the new device when practical and return firmware to the manufacturer’s last known-good release. Do not update several unrelated devices in one session: you need a clear before-and-after result.

Use Driver Verifier as a targeted diagnostic
Driver Verifier is not a general “repair” button. It consumes substantial CPU, can slow Windows, and can intentionally trigger a bug check when it catches a violation. Its value is evidence: it can make a suspect driver’s Special Pool defect reproducible.
Prepare a recovery path
- Back up important files before enabling verification.
- Know how to reach Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode.
- Have the suspect driver’s name from the dump or a repeatable symptom; do not select every driver simply because the list is long.
Enable checks for only the suspect
- Sign in with administrative rights and run
verifierfrom the Start menu or Run dialog. - Choose Create standard settings, then choose Select driver names from a list.
- Select one suspicious third-party driver, or a small group that belongs to the same device and cannot reasonably be separated.
- Finish the wizard and restart. Reproduce the normal action that has caused the crash, if it is safe to do so.
- After a new dump, open it in WinDbg and compare the named module, stack, bug-check parameters, and
!verifieroutput with the earlier evidence.
Do not verify every driver at once. A system-wide selection increases slowdown and crash risk while making the result harder to interpret. If the suspect does not reproduce the fault, turn Verifier off and investigate the next evidence-based candidate rather than leaving a broad stress configuration enabled indefinitely.
Turn Verifier off after the test
Open verifier again and choose the option to delete existing settings, then restart. From an elevated command prompt, verifier /reset performs the reset; restart Windows afterward so the change takes effect. Keep a copy of the dump generated during verification because it may contain the clearest evidence of the defect.
Recover if Driver Verifier causes a boot loop
Windows does not run Driver Verifier in Safe Mode, which makes Safe Mode the normal escape route.

- Select Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, and Restart.
- Choose a Safe Mode option and sign in.
- Run
verifier, select the option to delete existing settings, and restart normally. If the graphical utility is unavailable, open an elevated Command Prompt and runverifier /reset, then restart. - Once Windows boots, copy any new dump and remove or roll back the driver that the evidence identifies before attempting another test.
Do not keep retrying normal boot with Verifier active when the machine is crashing repeatedly. The goal is to disable the diagnostic stress, preserve the dump, and return to a controlled repair.
Special case: Hyper-V Server 2012 or 2012 R2 volume removal
Microsoft documented a specific failure in which removing a volume on Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 produced 0x000000D5 on a Hyper-V system. The documented remedy was the applicable July 2014 or November 2014 update rollup. This branch applies only when the server version and the volume-removal symptom match. Microsoft also states that not all 0x000000D5 stop errors are caused by that issue, so do not apply the historical explanation to an ordinary Windows client crash or an unrelated server event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the dump does not identify a reliable driver
A missing or contradictory module can result from memory corruption, an incomplete dump, or several drivers corrupting the same data. Continue with evidence collection instead of replacing hardware at random.
- Confirm that the newest dump was opened and that symbols loaded sufficiently for a meaningful stack.
- Compare two or more dumps from the same symptom. A recurring third-party module is more actionable than a different name in every file.
- Undo the most recent driver, firmware, or device change one at a time.
- Use targeted Driver Verifier only after you have narrowed the candidates, and disable it when the test ends.
- If corruption prevents analysis, document the pattern and involve the computer or device manufacturer with the dumps, stop-screen photographs, and the changes already tested.
These steps distinguish a driver defect from a system that is too damaged to produce trustworthy attribution. They also leave a reversible record for the next technician instead of creating several simultaneous unknowns.
Compare the available approaches
| Approach | Evidence gained | Reversibility | Risk of another crash | Scope | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dump plus WinDbg | Module, stack, parameters, and verifier state | High; analysis changes nothing | Low while merely analyzing | One incident or recurring pattern | First choice for identifying the culprit |
| Update the named driver | Whether a supported build removes the fault | High if the old package is available | Usually lower than stress testing, but compatibility still matters | One device or driver family | A known outdated or corrupted package |
| Roll back the named driver | Whether the prior version restores stability | High | Usually lower than Verifier | One device or driver family | A crash that began immediately after an update |
| Disable the suspect component | Whether the symptom disappears without it | High if documented and temporary | Low for the disabled component; functionality may be lost | One filter, service, or device | Confirmation before replacement |
| Driver Verifier | Stress evidence for a selected driver and Special Pool checks | Moderate; requires deliberate reset and possibly Safe Mode | Highest of these options | Only the selected drivers, if configured correctly | Reproducing a suspected use-after-free defect |
| Historical Hyper-V rollup | Addresses one documented server scenario | Depends on server servicing policy | Not a general diagnostic | Server 2012/2012 R2 volume removal only | Matching the exact Microsoft-documented symptom |
A practical decision checklist
- Named driver on the stop screen or in repeated dumps: save the evidence, then update, roll back, or temporarily disable that driver.
- Crash began after an update: roll back first; test the prior known-good package before changing unrelated devices.
- No reliable module: verify dump retention, compare incidents, and avoid guessing from the numeric code.
- Need to prove a suspect: use Verifier on only that driver or a very small related group, with Safe Mode recovery prepared.
- Verifier loop: boot Safe Mode, reset Verifier, restart, and preserve the resulting dump.
- Hyper-V Server 2012/2012 R2 volume removal: check the applicable 2014 rollup branch; do not generalize it to other 0xD5 crashes.
Keeping the next incident diagnosable
Leave automatic or small dump collection configured, keep sufficient space for the selected dump, and record driver or firmware changes as they happen. When a vendor supplies a replacement package, retain the previous installer until the new version has survived the normal workload. If you enable Driver Verifier for a future investigation, write down exactly which drivers were selected and how to reset it before restarting.
Best Value
The reliable sequence is evidence first, one controlled change second, and verification third. Repeatedly reinstalling every device obscures the cause and can introduce additional mismatched components.
As an optional shortcut after the manual diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, show current and recommended versions, install official drivers, and provide backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription. Results vary, and it does not repair every crash, so keep the dump-based steps above as your diagnostic record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the hexadecimal code alone tell me which company made the faulty driver?
No. 0x000000D5 describes the memory error. The stop-screen filename, dump module, and call stack are needed to connect the failure to a driver.

No. Reset it after the controlled test with the Verifier utility or an elevated verifier /reset command, then restart.
Why is my Minidump folder empty after a blue screen?
Check the Startup and Recovery debugging setting, the dump path, available space, and whether cleanup software removed the file. Without a retained dump, attribution is weaker.
Does the Hyper-V volume-removal fix apply to Windows 11?
No. That documented rollup branch concerns Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 when removing a volume on Hyper-V. Other systems require ordinary dump and driver analysis.
What should I send to a computer or device manufacturer?
Provide the stop-screen photograph, the relevant dump files, the WinDbg !analyze -v output, the named module and stack, and a timeline of driver, firmware, Windows, and hardware changes.
