How to Fix Stick Drift on a PS5 DualSense Controller

If your PS5 character or camera moves while the DualSense stick is untouched, start with Sony’s reset procedure and check for a controller software update. Those steps are low risk and do not erase pairing settings. If the drift remains across games, the joystick module may be worn. Replacing that module on a standard DualSense requires opening the controller and desoldering and soldering components, so use a qualified repairer or PlayStation Repairs unless you already have intermediate electronics-repair skills.

What “stick drift” means on a PS5 controller

Stick drift is unintended analog-stick input. In a game, a character can walk, a camera can rotate, or a menu selection can move even though your thumb is not touching the stick. The usual reader descriptions—“PS5 controller stick drift,” “DualSense analog stick moving by itself,” and “how do I stop my PS5 controller from drifting?”—describe the same symptom.

A DualSense reports the stick’s position through a joystick module. When that module no longer reports a centered position accurately, the console or a game receives movement input at rest. A persistent fault can therefore require a hardware repair rather than a setting change.

First determine whether the problem is the controller or one game

Before opening the DualSense, check whether the behavior occurs in more than one game. A title’s dead-zone or sensitivity options can change how much small stick movement is noticed. That may change the way drift feels in that title, but there is no universal settings fix established for standard DualSense drift.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Test the same stick in another game, preferably one with a different control scheme.
  • Check whether the unwanted movement appears with the stick untouched and whether it affects more than one title.
  • If only one game is affected, inspect that game’s controller and dead-zone settings and restore them to a known default for testing.
  • If the same movement appears across games, continue with Sony’s controller reset and software checks.

Do not treat a game-specific dead-zone adjustment as proof that the module is healthy. It can mask a small off-center reading while leaving the underlying hardware condition unchanged.

Step 1: Reset the DualSense using Sony’s procedure

Sony lists a physical reset as the first troubleshooting step for a DualSense. The reset is separate from a factory reconfiguration: Sony says it does not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing settings.

  1. Turn off the PS5 completely.
  2. Locate the small reset button on the back of the DualSense.
  3. Press the button with a pin or a similar thin tool.
  4. Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
  5. Press the PS button to connect it again.

After reconnecting, test the controller in the game or games where the drift appeared. Keep the USB connection in place through the reconnection step; the purpose is to let the console recognize the reset controller again.

If the drift disappears, continue using the controller and watch for a return of the symptom. If it remains, move to the software-update check rather than repeatedly pressing the reset button.

Step 2: Check for a DualSense software update

DualSense controller updates are delivered when the PS5 system software is updated. Sony also provides a manual path for checking the controller’s installed software:

  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Choose Controller (General).
  4. Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  5. Follow the on-screen instruction if an update is offered.

Restart or reconnect the controller after the console completes an update, then test across the same games you used earlier. A current controller software version is useful to establish before considering hardware work, but an update is not a promise that a physically worn module will be restored.

If drift continues, the joystick module is the likely hardware fault

When reset and current software do not change a repeatable, cross-game symptom, a worn joystick module is a plausible cause. The documented standard-DualSense repair is module replacement, not a plug-in swap. iFixit’s “DualSense Joystick Replacement” guide describes the job as difficult, calls for intermediate soldering skills, and includes desoldering the existing module before installing the replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters. The repair involves opening the controller, removing the old component from its soldered connections, fitting a compatible replacement, and soldering it in place. A person who has never desoldered a component can damage the circuit board or leave the stick electrically unreliable. Do not buy a part assuming that the repair is equivalent to replacing a battery or a removable accessory.

Choose a repair route before buying parts

Route Skill required Must open and solder the standard DualSense? Compatibility responsibility Risk and reversibility
Sony/PlayStation Repairs None beyond describing the fault and following the service process No; the service handles the controller The service identifies the supported repair path for the submitted controller Lowest hands-on risk for the owner; the controller is handled by the service
Qualified electronics repairer The repairer should be experienced with game-controller joystick modules Yes, for a standard DualSense module replacement The repairer must match the part and procedure to the controller revision Less owner risk than a first-time DIY job, but quality depends on the repairer
Do-it-yourself module replacement Intermediate soldering and desoldering skills, as described by iFixit Yes You must identify the revision and verify the replacement before purchase Highest risk of board or component damage; the work is not a simple reversible swap

If you do not already have suitable soldering experience, the official repair route or a qualified repairer is the practical choice. The absence of a verified repair cost in the available guidance means you should obtain a current service quote rather than assume a price.

What a standard DualSense module replacement involves

Use the correct guide for the controller you own

iFixit’s “DualSense Joystick Replacement” documentation is the relevant type of procedure for a standard DualSense. Read the complete guide for your controller revision before ordering anything. The guide’s difficulty rating and soldering requirement should be treated as a prerequisite, not as an optional warning.

Plan for desoldering, not just installation

The old joystick module must be desoldered from the board. That means the job has two demanding phases: removing the existing soldered component without damaging the board, then soldering the replacement so every required connection is sound. A replacement part that physically fits is not enough if its electrical connections are wrong or incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gather only compatible parts and tools

Relevant categories include a DualSense replacement joystick, a PS5 controller joystick module, and appropriate controller soldering tools. iFixit lists a standard replacement joystick and a Gulikit TMR alternative alongside soldering and desoldering tools. Those listings do not make every part universal. Verify the exact part specification and compatibility with your controller revision before buying.

Follow the procedure in sequence

Use the current iFixit guide as the step-by-step authority for disassembly, board access, desoldering, installation, and reassembly. Do not substitute the instructions for another DualSense revision merely because the exterior looks identical. Keep track of the controller’s original orientation and connections while working, and test the controller only after it has been safely reassembled according to the guide.

Understand what success means

A successful repair should stop the unwanted input when the stick is released and should preserve normal movement through its range. If drift remains after a correctly installed module, the replacement may be incompatible, a solder joint may be faulty, or another board-level issue may be present. At that point, stop replacing parts at random and have the controller assessed by a repair professional.

Identify the DualSense revision before ordering a module

DualSense internals and repair procedures vary between revisions. iFixit’s “DualSense Controller V1 Repair Help” explains that the second digit of the controller’s serial number can be used as the version indicator. Use that information with the repair documentation to identify the version you have, then verify that the proposed replacement module and instructions apply to it.

  • Record the controller’s serial number before disassembly.
  • Use the second digit as the version indicator described by iFixit’s V1 repair documentation.
  • Compare the identified revision with the repair guide’s supported model.
  • Confirm the replacement module is specified for that revision before purchasing.
  • If the listing or guide does not clearly establish compatibility, ask the seller or repairer instead of guessing.

Do not infer compatibility solely from the DualSense name, color, or an apparently identical exterior shell. Revision differences can affect the internal procedure and the part that is appropriate.

Do not apply DualSense Edge instructions to a standard DualSense

Sony publishes removable stick-module instructions for the DualSense Edge. That controller is designed around a replaceable stick module, so its procedure is fundamentally different from the soldered-module repair documented for a standard DualSense.

For a regular DualSense, do not present an Edge module swap as a shortcut. The standard controller’s documented repair involves opening the shell and soldering. If you own an Edge, follow Sony’s Edge-specific instructions and identify the correct Edge module; if you own the standard model, use the standard-DualSense repair documentation or a service that works on it.

When professional repair is the safer answer

Use PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repair service if you lack intermediate soldering experience, do not have desoldering equipment, cannot identify the controller revision confidently, or need to avoid the risk of damaging the board. Sony’s controller support materials provide the repair route; start there for the current regional process and eligibility information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repairer should be able to tell you which DualSense revision they support, which joystick module they intend to use, and whether the service covers testing after reassembly. Give them a clear symptom description: which stick drifts, whether it occurs in multiple games, and which reset and software-update steps you completed. That information helps separate a repeatable controller fault from a single-game settings issue.

Troubleshooting branches after each step

The drift occurs in only one game

Keep the controller closed. Recheck that game’s dead-zone and sensitivity settings, then test another title. Because game settings can change perceived behavior, a one-game symptom is not enough evidence to justify a module replacement.

The drift occurs everywhere but disappears after reset

Continue using the controller and monitor it. Sony’s reset does not alter pairing settings, so you do not need to rebuild the controller’s pairing configuration solely because you performed the reset.

The drift occurs everywhere after reset and software is current

Treat the joystick module as a likely hardware suspect. Choose official service, a qualified repairer, or the advanced iFixit-style replacement only after confirming your revision and the required soldering capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new module does not solve the problem

Stop escalating by buying unverified parts. Have the solder joints, module compatibility, and controller board inspected by a repairer. A persistent fault after replacement does not prove that another random module will work.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Opening the controller before checking whether the symptom is limited to one game.
  • Skipping Sony’s reset and software-update checks because drift feels like a hardware problem.
  • Assuming an external cleaning or calibration routine is an established Sony fix for standard DualSense drift; the available official guidance does not establish that.
  • Buying a joystick module without checking the controller revision.
  • Calling the standard DualSense module “removable” because the DualSense Edge has removable modules.
  • Attempting desoldering without the intermediate skills and tools identified in the repair documentation.
  • Describing a replacement part as universal when its compatibility has not been verified.

A concise decision path

  1. Confirm the unwanted movement in more than one game.
  2. Turn off the PS5 and perform Sony’s physical DualSense reset.
  3. Reconnect by USB and press the PS button.
  4. Check Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  5. Test again across the affected games.
  6. If drift persists, identify the controller revision using the serial-number guidance and verify a compatible module.
  7. Choose PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repairer unless you already have intermediate soldering and desoldering skills.
  8. If performing the repair yourself, follow the guide for that exact revision and do not substitute DualSense Edge instructions.

Bottom line

Start with Sony’s reset and controller software checks; they are the appropriate low-risk steps and preserve pairing settings. Persistent, cross-game drift points toward a worn joystick module. On a standard DualSense, replacing that module is an advanced soldering repair whose parts and procedure must match the controller revision. If that work is outside your experience, PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repairer is safer than treating the controller as a plug-and-play repair.
