Start by identifying the exact Apex Pro generation and form factor. SteelSeries uses different reset and calibration procedures for the general Apex Pro family, Apex Pro Gen 3, and Apex Pro TKL 2023. Use the procedure that matches your keyboard, then check the USB connection, actuation profile, and Rapid Trigger setting. Do not apply the TKL 2023 calibration shortcut or the Gen 3 menu reset to an unverified model.
Identify the keyboard before changing anything
“Apex Pro” is a product family, not one identical keyboard. Full-size and TKL layouts, wired and wireless versions, older models, and Gen 3 models can expose different controls. A reset sequence that is correct for one version may do nothing on another.

Read the model name on the keyboard label, packaging, or SteelSeries GG. Note whether it is full-size or TKL, wired or wireless, and whether the product is identified as Gen 3 or TKL 2023. Write down the affected keys and the exact behavior:
- Missed input: a key press produces no character or command.
- Repeated input: one physical press produces two or more characters.
- Ghost input: a key appears to activate without an intentional press, or several keys behave unpredictably.
- Intermittent behavior: the problem appears only in one application, profile, connection mode, or after the keyboard has been idle.
Keep the model information with your notes. SteelSeries Support will need the exact model, software and firmware versions, affected keys, and whether the behavior follows the keyboard when it is connected to another device.

Use this symptom-to-action map
| Observed symptom | First checks | Model limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Several or all keys stop responding | Perform the matching reset, then connect directly to a compatible USB 3.0 port and try another port. | The button-hold reset is a general software-issue procedure; Gen 3 has a separate OLED factory reset. |
| One or more presses are missed | Check the active profile and adjustable actuation level. Confirm the keyboard is detected in SteelSeries GG. | The manual documents actuation adjustment from 1 to 10, but does not establish that one setting causes every missed-input case. |
| A single press registers twice | Temporarily turn Rapid Trigger off and retest. If the behavior remains, continue with reset and connection checks. | Rapid Trigger is a diagnostic variable, not a proven cause of every double-register symptom. |
| Keys activate by themselves on Apex Pro TKL 2023 | Install the latest SteelSeries GG, remove the magnetic wrist rest, and run the documented OmniPoint calibration. | The calibration sequence is specifically for Apex Pro TKL 2023. |
Step 1: Apply the general Apex Pro software reset
Use this sequence for an older or otherwise unverified Apex Pro model when the keyboard is experiencing a software-related failure. It is not the Gen 3 menu reset and it is not the TKL 2023 OmniPoint calibration.
- Unplug the keyboard from the computer. If your setup includes a detachable wireless dongle, remove it as well before starting a procedure that requires the keyboard to be disconnected.
- Press and hold the keyboard’s OLED/menu or multimedia button together with the scroll wheel. The exact button label varies by model; use the control that your model provides.
- While continuing to hold both controls, reconnect the keyboard.
- Keep holding until the keyboard flashes, then release the controls.
- Allow the keyboard to reconnect and test the previously affected keys in a plain text field.
The important detail is timing: the controls must remain held while the keyboard is reconnected. Pressing them after the keyboard has already started normally will not reproduce the documented reset sequence.
Step 2: Reset an Apex Pro Gen 3 from its OLED menu
Apex Pro Gen 3 uses a different factory-reset path. Do not substitute the older button-hold sequence if the keyboard is identified as Gen 3.

- Press and hold the media button to open the OLED control menu.
- Navigate to About.
- Select Factory Reset.
- Confirm the reset when prompted.
A factory reset removes the keyboard’s stored configuration. After it restarts, check the active profile and any actuation or Rapid Trigger settings before judging whether the original fault is gone.

Step 3: Rule out the connection and USB port
A reset cannot correct a poor or incompatible connection. Connect the keyboard directly to a compatible USB 3.0 port rather than through a hub, monitor, dock, or unpowered extension. SteelSeries’ general troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends a direct compatible USB 3.0 connection and trying other ports if the first one fails.
- Disconnect the keyboard from hubs, adapters, and docking stations.
- Connect it directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer.
- Wait for the operating system and SteelSeries GG to detect it.
- Open a basic text editor and test the affected keys one at a time.
- If the fault remains, shut down or disconnect the keyboard, move it to another compatible USB port, and repeat the test.
For a wireless configuration, test the keyboard with the appropriate wired connection when available, and make sure the wireless dongle is connected as required by that model. Keep the connection mode in your notes because a fault that occurs only wirelessly points to a different support path than one that occurs in both modes.
Step 4: Check the active profile and adjustable actuation
Apex Pro and Apex Pro TKL models document adjustable actuation through their OLED controls. The available range is 1 to 10. A profile can therefore feel different from another profile even though the key hardware has not changed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the keyboard’s OLED controls.
- Identify the profile currently in use.
- View the actuation value for the affected key or profile.
- Record the current value before changing it.
- Choose a clearly different value within the documented 1-to-10 range and test the key in a text editor or other simple application.
- Switch back to the original value if the change does not improve the behavior, then test another stored profile to determine whether the symptom is profile-specific.
The available documentation establishes how to adjust actuation, not that a particular number is responsible for a particular failure. Treat this as an isolation test. If one profile works and another does not, save the working profile and inspect the non-working profile’s settings in SteelSeries GG.

- The compact tenkeyless design is the most popular form factor used by the pros, allowing you to position the keyboard for comfort and to maximize in-game performance.
- Our whisper quiet gaming switches with anti-ghosting technology for keystroke accuracy are made from durable low friction material for near silent use and guaranteed performance for over 20 million keypresses.
- Designed with IP32 Water & Dust Resistant for extra durability to prevent damage from liquids and dust particles, so you can continue to play no matter what happens to your keyboard.
- PrismSync RGB Illumination allows you to choose from millions of colors and effects from reactive lighting to interactive lightshows that bring RGB to the next level.
- Dedicated Multimedia Controls with a clickable volume roller and media keys allowing you to adjust brightness, rewind, skip or pause all at the touch of a button.
Do not confuse a high or low actuation value with a confirmed hardware defect. A missed input can have several possible explanations, and the sources do not assign a universal “correct” actuation number for all Apex Pro owners.
Step 5: Temporarily disable Rapid Trigger when presses repeat
Rapid Trigger changes how a key responds to movement and release. SteelSeries documents a keyboard shortcut for Apex PRO models: hold the SteelSeries key and press T to toggle Rapid Trigger. Model-specific OLED controls and status indicators show whether it is enabled.
- Note whether Rapid Trigger is currently enabled on the affected profile.
- Press and hold the SteelSeries key, then press T.
- Confirm the status change on the keyboard’s OLED display or indicator.
- Repeat the same key presses in a plain text field.
- Restore the original setting after the test if you need to compare both states.
If double registration stops only when Rapid Trigger is disabled, record that result for support. It is useful evidence, but it does not prove Rapid Trigger caused the issue in every case. If repeated registration continues with Rapid Trigger off, proceed with the reset and connection procedures instead of repeatedly toggling the feature.

Step 6: Calibrate ghost inputs on Apex Pro TKL 2023
SteelSeries provides a dedicated OmniPoint actuation-calibration procedure for the Apex Pro TKL 2023. Use it when that exact model produces ghost inputs or has inaccurate actuation. Do not generalize this shortcut to every Apex Pro keyboard.

- Aircraft-grade aluminum alloy frame – Manufactured for unbreakable durability and sturdiness
- Dynamic per-key RGB illumination – Gorgeous color schemes and reactive effects for every key
- Premium magnetic wrist rest – Provides full palm support and comfort
- Install the latest available SteelSeries GG version for the keyboard.
- Remove the magnetic wrist rest from the keyboard before calibration.
- Unplug the keyboard. Disconnect the wireless dongle too if your setup uses one.
- Hold SteelSeries + I + O while reconnecting the keyboard.
- Follow the on-screen or keyboard prompts and fully press every OmniPoint key when requested. A partial press does not complete the intended calibration movement.
- When the keyboard indicates that calibration is complete, save the result by pressing SteelSeries + I + O again.
- Test the keys in a plain text field and then in the application where the ghost input was first observed.
Removing the magnetic wrist rest is part of the documented TKL 2023 process, not an optional accessory recommendation. The scope matters: this sequence was documented for the Apex Pro TKL 2023, so using it on a different generation can fail to start calibration or leave the keyboard unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Separate a keyboard fault from a computer or application fault
Once the matching reset, USB checks, profile review, and applicable calibration are complete, test the keyboard in the simplest environment available. A plain text editor is preferable to a game, macro-enabled application, or browser extension because it minimizes software that could transform input.
If possible, connect the keyboard to another computer and repeat a short, controlled test: press each affected key individually, then hold a key long enough to check whether it repeats unexpectedly. Record whether the same physical keys fail or repeat. If the problem follows the keyboard across devices, include that fact in a SteelSeries Support request. If it occurs only on one computer, provide the computer’s operating system, SteelSeries GG version, connection method, and the application in which the fault appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not draw a hardware conclusion from one application alone. A key that works in a text editor but fails in one game or utility may be affected by that program’s key bindings, input mode, or profile selection. Conversely, a key that fails in every test environment after a model-matched reset deserves support escalation.

What to send SteelSeries Support
Contact SteelSeries Support when the documented reset and connection checks do not restore normal operation, or when calibration for an Apex Pro TKL 2023 does not resolve ghost input. A precise report reduces back-and-forth.
- Exact model name, generation, layout, and wired or wireless variant.
- Operating system and SteelSeries GG version.
- Keyboard firmware version, if displayed by SteelSeries GG.
- Every affected key and whether it is missed, repeated, or activated without a press.
- Whether the issue appears in one profile or all profiles.
- Whether Rapid Trigger was enabled and what happened when it was toggled off.
- Which reset procedure you used and what the keyboard displayed afterward.
- Whether you used a direct compatible USB 3.0 port and tried another port.
- Whether the behavior follows the keyboard to another device.
Describe the result of each step rather than only saying that the keyboard is “broken.” For example, state that the general hold-while-reconnecting reset completed with a flash, but the same key still missed input on two direct USB ports. That gives support a reproducible sequence.
When a replacement is appropriate
A replacement should be the last resort after the model-matched reset, connection testing, profile checks, Rapid Trigger diagnostic, and applicable calibration have failed. The available guidance does not justify replacing every Apex Pro that misses or repeats a key.
If support confirms that replacement is appropriate, match the original keyboard on all of these points:
- Exact generation, including whether it is Gen 3 or an earlier family member.
- Full-size versus TKL form factor.
- Physical layout and regional key arrangement.
- Wired versus wireless version.
- Required OLED, OmniPoint, actuation, and Rapid Trigger features.
Do not assume that a product with “Apex Pro” in its name has the same dimensions, controls, reset method, or stored-profile behavior as yours. A replacement is not a repair, and an apparently similar model can create new compatibility or layout problems.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Using the wrong reset: Gen 3’s OLED Factory Reset and the general hold-button reset are separate procedures.
- Applying TKL 2023 calibration everywhere: the SteelSeries + I + O sequence is documented specifically for Apex Pro TKL 2023.
- Changing several settings at once: toggle one variable, test, and record the result so you know what changed.
- Testing only inside a game: use a plain text field first to remove game-specific bindings from the diagnosis.
- Leaving the keyboard on a hub during troubleshooting: connect directly to a compatible USB 3.0 port and try another port.
- Assuming Rapid Trigger is the cause: disabling it is a useful comparison, not proof of causation.
- Buying a similarly named replacement: verify generation, layout, size, and connection type before ordering.
A concise decision sequence
- Identify the exact Apex Pro model and record the affected keys.
- Use the general reset only for an unverified or older model; use the OLED Factory Reset path for Gen 3.
- Connect directly to a compatible USB 3.0 port and test another port.
- Check the active profile and actuation value, which is adjustable from 1 to 10 on the documented Apex Pro and Apex Pro TKL controls.
- For repeated registration, toggle Rapid Trigger with SteelSeries + T and compare the result.
- For ghost input on Apex Pro TKL 2023, update SteelSeries GG, remove the magnetic wrist rest, and complete the OmniPoint calibration.
- Test in a plain text field and, when possible, on another computer.
- Send the complete model, version, symptom, and test history to SteelSeries Support before considering a model-matched replacement.
