Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen Steam Remote Play connects and the host crashes as video encoding starts, the fastest path is to isolate the encoder rather than change router settings at random. Update graphics drivers on both computers, disable host hardware encoding and client hardware decoding for a controlled test, identify the active encoder in Steam’s detailed overlay, then use streaming_log.txt to decide whether the fault is a driver, codec, capture backend, or software conflict. Network-port checks are useful only when a session cannot connect.
First identify when the failure occurs
Remote Play problems fall into two different groups. A connection-stage failure happens before a stream is established: the client cannot find the host, authentication fails, or the session never starts. A process-level failure happens after the session begins, often when Steam starts capturing and encoding the game. The second group commonly presents as a Steam crash, a black screen followed by a disconnect, or an encoder initialization error. Port forwarding cannot repair a process that crashes while opening a codec.

| Observed symptom | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Client cannot establish any session | Firewall, router and Steam Remote Play ports | The stream has not reached the capture or encoder stage. |
| Session starts, then the host crashes or disconnects as video appears | Driver, encoder and codec isolation | The failure occurs in the host capture/encode path. |
| Black screen in every game without a host crash | Disable host hardware encoding, then client hardware decoding | Steam lists these toggles as first-line isolation steps for all-game streaming failures. |
| Only one game fails | Compare that game with a second title before changing system-wide settings | A game-specific capture or renderer interaction is more likely than a global encoder fault. |
Keep the two categories separate throughout troubleshooting. A successful port test does not prove that NVENC, QuickSync, VA-API or software encoding can initialize, and a clean encoder test does not prove that a firewall permits the session.
Record a clean baseline before changing settings
Write down the state of both machines while the failure is reproducible. This prevents several changes from obscuring the cause and gives Steam Support useful evidence if you need to escalate.

Use one repeatable test game and the same client for each run. After every change, launch that game, connect once, wait through the same menu or scene, and note whether the result is a crash, a black screen, a stable stream, or a visible quality/performance change.
Update graphics drivers on both computers
Steam’s Remote Play FAQ puts driver updates first: “Update your video drivers on both computers, if you haven’t already.” Install the current driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer on the host and the client, reboot each machine, and repeat the baseline test. Remote Play can use different hardware paths on the two ends, so updating only the gaming PC leaves the client decoder unchanged.
Do not treat “latest” as a guarantee. Encoder compatibility depends on GPU generation, operating system, codec and Steam’s capture backend. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver using the vendor’s supported rollback procedure. Record both versions and the date of each installation. A rollback is a controlled comparison, not a permanent recommendation; return to a supported current driver after identifying the regression or confirming that the older package is required for your hardware.

Test the host with hardware encoding disabled
- On the host computer, open Steam.
- Open Steam > Settings > Remote Play.
- Open the advanced host options.
- Temporarily clear Enable hardware encoding.
- Apply the setting, start the same game and connect from the same client.
This forces Steam away from the GPU’s hardware encoder and toward software encoding when the selected codec and build permit it. A stable session after this change strongly implicates the hardware capture/encode path, its driver, or a codec-specific initialization. It does not identify which of those three is at fault, so keep the result as a branch for the next tests.
Test the client with hardware decoding disabled
- On the client computer, open Steam > Settings > Remote Play.
- Open the client’s advanced options.
- Temporarily clear the hardware-decoding option.
- Reconnect using the same game and host configuration.
If disabling client decoding fixes the stream while the host still uses hardware encoding, the fault is on the client decode path or its driver rather than the host encoder. If neither toggle changes the crash, continue with the driver, codec and log checks instead of repeatedly switching the same options.
Interpret the four controlled combinations
| Host hardware encoding | Client hardware decoding | Useful interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| On | On | Normal accelerated path; use this as the failing baseline. |
| Off | On | Tests whether host GPU encoding triggers the failure. |
| On | Off | Tests whether client GPU decoding triggers the failure. |
| Off | Off | Software path on both sides; useful as a stability reference, with potentially higher CPU use. |
Run enough repetitions to make the result reproducible, but change only one switch between runs. If the host process crashes in all four combinations, the encoder may not be the only component involved; capture software, overlays, a game-specific renderer or a broader Steam installation problem becomes more plausible.

Use Steam’s detailed overlay to identify the active encoder
A setting does not always reveal which path Steam actually selected. During a Remote Play session, set the client performance overlay to Details and press F6. Read the encoder description and record it with the GPU and driver versions.

| Label shown by Steam | What it indicates |
|---|---|
QuickSync |
Intel hardware-accelerated encoding. |
NVFBC or NVIFR |
NVIDIA hardware encoding through Steam’s capture path. |
libx264 |
Software H.264 encoding; Steam has fallen back from a hardware encoder or is using software by configuration. |
Capture the label before changing anything. Seeing libx264 explains why CPU load may rise, but it does not by itself prove that the crash is solved or caused by software encoding. Conversely, seeing a hardware label confirms the selected family but does not establish that every codec or driver feature is healthy.
Compare the overlay with the toggle tests. For example, if the failing run shows QuickSync and clearing host hardware encoding produces a stable run showing libx264, the Intel hardware path is the first target for driver and codec checks. If both runs show the same label, the toggle may not have applied, the stream may have restarted with another setting, or the failure lies elsewhere; verify the setting and collect the log.
Check codec selection deliberately
Remote Play clients may expose H.264, HEVC or, on some systems, AV1. Treat the codec as an independent variable. Keep hardware encoding enabled, test one codec, then repeat with another codec that both machines support. Do not compare results from different codecs while also changing drivers or overlay software.

Linux: test VA-API and HEVC as separate variables
Steam release notes document VA-API hardware encoding on Linux and state that it can be disabled by turning off AMD and Intel hardware encoding in the advanced host settings. A Valve issue dated 2024-11-15 describes a reproducible host crash when HEVC hardware encoding was selected on an Intel Arc GPU; FFmpeg failed while initializing the VA-API encoder. That report is specific to the reported hardware and software combination, but it makes a useful diagnostic pattern for Linux systems.
- Reproduce once with your normal Linux codec and hardware-encoding settings, and save the encoder label and timestamp.
- Keep the same game and client, switch from HEVC to H.264 if both are offered, and test again.
- If the crash remains, disable AMD and Intel hardware encoding in the advanced host settings and retest using software encoding.
- Compare the results and inspect
streaming_log.txtfor VA-API or FFmpeg initialization errors.
A stable H.264 or software run narrows the problem to the HEVC/VA-API hardware path, but it does not prove that every Linux VA-API configuration is defective. Keep hardware encoding disabled as a workaround only if the extra CPU load is acceptable, and continue using the log and driver versions to identify a durable fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control software conflicts one change at a time
Capture hooks, overlays, GPU-tuning utilities and compiler runtimes can interact with a driver’s encode or capture API. Disable or uninstall such software only as a controlled experiment, and restore it if it makes no difference.
A 2023 Steam Community report describes a Windows 10 host with an AMD RX 580 that crashed whenever hardware encoding started. The author reported that uninstalling Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ compiler packages resolved that particular conflict. This is an anecdotal, hardware-specific report, not a universal remedy. Do not remove development tools on the assumption that they cause all Remote Play crashes; first reproduce with Steam’s own toggles and a clean driver test.
Best Value
For each suspected conflict, close or disable one component, reboot if its vendor requires it, and run the same test. Record the exact version and the before/after result. If a conflict is confirmed, report the software name and version alongside the encoder label rather than presenting the anecdote as a general fix.
Find and preserve the streaming log
Steam Support directs users to the host’s logs/streaming_log.txt for streaming or audio errors and asks users to save performance statistics for support. Open the log after reproducing the crash and preserve the complete section around the failure, not just a single line. Keep the original timestamp so the relevant event can be located after a support upload or a second test.
Your support packet should include:
- The host and client operating systems and Steam client channel.
- GPU models and exact driver versions for both machines.
- Codec selected for the failing run and whether hardware encoding or decoding was disabled.
- The encoder label from the Details overlay, such as
QuickSync,NVFBC,NVIFRorlibx264. - The game used, whether other games reproduce the problem, and the exact failure stage.
- The relevant
streaming_log.txtlines and the time of the crash. - Any controlled change that made the stream stable, including a driver rollback or software-conflict test.
Do not edit the log before saving a copy. If you need to redact personal paths or account identifiers, keep an untouched local copy and clearly mark the redacted version as such.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Remote Play ports only for connection failures
Steam Support lists these Remote Play ports:
| Protocol | Ports | When to check |
|---|---|---|
| UDP | 27031, 27036 | Client cannot establish the session or discovery fails. |
| TCP | 27036, 27037 | Firewall or router rules block the Remote Play connection. |
Verify firewall permissions on both computers and router rules where applicable. If Steam connects successfully and the host crashes as encoding begins, return to the encoder and driver sequence; forwarding these ports will not repair a process-level encoder failure.
A practical decision path
- Update and reboot: Install current graphics drivers on host and client, reboot, and repeat the baseline.
- Classify the symptom: Separate connection failure from a crash or black screen after the stream starts.
- Disable host hardware encoding: Retest and note whether the crash disappears.
- Disable client hardware decoding: Retest independently to isolate the receiving side.
- Read the Details overlay: Press F6 and record the active encoder label.
- Test codecs: Compare H.264 and HEVC separately; on Linux, make VA-API and HEVC explicit variables.
- Roll back deliberately: If the failure began with a driver update, test the previous stable driver through the vendor’s rollback method.
- Control conflicts: Test overlays, capture tools, GPU tuners and compiler runtimes one at a time.
- Collect evidence: Save
streaming_log.txt, overlay statistics, versions and timestamps. - Check ports: Do this when no session can connect, not as a substitute for encoder diagnostics.
What a successful diagnosis looks like
A useful result is specific: “On Windows 10 with an AMD RX 580, Steam crashes when the overlay reports a hardware encoder; disabling host hardware encoding produces a stable libx264 stream,” or “On Linux with an Intel Arc GPU, HEVC fails during VA-API initialization while H.264 works.” Those statements identify the machine, path and controlled change. “Remote Play is broken” does not.
Once you have a stable combination, decide whether its trade-offs are acceptable. Software encoding can increase host CPU use; hardware encoding can reduce that load but depends on the GPU generation, driver and codec. Client hardware decoding can lower client CPU use, while disabling it may improve compatibility at the cost of more CPU work. Keep the stable setting while you evaluate image quality, latency and frame pacing, and retain the log and version details in case a future Steam or driver update changes the result.
