When a Steam Machine game will not start, returns to the library, or crashes after its logos, work through the fixes in this order: restart and update SteamOS, verify the game files, check security software, test a different Proton version, and only then investigate a post-update shader-cache problem. These steps move from safe, reversible repairs to title-specific diagnostics while preserving the evidence a developer needs if the failure continues.
Why a Steam Machine game can fail even after it finishes downloading
SteamOS is Linux-based. Many Windows games run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer, rather than as native Linux applications. A complete download therefore does not prove that the game can initialize on your particular SteamOS build, hardware revision, display mode, controller setup, or peripheral combination.

Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS through Proton, citing more than 18,000 titles on its SteamOS page when accessed in 2026. That is a library-wide count, not a guarantee that every title launches reliably, and Valve does not publish a universal crash-rate percentage.

- Installation damage: a missing, altered, or incomplete executable or data file.
- Security interference: antivirus or other security software quarantined a file the game needs.
- Compatibility-layer failure: the default Proton build does not handle this title, update, launcher, or anti-cheat component correctly.
- Runtime or title-specific failure: a bad generated shader cache, a game update regression, an unsupported launcher, or a hardware/peripheral interaction.
The visible symptom helps choose the next test, but it does not identify the cause by itself. A game that immediately returns to the Steam menu can be missing an executable, blocked by security software, or failing during Proton startup.
The fastest repair sequence
Perform these steps in order. After each one, launch the game once and note whether the behavior changed. Do not change several variables at the same time; otherwise you will not know which action mattered.
- Restart the Steam Machine. A full restart clears a stuck process and reloads the Steam client and system services.
- Install pending updates. Apply SteamOS and Steam client updates before changing per-game settings. SteamOS updates include platform and driver maintenance.
- Verify the game files. Use the game’s Steam Properties tools to compare the local installation with Steam’s manifest and replace files that do not match.
- Inspect security software. If an executable is missing or the title closes immediately, check quarantine and restore or allow the file only when you recognize it as part of the game installation.
- Test Proton. In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility, enable “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool,” and test one installed official Proton option.
- Handle an update-related crash cautiously. If the problem began after a system or game update and support evidence points to a damaged generated shader cache, clear that cache using the title’s documented method and retry.
- Escalate with records. If the title still fails, send the exact error, game and SteamOS versions, tested compatibility tool, and newest crash report to the game’s developer or publisher.
Restarting, updating, and file verification are broadly reversible. Deleting generated caches or forcing a compatibility tool is more targeted and should be done only after the basic checks.

Restart before troubleshooting a specific game
Exit the game, choose the Steam Machine’s restart command, and wait for the system to return to the Steam interface. This removes a stale game process that can make a later launch appear to do nothing. It also resets temporary graphics and controller state without changing your installation.
Install both system and client updates
Open the system settings and Steam update controls, install every pending SteamOS and Steam client update, and restart if prompted. Valve’s guidance treats SteamOS updates as the normal way to receive platform and driver maintenance. A game that broke after an update may require a follow-up SteamOS build rather than a per-game workaround.

Record the SteamOS version shown in system information. The version is important when you later compare results or contact support, because the same Proton setting can behave differently across system builds.
Step 2: Verify the game’s installed files
Use the built-in Properties tool
- Open your Steam Library.
- Select the game that will not launch.
- Open the game’s context menu or options button and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (the wording can vary slightly by Steam client build).
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game again without changing Proton or other settings.
Verification compares the local files with Steam’s installation manifest. If files are missing or differ, Steam downloads replacements. It is the first repair for a missing-executable message, a failed download, or a crash that began after an interrupted update.
What verification can and cannot repair
Verification repairs files in the Steam installation. It does not automatically fix a Proton compatibility defect, an account or server outage, a broken third-party launcher, or a security product that immediately quarantines the repaired executable. If verification reports that files were restored but the game still returns to the library, proceed to the security and Proton checks rather than repeating verification indefinitely.
Steam’s support guidance identifies antivirus interference, corrupted files, and failed downloads as common reasons for missing-executable errors. Keep any verification result or error text for your support report.
Step 3: Check antivirus and other security software
When to suspect quarantine
Inspect security software when Steam reports that an executable is missing, verification repeatedly replaces the same file, or the game closes immediately after you press Play. Open the security product’s quarantine or detection history and look for a file belonging to the affected game.

Restore only a known game file
If the quarantined item is clearly part of the game and came from the official Steam installation, restore it and add an appropriate allow rule according to the security product’s controls. Do not disable all protection as a first response, and do not restore an item you cannot identify. Run the security product’s own scan and verify the game again after any restoration.

That information is more useful to the game’s support team than simply saying that the game “does nothing.”
Step 4: Test Proton compatibility one change at a time
Force an installed Proton option
- Open the game’s Steam Library page.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select one installed official Proton option from the list.
- Close Properties and launch the game.
The setting is per game and reversible. If the result is worse, return to Compatibility and disable the forced option to restore the default behavior. Test one version at a time and record the exact Proton name shown in the menu.
How to interpret the result
- The forced version launches: leave that setting in place temporarily and report the working Proton version if the title has an active support channel.
- The forced version changes the symptom but still fails: record both symptoms; a change from an immediate return to a graphical crash is diagnostic evidence.
- No installed version works: stop cycling through versions. The cause may be the game’s launcher, anti-cheat, a recent title update, or a system-level issue.
- Only the default works: disable the forced option and keep the default, since forcing a different tool can introduce regressions in future updates.
Proton behavior is title-specific. Valve documents the control, but a compatibility-tool choice is not a universal fix and should not be presented as proof that every build of a game is supported.
Step 5: Deal with crashes that began after an update
Update first, then consider generated shader data
Install pending SteamOS and Steam client updates before deleting anything. If the crash started immediately after an update and available support guidance identifies a damaged generated shader cache, clear that cache using the game or platform’s documented cache-removal procedure, then launch the title again so the cache can be rebuilt.

Shader-cache deletion is not a universal remedy. It can increase the time of the next launch while data is regenerated, and deleting unrelated Proton prefixes or user data can create new problems. Do not remove broad directories merely because a crash occurred; use the title’s documented scope and preserve the newest crash report first.
Preserve the newest crash report
Some support teams, including guidance published for affected PC titles, ask users to keep the latest crash report. Save or copy the newest report before running repeated tests that might overwrite it. Note the time of the crash, the game version, SteamOS version, Proton version, display mode, and connected peripherals.
Match the remedy to the symptom

This ordering favors small-scope, reversible actions before changes that affect compatibility or generated data. It also separates a single-game problem from a system-wide one: if several unrelated games fail after an update, prioritize SteamOS and client maintenance; if one title fails, concentrate on its files, security handling, Proton behavior, and title-specific requirements.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation says compatibility results are translated into customer-visible Steam Deck and Steam Machine ratings. The rating is a screening signal based on Valve’s testing findings; it is not a promise that every title launches on every SteamOS build, hardware revision, display mode, or peripheral setup.
A title can be marked Unsupported because of a Proton-specific blocking bug, unacceptable performance, anti-cheat requirements, a launcher dependency, or another title-specific condition. The label does not tell you which local file is damaged, and changing Proton cannot remove an online service requirement that the game itself does not support.
Use the rating to set expectations before troubleshooting, then check the title’s current notes and support channel for requirements such as a particular launcher, anti-cheat mode, or known update regression. Treat a playable or supported rating as evidence that the title worked in Valve’s test conditions, not as a guarantee for your exact setup.
When launchers, anti-cheat, or peripherals are the real blocker
Third-party launchers
A game may download correctly but fail when its Windows launcher initializes inside Proton. If the launcher displays its own error, record that message separately from Steam’s behavior. Verify the game first, then test one Proton option; repeated file checks will not repair a service outage or launcher account problem.
Anti-cheat
Anti-cheat support is title-specific. A game can remain Unsupported even when its single-player executable works, because its online mode requires an anti-cheat configuration unavailable on the SteamOS setup. Do not bypass anti-cheat controls or substitute unofficial files. Use the developer’s published compatibility statement and include the game mode that fails in your report.
Displays and peripherals
If the game launches on one display or with one controller but crashes with another, reproduce the failure with the simplest setup: one display, the standard input device, and no recently added peripheral. Record the working and failing configurations. This narrows a hardware or mode interaction without changing the installation.
Diagnose an “app already running” error
- Restart the Steam Machine to clear a process that did not close cleanly.
- Launch the title from the normal Steam client, not a beta client.
- If the error remains, capture the exact wording and the time it appeared.
- Verify the game files and retry once.
- If the title still fails, contact the game’s support team with the SteamOS version, game version, compatibility tool, and crash report.
Steam Support’s guidance for this error directs users to the game’s support team when the title continues to fail. A support request that includes the exact message and the tests already completed avoids sending you through the same basic steps again.
Build a useful support report
Send one concise report after you have completed the safe checks. Include:
- Steam Machine model or hardware description and the SteamOS version.
- Game name, game version if displayed, and the exact failure point.
- Whether the game was verified and whether Steam replaced files.
- Security software detections, including the file path and detection name, if any.
- The default Proton behavior and every forced Proton version tested.
- Display mode, monitor or television, controller, and unusual peripherals.
- The newest crash report, preserved before further tests overwrite it.
- The exact error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
Describe the shortest reproducible sequence, such as “Select Play, logos appear, then the Steam library returns.” Avoid reporting only that the game is “broken”; the symptom and timing determine which logs and fixes are relevant.

How to avoid making the problem harder to diagnose
- Do not change Proton, delete caches, and reinstall the game simultaneously.
- Do not repeatedly delete generated data without support evidence that it is damaged.
- Do not disable all security protection when checking a single quarantined file.
- Do not assume a compatibility badge guarantees your particular display, controller, or SteamOS build.
- Do not keep testing a beta Steam client when troubleshooting an “app already running” failure; establish whether the normal client works first.
- Write down each change and its result so you can undo a setting that made the behavior worse.
Most launch failures can be narrowed without reinstalling the operating system. Restarting and updating address system state, verification addresses damaged installation files, security checks address quarantined executables, Proton testing addresses compatibility-layer behavior, and a preserved crash report gives the developer a practical starting point when the failure is title-specific.
