Use this troubleshooting order
The order matters because it moves from low-risk changes that affect one game toward system-level actions. The same basic process applies to both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models unless Valve’s current instructions say otherwise.

- Update SteamOS and restart. In Gaming Mode, open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates. Install available updates, then choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Temporarily close third-party Desktop Mode applications. Apps installed or running through Desktop Mode can affect stability. Exit or disable them, then test the game again.
- Check the game’s compatibility notes. Open the game’s Store page and inspect its Steam Deck Compatibility section, not just the badge.
- Try a per-game Proton setting when appropriate. This is mainly for a Windows build or for a game whose native Linux version is not working correctly.
- Verify the installed files. This addresses missing or damaged content without resetting the whole Deck.
- For a game that launches but runs badly, reduce graphics load. Start with the preset, then tune individual settings.
- Isolate dock and external-display problems. A game that is fine handheld but fails on a monitor has a different troubleshooting path.
- Escalate persistent, broad failures. Consider the Steam Deck Beta, support forums, or Steam Support before recovery. Rollback, reset, and re-image actions belong at the end.
Valve describes Deck Verified as a four-category system indicating how well games will work on Steam Deck. That is a compatibility assessment, not a promise that every future game update, launcher change, save state, or user configuration will continue to work perfectly.

Install SteamOS updates
Out-of-date system software can leave a game, Proton, or the Steam client in a state that a simple launch retry will not fix. Go to Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, apply every available update, and wait for the installation to finish. Then restart from Steam > Power > Restart rather than merely closing the game.

After the restart, test the affected title before changing several game settings. A single controlled retry tells you whether the update itself resolved the problem.
Temporarily disable Desktop Mode additions
Third-party utilities installed through Desktop Mode can interfere with games or system stability. Close them or disable their autostart behavior for one test session. If the game works afterward, re-enable additions one at a time to identify the conflict instead of changing multiple variables together.
This step is diagnostic, not a recommendation to remove every Desktop Mode application permanently. Keep a note of what you disabled so you can restore your normal setup after testing.
Determine whether the failure is local or system-wide
- If one game fails while other titles launch, focus on that game’s compatibility mode, installation, launcher, or settings.
- If several games fail after an update, or Gaming Mode itself is unstable, treat the issue as a possible SteamOS problem and move toward support escalation.
- If the game works handheld but not while docked, use the external-display branch later in this guide.
Read the game’s Deck Verified status correctly
Valve’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide says: “The Deck Verified system has four categories that indicate how well games will work on Steam Deck.” The categories are useful starting evidence, but the badge is not a permanent guarantee.

For Playable or Unsupported titles, the Store page’s Steam Deck Compatibility section identifies which Verified requirements are not met. That information can explain a required keyboard interaction, an external launcher, text that is difficult to read, or a control issue. It does not establish that a particular Proton release will fix the problem.

Valve’s general launch guidance also points Linux users running Windows games with Proton toward the Steam Play community discussion forum for game-specific troubleshooting. Treat reports there as clues: game updates and Proton versions can change the result.
Choose between the native Linux build and Proton
A Steam game may offer a native Linux version, a Windows version run through Proton, or both. The practical choice is the path that launches reliably and behaves correctly on your Deck, guided by the game’s compatibility notes.

Force a Proton tool for one game
- In the Library, highlight the affected game.
- Press the Deck’s Menu button.
- Open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available in the list, then close Properties and launch the game.
Forcing Proton is a targeted experiment, not a universal upgrade. If Steam begins downloading a large additional installation, it may be switching from the Linux build to the Windows build. Allow that download to finish before judging the result.
Record which path you tested and whether the game reached its menu, displayed an error, crashed after the launcher, or ran with missing features. If the latest Proton version fails, do not assume an older version is better without current, game-specific evidence; try another available tool only when the game’s notes or reliable current reports give you a reason.
Verify the game’s files
Use file verification when a game crashes, refuses to start after an interrupted update, reports missing content, or behaves as though an installation component is absent. It checks the local installation rather than repairing SteamOS.

- Open the game’s Library entry.
- Press the Menu button and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish; Valve notes that it can take several minutes.
Valve’s file-verification instructions warn that one or more files may fail verification normally. Local configuration files can be different from the copies on Steam’s servers and should not necessarily be replaced. A failed count is therefore not, by itself, proof that the entire installation is corrupt.
After verification, launch the game once before changing Proton or graphics settings again. If verification repeatedly reacquires the same large files, note the pattern for Steam Support rather than repeatedly validating without recording what happens.
Fix a game that launches but runs poorly
Performance problems require a different remedy from launch failures. Valve’s guidance is to reduce the game’s graphics load; it does not provide one universal preset or guaranteed frame rate for every title.
Lower the preset first
Open the game’s graphics or video menu and select a lower preset. Restart the game if it requests one. Test the same scene or activity after each change so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.
Then reduce individual heavy settings
- Lower resolution or rendering scale if the game offers those controls.
- Reduce shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, and view distance when the preset alone is not enough.
- Disable optional post-processing effects that add visual load without being essential to play.
Change one or two settings at a time and note the result. A lower setting can improve consistency while making the image less detailed; there is no evidence-backed setting combination that is best for every game.

Separate performance from connection or launcher delays
A long pause before a menu, shader processing, or an external launcher login is not the same as low frame-rate rendering. Observe whether the game is slow only during loading, only in crowded scenes, or everywhere. That distinction determines whether graphics changes are relevant or whether the problem belongs to the launch and compatibility path.

If the game is stable in handheld mode but the image is poor, the frame rate drops, or output disappears when docked, isolate the docked setup instead of treating it as a general Steam Deck game failure.
Valve’s Docking the Steam Deck guidance says docked display quality or performance may require in-game adjustments and, depending on the setup, a different cable or input connector. Test the Deck directly on the display, try another compatible cable or input, and compare the same game in handheld mode.
Third-party USB-C docks and hubs may work, but Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks are not officially supported by Valve. That limitation applies to the dock setup; it does not make buying a dock a general remedy for a game that will not launch in handheld mode.

- Handheld works, docked fails: investigate resolution, display mode, cable, input, and dock compatibility.
- Both modes fail: return to game compatibility, Proton, file verification, and SteamOS checks.
- Only one monitor fails: compare another display or input before changing the game installation.
Escalate persistent problems without wiping the Deck
Try the Steam Deck Beta only for continuing system trouble
Valve suggests trying the Steam Deck Beta after updates and a restart have not resolved persistent stability or performance problems. Beta software is a changing test channel, not a guaranteed repair. Use it when the symptoms affect the system or several games and you are prepared to return to the stable channel if the behavior changes or worsens.
For discussion and current reports, Valve points to SteamOS/Steam Deck Discussions and Steam Support. Include the game name, Deck model, SteamOS version, whether you used the native build or Proton, the exact symptom, and the steps already tested.
Understand recovery choices before selecting one
Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting and SteamOS Installation and Repair documents distinguish several actions. Their labels and menu paths can change, so verify the current Valve instructions immediately before proceeding.

Do not factory-reset or re-image merely because one title is stuck at “Preparing to Launch.” Exhaust game-level steps and contact support when the failure is narrow. Recovery becomes reasonable when multiple system functions are broken, ordinary troubleshooting has failed, and you have a clear backup and data-recovery plan.

What to record before contacting Steam Support
A concise reproduction record makes a system-level investigation more useful:
- Deck model (LCD or OLED) and current SteamOS version.
- Game title, installed branch, and Deck Verified category shown on the Store page.
- Whether Steam selected a native Linux build or you forced Proton, including the Proton version.
- The exact point of failure: no response, “Preparing to Launch,” launcher error, crash, missing content, or poor frame rate.
- Whether the issue occurs handheld, docked, or in both modes.
- Dates of recent SteamOS or game updates and the result of file verification.
- Any third-party Desktop Mode applications temporarily disabled during testing.
Use Valve’s general launch troubleshooting article for additional launch context, then contact Steam Support when the documented steps do not resolve the problem. Keep recovery actions as the final branch, with the data consequences understood before you select them.
