If a Steam Deck game freezes or its sound disappears after you wake the device, start with low-risk checks: install SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and temporarily exit third-party Desktop Mode apps. For silent speakers, check audio routing before changing game settings. Then determine whether the fault affects one game or the whole system; that distinction guides the next steps.
1. Update SteamOS and restart
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- After the Deck restarts, launch the affected game, put the device to sleep, and resume it to check whether the problem remains.
These are Valve’s baseline troubleshooting steps for Steam Deck software problems. Its general guidance applies to LCD and OLED models. Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide and Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide do not identify one SteamOS version as the cause of resume-related freezing or audio loss.

2. Rule out third-party Desktop Mode apps
Temporarily exit or disable apps installed through Desktop Mode, especially add-ons that can affect games or SteamOS. Restart and test the same game again. Valve recommends isolating third-party applications when investigating application instability; this is a diagnostic step, not proof that an app is responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. If the built-in speakers are silent, check the audio output
Audio may be routed to a device other than the Deck’s speakers. Disconnect or disable Bluetooth, USB-C, and 3.5 mm audio devices, including a headset, dock, TV, or monitor connection. Switch to another output and then back to the default speakers. If sound still does not return, restart the Deck.

If the problem is specifically a Bluetooth device that will not reconnect, make sure Bluetooth is enabled and the device is in pairing mode. For a device that was paired before, forget it on the Deck and pair it again. Valve notes that some third-party audio devices may not work properly with SteamOS. These audio checks are described in its Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
4. Find out whether the issue is system-wide or game-specific
- One game freezes, while others resume normally: Check the game’s Steam Store page for requirements and its Deck Verified category and compatibility notes. For a Steam game that remains unstable, confirm it is updated, try the latest Proton compatibility tool when appropriate, and reduce graphics settings.
- Several games freeze or audio fails across the Deck: Focus first on SteamOS updates, a restart, third-party apps, and audio routing rather than treating it as a setting unique to one game.
- Only one audio device is silent: Test the default speakers or another output. If speakers work but a particular headset or Bluetooth device does not, investigate that connection rather than changing the game’s graphics settings.
Valve’s software troubleshooting guidance recommends checking compatibility, Proton, and graphics settings for game instability. If the issue persists, consult Steam Deck or SteamOS discussions or contact Steam Support.

5. Try Steam Deck Beta only after stable-channel basics
If instability or performance problems persist after updates and a restart, Valve suggests trying Steam Deck Beta. Find the option at Settings > System > Beta Participation. Beta software may include a relevant change, but enrolling is not a guaranteed fix for this particular resume symptom. Consider whether you are comfortable troubleshooting on a beta channel before switching.
6. Keep recovery options for broader, persistent problems
Recovery is a later escalation, not a first response to one game freezing after sleep. Valve distinguishes between options with different consequences:
Rank #3
| Recovery option | What Valve says it does | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Roll back to a previous OS version | Returns to a previous known-good OS while retaining user data. | When a broader, persistent system problem warrants trying an earlier OS version. |
| Repair SteamOS | Attempts to preserve games and personal content. | When system repair is warranted after less disruptive troubleshooting. |
| Re-image or factory reset | Clears local content. | Only after accounting for local data and deciding a destructive recovery is necessary. |
See Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guide for recovery details. Back up or otherwise account for local data before using an option that erases it.

If the problem continues, make a concise report with the details that help separate a game issue from an audio or system issue:
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Whether it affects one game or all games.
- Whether sound is missing only from the built-in speakers or also from headphones and other outputs.
- Whether Bluetooth, USB-C, the headset jack, a dock, TV, or monitor is connected.
- Whether third-party Desktop Mode tools are installed or were running.
- Whether the Deck is LCD or OLED, and which SteamOS version and channel it uses.
Valve’s support guides describe troubleshooting steps but do not establish a universal resume bug or a single guaranteed fix. Follow the outcome of each test rather than assuming every freeze or audio dropout has the same cause.
