STATUS_WAIT_2 with code 0x080070002 usually means that Windows Backup cannot find a file or folder in its saved backup paths. The same value is commonly written as 0x80070002; the extra leading zero does not change the underlying hexadecimal value. Remove the missing or moved path, rebuild the backup job with locations that exist, and verify that the destination drive is connected and writable. Only if that reset fails should you investigate Volume Shadow Copy, Windows files, or the disk.

What STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x080070002) means

NTLite Community’s 2023 error mapping associates 0x80070002 with FILE_NOT_FOUND, ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND, and the message “The system cannot find the file specified.” It also lists STATUS_WAIT_2 as a matching NTSTATUS label. In a backup job, that wording normally points to a source path or destination path that is no longer available, rather than to a mysterious “wait” operation.

The spelling 0x080070002 contains one extra zero after 0x. Windows and support pages may display either form, but they refer to the same numeric value, 0x80070002. A code shown as 0x80070003, by contrast, is a different path-not-found condition and should not be treated as identical.

A Microsoft Community support case dated January 24–25, 2025 illustrates the common cause: Windows 7 Backup running on Windows 11 still had Users\grste\Pictures selected even though that folder had been deleted. The backup failed because the saved selection pointed to a path that no longer existed.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Before changing the backup job

  • Write down the exact path shown in the error details. A drive letter, network share, or user-folder name can reveal which selection is stale.
  • Connect the disk or network location that normally contains the files. If it is unavailable, Windows can report the same missing-file condition even when the folder still exists elsewhere.
  • Sign in with an account that can read the source folders and write to the backup destination.
  • If an earlier backup is important, do not delete its folder. The procedure below turns off the old schedule and creates a new configuration; it does not require erasing existing backup data.

Fix the missing source path

1. Open the legacy Backup and Restore configuration

  1. Press Windows, type Control Panel, and open it.
  2. Choose System and Security, then Backup and Restore (Windows 7). Windows 11 retains this legacy panel even though the label refers to Windows 7.
  3. Choose Change settings for the existing backup, or open the option to set up a backup if no job is listed.

The newer Windows Settings backup page and the Control Panel utility are not interchangeable. The path that causes this error is generally stored in the legacy Backup and Restore job, so inspect that panel first.

2. Inspect every selected folder

  1. When the wizard asks what to back up, select the option that lets you choose folders instead of accepting an automatic selection.
  2. Expand the user profile, libraries, and computer locations. Look for the path named in the error and for folders that were recently renamed, moved, or deleted.
  3. Open File Explorer in a separate window and verify each selected folder. A folder that opens with “Location is not available” is not a valid source for this job.
  4. Clear the check box for a missing location. If the data was moved, select its new folder instead and confirm that the new path contains the files you expect.

Do not select a placeholder folder merely to make the wizard continue. The backup can complete only when the selected source exists at run time and remains readable for the account running the schedule.

3. Turn off the stale configuration and create a clean one

  1. Return to Backup and Restore (Windows 7) and choose Turn off schedule (the wording can appear as an option to stop or disable the current backup).
  2. Start Set up backup or Change settings again.
  3. Select only folders that currently exist, then save the new selection.
  4. Run the backup manually once. A successful test confirms that the saved source list no longer contains the missing path.

Rebuilding the job is preferable to repeatedly retrying a configuration that still contains the deleted folder. It preserves the old backup files while replacing the list of locations Windows tries to read.

Check the backup destination

A missing source is the most direct explanation for this code, but an unavailable destination can produce similar symptoms. In the destination step of the wizard:

  • Choose the intended external drive or network location rather than a drive letter that is not currently mounted.
  • Reconnect a USB drive before opening the wizard. If Windows assigns it a different drive letter, select the newly displayed letter.
  • In File Explorer, open the destination and create a small test file. Delete the test file afterward. This verifies that the drive is connected and writable under your account.
  • Check that the destination has enough free space for the selected folders. A full destination normally produces a different message, but correcting capacity now prevents a second failure after the path issue is fixed.
  • For a network destination, confirm that the computer is connected to the network and that the share opens without asking for credentials that the scheduled task cannot provide.

An external USB hard drive can serve as a clean destination when the previous target is missing or unreliable. It is a practical new target, not a guaranteed cure; the source selections and the drive’s ability to accept files still have to be validated.

If rebuilding the job does not work

Check Volume Shadow Copy

Backup and Restore may use Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to create a consistent snapshot. Microsoft’s historical guidance for backup and restore failures includes checking this service, although the available support material does not establish that VSS is required for every instance of this code.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Press Windows+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Volume Shadow Copy.
  3. With the backup drive connected, verify that the service is not disabled. If it is stopped, use Start, then retry the backup.
  4. If starting the service fails, note the exact Windows message and check Event Viewer before changing other services. Do not disable VSS or alter service dependencies simply to bypass the error.

Run Windows file and disk checks

Microsoft’s older backup guidance also points to system-file and disk-integrity checks. Use these after the path reset, not as the first response to a clearly stale folder.

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish. Restart if Windows requests it, then test the backup again.
  3. For a local volume that contains the source or destination, run chkdsk X: /scan, replacing X: with the correct drive letter. Confirm the letter in File Explorer first; checking the wrong volume does not diagnose the backup path.
  4. If either command reports errors it cannot repair, save the complete result and address that condition before repeatedly scheduling backups.

These checks can identify damaged Windows components or file-system problems, but they do not recreate a folder that was intentionally deleted. A path that no longer exists must still be removed or replaced in the backup selection.

Use Event Viewer to identify the failing path

  1. Press Windows+R, type eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the failed backup.
  3. Look for entries from backup, VSS, disk, or file-system components. Record the drive letter, UNC path, and timestamp rather than relying on the short code alone.
  4. Use that path to repeat the File Explorer check and remove only the unavailable item from the backup job.

When to replace the legacy workflow

If the recreated job uses existing folders, a writable destination, and a functioning VSS service yet continues to fail, the legacy Windows 7 Backup workflow may be the problem rather than one missing folder. The January 2025 Microsoft support response recommends considering a current backup alternative when repeated reconfiguration does not resolve the failure.

Choose an alternative according to what must be recoverable:

Approach What it changes Configuration impact New destination
Remove the invalid path and rerun the existing job Corrects a missing source selection Preserves the job framework; changes selected folders No
Turn off the old job and create a new one Replaces stale source and destination settings Creates a fresh Windows configuration; existing backup files can remain Optional
Use a new external USB drive Eliminates an unavailable or unwritable target Requires selecting the new drive and testing write access Yes, physical
Adopt a current backup method Moves away from the legacy Windows 7 workflow Requires learning and configuring a different recovery process Physical or cloud, depending on the method

Keep at least one backup copy separate from the computer. Before retiring the old job, verify that the replacement can actually restore a representative file; a job that reports completion is not useful if its destination cannot be read later.

Common situations and the right response

  • A former user folder was deleted: remove that folder from the selection, then rebuild the job. Do not recreate an empty folder unless you genuinely intend to back it up.
  • Pictures or Documents were moved: select the new location and check that the files are present under the account used by Backup and Restore.
  • The USB drive is disconnected: reconnect it, verify its current drive letter, test a file write, and select that drive again if necessary.
  • A network share is offline: restore network access and credentials first. A scheduled backup cannot read a share that is unavailable at run time.
  • The error appears after a clean path reset: inspect VSS, Event Viewer, system files, and the disk in that order. These checks target service or integrity problems rather than the original missing-folder cause.
  • The backup still fails after all checks: preserve the error details and consider moving to a current backup workflow instead of endlessly retrying the legacy job.
