1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows 11 says “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC” or “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC,” the recovery tool has finished its automatic checks without resolving the boot failure. The message is not a diagnosis of one specific fault. The safest response is to stay in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), protect your data, and escalate from reversible repairs to offline checks before considering Reset this PC or a reinstall.
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.” Its targets include damaged or missing system files, corrupted Boot Configuration Data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers and registry errors. When it fails, one of those problems may still be present—or the underlying issue may be storage hardware that software commands cannot repair.

What the Startup Repair failure means
Startup Repair runs from WinRE rather than from your normal Windows desktop. It examines boot-critical components and applies fixes that can be performed automatically. A failed attempt means only that this routine did not make Windows bootable; it does not prove that Windows is infected, that the drive is dead or that reinstalling is immediately necessary.
The remaining possibilities generally fall into four groups:
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Boot configuration: BCD entries or boot files point to the wrong partition, are missing or cannot be opened.
- System-file damage: Windows files are corrupted or incomplete, sometimes after an interrupted update or an unsafe shutdown.
- Update, driver or registry changes: A recent package, incompatible driver or registry state prevents startup.
- Storage visibility or hardware: WinRE cannot see the disk that contains Windows, or the disk has connection, controller or physical problems.
Do not keep selecting Startup Repair repeatedly as your only strategy. Once the automated routine has failed, use the targeted options below and record what each step reports.
Protect data and identify your recovery path
Before command-line repairs or a reset, disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks and external drives. Leave the keyboard, mouse and the recovery media connected. If Windows uses BitLocker, have the recovery key available: Microsoft says most WinRE options can require it. You may be asked for the key when opening System Restore, Command Prompt or Reset this PC.
Choose the least disruptive option that matches the event that preceded the failure. This table is a practical guide; it does not guarantee that any option will work.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment
Use the recovery screen already on the PC
- On the blue recovery screen, select Advanced options.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options again.
- Keep this menu open while you work through the options below. The relevant entries are Uninstall Updates, System Restore, Command Prompt and Reset this PC.
Use a Windows 11 installation USB when WinRE is unavailable
On another working PC, create official Windows 11 installation media on a USB flash drive. Start the affected computer from that USB using its firmware boot menu. At Windows Setup, choose Repair my PC rather than Install now; this opens WinRE, where the same Troubleshoot and Advanced options are available. The USB is recovery media, not a guaranteed repair, and boot-menu keys vary by computer manufacturer.
Remove a recent Windows update
If the first failed boot occurred immediately after Windows Update, remove the latest update before changing boot files.
- From WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Try the option for the latest quality update first. If the problem followed a major version change and that option is offered, use the feature-update option instead.
- Restart and test Windows. If it still fails, return to WinRE rather than repeatedly attempting normal startup.
For a pending package that the graphical option cannot remove, open Command Prompt. First determine the Windows volume letter as described in the disk-identification section. Then inspect pending packages with:
DISM /Image:<OS drive> /Get-packages
If an unfinished package is preventing startup, Microsoft documents reverting pending actions with:
Recommended Free Tools
DISM /Image:<OS drive> /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions
Replace <OS drive> with the letter WinRE assigned to the Windows volume, such as D:. Do not assume it is C:.
Try System Restore when a restore point exists
System Restore rolls system files, drivers, registry settings and other system configuration back to an earlier restore point while leaving personal files in place. It is appropriate when a driver, application or update preceded the failure and is less destructive than Reset this PC or a reinstall.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Choose an administrator account and enter its password if prompted.
- Select a restore point dated before the startup problem. Use Scan for affected programs when available to see which applications or drivers may be removed.
- Confirm the restore and allow the process to finish. Do not interrupt the computer during the rollback.
If no restore point is listed, move to the command-line and disk checks; do not create a new restore point from WinRE.
Check whether WinRE can see the Windows disk
A missing operating-system disk is a stop condition for ordinary boot-file repair. If the disk is absent, rebuilding BCD or running SFC against a guessed letter cannot solve the underlying visibility problem.
- In Advanced options, open Command Prompt.
- Enter
diskpart, then runlist disk. - Run
list volto display volumes and their letters, file systems and sizes. - Identify the volume that contains the
Windowsdirectory. You can test candidates with commands such asdir C:Windows, dir D:Windowsand so on, stopping when the directory is found. - Type
exitto leave DiskPart.
If the physical disk containing Windows does not appear in list disk, stop software boot repair. Microsoft directs users to the computer, storage or virtualization manufacturer in this situation. Check the drive connection, firmware storage settings and controller mode according to the manufacturer’s documentation, and consider drive failure. The exact hardware cause cannot be established from the Startup Repair message alone.
Inspect and rebuild the Boot Configuration Data
When the disk is visible and you know the Windows volume letter, inspect the boot entries before recreating anything. In Command Prompt, run:
bcdedit
Check that the Windows Boot Manager and Windows Boot Loader entries refer to the correct device, partition and Windows path. In WinRE, letters can differ from normal Windows, so compare the entries with the volume you identified using list vol.
Back up the existing BCD store
Create a backup before changing it:
mkdir C:tempbcdedit /export C:tempbcdbackup
If the export path is not available, use a writable volume that you can identify in list vol. The backup is useful if a later change needs to be reversed.
Rebuild entries when the store is missing or unreadable
If bcdedit cannot open the store, or the required entries are absent, Microsoft documents:
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Follow the prompt to search for Windows installations and add the installation that is on the correct volume. If boot files themselves need to be recreated and the system and Windows letters are known, Microsoft also documents:
bcdboot <OSDrive>:windows /s <SYSTEMdrive>: /f ALL
Replace both placeholders with actual letters. The system partition is not necessarily the same volume as the Windows partition. A wrong letter can place files on the wrong volume, so return to diskpart and list vol if you are uncertain.
Repair offline Windows files and the file system
Run System File Checker offline
After identifying the Windows volume, run SFC against that offline installation:
SFC /Scannow /OffBootDir=<OS drive>: /OffWinDir=<OS drive>:Windows
For example, if WinRE shows the Windows directory on D:, the command uses /OffBootDir=D: and /OffWinDir=D:Windows. Wait for the result and note whether files were repaired or whether SFC could not complete. A successful scan does not repair a missing disk or an incorrect BCD entry, so continue only with the branch that matches your evidence.
Check the disk with CHKDSK
When the symptoms or Startup Repair log suggest file-system corruption, run:
Rank #2
- Video Link to instructions and Free support VIA Amazon
- Great Support fast responce
- 15 plus years of experiance
- Key is included
chkdsk <OS drive>: /f /r
Use the confirmed Windows volume letter. The /f switch fixes logical file-system errors; /r searches for readable data in damaged areas and attempts recovery. Do not run the command against a guessed drive, and do not treat it as a substitute for replacing a drive that repeatedly disappears from firmware or DiskPart.
Read the Startup Repair log
Startup Repair records its findings in %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. From WinRE, the environment variable may not point to the offline installation, so open the file on the Windows volume you identified. For example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
notepad D:WindowsSystem32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt
Replace D: with the actual letter. Look for the test that failed, the file or driver named, and whether the action was completed. The log can distinguish a boot-file problem from a system-file or driver-related finding, but it cannot make a failing physical disk reliable.
Use Reset this PC or reinstall only after protecting files
Reset this PC
From WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Windows offers an option to keep personal files or remove everything. Keeping files still removes installed applications and resets settings, so record license information and application installers when possible. If the disk is encrypted, supply the BitLocker recovery key when requested.
Reinstall from installation media
A reinstall is the most disruptive path. A clean installation can remove personal files, applications, settings and OEM customizations. Copy important files to another drive before starting whenever the disk remains readable. OEM recovery media may contain hardware-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Windows installation media does not.
If the disk is missing in DiskPart, reinstalling is unlikely to help until the storage-visibility or hardware issue is addressed. If the disk is visible but cannot reliably read files, prioritize data protection or professional recovery before destructive installation steps.

Every graphical option returns to Automatic Repair
Use Command Prompt to identify the Windows volume, inspect BCD, run offline SFC and read Srttrail.txt. Repeating the same graphical Startup Repair action does not add a new repair method.
Commands report that Windows is on another drive
Close Command Prompt, return to diskpart and verify volume letters again. WinRE assigns letters independently of normal Windows, and the system partition, recovery partition and Windows partition can all have different letters or no letter.
The disk appears intermittently
Stop repeated writes and resets. An intermittent disk can indicate a connection, controller or drive problem. Check the manufacturer’s hardware guidance and copy data while the volume is accessible.
BitLocker blocks access
Do not bypass the prompt by guessing keys. Retrieve the BitLocker recovery key from the account or management system where it was saved, then resume the selected WinRE operation.
