When Starfield mods stop loading after a game or Creations update, first identify whether you have a stale mod, a load-order or duplicate-name problem, a Creations-menu connection/catalog failure, or a crash caused by added files. These symptoms need different fixes. Record your platform, game version, installation method, affected mods and first symptom, then test one change at a time.
The safest recovery is to preserve your current list, bring every Creation up to date, correct file-class ordering, isolate recently added mods in small groups, and only then consider deleting a catalog file, clearing console storage, or reinstalling the game.

Start by classifying the failure
Do not treat every warning as a mod conflict. A menu that never finishes loading can be a service or catalog problem even when the game itself is healthy. Missing items or quests usually point to a disabled, outdated or incorrectly ordered file. A crash after adding mods follows a separate PC recovery path. A load order that refuses to save can be caused by duplicate filenames rather than by an incompatible feature.

Write down whether you use in-game Creations or a third-party manager. Their files, controls and troubleshooting steps are not interchangeable.

Record a recoverable baseline before changing anything
Before disabling or deleting entries, capture screenshots of the complete load order and note the exact names and versions of affected mods. Also record the platform and store, the Starfield version shown by the launcher, whether the problem began immediately after a game or Creations update, and the first visible symptom. If a mod manager is involved, note its profile or deployment state.
Keep a copy of any configuration or catalog file you are about to remove. This is especially important on PC: the ContentCatalog.txt file can help identify installed Creations, so preserve it before trying the menu-repair procedure. A screenshot is not a complete backup, but it gives you a way to rebuild the previous state after a reset.
Update Creations and check duplicate filenames
Bethesda’s German load-order guidance says to make sure Creations are on their latest available version. An update can change the files a Creation provides, its dependencies, or the way the game indexes it. Check the update indicator for every affected Creation rather than assuming that an unchanged title means an unchanged file.
Find duplicate filenames
Two Creations can expose the same filename even when their displayed titles differ. Bethesda states that duplicate filenames can prevent you from saving the load order or from deleting or disabling Creations. Review the file names shown in the Creations list and in your manager, looking for repeated entries. Do not delete a file merely because its title resembles another one; verify which package owns it and consult the author’s current instructions.
Use Starfield’s file-class order
Bethesda’s documented sorting rule is:
- ESM files at the top.
- ESL files after the ESM group.
- ESP files last.
Official Creation Club content is placed at the beginning. Bethesda also explains that ESM and ESL files cannot be moved below the top group. Do not force an ESP ahead of ESM or ESL entries in an attempt to solve a conflict; that contradicts the game’s ordering rules. Within the permitted groups, follow the mod author’s dependency and patch instructions. There is no universal order that is guaranteed to work for every combination of Starfield mods.
Repair a Creations menu that is stuck loading
Use this branch when the menu itself hangs, spins indefinitely or fails before you can manage entries. It is different from a game that reaches the main menu but later crashes.

1. Give a connection problem a short chance to clear
Leave the menu open for a few minutes once. Bethesda’s French support guidance notes that a temporary connection issue can make the menu appear stuck. If it opens, immediately disable the most recently downloaded Creations first and restart the game. Recent additions are the highest-value suspects because the failure began after a known change.

- Open the Creations menu.
- Disable the most recently installed or updated entries first, recording each change.
- Restart Starfield rather than making a long series of changes in one session.
- Reopen the menu and test the game with the suspect entries disabled.
If the menu remains usable and the game starts, continue with the isolation procedure below. If the menu cannot be reached on PC, use the catalog procedure; console remedies have different consequences.
3. PC: rebuild the Creations catalog
Bethesda’s published PC recovery path is to preserve the catalog file and then remove it so Starfield can rebuild access to the menu:
- Close Starfield completely.
- In File Explorer, enter
%LocalAppData%Starfieldin the address bar. - Locate
ContentCatalog.txtand copy it to a safe folder. Do not skip this step; the copy can help identify which Creations were installed. - Remove the original
ContentCatalog.txtfrom the Starfield folder. - Start the game and allow the Creations system to rebuild the catalog.
This procedure targets access to the catalog; it is not a universal fix for an incompatible gameplay mod. Use the saved copy and your screenshots to restore or audit your list afterward.
4. Xbox: understand the reserved-space consequence
Bethesda’s console instructions use the Xbox reserved-space controls. Clearing that reserved space removes downloaded Creations. It can make the menu usable again, but it also means you must download the desired Creations again and reconstruct the load order. Confirm that you have recorded the list before clearing anything, then use the Xbox storage controls specified by Bethesda for Starfield.

5. PlayStation: expect a reinstall-based remedy
Bethesda’s PlayStation path involves reinstalling the game. Treat this as a substantial reset, not a quick toggle: verify that your saves are synchronized or otherwise protected, note the Creations you need to redownload, and allow time for the full installation and content downloads. The PlayStation remedy is not the same as deleting the PC catalog file or clearing Xbox reserved space.

Isolate a mod or interaction without guessing
Once the menu works, test the game with all optional Creations disabled. This establishes whether the base installation can reach the same location without third-party or added content. The following grouping method is a cautious diagnostic technique inferred from Bethesda’s advice to disable Creations and prioritize recent downloads; it is not a promise that every conflict can be identified automatically.
- Disable all suspect Creations and restart Starfield.
- Load the save or area that previously failed. If it still fails with the additions disabled, the cause may be outside those mods.
- If the clean test succeeds, enable a small group of related Creations and restart again. Keep the group small enough that you can identify its members.
- Repeat the same test. When the failure returns, divide that group and test each half.
- Continue reducing the failing group until you have one suspect file or a specific interaction between two entries.
- Check the suspect mod’s current description for required dependencies, patches and a version matching your Starfield build before changing its order or removing it.
Change only one variable between restarts whenever possible. Enabling several unrelated files, changing their order and updating the game simultaneously leaves no reliable clue about what fixed or caused the behavior.
Handle dependencies and load order conservatively
A mod that appears not to load may be functioning but waiting for a required master, framework or patch. Read the current instructions supplied by its author and verify that every dependency is installed and enabled. Do not assume that two files with similar names are interchangeable, and do not place an ESP before the ESM or ESL groups to satisfy an informal ordering tip.
When a patch is involved
Keep the file classes in Bethesda’s required order first. Then apply the patch author’s stated relationship to the files being patched. If the instructions conflict with the game’s enforced grouping, the game’s grouping takes precedence; seek an updated patch or author clarification rather than forcing an invalid position.
When a duplicate blocks management
Resolve the duplicate filename before repeatedly dragging entries or attempting to save. A failed save is not evidence that a different ordering template is needed. Identify the two packages, update them if updates exist, and remove or replace the redundant package according to its author’s instructions. Recheck that the remaining filename is unique before testing gameplay.
PC crashes after mods were added
Use this section for a crash during startup or play on PC that began after adding mods, not for a menu that merely spins. Bethesda’s PC crash guidance says to remove the mods, reinstall Starfield, and verify or repair the game files again. Because reinstalling is disruptive, preserve your screenshots, mod list and saves before beginning.

- Exit the game and your mod manager.
- Remove the added mods from the active profile or installation. Do not leave partially deployed files behind.
- Start Starfield without those mods. If it now reaches the previously failing point, you have a strong indication that the added files or their interaction triggered the crash.
- Reinstall Starfield using your store’s normal process if Bethesda’s recovery path is required.
- Run the platform’s verify or repair function after reinstalling.
- Launch once in the clean state before restoring any mod.
- Reintroduce current, compatible files in small groups, restarting between groups.
This is a later crash-recovery measure, not a guaranteed solution for every conflict or silent failure to load. If the unmodded game still crashes, continue troubleshooting the base installation, saves, drivers or platform rather than assuming a particular mod is responsible.
Using Vortex or another third-party manager
Players who install outside the in-game Creations interface need to distinguish manager behavior from Starfield’s own rules. Nexus Mods maintains a Starfield extension for Vortex, and its repository documents tool-specific management behavior. Consult the extension’s current documentation for deployment, profiles and discovery; implementation details can change, so do not apply an old version-specific instruction as a universal Starfield rule.
Before asking a manager to redeploy files, record the active profile and load order. Avoid applying an in-game Creations remedy, such as clearing console reserved space, to a PC installation managed by a tool. Conversely, deleting a PC catalog file will not repair a console’s reserved-space state.
Common failure branches
The menu opens, but one Creation is missing
Check its version, enabled state, dependencies and filename uniqueness. Then test it alone or with a small group. If another file supplies a required master, enabling only the visible add-on will not produce its content.
The game starts, but a feature disappears after an update
Compare the mod’s release version with the current Starfield version and look for an update or compatibility notice from its author. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that the title still appears in the menu.

Search for duplicate filenames first. Confirm that ESM entries remain in the top group, ESL entries follow ESM, and ESP entries remain last. If a file cannot move across groups, that is an enforced rule rather than proof that the menu is malfunctioning.
The menu is fixed, but the same crash returns
Separate catalog access from gameplay stability. Disable all additions, restart, and run the clean test. If the crash disappears, use group isolation; if it persists, follow the PC base-file verification path instead of repeatedly deleting catalog data.
A console reset removed the downloads
On Xbox, clearing reserved space removes downloaded Creations; on PlayStation, the documented remedy involves reinstalling. Re-download only after the base game launches, and restore entries in recorded groups so a newly failing item is identifiable.
What official guidance can and cannot tell you
Bethesda’s support articles establish the file-class order, the effect of duplicate filenames, the menu recovery options for PC, Xbox and PlayStation, and the PC crash path involving mod removal and file verification. They do not publish a current list of every third-party mod incompatible with the latest Starfield build, nor do they provide one conflict-free order for every possible combination.

User reports can suggest leads, but they are anecdotal and should not be treated as verified fixes. If an author has not updated a mod for your build, leaving it disabled is safer than forcing it into a load order that the game rejects.
Prevent the next update from becoming a mystery
- Keep a dated screenshot or text record of the working load order.
- Note which files are ESM, ESL and ESP so an update does not tempt you to cross the enforced groups.
- After a Starfield or Creations update, check every enabled Creation for a current version before loading a valuable save.
- Add or update one mod at a time, launching once between changes.
- Keep dependencies and compatibility patches together with the mod that requires them.
- Retain a copy of
ContentCatalog.txtbefore using the PC catalog reset. - For major console resets, verify your save synchronization and list of downloads first.
- Use the documentation for your actual manager rather than transferring instructions from in-game Creations or another platform.
That record turns a future failure into a reversible comparison: you can identify what changed, restore a clean baseline, and test the smallest possible set of files instead of rebuilding the entire installation blindly.
