One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchMost Star Fox “split-screen” problems come from using the wrong multiplayer route for the mode you want. These instructions apply to Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. Local Battle Mode, local campaign co-op, online Battle Mode, online GameShare, and local GameShare each have different setup and joining steps.
First ask three questions: Which Star Fox release and console are you using? Are you trying to play on one system or separate systems? Are you starting Battle Mode, campaign or Challenge co-op, or GameShare? If you are playing an older release, stop before following these instructions. For example, the Star Fox 64 3D instruction booklet covers Nintendo 3DS wireless multiplayer, not the current Switch 2 menus.

First identify the game and multiplayer mode
Nintendo’s current multiplayer instructions are for Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm the console and game before troubleshooting, then decide which of these experiences you are trying to start. Calling every failed join a “split-screen bug” hides the important difference between a controller that has not been paired, an invitation that was missed, and a nearby GameShare session that has not been selected.
| Mode | Systems used | What players do | How the second player joins | Common mix-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local Battle | One Switch 2 | Battle Mode with up to four players on one system; other participants can include CPU opponents. | Choose the number of players, then pair each controller when prompted. | Expecting a separate-system invitation instead of pairing a controller. |
| Local campaign or Challenge co-op | One Switch 2 | Co-operative mission play. | Select Co-op: Local and pair the additional controller. | Expecting two independently piloted ships from the Battle Mode setup. |
| Online Battle | Separate systems over the internet | Battle Mode with invited friends or other online players. | Accept the notification, or use the profile’s Invites list. | Looking under the GameShare invitation menu. |
| GameShare co-op through GameChat | Separate systems | Campaign or Challenge co-op. | Join a GameChat room, then accept the GameShare invitation from the C Menu. | Searching the ordinary Online Battle invite list. |
| Local GameShare Battle | Nearby Switch 2 systems | Battle Mode using GameShare rather than multiple controllers on one console. | Join the host’s nearby session from the GameShare icon on HOME. | Trying to join a one-console Local Battle lobby. |
These are separate flows. A player waiting for an invitation will not appear in a one-console Local Battle lobby, and a player pairing a controller will not join an online invitation. Start with the row that matches your intended setup.

Fix missing or broken local split-screen Battle Mode
Update the game before changing controllers
Nintendo says Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is delivered in a free game update. If Battle Mode → Local Battle is missing, or the split-screen option is not available, install the update before assuming the extra controller is faulty:
- On the Switch 2 HOME screen, highlight Star Fox without launching it.
- Press the + or − button.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet and allow the console to complete the update.
After the update finishes, start the game again and check Battle Mode. The update requirement and menu path are documented on Nintendo’s Star Fox product page. If the mode was already present, the update step does not by itself identify why a particular player failed to join; it simply confirms that the required split-screen feature is installed.
Start Local Battle in the correct order
- Open Battle Mode from the main menu.
- Select Local Battle.
- Set the number of players who will use that Switch 2.
- Pair every player’s controller when the game prompts you. A compatible extra Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controller can be used when another local player needs one.
- Continue only after all intended controllers show as ready.
- Have each player choose a pilot, then select the mission.
The console asks for the player count before controller pairing. That ordering matters: selecting one player and then waiting for another person to appear does not substitute for selecting the intended count. Likewise, choosing a pilot before the controller prompt is complete does not add a participant who has not been recognized.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Nintendo’s current support page says Local Battle can include up to four players on a single system. The page instructs each participant to pair a controller, so a second player who cannot join may be at the player-count or pairing step. That is a troubleshooting inference from the documented sequence, not a universal diagnosis for every failed join.
If the second player still does not appear
- Exit the current mode and start again at Battle Mode → Local Battle; do not try to join through an online or GameShare menu.
- Set the player count again, making sure it matches the number of people using that console.
- Pair controllers one at a time as prompted instead of skipping ahead.
- Confirm that every participant is choosing a pilot only after all controllers are ready.
- If Local Battle is still absent, verify that the software update completed rather than assuming a controller is defective.
- If another person is using a separate Switch 2, stop using this route and choose Local GameShare or Online Battle as appropriate; Local Battle is the one-system setup.
Buying an additional Joy-Con 2 is relevant only when another local participant needs a compatible controller. A second controller cannot repair an online invitation, a GameChat GameShare request, or a missing nearby GameShare session.
Set up local campaign or Challenge co-op
Campaign and Challenge co-op is not the same as two ships competing in split-screen Battle Mode. In this co-op arrangement, one player pilots and the other operates the gun. The roles explain why the second participant may not appear as another independently controllable ship.
- Open Campaign or Challenge Mode.
- Choose Co-op: Local.
- Follow the controller-pairing prompt for the second player.
- Continue once the game recognizes both players.
If you are looking for a second independently piloted ship, return to Battle Mode → Local Battle instead. Selecting the campaign co-op route will not create the Battle Mode split-screen setup. Conversely, selecting Local Battle when you intended to share pilot-and-gunner duties sends you into the wrong flow even if both controllers are working.
Fix an online Battle Mode invitation that was missed
Host instructions
- Open Battle Mode.
- Select Online Battle.
- Choose Invite Friends.
- Wait for the invited friend to join before starting matchmaking or a private game.
The host should remain in the invitation flow long enough for the friend to accept. Starting matchmaking or a private game first changes the timing and can leave the invited player looking at an invitation that is no longer the active step.
Guest instructions
Select Join from the invitation notification. If the notification disappeared or was overlooked:
- Open the HOME Menu.
- Select the user profile.
- Open Invites.
- Choose the Star Fox Online Play Invite.
- Select Join.
This invitation path is different from GameShare. Do not look for an Online Battle invite under See Invites to GameShare; that menu belongs to the GameShare co-op flow. Conversely, a GameShare request should not be diagnosed as missing merely because it is absent from the profile’s ordinary Online Play invite list.
Check online prerequisites
Nintendo states that online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Regional availability and service terms apply. Check those prerequisites on both sides of the session, but do not treat them as proof of a particular connection fault. They are requirements for online features, not a promise that they explain every invitation failure.

If the host and guest have the stated prerequisites and the documented invitation still fails, record whether the host could send the invite, whether the guest received a notification, whether the invite appeared under the profile’s Invites list, and what happened after Join. Those details separate a missing notification from a failure after acceptance.
Use GameShare co-op through GameChat
The documented online GameShare route is for Campaign or Challenge co-op. It is not Online Battle, and it does not turn the guest into a second independently piloted ship. The host is the pilot and the guest is the gunner.
Host: create the GameShare session
- Join a GameChat room.
- Open the desired Campaign or Challenge Mode.
- Select Co-op: GameShare.
- Choose the player to invite.
- Wait for that player to join before proceeding.
Guest: accept the GameShare invitation
- Open the C Menu.
- Select See Invites to GameShare.
- Choose Join GameShare.
The GameChat room is part of this documented route, so entering ordinary Online Battle first is not an equivalent shortcut. If the guest is trying to use the ordinary Online Battle invitation list, the GameShare request can appear to be missing because it is handled from the C Menu instead.
A compatible USB camera is required only for GameChat video features. Nintendo does not identify a camera as a fix for a player who cannot join, so do not add one to the troubleshooting setup unless video is the specific feature you want.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use local GameShare for Battle Mode
Local GameShare is a separate nearby-console feature. It is not the same as Local Battle on one Switch 2, where every player pairs a controller to the host system. It also is not the same as online GameShare through a GameChat room.
Host setup
- Open Battle Mode.
- Highlight GameShare.
- Set it to Local.
- Wait for nearby players to join.
Joining from another nearby Switch 2
- On the joining console’s HOME screen, select the GameShare icon.
- Choose Join GameShare.
- Select A Local User.
- Choose the host user.
- Join the nearby session found by the console.
If the host selected ordinary Local Battle, the joining player will not find that session through the GameShare icon. Conversely, selecting Local GameShare does not add the joining player as a controller on the host’s single-console split screen. The host’s selected route and the guest’s selected route must match.
Symptom-by-symptom checklist
“Local Battle” is not listed
Confirm that you are on Nintendo Switch 2, highlight Star Fox on HOME, and install the free software update through Software Update → Via the Internet. Then reopen the game and check Battle Mode → Local Battle. The current Nintendo product information specifically identifies the update as the way Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is provided.
The second local player cannot get into the match
Confirm that the host selected the correct number of players before the controller prompt. Pair the additional controller when prompted, wait until every intended controller is ready, and only then choose pilots and the mission. If the second participant is on another console, use Local GameShare or Online Battle instead of trying to pair that person into Local Battle.
The friend cannot find an Online Battle invitation
Have the host use Battle Mode → Online Battle → Invite Friends. Have the guest check the user profile’s Invites list if the notification was missed, then select the Star Fox Online Play Invite and Join. Do not use See Invites to GameShare for this route.
The GameShare invitation is not visible
For online campaign or Challenge co-op, confirm that both people joined a GameChat room. The host must select Co-op: GameShare and choose the player to invite. The guest must open the C Menu, select See Invites to GameShare, and then choose Join GameShare.
A nearby console cannot find the host
Confirm that the host opened Battle Mode, highlighted GameShare, set it to Local, and is waiting for nearby players. On the joining Switch 2, use the HOME GameShare icon, choose Join GameShare, select A Local User, and choose the host user. A host in ordinary Local Battle will not appear through this nearby-session route.

When a player cannot join: a mode-by-mode checklist
Use this order so that a correct setup is not mistaken for a connection fault:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify the route. Write down whether this is Local Battle, local co-op, Online Battle, online GameShare, or local GameShare.
- Check the console generation. The instructions in this guide are for Switch 2. Do not substitute Star Fox 64 3D wireless instructions.
- Match the join mechanism. Local modes use controller pairing; Online Battle uses an invitation or the profile’s Invites list; online GameShare uses GameChat and the C Menu; local GameShare uses the HOME GameShare icon.
- Verify the host’s menu state. The host must select the corresponding mode and wait at the documented invitation or nearby-session step.
- Check the software update. This is especially important when Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is missing.
- Check the online prerequisites when applicable. Internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online features, subject to regional availability and terms.
- Record the stopping point. Note whether the failure occurs before an invitation is sent, after a notification, during controller pairing, while searching for a nearby session, or after selecting Join.
That record is more useful than describing every failure as a “split-screen bug.” Nintendo’s public instructions provide setup flows, not a universal explanation for all reports of players being unable to join.
Do not apply older Star Fox multiplayer instructions to Switch 2
Star Fox releases do not share one multiplayer system. Nintendo’s 2012 Star Fox 64 3D instruction booklet describes wireless multiplayer for Nintendo 3DS. Its menus, controller assumptions, and joining process should not be used to diagnose Switch 2 Local Battle, Online Battle, or GameShare.
Before searching for a fix, write down the exact game title, console, and mode. A solution for a 3DS wireless match cannot restore a missing Switch 2 split-screen update, and a Switch 2 GameShare invitation cannot be accepted through an older game’s wireless menu.

When contacting Nintendo support or asking for help, include:
- The exact Star Fox release and console.
- Whether the session is one-console local play, nearby local GameShare, Online Battle, or online GameShare co-op.
- The host and guest roles.
- The game’s software version and whether the update was installed.
- The precise menu path already attempted.
- Whether the guest received a notification, found an invite under the profile, saw GameShare under the C Menu, or found a nearby session.
- The exact error message, if any.
- The point where the process stops.
This information separates a missing mode, a missed invitation, a controller-pairing issue, and a GameShare acceptance problem without assuming that one cause explains them all.
Frequently asked questions
Does Star Fox support four-player split-screen on one Switch 2?
Nintendo’s current product information says Local Battle can include up to four players on a single system. Start with Battle Mode → Local Battle, set the number of players, and pair each controller when prompted.
Is Local Battle the same as Local GameShare?
No. Local Battle uses one Switch 2 and pairs every participant’s controller to that system. Local GameShare uses nearby Switch 2 systems: the host sets GameShare to Local, while each joining console uses the HOME GameShare icon and Join GameShare.
Why can’t my friend join through the controller screen?
A friend on another console cannot join one-console Local Battle by pairing a controller. Use Online Battle for an internet session or Local GameShare for nearby systems. Controller pairing is the documented join method for local play on one console.
Where is a missed Online Battle invitation?
Open the HOME Menu, select the user profile, open Invites, choose the Star Fox Online Play Invite, and select Join. This is separate from the C Menu’s GameShare invitation list.
Where does an online GameShare invite appear?
Join the GameChat room first, open the C Menu, select See Invites to GameShare, and choose Join GameShare. The guest becomes the gunner while the host pilots.

Can I use GameShare for Campaign and Challenge co-op?
Yes. The documented online GameShare flow covers Campaign or Challenge co-op. The host selects Co-op: GameShare after joining GameChat and invites a player; the guest accepts from the C Menu.
Do I need a USB camera to let another player join?
No camera is identified as a multiplayer join requirement or fix. Nintendo mentions a compatible USB camera for GameChat video features, not for Local Battle, Online Battle invitations, or GameShare acceptance.

Do online players need Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo says online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Regional availability and service terms also apply. These prerequisites do not identify the cause of every individual connection failure.
Will buying another Joy-Con 2 fix an invitation problem?
No. An extra compatible Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controller is relevant when multiple people are playing Local Battle or local co-op on one console. It cannot repair Online Battle invitations or GameShare sessions between systems.
What if I am using Star Fox 64 3D?
Use the Nintendo 3DS game’s own instructions. The 2012 Star Fox 64 3D booklet describes wireless multiplayer for 3DS, not the Switch 2 Local Battle, Online Battle, or GameShare menus covered here.
What information should I collect before requesting help?
Record the release and console, mode, host and guest roles, software version, update status, exact menu path, notification or invite visibility, error message, and point where joining stops. Those details show whether the problem is a missing mode, controller pairing, an invitation, or GameShare acceptance.

The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the mode: pair controllers for one-console Local Battle or local co-op, use the profile’s Invites list for Online Battle, use GameChat and the C Menu for online GameShare, and use the HOME GameShare icon for nearby Local GameShare. If Local Battle is missing, install the free update. If the documented flow still fails, record the exact console, mode, roles, menu step, version, and error instead of assuming every report has the same cause.
