To fix a stalled or uneven line in Substructure, trace the chain backward from its final product until you find the first handoff that is empty or full. An empty input usually means an upstream extraction, recipe, power, routing, storage, elevator, or environmental problem. A full output usually means the next belt, machine, container, or platform cannot accept more items. Then verify every mandatory ingredient—including fluids—check transport between cavern layers, account for light and other environmental conditions, and slow belt-converter feeds with a loop or split lanes when items pass too quickly.
What a stalled line looks like in Substructure
Substructure is a forthcoming PC automation game set on a rogue planet. Its factories span cavernous layers, with conveyors, robotic arms, elevators, and programmable platforms moving resources, seeds, fuel, and even factory infrastructure. Agriculture feeds manufacturing and research, while light, humidity, heat, and other conditions can alter what resources and plants produce. That combination means a machine that appears broken may actually be waiting on transport, a companion ingredient, daylight, or room downstream.

A stalled line has stopped making progress. A machine may be idle, an input belt may be empty, or an output may remain occupied. An unbalanced line still moves items, but one section is continually starved while another backs up. Both problems are best solved by locating the first failed handoff rather than adding machines immediately.

- Inspect the final output. Confirm that the last machine can place its product somewhere. Check the outgoing belt, receiving machine, chest, platform, or other destination. If the output is full, the fault is downstream of the machine making it.
- Move one handoff upstream. Look at the input side of the final machine. An empty input points toward extraction, recipe selection, a missing ingredient, storage, routing, or delivery. A full input means the machine may be unable to process or discharge what it already received.
- Follow each required ingredient separately. Do not stop when one ingredient arrives. A recipe can accept alternative items in a variable-input slot while still requiring other specific items or fluids. Check every input that the recipe lists.
- Check the source machine and its supply. If the belt is empty, verify that the extractor, farm, or preceding processor is operating and has the required feed. A healthy-looking belt segment does not prove that the source is producing continuously.
- Inspect storage and routing junctions. A container or platform that cannot unload can make an upstream machine appear starved. Conversely, an overfilled container can stop a line even when extraction and processing are working.
- Trace every change of level. Follow the material through each elevator and programmable platform. A production chain can be correct on one layer and still fail because the cross-layer handoff does not deliver, receive, or unload.
- Watch the line through a complete cycle. After repairing the first failed handoff, let the chain run long enough for material to reach both ends. Only then decide whether capacity, speed, or machine count needs adjustment.
The key distinction is simple: an empty input is an upstream problem; a full output is a downstream problem. Keep moving in that direction until you find the first break, not the most visibly idle machine.
Read the symptom at the first failed handoff
| What you observe | Most useful place to inspect next | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A machine has no item on an input belt | The preceding producer, storage point, or transport segment | Production, routing, recipe choice, and whether an elevator or platform delivered the item |
| A machine has one ingredient but remains idle | Every other ingredient connection | Mandatory item and fluid inputs; an accepted alternative does not replace a required companion input |
| The machine’s output remains full | The next belt, machine, container, or platform | Whether the destination can accept and move the product |
| Items pass a belt converter without being transformed | The converter and the speed or shape of its feed | Whether the passing rate is too high; test a loop or split lanes |
| One layer runs while the next layer starves | The elevator or programmable platform between them | Loading, destination, unloading, and the receiving belt or machine |
| Plant output changes during a cycle | The growing area and its environmental conditions | Light, humidity, heat, and whether sunlight or darkness changed production speed |
Check recipes completely, including variable inputs and fluids
Alternative ingredients are not optional requirements
The developer diary describes variable-input recipes that can accept one of several alternative items. That flexibility applies to the variable slot only. Other listed inputs remain mandatory. A machine can therefore show a valid item on its alternative-input belt and still stop because a required second item or fluid is absent.
When diagnosing an idle recipe, make a written or visual inventory of every input shown by the recipe. Mark each one as arriving, waiting in storage, or absent. Do not infer that a running belt means the recipe is fully supplied: the belt may carry an allowed alternative while a companion line is empty.
Mixed belts can be valid, but verify what the recipe accepts
Mixed input belts are supported for variable-input recipes. Use the recipe’s accepted alternatives as the authority rather than assuming that any item on the belt will work. If production stops, separate the questions: is an acceptable alternative arriving, and are all mandatory companion inputs arriving at the same time?
Fluids deserve their own inspection
Fluids are easy to overlook because a solid-item belt may look healthy. Check the fluid connection, its source, and the delivery path whenever the recipe lists a fluid. A missing fluid is sufficient to stop a machine even when every visible item belt is full.

Fix belt-converter throughput before adding another converter
Belt converters are belt-side machines that transform items as those items pass by. They do not use ordinary input and output slots. Their operation is therefore rate-sensitive: if items move past faster than the converter can process them, some or all of the feed can continue unconverted.
How to recognize a converter-rate problem
- The belt is continuously occupied, but the converted item appears intermittently or not at all.
- The converter works when the upstream supply is interrupted, then fails again when the belt fills.
- Downstream machines alternate between short bursts of supply and starvation even though the source is producing.
These symptoms indicate a timing problem rather than a missing recipe ingredient. Watch whether items physically pass the converter before it can act on them.

Use a loop to give the converter more opportunities
A looped belt system sends items around a circuit so the converter can process passing items over repeated passes. The loop is useful when you have a single feed and enough belt capacity to circulate material. Monitor the return path so a full loop does not create a new downstream blockage.
Split a fast belt into slower lanes
Another option is to divide a faster belt into multiple slower lanes. Each lane presents items at a lower passing rate, giving the converter time to transform them. Recombine or route the lanes only after confirming that the converter is processing consistently. Splitting improves converter utilization but adds junctions and more segments to inspect during future troubleshooting.
Repair elevators and programmable platforms between layers
Substructure’s production spaces are layered rather than flat. The official game description emphasizes optimizing interactions between layers, and the preview describes elevators carrying materials between levels. A line can therefore be balanced on one floor while the receiving floor is completely starved.

Trace a cross-layer handoff end to end
- Identify the exact source belt or storage point that should load the elevator or programmable platform.
- Confirm that the transport device is assigned to the intended destination layer rather than another route.
- Check that it can unload at the destination and that the receiving belt, machine, or container has room.
- Inspect the first belt segment after unloading. A successful arrival that cannot leave the platform still blocks the handoff.
- Watch more than one trip. A single delivered batch can hide an intermittent routing or capacity problem.
Choose where to process with the transport cost in mind
Centralizing processing on one layer makes recipes and storage easier to supervise, but every remote input and output depends on elevators or platforms and longer transport routes. Local processing shortens belts and reduces cross-layer handoffs, but it can require duplicate machines and duplicate input deliveries. Neither layout is universally correct; choose based on which handoffs are hardest to keep reliable.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Account for light, humidity, heat, and plant timing
Agriculture is part of the industrial chain rather than a separate activity. The official description says resources and plants can depend on light, humidity, heat, and other conditions. The September 2026 preview specifically reports that sunlight speeds plant production while darkness slows it.
Separate a recipe fault from an environmental slowdown
If a plant line is fast in one period and slow in another without any recipe or belt change, inspect the growing area’s conditions before rebuilding machines. Darkness can reduce production speed without changing the recipe. A slower farm then starves processors downstream, creating what looks like a belt imbalance.
Plan buffers around timing changes
When a plant’s output varies with light or another condition, a small buffer between farming and manufacturing can absorb the change. Size and placement should be based on observed behavior in your own facility; no official production ratios are published. Keep the buffer visible so it does not conceal a genuine blockage.
Check conditions at the source, not only at the consumer
A downstream machine cannot compensate for a farm operating below its expected rate. Inspect the plant’s local light, humidity, and heat conditions, then follow the harvested material through storage and transport. An environmental change and an elevator delay can occur together, so use the backward first-failed-handoff method rather than assuming one cause.

Choose a layout that matches the bottleneck
| Decision | Strength | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centralized processing | Simpler recipe supervision and storage | Greater dependence on elevators and long routes between layers | Chains whose cross-layer transport is reliable and easy to monitor |
| Local processing | Shorter belts and fewer cross-layer handoffs | May duplicate machines and input deliveries | Chains where transport between layers is the recurring failure point |
| Single-lane transport | Easier to read and inspect | A belt converter may not process items fast enough | Feeds already slow enough for the converter’s passing rate |
| Split or looped transport | Slower passes can improve converter utilization | More routing and segments to monitor | Fast feeds that visibly outrun a belt converter |
Change one structural decision at a time. Moving processing and splitting belts simultaneously makes it difficult to tell which change fixed the line or introduced a new blockage.
Use a controlled recovery sequence
Once you have found the first failed handoff, restore flow in a controlled order. The goal is to establish a stable baseline before increasing supply.
- Pause expansion. Do not add extractors, farms, machines, or faster feeds while the existing chain is stopped.
- Clear the first blockage. Restore the missing delivery, free the blocked output, reconnect the required input, or correct the layer destination.
- Let the entire chain settle. Watch material reach the final output and observe at least one upstream-to-downstream cycle.
- Measure the new failure point visually. Note whether the line now starves, backs up, or stays even. The bottleneck may move after the first repair.
- Adjust transport before duplicating machines. For a belt converter, try a loop or split lanes. For a cross-layer issue, shorten the route or move processing locally.
- Add capacity only after stable flow. Increase supply or machine count in small changes, checking the first failed handoff after each change.
Scaling an unstable line amplifies its imbalance. Extra upstream production can turn a shortage into a full belt or container, while extra downstream machines can deepen starvation if the farm, elevator, or converter remains the true limit.
Targeted fixes for common failure patterns
One machine is starved while another is backed up
Find the boundary between the backed-up section and the starved section. Inspect the transport segment, junction, elevator, or platform at that boundary. If the source side is full and the destination side is empty, the handoff—not either machine’s nominal capacity—is the first suspect.
Recommended Free Tools
The line stops after a recipe change
Recheck every input in the new recipe, including fluids and mandatory companion items. A variable-input recipe may accept a different solid while still waiting for an unchanged required input.
Best Value
The converter works intermittently
Observe item speed at the converter. If items pass too quickly, build a loop or split the feed into slower lanes. Verify downstream capacity after the change so improved conversion does not create a full output.
Only one layer is affected
Inspect the elevator or programmable platform and both receiving points. Confirm loading, destination assignment, unloading, and the first belt after arrival. A healthy producer and idle consumer on separate layers strongly suggests a cross-layer handoff to investigate.
Plant-fed machines slow down at certain times
Check light first, then humidity, heat, and other local conditions. Sunlight is reported to speed plant production and darkness to slow it. Treat the resulting variation as an input-rate change and use a visible buffer rather than assuming the processor has failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuild lines that are easier to troubleshoot
- Keep handoffs visible. Leave enough access to see whether belts, storage points, elevators, and platforms are loading and unloading.
- Group related processing. Clustering machines reduces the number of long routes you must follow when a chain stops.
- Give each mandatory input a distinct inspection point. This makes a missing fluid or companion item obvious even when an alternative solid is arriving.
- Place buffers where rates change. Farming affected by light and belt converters affected by passing speed are natural places to observe and absorb variation.
- Label or otherwise distinguish layer routes. Cross-layer failures are easier to isolate when each elevator or platform has a clearly understood source and destination.
- Test after every structural change. Run the chain before adding another change so you know which intervention altered the flow.
What is not yet established about production ratios
No published numeric production ratios or official machine-count troubleshooting chart is available in the material describing the game. Do not design around invented belt speeds, crop yields, converter rates, or fixed machine-to-machine ratios. Use observed flow in your current build, preserve the environmental and transport caveats above, and treat any future in-game or developer-published numbers as version- and condition-specific.
The developers have described logistical friction as intentional. Stu Taylor, co-founder of Dubious Design, said, “You need friction for it to be interesting.” Mike Donoghue, also a co-founder, described the satisfaction of solving problems and said the games work best when they are capable of maddening the player. In practical terms, a stalled line is an invitation to isolate one handoff, restore it, and then make the next design decision with better information—not a reason to rebuild the whole factory at once.
