SSIS error 0x80004005 is a generic failure code, not a diagnosis. The actionable cause is usually in the OLE DB records that follow it: a SQL Server Agent connection problem, an OLE DB provider/editor incompatibility, or data-flow corruption caused by memory pressure. Capture the complete error text, identify where the package runs, and then apply the matching branch below.
What SSIS 0x80004005 means
SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) commonly reports this HRESULT as DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. The same value can represent very different failures. Microsoft documents examples including “Protocol error in TDS stream,” “Communication link failure,” and “TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.” Other cases occur while an OLE DB editor lists identifiers, or after a data-flow buffer is written to disk under low-memory conditions.

Therefore, reinstalling SSIS or changing a random connection string is unlikely to be a reliable first move. The text after 0x80004005, the task that failed, the provider name, and the execution host determine which repair is appropriate.
Capture the complete error chain first
Do not work from a dialog that shows only the hexadecimal code. Save the full execution output from the failing run and record the following details:

- The package name, task name, and connection manager named in the error.
- Every OLE DB record, including the provider-specific message after
DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. - The provider and driver name selected by the connection manager.
- The SQL Server and SSIS runtime versions, including whether the deployment is a legacy SQL Server 2005/2008 installation or a current release.
- Whether the package succeeds when started interactively but fails as a SQL Server Agent job.
- Whether the failure occurs during connection testing, metadata editing, or execution of a data-flow task.
Run the package once in the environment where it normally fails, then run the same package interactively if that is safe. A difference between those two runs is often more useful than the HRESULT itself.

Fix packages that fail only in SQL Server Agent
A package can work from SSDT, DTExec, or another interactive launch and still fail under SQL Server Agent because the connection is opened and reused differently. Microsoft’s current guidance for the documented Agent failure is to retain the same connection for the affected task.
Set RetainSameConnection in SSMS
- Open SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the instance that owns the job.
- Expand SQL Server Agent, then expand Jobs and open the failing job’s properties.
- Select Steps, choose the step that runs the SSIS package, and click Edit.
- Open the step’s Configuration page and select Connection Managers.
- Select the connection manager associated with the error. Set its
RetainSameConnectionproperty fromFalsetoTrue. - Save the job, run the step again, and inspect the complete history output rather than only the final status.
The property can also be changed directly on the package’s connection manager in the SSIS designer. Make the change on the connection that the failing task actually uses; changing an unused manager will not affect the run.

Interpret the result
- If the job now succeeds, the failure was related to connection reuse or lifetime in the Agent execution context. Keep the setting only for the connection that needs it and document the reason.
- If the message still reports a TDS protocol error, a communication-link failure, or a remote host closing the TCP connection, continue investigating SQL Server reachability, network interruptions, and the provider-specific record.
RetainSameConnectionaddresses the documented SSIS connection-lifetime scenario; it does not repair a broken network path. - If the package fails in both Agent and interactive execution, move to the provider/editor or memory branches instead of treating Agent as the sole cause.
Handle an OLE DB provider or editor failure
Microsoft notes that “The DTS_E_OLEDBERROR error code has many causes.” One documented SQL Server 2008 case occurs when an OLE DB provider does not implement DBPROP_IDENTIFIERCASE. SSIS can fail while the editor attempts to list identifiers, even though the underlying database is reachable.
Confirm that this is the identifier-property case
- Record the provider name and the exact operation that triggers the error. This branch is most relevant when opening an OLE DB source or destination editor, listing tables, or retrieving metadata.
- Check the installed SQL Server and SSIS runtime version. The documented fix applies to a legacy SQL Server 2008 scenario, not automatically to every current provider.
- Look in the detailed error records for wording about identifier properties, unsupported metadata, or failure while enumerating objects. Do not infer this cause from the hexadecimal code alone.
- Check the cumulative-update level for that SQL Server 2008 installation against Microsoft’s support article for the fix. Apply the applicable update through your normal change-control process.
- Restart the affected design or execution components as required by the update, reopen the package, and repeat the metadata operation.
After the documented servicing change, SSIS ignores failure of the unsupported property and uses a default identifier value. That behavior is a compatibility workaround, not proof that every provider problem is solved. A different provider error, authentication failure, inaccessible object, or malformed query needs its own investigation.
Do not generalize the legacy fix
The DBPROP_IDENTIFIERCASE case is tied to a specific provider/runtime combination. On a newer SQL Server or SSIS deployment, first verify that the same provider and error record are present and that the vendor supports the installed driver. Installing an old cumulative update on an unrelated version is not a safe substitute for identifying the actual provider failure.

Diagnose low-memory data-flow failures
Memory pressure can make a data-flow task report misleading secondary errors. Microsoft explains that, after a low-memory notification, the data-flow engine can write buffers to disk temporarily. In affected legacy scenarios, values may be replaced with NULL or zero, producing invalid casts, overflows, duplicate-key violations, or other constraint errors that eventually surface as 0x80004005.
Look for the characteristic pattern
- The same package sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails depending on system load.
- The first visible error is a conversion, overflow, duplicate-key, NULL, or zero-value problem rather than a clear connection refusal.
- The failure appears during a large or parallel data flow and disappears when the workload is smaller.
- A temporary file named
DTS.tmpgrows under the data-flow task’sBufferTempStoragePath.
A growing DTS.tmp file is evidence that buffers are spilling to disk. It does not by itself prove that every bad value came from memory pressure, so correlate the file activity with the failing task and timestamps.
Reduce contention in a controlled order
- Check available physical memory while the package runs, including the SQL Server instance and the machine executing SSIS. Record whether another application is consuming memory at the same time.
- If SSIS and SQL Server share a computer, review SQL Server’s
max server memorysetting. Lowering it can leave room for the SSIS runtime, but make the change only after considering the database workload and your normal capacity controls. - Stop or reschedule memory-heavy applications during the package window.
- Run SSIS on a separate computer from the SQL Server instance when the current host cannot provide predictable memory headroom.
- Change parallel data-flow work to serial execution where practical. Fewer simultaneous buffers reduce peak memory demand, although elapsed time may increase.
- Rerun the package and compare the detailed data errors, memory behavior, and
DTS.tmpactivity.
Adding physical memory is another documented mitigation when the workload genuinely exceeds the host’s capacity. These actions address resource pressure; they do not correct a genuinely bad cast, duplicate key in the source data, or invalid destination constraint. If the same row fails under low-load conditions, inspect the data and metadata separately.

Separate a real data error from a memory symptom
Once memory pressure has been reduced, isolate the data-flow component that reports the first invalid value. Use a smaller source range or a staging destination, and record the column, row, and conversion involved. Verify that source and destination data types, lengths, precision, scale, and NULLability agree. A duplicate-key or overflow that remains reproducible with ample memory is a data or schema issue, even if the original run also contained 0x80004005.
Do not “fix” corrupted-looking NULL or zero values by replacing them blindly in a transformation. First establish whether they were present in the source, introduced by a conversion, or produced during buffer pressure. Changing values can hide the underlying failure and create incorrect loads.
When the common branches do not fit
If the complete OLE DB record points to another provider-specific condition, keep the investigation narrow:

- Test the named connection manager independently from the data-flow task.
- Confirm that the account used by the execution host has access to the server, database, objects, and required permissions.
- Check that the provider selected by the package is installed in the bitness used by the SSIS runtime. A package launched from a 32-bit designer can behave differently from a 64-bit Agent execution, so record which host actually ran it.
- Compare the package’s configuration and parameter values between interactive and Agent runs. An empty server name, database, or credential can produce a generic OLE DB error.
- Review the first failure in the chain. Later “task failed” messages are often consequences, not causes.
These checks do not replace the provider’s own diagnostic message. If the error names a database object, authentication mechanism, network endpoint, or SQL statement, resolve that named issue before changing SSIS buffer or connection-lifetime settings.
Verify the repair and document it
- Run the smallest safe test that exercises the same connection and task.
- Run the complete package in its normal execution context, including SQL Server Agent if that is where production runs occur.
- Confirm that the detailed OLE DB records no longer contain the original message and that row counts, constraints, and destination values are correct.
- Repeat the run under a representative workload. A one-time success during a quiet period does not prove that low-memory pressure is gone.
- Record the runtime version, provider, changed property, cumulative-update level, memory conditions, and test result so a future deployment can reproduce the working configuration.
Because 0x80004005 is generic, the durable fix is the one that matches the accompanying record and execution conditions. Treat a bare “package failed” status as incomplete evidence and preserve the full chain for the next diagnosis.
