Start by separating the symptom: a launcher that will not open, a game that fails immediately, a crash during play, or uneven frame pacing require different checks. Then compare your PC with RSI’s published CIG-game requirements, confirm the installation has suitable SSD space, apply only low-risk general PC checks, and send persistent or reproducible failures to RSI with useful system evidence. RSI’s requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, includes Squadron 42 under its general CIG-game requirements; it does not establish a Squadron 42-specific crash or stutter cure.
First, identify exactly what is failing
“Squadron 42 crashes” can describe several different failures. Write down which one you have before changing anything:

- Launcher failure: the RSI Launcher does not open, closes immediately, or never reaches its sign-in or game-selection screen.
- Launch failure: the launcher opens, but the game does not start, returns to the launcher, or stops with an error after you select Play.
- In-game crash: the game starts and then closes, freezes, or returns to Windows during a menu, loading screen, or session.
- Stuttering or poor frame pacing: the game remains running, but movement, camera turns, or loading produces repeated hitches rather than a complete crash.
Record the exact error text, the point at which it appears, whether the problem happens every time, and anything that changed immediately beforehand. A recent Windows update, graphics-driver update, game update, or hardware change is useful context. These notes are suggestions for a clearer report, not a claim that RSI requires a particular diagnostic format.

RSI’s requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, says its requirements cover CIG games including Squadron 42. The page lists these minimum platform and hardware conditions:

These are thresholds, not a promise of a particular frame rate, loading time, or crash-free experience. Meeting them does not prove that a Squadron 42-specific defect is absent, and falling below one does not identify the exact cause of a failure. It does tell you whether the machine is outside the conditions RSI publishes for its CIG games.
RSI says it does not currently support Linux or macOS. If you are trying to run the game on either operating system, switching graphics settings or reinstalling files is not a supported-PC troubleshooting path; use a supported Windows installation instead.
Use Windows’ built-in information tools
RSI’s requirements page points readers to DXDiag or System Information for inspecting a PC. To gather the details without installing another diagnostic utility:
- Press the Windows key, type dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Review the System tab for Windows version, processor and memory, then the Display tab for the graphics adapter and display-driver information.
- For a broader inventory, press the Windows key, type System Information, and open the Microsoft utility. Note the operating-system type, processor, installed physical memory and system model.
- Open File Explorer and inspect the drive where the RSI Launcher and game files are installed. Record the drive’s total capacity, free space and whether Windows identifies it as an SSD.
- Save the model names and numbers exactly as Windows reports them. A support agent can use those details more reliably than a description such as “a gaming PC.”
RSI points people seeking hardware advice to its Spectrum hardware forum. Use that kind of discussion for compatibility questions, but treat the published requirements as the baseline that matters for this troubleshooting decision.
Verify storage before changing software
RSI requires a 150+ GB SSD for its stated CIG-game requirements. Its storage guidance also recommends an NTFS-formatted drive with at least 100 GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, plus an additional 10 GB of SSD space for the pagefile. That wording refers to the launcher and Star Citizen; it does not provide a separate Squadron 42 installation-size estimate. Do not turn the 100 GB recommendation into a claimed game-size figure.

Check the actual target drive rather than another disk in the computer. A machine can have a large hard drive while the launcher is installed on a nearly full or slower system SSD. If free space is below RSI’s stated recommendation, make space on the same NTFS SSD or select a suitable drive before attempting repeated installs. Keep the pagefile-space recommendation in mind when calculating usable headroom; an installation that barely fits can leave Windows without the additional space RSI describes.
If you are considering an internal SSD, first confirm the drive interface supported by the motherboard, the available connector or slot, the case or laptop clearance, and whether your Windows edition and installation layout can use it. A purchase is justified only when storage capacity, drive type or free space is the actual limitation; an SSD is not a universal crash remedy.
Low-risk checks for a failed launch
The following checks come from general PC-game guidance published by Steam. Steam presents them for games generally, not as Squadron 42-specific fixes, so apply them only when they match your installation and symptom.
Update Windows and device drivers
Install available Windows updates and current drivers for the graphics adapter and other relevant devices. A driver update can change behavior in either direction, so record the driver version and the date of the change in your notes. Do not describe this step as an RSI-prescribed solution; it is a general compatibility check recommended in Steam’s PC launch guidance.
Temporarily close non-essential software
Close applications you do not need while testing. The purpose is to check whether another program is conflicting with the launcher or game, not to make a permanent security or workflow change. Test one controlled launch after closing the non-essential software and note whether the symptom changes. If it does not, restore your normal applications rather than leaving unrelated programs disabled indefinitely.

Verify files when your platform provides that function
Steam’s general article recommends verifying game files for games that do not run after launch. Use that process only if your Squadron 42 installation is actually managed through Steam and Steam presents a verification option for it. If you use a different launcher, do not substitute Steam’s instructions or assume that a Steam file check applies. Verification can detect an incomplete or altered download, but the general guidance does not establish it as a Squadron 42-specific cure.

The RSI Launcher will not open
- Confirm the PC is running supported 64-bit Windows and that the launcher’s drive has the free space RSI describes.
- Close non-essential applications and attempt one controlled launch, noting whether the launcher produces an error or simply exits.
- Check whether Windows or device drivers changed immediately before the failure. Include that timing in a support report.
- If the launcher still fails, stop repeating reinstalls without new evidence. Submit the observed error, Windows details, processor and graphics information, memory, storage location and reproducibility to RSI support.
Nothing in the retrieved official material establishes a particular cache deletion, registry edit, security exclusion or launcher command as a Squadron 42 fix. Avoid treating unverified “repair” recipes as official procedures.
The launcher opens but the game does not start
First determine whether the game never creates a window, opens briefly and closes, or returns an explicit error. Compare the PC against the requirements table, check the SSD and free-space conditions, update Windows and drivers, and use platform file verification only when the installation platform supports it. Each result narrows the report; none proves a game-specific defect has been repaired.
If the game was recently updated, note the update date and whether the failure began immediately afterward. If the same account and installation fail consistently while the machine otherwise meets the published baseline, escalate rather than repeatedly changing unrelated system settings.
The game crashes during play
Record where the crash occurs: a particular loading transition, a menu, a repeatable action, or an apparently random point. Note whether Windows remains responsive and whether an error dialog appears. Check the requirements and storage conditions once, then perform the low-risk Windows, driver and non-essential-software checks. A repeatable crash with a clear trigger is especially useful to report through RSI’s official channels because it can be described and, where applicable, reproduced by others.

Do not infer that a crash is caused by RAM, the SSD, a BIOS setting or antivirus software solely because an internet post associates those components with games. The available official material does not establish BIOS changes, registry edits, broad security exclusions or disabling security protection as Squadron 42 remedies.
The game runs but stutters
Stuttering is a frame-pacing symptom, not the same thing as a crash. Note whether the hitching occurs during camera movement, traversal, loading, menus or a particular repeatable event. Record whether it is constant or began after a software or game update. Check that the system meets RSI’s CPU, GPU-memory, RAM and SSD thresholds, but do not present those thresholds as a performance benchmark.
Close non-essential applications for a controlled comparison and ensure Windows and graphics drivers are current, following the limits of the general Steam guidance. If the behavior remains, use RSI’s Public Telemetry to view performance context from community machines where relevant. Telemetry can show how performance looks across community hardware; it is context, not proof that your exact configuration has a known fix.
A RAM or SSD upgrade is worth considering only when your machine is below RSI’s published minimum or storage conditions are the bottleneck. Before buying, verify motherboard memory slots and supported capacity, the operating system, SSD interface, available physical space and whether the existing component is actually limiting the symptom. RSI’s official material does not identify a preferred brand or model and does not promise that an upgrade will eliminate stutter.
Collect evidence before contacting RSI
A concise, reproducible report is more useful than a list of unrelated tweaks. Assemble:

- The symptom category: launcher, launch, in-game crash or stutter.
- The exact error text, including punctuation or numeric codes.
- The sequence of actions that triggers the problem and whether it reproduces every time.
- Windows edition and 64-bit status.
- CPU model and confirmation of AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support.
- Graphics-card model, DirectX capability and graphics-memory amount.
- Installed system RAM.
- SSD model or type, installation drive, total capacity and free space.
- Recent Windows, driver, launcher, game or hardware changes.
- Whether closing non-essential applications, updating software or verifying files changed the result.
DXDiag and System Information provide the machine details RSI’s requirements page suggests checking. Keep the report factual: describe what happened, what you tested and what remained unchanged. Do not claim that a generic step fixed the game unless the symptom actually stopped and you can reproduce that result.
Use RSI’s official issue and support channels
For a persistent or reproducible problem, use RSI’s support channel and its “Submit a request” option. Include the evidence above and identify whether you are reporting a launcher failure, a launch failure, a crash during play or stuttering.
RSI’s development hub describes the Issue Council as a place to report problems and upvote existing reports. Search for an existing report that genuinely matches your symptom before creating a duplicate, and add precise reproduction information when the report allows it. An upvote is not a workaround and does not establish that another player’s proposed fix is safe for your PC.

The retrieved official material does not establish current Squadron 42-specific log locations, error-code meanings or diagnostic commands. If RSI support asks for a particular log or capture, follow its current instructions rather than copying procedures intended for another CIG title.
Changes to avoid as universal “fixes”
- Do not disable security protection or create broad security exclusions solely because an online post suggests it.
- Do not edit the registry, BIOS or hardware firmware as a generic response to a crash or stutter.
- Do not buy RAM, an SSD or a new PC until you have compared the existing machine with RSI’s requirements and checked compatibility.
- Do not treat a Star Citizen patch note or a workaround for another title as evidence of a Squadron 42 fix.
- Do not assume that meeting the minimums guarantees a particular frame rate or removes every crash.
- Do not keep repeating reinstalls or file checks without recording what changed; that makes a reproducible diagnosis harder.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Classify the failure. Separate launcher, launch, in-game crash and stutter symptoms.
- Capture the facts. Record the error, trigger, reproducibility and recent changes.
- Check the baseline. Compare Windows, CPU instruction support, graphics memory, RAM, SSD type and storage against RSI’s published requirements.
- Inspect the installation drive. Confirm NTFS formatting where applicable, sufficient free space and room for the pagefile guidance RSI describes.
- Run low-risk checks. Update Windows and drivers, close non-essential software and verify files only through the platform that manages the installation.
- Test once in a controlled state. Note whether the exact symptom changes; restore normal software afterward.
- Escalate with evidence. Use RSI support or the Issue Council, and consult Public Telemetry for performance context.
This order keeps hardware eligibility, storage, general software conflicts and game-specific defects separate. It also avoids presenting unsupported system modifications as guaranteed remedies.
