The correct repair depends on which SQL Server component or prerequisite failed, so first identify the exact installer, SQL Server release, Windows edition/build, and setup-log entry. Then update Windows and .NET, verify SQL Server prerequisites, use the matching Microsoft servicing package, and retry from a clean, adequately provisioned environment.
What error 0x80070643 means
Microsoft documents the 0x80070643 and 0x643 code family primarily as a .NET Framework update-installation error. In practical terms, Windows could not install or service a package; the number does not identify a bad SQL statement, malformed query, or database design problem. SQL Server setup can surface the same HRESULT when a prerequisite, shared component, or update fails underneath the main installer.

The code alone is not a diagnosis. The failing component named in the setup dialog and the corresponding log entry determine whether you need a Windows/.NET update, a SQL Server servicing package, a prerequisite repair, or a clean installation environment. The same HRESULT has also appeared in other server products, including Qlik NPrinting, which is why copying only the number into a search engine often produces conflicting advice.

Before changing Windows or SQL Server, preserve the evidence that tells you which branch of the repair applies.

- Copy the complete message. Record the product name, SQL Server edition and version, feature being installed (Database Engine, shared tools, client components, or another feature), and the stage at which setup stopped.
- Verify the characters. Look for
0x80070643or the shorter0x643. A display such as0X080070643contains an extra zero and is probably a transcription or rendering error. Correcting it prevents you from searching for a code that Microsoft does not document as a separate SQL error. - Record Windows details. Press
Windows key+R, enterwinver, and note the edition, build, and whether the computer is a workstation or a Windows Server installation. Also note whether it is managed by an organization that controls updates or antivirus settings. - Save setup evidence. Keep the full setup summary, the exact HRESULT, and any “failed rule,” “feature,” or prerequisite name. Do not delete logs before retrying; a second attempt can overwrite useful details.
This information matters because a SQL Server package is version-specific, while a .NET servicing failure is handled through Windows servicing. Applying an unrelated package can leave the original problem unchanged or create a second one.
Use a safe order of operations

Install Windows and .NET updates first
Because Microsoft documents this error family for .NET update failures, bring the operating system’s servicing stack up to date before attempting SQL Server again.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install all applicable quality, cumulative, and .NET updates offered for that machine.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates and review optional updates when your organization permits them. Install only items that apply to the Windows edition and hardware.
- Restart whenever Windows requests it. After the restart, check for updates again; a servicing prerequisite can expose another update only after the first reboot.
Windows Server
Use the organization’s approved Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or servicing-management process. Server administrators should schedule the restart and confirm that SQL Server services, clustered roles, backup jobs, and maintenance windows are not disrupted. If updates are controlled by policy, ask the administrator to approve the applicable .NET and Windows servicing packages rather than bypassing policy.

If Windows Update itself returns 0x80070643
Treat that as a Windows/.NET servicing problem first, even if it appeared while SQL Server setup was open. Record the update’s name and knowledge-base identifier from Windows Update history, restart, and retry the update. Do not substitute a random SQL Server package for a failed .NET update. If the same update repeatedly fails, preserve its identifier and the Windows Update history for Microsoft or organizational support.
Verify SQL Server version and prerequisites
SQL Server servicing packages are version-specific. Confirm the major release, edition, instance architecture, and current build before downloading anything. The installer’s setup report normally identifies the release; an existing instance can also reveal its version in SQL Server Management Studio or in the SQL Server error log. If no instance exists yet, use the version shown in the installation media or download page.
- Confirm that the Windows edition and build are supported by the SQL Server release you are installing.
- Confirm that the media matches the intended architecture and language.
- Check every prerequisite reported by SQL Server setup, including the .NET component named in the failure.
- Do not mix a cumulative update or servicing package from another SQL Server major release, edition, or architecture.
Microsoft distributes SQL Server servicing packages through Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog, and the Microsoft Download Center. Use the channel that your organization supports, and match the package to the installed SQL Server release and build. If setup is installing a new instance, finish the prerequisite updates first; if it is servicing an existing instance, verify the target instance and feature list before applying the package.

Remove common installation blockers
Make sure the system drive has room
Installers may expand temporary files and stage rollback data on the system drive even when SQL Server’s final data and program directories are elsewhere. Open Settings > System > Storage (or the equivalent storage view on Windows Server) and verify that the C: drive has comfortable free space for Windows Update, the SQL package, and temporary extraction. If space is tight, stop and free it using your normal change-control process, then restart before retrying. Do not delete SQL data or transaction-log files simply to make room.

A package downloaded from the internet can carry a Windows security-blocking mark. In File Explorer, right-click the installer or archive, select Properties, and, if the Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and choose Apply. Extract archives to a local folder before running setup. If your organization prohibits changing this property, ask an administrator to provide an approved, locally staged copy instead.
Account for antivirus and endpoint controls
Security software can inspect or quarantine files while setup is writing services, assemblies, or temporary packages. Qlik’s documented guidance for its own installer includes disabling antivirus during installation, but that is an environment-specific step, not a universal requirement for SQL Server. Follow your security policy first. If an administrator approves a temporary exclusion or pause, disconnect the machine from untrusted networks when appropriate, perform only the installation, re-enable protection immediately afterward, and confirm that the security product reports a healthy state. Never interpret a temporary pause as evidence that the computer is infected, and do not leave protection disabled for routine use.

Use an administrative account and a stable connection
Run setup with an account authorized to install software and create or update services. Keep the installer and extracted files on a local disk rather than a removable or unreliable network location. If the package must download prerequisites, verify that the server can reach the approved Microsoft update channel or use media supplied by your administrator.
Retry SQL Server setup methodically
- Restart after all approved Windows and .NET updates are complete.
- Close other installers and applications that may lock files.
- Start the SQL Server setup program from the verified, unblocked local media.
- Select the intended edition, instance, and features; compare them with the original attempt so that you do not accidentally create a second instance.
- When setup reaches the prerequisite or rules page, stop if a different rule fails. Record that rule instead of repeatedly clicking through.
- Allow the attempt to finish, then save the new summary and logs even if the result is another failure.
A changed HRESULT or a different failed feature is useful evidence: it may show that Windows/.NET servicing succeeded and that the remaining issue is specific to SQL Server media, permissions, or a feature component.

- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Unblock the downloaded installer through its file properties.
- Ensure that the C: drive has sufficient free space for setup and temporary files.
- Review antivirus interference and follow the organization’s approved temporary-installation procedure.
- Use a clean, dedicated server without an earlier NPrinting installation when performing a first installation or when the underlying Windows Server may be damaged. Qlik describes a clean slate as preferable in those situations.
These recommendations are specific to the Qlik installer. Apply them only when the product named in your error is Qlik NPrinting; they do not establish that every SQL Server installation needs a clean server or that an old SQL instance should be removed without a backup and change plan.
Read the setup log instead of guessing
When the retry fails, return to the setup summary and open the detailed log from the link provided by the installer. Search for the exact HRESULT, the word “failed,” the feature name, and the package or prerequisite identifier immediately before the error. Capture several lines before and after the failure so support can see the sequence, not just the final code.
- If the log names a .NET or Windows package, complete that servicing path and reboot before another SQL attempt.
- If it names a SQL Server cumulative update or shared component, verify the release, architecture, and installed build against the package you selected.
- If it reports access denied, a locked file, or a security-product action, involve the administrator responsible for permissions or endpoint protection.
- If it reports missing media or a corrupt package, obtain a fresh copy through the approved Microsoft channel and compare the download details supplied by that channel.
Do not “fix” a log by deleting folders, editing the registry, or removing SQL Server components blindly. Those actions can destroy the evidence and may make rollback or recovery harder.
What not to assume about 0x80070643
- It is not proof of a SQL query problem. Query syntax is evaluated after the database engine is installed and running; this HRESULT occurs during installation or servicing.
- It is not proof of malware. The number identifies an installer failure. Antivirus decisions should come from your security product and administrator, not from the code itself.
- One product’s workaround is not universal. A community report about important and optional Windows/.NET updates, or SQL Server Compact 3.5, is anecdotal and tied to a particular setup. Do not generalize it to modern SQL Server without confirming the installer involved.
- A third-party repair utility is not a substitute for the product log. Version, prerequisite, and feature details remain necessary even when a tool reports a system abnormality.
When to stop and contact support
Escalate after the approved Windows/.NET updates, correct SQL package, environment checks, and one controlled retry have failed. Provide the product and exact version, Windows edition/build, feature and instance name, complete HRESULT (including whether it was displayed as 0x80070643 or 0x643), setup summary, relevant log excerpts, update history, available C: drive space, and any antivirus or policy events at the failure time. For a production server, include the change window and backup or rollback status. This gives Microsoft or the product vendor enough context to identify the failing component without repeating risky cleanup steps.
