If Spotify downloads won’t play offline, first check whether the music or podcast finished downloading to the device you’re using. Then check Offline Mode, your account and device limits, available storage, and the app itself—in that order. Avoid reinstalling until you have tried the reversible fixes: Spotify removes downloads when you reinstall, so you’ll need to download them again.
1. Check whether the item finished downloading
When you can get online, open the playlist, album, or podcast on the device where you want to listen. Check its download status: a completed-download indicator means it is saved; a download or offline-sync update indicator means it may still be downloading or needs to update. If it is not complete, reconnect and let the download finish before testing offline playback. Spotify’s Listen offline guide explains these status indicators.

Spotify says individual songs cannot be downloaded directly. On mobile and desktop, add a song to a playlist, then download the playlist.

Download eligibility depends on your account: Spotify says Premium can download albums, playlists, and podcasts, while free accounts can download podcasts. Spotify’s support guidance, checked on 2026-10-04, says to go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads. It also sets a limit of up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices; if the account exceeds the device limit, Spotify removes downloads from the least recently used device. If downloads have disappeared, check whether the device is still among the account’s devices with downloads, and reconnect Spotify if it has been more than 30 days since it was online. These account rules affect stored downloads; they do not mean every failure to play is an account problem.
3. Check Offline Mode and the app’s basic state
Spotify normally plays downloads automatically when internet access is lost. Offline Mode is optional: it restricts playback to downloaded items, so anything not downloaded appears unavailable or grayed out. If the intended item is confirmed downloaded but will not play, restart Spotify and check for an app update.
On mobile or tablet
Open your profile picture, then go to Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline to find Offline Mode. The setting’s position or label may vary slightly by app version.

On desktop
Desktop controls differ from the mobile menu. Use Spotify’s platform-specific instructions in its Listen offline help page rather than looking for the mobile settings path.
4. Check storage, cache, and cleanup apps
Spotify recommends at least 1GB of free device memory. Its storage guidance says the app uses space for both downloads and cache, so a device that is nearly full may have trouble downloading or maintaining offline content. Check available storage and remove files you no longer need if space is low. See Spotify storage information.
If needed, clear Spotify’s cache from the app’s Storage setting. Clearing cache is not the same as deleting and reinstalling Spotify. While diagnosing, turn off cache-clearing or battery-saving apps that may interfere with Spotify; the company lists them among possible download problems.

If you use an Android SD card
On Android, Spotify can use an accessible external SD card for downloads. If downloads vanish or fail and the card is unavailable or faulty, check that the card is mounted and accessible, then review Spotify’s storage settings. A card problem is relevant only if you use one; buying a card will not fix unrelated Offline Mode, account, or playback issues. Spotify’s storage guide includes its Android storage steps.

5. Separate a connection problem from local playback trouble
A connection is needed to finish downloads and refresh Spotify’s status, but a completed download should play without internet. If the item is still downloading or Spotify appears unable to connect, test another app or open a web page. If those fail too, check Wi-Fi or mobile data, your router, network restrictions, or a firewall. Spotify’s offline connection guidance and internet and data usage help cover connection checks.
If other apps work and the item is fully downloaded, focus on Spotify or the device rather than buying network equipment. Try restarting and updating Spotify first.

6. Escalate only after the reversible checks
If Spotify still will not play a confirmed download, check for an operating-system update, close unused apps, and test Spotify on another device or in the web player. If the problem occurs on only one device, investigate its available memory and supported status; desktop users can also check firewall rules, and Android users can check SD-card access. Spotify’s playback troubleshooting guide suggests these device-level checks. For further device troubleshooting, Spotify advises contacting the device manufacturer.
Reinstalling is a last resort, not a harmless cache reset. Spotify says reinstalling removes downloaded music and podcasts, which must be downloaded again afterward. If you choose to reinstall, use Spotify’s platform-specific reinstall instructions and plan to restore your downloads while online.
