If Spotify closes as soon as a lossless track starts, first update the desktop app, restart it, and try again. Spotify Community staff said on October 13, 2026 that the documented desktop lossless-crash incident “should now be fixed.” If the current app still crashes, switch temporarily to a lower audio-quality setting, then work through hardware acceleration, cache, installation, output-device, and network checks in that order.
This sequence separates a service incident from a problem on your computer. It also gives you a quick workaround without deleting downloads, followed by progressively more disruptive fixes.

What the crash usually means
Lossless playback is a higher-bandwidth, higher-resolution path than ordinary Spotify streaming. Spotify’s support documentation describes lossless files as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. A desktop crash that happens exactly when a lossless song begins can therefore involve the app’s lossless playback code, hardware acceleration, an audio driver or output device, a corrupted local cache, or software that modifies sound.

There is no published crash-rate figure or detailed technical root-cause analysis for the incident. The official material establishes the symptom, the troubleshooting actions below, and the October 13, 2026 status update; it does not establish that a particular sound card, computer, or paid hardware upgrade is required.

Start with the two-minute recovery
1. Update and restart Spotify
- Close Spotify completely, including its background process if your operating system leaves one running.
- Open Spotify’s current official desktop app source and install any offered update.
- Launch Spotify again and play the same lossless track.
The October 13 staff update says the incident “should now be fixed,” so testing the current build before changing system settings avoids unnecessary work. If the crash has stopped, no further step is needed.
2. Lower audio quality as an immediate workaround
- Open Spotify Settings.
- Find the audio-quality controls and change the quality from Lossless to any lower available tier.
- Stop the current song, restart playback, and test the same album or playlist.
Spotify’s lossless guidance specifically recommends lowering audio quality when lossless playback glitches or buffers. This is a diagnostic as well as a workaround: if lower quality is stable while lossless consistently closes the app, the failure is tied to the lossless playback path rather than ordinary account playback.
Choose the least disruptive fix first

Disable desktop hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration is a practical next check after the quality workaround. Spotify Community guidance also advises keeping the operating system and graphics software current.
- Open Spotify on the desktop.
- Select your profile menu and open Settings.
- Scroll to Compatibility.
- Turn off Enable hardware acceleration.
- Restart Spotify completely, then retry a lossless track.
If the crash disappears, leave acceleration disabled while you update the operating system and graphics software. After those updates, you can test acceleration again; if it brings the crash back, keep it disabled and report the result to Spotify.
Update the surrounding software
- Install pending operating-system updates.
- Install the current graphics driver supplied for your computer.
- Restart the computer after those updates, not just the Spotify window.
Do not assume a graphics problem from the symptom alone. The value of this step is that it removes a known compatibility variable without deleting music downloads.

Restart Spotify and clear its cache
Spotify support places restarting the app and clearing its cache near the beginning of troubleshooting. A cache contains temporary data, so clearing it is less destructive than reinstalling.
- Exit Spotify fully.
- Open Spotify again and use its Settings storage or cache controls to clear temporary data, if your current app build displays them.
- Sign in if prompted, wait for the library to load, and test lossless playback before changing any other setting.
Cache labels and locations can vary by desktop release and operating system. Use the control exposed by your current Spotify build rather than deleting unrelated folders. Clearing a cache does not preserve offline copies that were stored as local app data in every configuration, so note any important downloads before proceeding; Spotify’s explicit warning about having to download content again applies to a clean reinstall.

A clean reinstall is appropriate when the current app is updated, hardware acceleration is off, and cache clearing has not changed the behavior. Spotify’s support guidance warns that downloaded music and podcasts need to be downloaded again after reinstalling.
- Before uninstalling, make a note of playlists or albums that you keep offline.
- Uninstall Spotify using your operating system’s normal app-removal process.
- Restart the computer.
- Install Spotify again from the current official app source.
- Sign in, leave the app at its default settings initially, and test one lossless track.
- Only after a successful test, restore your preferred quality and download offline content again.
Spotify Community’s clean-reinstall guidance describes this process as a way to remove corrupted cache and local application state. Reinstalling is not a cure for an account-wide service incident, so complete the update and incident check first.
Turn off sound-enhancement software during the test
Spotify Community’s FAQ recommends disabling external sound-enhancing software while isolating a crash. Temporarily turn off equalizers, virtual-surround tools, system-wide audio effects, and similar utilities. Test with Spotify’s unmodified output, then re-enable one utility at a time if playback is stable.

Check the playback route
A stable lossless stream needs a steady connection. Spotify recommends approximately 1.5 to 2 Mbps for best lossless listening. That is a connection guideline, not a guarantee that every network, router, or device will sustain playback without interruption.
Test the simplest route first
- Use the computer’s normal wired or built-in output, if available.
- Disconnect Bluetooth receivers, USB audio interfaces, and other optional devices temporarily.
- Play the same lossless track.
- Reconnect one device at a time and retest.
Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX can affect whether a connection supports lossless. A device may connect successfully while still negotiating a different quality or failing during the handoff. Supported third-party devices should run their current firmware.
Interpret the route test
- Built-in output works, external output crashes: investigate that device’s firmware, driver, cable, and audio settings.
- Every output crashes only in the desktop app: focus on Spotify’s app version, acceleration, cache, and reinstall.
- The web player or another device works: the account and track are less likely to be the immediate cause; compare the desktop environment.
- All devices fail: check Spotify’s service status and report the reproducible behavior rather than repeatedly reinstalling one computer.
Verify audio-device and sample-rate configuration
Spotify Community recommends confirming that Spotify is mapped to a valid audio device and that the device’s sample-rate configuration is sensible. The exact control names differ between operating systems and drivers, so avoid changing several advanced values at once.
- Open the operating system’s sound settings and identify the output currently selected for Spotify.
- Confirm that the device is connected, enabled, and producing ordinary system audio.
- Check the device’s format or sample-rate setting and use a standard value supported by both the operating system and the device.
- Disable exclusive-mode, enhancement, or spatial-audio options temporarily if your system exposes them.
- Restart Spotify and test lossless playback again.
Record the original setting before changing it. If another application also loses audio after the change, restore the previous format and troubleshoot the device driver separately.
Check Premium, device support, and rollout limits
Lossless availability is not identical for every listener. Spotify identifies Premium eligibility, market rollout, device support, and connection method as factors. A missing or unstable lossless option can therefore be an availability or compatibility issue rather than a damaged installation.

- Confirm that the signed-in account is eligible for lossless in your market.
- Check whether the specific desktop release and output device support the option.
- Remember that Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX may not provide the same lossless path as direct desktop playback.
- Keep supported external hardware on current firmware.
These checks matter when one account behaves differently across locations or devices. They do not prove that eligibility causes a crash; they define whether the lossless test is valid in the first place.

Change one variable per test and write down the result. A short matrix is more useful to support staff than a general statement that “lossless crashes.”

Use the same track for comparison only if it is available in the same quality on each test. A different master or quality tier can produce a different result and weaken the comparison.
What to send Spotify Support or Community
If the crash remains after the incident fix and the steps above, report it with reproducible details. Include:
- Spotify desktop app version.
- Operating-system name and version.
- Computer model or relevant hardware details.
- Output device and connection type, such as built-in audio, USB, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, or AUX.
- Whether hardware acceleration was enabled or disabled.
- Whether external equalizers or other audio-enhancement software were running.
- Whether the same track crashes every time or only occasionally.
- Whether lower quality plays normally.
- Whether the web player or another device remains stable.
- Approximate time of the failure and the steps that reproduce it.
Report through Spotify Support or the Spotify Community. State that the behavior occurs when lossless playback begins and attach the comparison results. Avoid posting account passwords, payment details, or full personal logs.
Common mistakes to avoid
Reinstalling before trying the workaround
A reinstall consumes time and removes offline downloads. Lower quality and an app restart can confirm the trigger in minutes.
Changing many audio settings simultaneously
If you alter sample rate, enhancements, drivers, and output devices at once, you will not know which change mattered. Use the controlled sequence above.
Assuming Bluetooth proves lossless is broken
Bluetooth and other connection methods can change the supported path. Test a direct, known-good output before attributing the crash to the lossless file itself.

The staff update dated October 13, 2026 says the desktop incident should be fixed. Always test the current app before applying system-wide changes.
When to leave lossless disabled
Keep a lower quality selected if you need uninterrupted listening and the lossless path still closes Spotify. That setting is a valid workaround while you wait for a newer app build or support response. Re-enable lossless only after an update or a controlled test shows that the crash has stopped.
