If your soundbar is behind the picture, the quickest reliable fix is to stop the TV’s own speakers, confirm that the cable is connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port, select the external-speaker output, and adjust Audio Delay or AV Sync while watching dialogue. Echo usually means the TV speakers and soundbar are playing together after processing the signal at different speeds.
Work through the steps below in order. Start with speaker-output and connection checks before changing formats or adding equipment; each device in the signal path can introduce its own processing delay.

Why soundbar audio gets out of sync
Digital audio is processed before you hear it. A TV, soundbar, streaming box, game console, or AV receiver may each take a different amount of time to decode, convert, enhance, or pass through the signal. Sony explains that a TV connected to a soundbar or home-theater system over HDMI or optical can produce delayed sound because of processing in the soundbar or system. Google TV Help similarly notes that an AVR or soundbar in the HDMI chain can add delay while processing the signal.
LG describes the same problem as latency caused by the TV and soundbar processing digital signals at different speeds. The result is a voice that arrives after the speaker’s lips move, or an echo when two speakers reproduce the same program with different delays.

There is no universal millisecond figure that applies to every TV and soundbar. The amount varies with the devices, source, audio format, and processing mode. Treat the visible lip-sync error—not a generic number—as the measurement that matters for your setup.
First, identify the symptom
The soundbar is behind the picture
Spoken words arrive after the actor’s mouth moves. This is a lip-sync or audio-delay problem. It can be caused by the soundbar, the TV’s processing mode, a source device, or more than one device in the HDMI chain.
The sound is ahead of the picture
The voice arrives before the mouth moves. Use the same sync control, but move the value in the direction that reduces the lead. The labels vary: look for Audio Delay, AV Sync, Lip-Sync, Audio/Video Sync, or Digital Output Audio Delay.

This usually means both the built-in TV speakers and the external soundbar are active. Because they process the signal at different speeds, the same voice reaches you twice. LG’s guidance is to use one speaker output, try PCM for Digital Sound Output when appropriate, and adjust AV Sync for the soundbar.
Fix the problem in the right order
1. Stop the echo by using one speaker output
- Open the TV’s audio or sound settings.
- Disable simultaneous output such as TV Speaker + External Speaker, TV Speaker and Soundbar, or a similarly named dual-output mode.
- Select the soundbar as the only active output. The setting may be called External Speaker, HDMI ARC/eARC, Audio System, or a manufacturer-specific equivalent.
- If the TV offers Digital Sound Output, try PCM when the current format is producing an echo or unstable sync. PCM is a troubleshooting choice; keep another format only if it works correctly with your equipment.
- Play a program with clear spoken dialogue and check whether the echo has disappeared before changing any other setting.
Do not try to correct an echo by turning up one of the two speakers. The underlying problem is that two separately processed copies are playing.

2. Verify the physical HDMI connection
For an HDMI setup, the cable must use the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. Connect that TV port to the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT/TV ARC, HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC), or an equivalent television-return port. LG specifically warns that the TV cable must be connected to the port marked ARC/eARC.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from both devices.
- Inspect the labels next to the TV’s HDMI sockets. A regular HDMI input is not automatically an audio-return port.
- Plug one end into the TV’s ARC/eARC socket.
- Plug the other end into the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC socket, not a soundbar input intended for another source.
- Reselect the TV’s external-speaker or HDMI ARC/eARC output.
Roku notes that a standard HDMI port can carry video without sending audio back to the soundbar. If the cable is in an ordinary HDMI input, you can have a picture and still get no soundbar audio—or end up troubleshooting the wrong symptom.
3. Select the correct TV output
After moving the cable, open the TV’s sound-output menu and choose the external system. Common labels include External Speaker, HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC, Audio System, or Receiver. The exact wording depends on the TV maker.
Confirm that the soundbar itself is set to its HDMI television-return input. If the TV reports that an audio system is connected, leave the TV speaker disabled so a second copy cannot create an echo.
4. Use eARC and passthrough when the equipment supports them
Roku says eARC has built-in audio and video lip-sync support. Its guidance also identifies Auto passthrough as a way to avoid delay caused by TV processing. If both your TV and soundbar offer eARC, enable the eARC mode and use passthrough or Auto passthrough where the TV provides that choice.

Passthrough changes the processing path: instead of converting the incoming audio before forwarding it, the TV attempts to pass it through to the soundbar. If a format-conversion setting is introducing delay, passthrough can remove that step. Test it with the same source and dialogue scene rather than changing several settings at once.
Recommended Free Tools
If your system has ARC but not eARC, use the ARC-labeled ports and test the available passthrough or automatic audio option. The menus and supported formats differ by model, so use only settings your TV and soundbar expose.
5. Adjust Audio Delay or AV Sync
Once the speakers and cable are correct, fine-tune timing. Sony recommends manual Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay for optical connections, and the same type of control may be available on HDMI systems.
- Start a program with a close-up of someone speaking clearly.
- Open the TV or soundbar audio settings.
- Choose Audio Delay, AV Sync, Lip-Sync, Audio/Video Sync, or Digital Output Audio Delay.
- Change the value a small amount.
- Watch the mouth and listen to the consonants in the same line of dialogue.
- Continue in the direction that brings the voice and picture together. If the voice is late, reduce the delay when the control allows negative or lower values; if the voice is early, increase it.
- Check a second program or source after the setting looks correct.
Some controls are on the TV, some are on the soundbar, and some systems expose both. Avoid applying a large correction in both places without checking the result; two separate corrections can overcompensate.
6. Isolate every device in the HDMI chain
Additional devices can add their own processing time. Google TV Help identifies soundbars and AVRs in the HDMI chain as possible sources of delay, and the same principle applies when a console or streaming box is involved.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Turn off or disconnect consoles, streaming boxes, Blu-ray players, and AVRs temporarily.
- Leave only the TV and soundbar connected.
- Test a built-in TV app or another direct TV source.
- If the sync is correct, reconnect one external device.
- Test again before reconnecting the next device.
- When the delay returns, inspect that source’s audio-format and passthrough settings.
This procedure distinguishes a system-wide delay from a source-specific one. If only one console or streaming box is affected, changing the soundbar’s global delay may make every other source worse.
7. Try optical when ARC/eARC is unavailable
Optical audio is a valid alternative if the TV or soundbar lacks compatible ARC/eARC. Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input, select the optical source on the soundbar, and choose the corresponding external audio output on the TV.
Sony specifically recommends manual Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay adjustment for optical systems. Optical also has fewer control and format capabilities in many setups, so it may require more manual tuning than HDMI ARC/eARC. Use it when compatibility or available ports make it the practical choice, not as an automatic cure for every delay.
8. Power-cycle and reseat everything
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Disconnect the HDMI or optical cable from both ends.
- Reconnect the cable firmly to the labeled ports.
- Turn the TV on, then turn on the soundbar.
- Reselect the external speaker or HDMI ARC/eARC output.
- Play dialogue and check sync again.
A restart can clear a stuck HDMI-handshake state or a mode that did not apply correctly. If the problem remains, test another source and, if possible, another TV. A delay that follows the soundbar to another TV points toward the soundbar or its processing; a delay that stays with one TV or source points toward that device or its settings.

| HDMI eARC | TV HDMI ARC/eARC port to soundbar HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port | Roku says eARC includes built-in audio and video lip-sync support; Auto passthrough can avoid TV-processing delay. | Use when both devices support eARC and you want the most direct lip-sync and passthrough options available on the equipment. |
| HDMI ARC | TV HDMI ARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC port | ARC is the TV audio-return path. Roku warns that a standard HDMI port may carry video without returning soundbar audio. | Use when eARC is unavailable but both devices provide compatible ARC ports. |
| Optical | TV optical output to soundbar optical input | It is a valid alternative when ARC/eARC is unavailable. Sony advises manual Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay for optical systems; optical has fewer control and format capabilities in many setups. | Use for older or incompatible equipment, then tune the delay manually. |
Whichever connection you choose, the TV must be set to the matching output and the soundbar must be on the matching input. A correct cable in the wrong port behaves like a faulty system.

Troubleshooting by result
There is no sound from the soundbar
- Check that the cable is in the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port rather than a regular HDMI port.
- Confirm that the TV output is External Speaker, HDMI ARC/eARC, or the equivalent label.
- Confirm that the soundbar input is HDMI TV ARC/eARC or Optical, matching the cable.
- Reseat the cable and power-cycle both devices.
- If HDMI remains silent, test optical only if both devices have optical ports.
The echo remains after selecting the soundbar
- Look for a second setting that keeps TV speakers active, such as TV Speaker + External Speaker.
- Disable simultaneous output rather than merely lowering the TV volume.
- Try PCM under Digital Sound Output when appropriate.
- Check that another HDMI device is not sending a separately processed audio path.
Only one source is out of sync
- Disconnect other HDMI devices and test the affected source by itself.
- Inspect that source’s audio-format and passthrough settings.
- Use a source-specific delay control if the device provides one.
- Do not change the global soundbar delay until you know whether other sources are aligned.
Every source is out of sync
- Verify the physical ARC/eARC or optical connection.
- Set the TV to the correct external output.
- Test passthrough or eARC where supported.
- Use the TV or soundbar’s Audio Delay/AV Sync control.
- Power-cycle both devices and retest.
The delay changes when you change audio format
That behavior points to processing or format conversion. Compare PCM with the available passthrough or automatic mode, changing one setting at a time. Keep the mode that produces aligned dialogue and reliable sound on your actual sources.
A clean setup checklist
- Use only one active speaker output: the soundbar, not TV speakers and soundbar together.
- For HDMI, use the TV port explicitly labeled ARC or eARC.
- Connect that port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port.
- Select External Speaker, HDMI ARC/eARC, or the equivalent TV setting.
- Enable eARC and Auto passthrough when both devices support them and the options are available.
- Try PCM when the current digital-output format causes echo or unstable sync.
- Keep Audio Delay or AV Sync adjustments as small and source-appropriate as possible.
- Reconnect HDMI devices one at a time if the problem returns.
- Use optical when ARC/eARC is unavailable, expecting fewer control and format options in many systems.
- Power-cycle and reseat cables after changing the connection or output mode.
When replacing the soundbar is justified
Replacement should be a last resort, not the first response to a lip-sync complaint. Consider a different soundbar only when the existing unit lacks eARC, lacks a usable passthrough path, or offers no adjustable sync control and the delay persists across properly configured TVs and sources.
Before buying anything, confirm which features your current TV actually supports. A new soundbar cannot create eARC if the TV has no eARC port, and changing hardware will not fix an echo caused by leaving both speaker outputs active.

If the cable is missing, damaged, too short, or repeatedly connected to the wrong port, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for an eARC soundbar is the direct accessory to consider. For a system without compatible ARC/eARC, a Toslink optical audio cable is the secondary option. The cable does not replace the need to use the correct labeled ports and output settings.
