How to fix Sony WH-CH730N headphones that won’t connect or keep disconnecting

If your Sony WH-CH730N headphones will not connect or repeatedly drop the connection, follow Sony’s escalation order: turn the headset off, charge it, turn it on again, and restart the phone or computer. Then stop a nearby previously used device from taking the automatic connection, pair within 1 m, reset the headset without erasing pairings, and initialize it only as a last resort.

Start with Sony’s basic recovery sequence

Begin with the least destructive fix. Turn the WH-CH730N off, charge it, and turn it on again. Restart the smartphone or computer you are trying to use. This clears a temporary Bluetooth state on both sides without deleting the headset’s saved devices.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Turn the headset off.
  2. Connect it to power and allow it to charge.
  3. Turn the headset on again.
  4. Restart the phone or computer.
  5. Try the connection again.

If the problem remains, Sony’s troubleshooting path moves to the Sound Connect app or Sony’s support site, then a reset, then initialization, and finally support from Sony or a Sony dealer. Do not jump straight to initialization: initialization deletes every saved Bluetooth pairing.

Stop another nearby device from taking the connection

The WH-CH730N can automatically reconnect to the Bluetooth device it used most recently. If that phone, tablet, computer, or other source is nearby, it may capture the headset before your intended device can pair with it. This often looks like a failed pairing attempt even though the headset is working normally.

Temporarily disable the competing device

  • Find the device that was connected most recently.
  • Turn Bluetooth off on that device, or power the device down.
  • Keep it away from the headset while you pair the intended phone or computer.

After Bluetooth is disabled on the competing device, retry pairing from the intended source. Once the new connection is stable, you can turn Bluetooth back on elsewhere.

Remove a stale entry on the intended source

If the phone or computer already lists WH-CH730N but will not connect, open its Bluetooth settings and remove or forget that saved entry. Then start pairing again rather than repeatedly tapping a stale listing. The exact wording varies by operating system, but the action is the same: delete the old WH-CH730N record, make the headset discoverable, and select it as a new device.

Pair the WH-CH730N from scratch

Pairing works best when the source device is close and the headset has charge. Keep the phone or computer within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the headset. For a first pairing, and after initialization, the WH-CH730N enters pairing mode automatically. For a second or later device, you must enter pairing mode manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual pairing for a second or later device

  1. Make sure the headset is charged and within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the phone or computer.
  2. Press and hold the headset’s power button for about 5 seconds or longer.
  3. Keep holding until the indicator repeatedly flashes blue twice and voice guidance says “Pairing.”
  4. Open the Bluetooth settings on the intended source device.
  5. Select WH-CH730N series from the available devices.
  6. If a passkey is requested, enter 0000.

Pairing mode automatically cancels after 5 minutes. If the headset disappears before you finish, start the process again by holding the power button for about 5 seconds.

iPhone pairing path

On an iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, wait for WH-CH730N series to appear under available devices, and tap it. If the name does not appear, retry from the Bluetooth step: confirm that the headset is in pairing mode, keep it within 1 m, and check that a previously connected device is not capturing the connection.

What the indicator and voice prompt mean

The repeated blue double-flash is the visual sign that the headset is waiting to pair. The “Pairing” voice prompt confirms the same state. If neither appears, the headset is not in the manual pairing mode needed for a second device; turn it off and repeat the power-button hold.

Fix repeated disconnections after a successful pairing

A headset that pairs but keeps disconnecting needs a different diagnosis from one that never appears in the Bluetooth list. First determine whether the drop affects every source or only one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one phone or computer disconnects

  • Restart that phone or computer.
  • Turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices that have used the WH-CH730N recently.
  • Forget the WH-CH730N entry on the affected source.
  • Put the headset back into pairing mode and select WH-CH730N series again.

If the headset remains connected to another source but fails on this one, the evidence points to the affected source’s saved Bluetooth state rather than a headset-wide failure. Re-pairing from a clean entry is more useful than repeatedly trying the same saved record.

If every source disconnects

Repeat Sony’s basic sequence first: power the headset off, charge it, turn it on, and restart the source device. If drops continue with more than one phone or computer, proceed to the reset procedure below. A reset keeps pairing information, so it is the appropriate next escalation before erasing all connections.

Keep the test controlled

During troubleshooting, keep the source within the 1 m pairing distance and disable Bluetooth on devices that might automatically reconnect. Test one source at a time. This prevents an automatic reconnection from being mistaken for a new disconnection.

Reset the headset without deleting pairings

Sony’s reset procedure preserves pairing information and other settings. It is useful when the WH-CH730N powers on and has been paired, but the connection state is unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the headset to an AC outlet using its USB-C connection.
  2. Press the power button and the noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button at the same time.
  3. Watch the indicator. Sony says the indicator turns off and then lights again when the reset is complete.
  4. After the indicator returns, try the existing Bluetooth connection again.

The reset does not remove saved pairings. You should therefore try the already listed WH-CH730N entry first. If that entry is still unusable, forget it on the source device and perform a fresh pairing while keeping the source within 1 m.

Initialize the WH-CH730N only after reset fails

Initialization is the factory-setting recovery step. It is appropriate only after charging, source-device checks, re-pairing, and reset have failed. Unlike reset, initialization deletes all pairing information.

  1. Turn the headset off.
  2. Remove the USB-C cable. Initialization must be performed with USB-C removed.
  3. Press and hold the power button and the play/call button together for at least 10 seconds.
  4. Release the buttons when the indicator flashes blue four times.

That four-flash indication confirms that initialization is complete. The headset no longer has the old Bluetooth records, so remove the WH-CH730N entry from every phone or computer that still lists it. Then pair again: keep the source within 1 m, wait for the headset to enter pairing mode automatically after initialization, and select WH-CH730N series. Enter 0000 if the source asks for a passkey.

Choose the next step by symptom

What you observe Best next action Why
The headset is off or has little charge Charge it, turn it off and on, then restart the source device This is Sony’s first recovery step and does not erase pairings.
The headset connects to the wrong nearby device Turn Bluetooth off on the most recently connected device That device may be taking the automatic connection.
The headset is not listed while pairing Hold power for about 5 seconds, keep the source within 1 m, and select WH-CH730N series Manual pairing is required for a second or later device; pairing mode times out after 5 minutes.
One source has a stale or failing entry Forget the saved WH-CH730N record and pair again A fresh Bluetooth record removes the source’s old pairing state.
Several sources disconnect after basic recovery Reset with USB-C power plus power and noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode Reset refreshes the headset while retaining pairing data.
Reset does not solve the problem Initialize with USB-C removed, then delete old entries and pair again Initialization restores factory settings but erases every pairing.
The headset still fails after initialization Contact Sony support or the nearest Sony dealer Sony’s troubleshooting sequence ends with professional support at this point.

Common mistakes that make pairing appear to fail

Holding the wrong button for too little time

A normal power press is not the same as entering manual pairing mode. For a second or later device, hold the power button for about 5 seconds or longer and wait for the repeated blue double-flash and “Pairing” prompt.

Leaving the source too far away

The specified pairing distance is within 1 m (3.2 ft). Move the phone or computer close to the headset during discovery and the first connection rather than testing from across a room.

Trying to pair while another device is connected

If the last-used phone or computer is nearby with Bluetooth enabled, it may reconnect automatically. Disable Bluetooth on that device before attempting the new pairing.

Expecting reset to erase the old device

Reset retains pairing information and other settings. If the source’s saved entry is corrupted, forget that entry on the source after the reset and pair again. Use initialization only when you are prepared to lose every saved pairing.

Connecting USB-C during initialization

Initialization requires the USB-C cable to be removed. A connected cable means you are not following the required initialization state; turn the headset off, disconnect USB-C, and repeat the simultaneous power-and-play/call hold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waiting longer than the pairing window

Pairing mode cancels after 5 minutes. If the headset no longer appears, restart pairing mode rather than assuming the headset has failed.

Use Sony’s Sound Connect app and support path

After the basic power, charging, source-device, and pairing checks, Sony directs owners to the Sound Connect app or its support site for additional troubleshooting and setup help. Use that official software path when the headset connects inconsistently but still responds to controls, or when you need Sony’s current guidance for your phone or computer.

If the headset still does not operate correctly after initialization, Sony directs you to contact Sony support or the nearest Sony dealer. Have the exact model name, the source devices you tested, and the result of the reset and initialization steps ready so support can start at the correct point in the escalation sequence.

Repair, support, or replacement: a practical decision framework

Do not decide to replace the WH-CH730N solely because one phone will not connect. First establish whether the headset powers on and charges, whether reset produces a stable connection, whether only one source is affected, and whether initialization restores pairing. These observations separate a source-device problem from a headset-wide failure.

Check Result that favors continued troubleshooting Result that favors Sony support or replacement consideration
Power and charging The headset powers on after charging and responds to button presses It will not power on or charge after the basic recovery sequence
Number of affected sources Only one phone or computer fails while another source works Multiple sources show the same connection failure
Reset outcome Connection becomes stable while saved pairings remain available Disconnections continue across sources after reset
Initialization outcome Fresh pairing succeeds after old entries are deleted Fresh pairing still fails after the four-blue-flash initialization
Economics Support or repair is sensible when the headset otherwise works and the issue is source-specific Compare the total repair or support cost with replacing the exact WH-CH730N model

No published disconnection-rate or failure-rate statistic is established in Sony’s cited help material, so there is no reliable percentage that can predict when replacement will be cheaper. Base the decision on the checks above and on the actual support or replacement cost available to you.

A complete recovery checklist

  • Turn the headset off, charge it, turn it on, and restart the phone or computer.
  • Disable Bluetooth on the device that was connected most recently.
  • Forget a stale WH-CH730N entry on the intended source if necessary.
  • Keep the source within 1 m (3.2 ft).
  • For a later device, hold power for about 5 seconds until the blue indicator flashes twice repeatedly and “Pairing” is announced.
  • Select WH-CH730N series; use 0000 if a passkey is requested.
  • Restart pairing if the 5-minute pairing window expires.
  • Reset with USB-C connected to an AC outlet while pressing power and noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode together.
  • Only if reset fails, initialize with USB-C removed by holding power and play/call for at least 10 seconds until the indicator flashes blue four times.
  • After initialization, delete old Bluetooth entries and pair again.
  • If the fault remains, contact Sony support or the nearest Sony dealer.

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop repeating the same pairing attempts once you have completed the charging and restart sequence, eliminated the competing nearby device, performed a clean pairing, reset the headset, and—if necessary—initialized it. Initialization is the final user-level recovery step because it removes all pairing data. If a fresh pairing still fails afterward, further button combinations are unlikely to add useful information; follow Sony’s direction to support or a dealer.
