“Connection problem” can describe three different states. Choosing the wrong path often wastes time—for example, initializing the earbuds will not fix a congested Bluetooth environment, and changing a codec will not help if the case battery is too low to complete pairing.

| What you observe | Most useful first checks | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The WF-1000XM6 do not appear, or pairing fails | Charge and seat both earbuds, delete the old Bluetooth record, restart the source, then pair again | Separates a power or stale-record problem from a source-device or earbud problem |
| They connect, then disconnect or audio skips | Move closer, test in a quiet place, choose Prioritize Stable Connection, and remove competing wireless connections | Shows whether radio interference, processing load, distance, or multipoint is involved |
| Bluetooth says connected, but there is no sound | Pause/resume, check output, volume and balance, reseat the earbuds, then re-pair if needed | Distinguishes playback routing or a temporary audio session fault from a lost Bluetooth link |
Write down which state you have and whether it occurs with one source or several. That simple comparison prevents you from repeating a factory operation when the fault is actually in a phone, computer, or crowded radio environment.
When the WF-1000XM6 will not pair or connect
1. Check the case, battery and seating
- Put both earbuds in the charging case and open the lid.
- Look at the case indicator. Sony says a dark indicator during this check can mean the headphone battery is at 1% or lower. Charge the case and earbuds, preferably with the supplied cable, before trying again.
- Confirm that each earbud is sitting fully in its charging position. If an earbud is not seated, the case may not charge it or place it in the expected pairing state.
- If you use third-party ear tips, temporarily fit the supplied tips or remove the third-party tips to test. Sony warns that tips that are too large or shaped differently can prevent an earbud from sitting correctly in the case.
Close and reopen the lid after charging, then retry discovery. A case that cannot detect one earbud can make a normal Bluetooth procedure look like a phone problem. Check both sides individually for visible obstruction and press each earbud gently into its bay; do not force the lid or contacts.
2. Clear the old Bluetooth record and pair from scratch
- Restart the phone, tablet, computer, Walkman, or other playback device.
- Open that device’s Bluetooth settings and select the saved WF-1000XM6 entry.
- Choose the device-specific command to Forget, Delete, Remove, or Unpair it. The exact label depends on the operating system.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, or open the device’s Bluetooth discovery screen again.
- With both earbuds in the open case, follow the source device’s normal procedure to add a new Bluetooth device and select WF-1000XM6.
Deleting the record matters because a device can retain a stale address or an incomplete previous pairing. Do not keep selecting a broken saved entry; remove it and create a new pairing record. If several old WF-1000XM6 records appear, remove each one from the source you are testing so the operating system cannot select the wrong entry.
Pair with only the intended source during this test. A nearby phone, tablet, or computer that has used the earbuds before may reconnect first, making the earbuds seem unavailable even though Bluetooth is working.
3. Isolate the playback source
Try a second phone, computer, Walkman, or other Bluetooth playback source. If the earbuds pair and play normally there, Sony’s troubleshooting flow treats the first source as the likely point of failure. Check that source maker’s Bluetooth, operating-system, or driver support rather than repeatedly resetting the earbuds.
A device that previously used the earbuds with LE Audio can also capture the automatic connection. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that older device before pairing the WF-1000XM6 to the intended source. This is especially useful when the earbuds appear to connect somewhere else immediately after leaving the case.
Use the same earbud and case condition for both tests: fully charge them, seat both units, and keep the second source nearby. A successful second-source pairing does not prove the first device is permanently defective; it shows where to focus the next troubleshooting step.

If charging, record deletion, a restart, and a second source do not solve pairing, perform a reset. If the problem remains, initialize the earbuds and pair them again. The distinction and exact button timing are described in the reset section below; initialization deletes every saved Bluetooth pairing, so it should not be the first step.
When Bluetooth connects but sound skips or drops out
Check the environment before changing audio quality
Sony identifies crowded radio environments—such as trains, busy roads, and other places with many wireless devices—as possible causes of interruptions. Test with the source close to the earbuds in a quiet location. If playback is stable at home or in a less crowded place but unreliable in a congested area, interference is the leading explanation supported by Sony’s flow.
Keep the phone or computer on the same side of your body as the earbud that seems to cut out, avoid placing the source in a bag surrounded by metal, and do not cover its antenna with your hand. These are tests, not permanent rules: a change that restores stability identifies a practical range or obstruction issue. Compare the same song or stream for several minutes in each location instead of judging from a single brief interruption.
Set Sound Connect to prioritize stability
- Open the Sony | Sound Connect app while the WF-1000XM6 are connected.
- Go to My Device → All device settings → Connection.
- Set Bluetooth Connection Quality to Prioritize Stable Connection.
- Play the same track or stream in the same location and compare the result.
Higher sound-quality modes can require more processing and may be less tolerant of a busy radio environment. Prioritizing stability trades some potential quality headroom for a connection Sony considers more robust for dropout troubleshooting. It is a diagnostic setting, so you can return to the previous quality choice after you establish whether stability improves.

If the earbuds are using LE Audio, switch to Classic Audio before following this sequence. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 dropout instructions are written around Classic Audio for these checks. On a source that offers a choice between SBC and AAC wireless playback, Sony suggests selecting AAC and then retesting. The available codec controls depend on the source device; do not assume that every phone or computer exposes the same menu.
Change one variable at a time
After selecting stable-connection quality, alter one condition, test for several minutes, and note whether the symptom changes. Making every change at once prevents you from identifying the actual trigger.
- Disconnect an unused second multipoint source. A laptop, tablet, or phone that remains connected can compete for the earbuds’ attention even when it is not playing audio.
- Turn off Service Link temporarily. If dropouts stop, re-enable it later and determine whether its automatic behavior is worth the trade-off.
- Remove nearby Bluetooth devices. Temporarily disconnect a smartwatch, keyboard, tracker, speaker, or other device and retest.
- Change Wi-Fi conditions. If your router and source support it, try the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. If Wi-Fi is enabled but not being used, turn it off briefly as a diagnostic test.
- Disable Adaptive Sound Control and Speak-to-Chat. These features can react to detected movement, voice, or surroundings. Turning them off temporarily checks whether an automatic mode change is being mistaken for an audio dropout.
- Close other apps. Stop downloads, video calls, games, and other programs that may compete for audio processing or Bluetooth resources.
- Reseat and restart. Put both earbuds in the case briefly, take them out, restart the playback device, bring it closer, and test again.
Do not infer a hardware defect from one crowded-location test. A failure that disappears when the source is nearby or competing devices are removed points to the connection conditions instead. Conversely, a repeatable failure with several sources in the same quiet location deserves the reset and service path.
Use the second-source test for persistent skips
Play the same content from another phone or computer after applying the stable-connection setting. If the second source is clean while the original still skips, Sony’s guidance points you toward the original source manufacturer. If both sources skip in the same quiet location, continue to reset and, if necessary, initialize the headphones.

Keep Classic Audio, stable-connection quality, and the same approximate distance for both source tests. Changing the source, codec, distance, and environment together makes the comparison inconclusive.
Bluetooth says connected, but there is no sound
When the Bluetooth status remains connected, first treat the problem as an audio-session or output-routing issue rather than immediately deleting the pairing.
- Pause playback, wait a moment, and resume.
- Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid briefly, then remove them and allow the connection to re-establish.
- Raise the source-device volume and check left-right audio balance. A balance control set fully to one side can make one earbud appear silent.
- On a computer, open the system sound settings and select WF-1000XM6 as the active output device. A computer can remain connected while sending audio to its speakers, a monitor, or another headset.
- Move the source closer and test away from crowded radio activity. If sound returns, use the stable-connection setting described above.
- If the connection appears lost despite the status icon, forget the WF-1000XM6 record and pair again.
Only after these checks should you move to reset, followed by initialization if necessary. The same second-source test helps decide whether the silence follows the earbuds or stays with the original device. If only one side is silent, confirm balance and reseat both earbuds before assuming a Bluetooth failure.
Reset versus initialization: choose the safe operation
Sony uses two different operations. A reset restarts the headphones while retaining pairing information and other settings. Initialization restores factory settings and removes the saved Bluetooth records.
| Operation | What it changes | Procedure | Confirmation and next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reset | Restarts the earbuds; pairing information is retained | Place both earbuds in the case with the lid open. Hold the case reset button for about 20 seconds or longer. The indicator flashes orange after about 15 seconds; keep holding through that flash until the indicator turns off. | Release only after the indicator turns off, then retry the existing pairing. |
| Initialization | Returns the headphones to factory settings and deletes all Bluetooth pairing information | With both earbuds in the open case, hold the initialize button for about 15 seconds or longer. When orange flashing begins, release within five seconds. | Four green flashes confirm completion. Delete the old WF-1000XM6 record from every source and pair again. |
Why the timing matters
During reset, releasing while the indicator is flashing orange initializes the headphones instead. Keep holding through the orange flash until the indicator turns off if you intend only to reset. Conversely, for initialization, release within five seconds after orange flashing starts; four green flashes indicate that the factory operation completed.
A low case battery can prevent initialization. Charge the case first if the indicator sequence does not occur. Sony Support states: “Initialization returns the headphones to the factory settings and all Bluetooth pairing information is deleted.” Plan to re-pair every phone, computer, and other source afterward. If you are unsure which operation you started, wait for the indicator confirmation rather than releasing early.
A practical decision tree
| Test result | Next action |
|---|---|
| Case indicator is dark and the earbuds may be at 1% or lower | Charge the case and earbuds, verify seating, then retry pairing. |
| Pairing works after deleting the old record | Keep the new record; no reset is needed. |
| Pairing works on a second source but not the first | Investigate the first phone, computer, operating system, or Bluetooth driver. |
| Skips occur only in crowded places | Reduce distance, use Prioritize Stable Connection, and limit nearby wireless connections. |
| Skips continue on multiple sources in a quiet place | Reset, then initialize only if the reset fails; pair again after initialization. |
| No sound occurs while Bluetooth remains connected | Check playback output, volume, balance, reseat the earbuds, and re-pair before destructive steps. |
When to contact Sony service
Contact Sony support or service when the WF-1000XM6 still cannot pair or play reliably after charging, correct case seating, source isolation, reset, and initialization. Persistent failure across more than one playback device is stronger evidence that the issue follows the headphones; failure on only one source points first to that source’s manufacturer.

Have the exact symptom, the source devices tested, whether the issue occurs in a quiet location, and the reset or initialization result ready for support. Sony’s troubleshooting articles describe possible causes and recovery steps, not a published defect rate, so do not assume that a single dropout proves a known manufacturing fault.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my WF-1000XM6 not appear in Bluetooth?
Charge the case and both earbuds, verify that each earbud sits correctly, then restart the source and delete its old WF-1000XM6 record. Pair again with both earbuds in the open case. If another phone or computer can pair, troubleshoot the original source rather than repeatedly resetting the earbuds.
What does a dark case indicator mean during pairing checks?
Sony says it can indicate that the headphone battery is at 1% or lower. Charge the case and earbuds, check seating, and retry. Third-party ear tips that prevent proper seating can also interfere with charging and pairing.
Should I use LE Audio or Classic Audio while troubleshooting skips?
Switch to Classic Audio for Sony’s dropout troubleshooting sequence if the earbuds are using LE Audio. Then select Prioritize Stable Connection in Sound Connect and retest. On sources offering SBC or AAC, Sony suggests trying AAC.
Will Prioritize Stable Connection reduce sound quality?
It trades some potential high-quality playback headroom for a connection Sony considers more robust. Use it as a diagnostic and practical setting in crowded radio environments; you can restore the previous quality choice after testing.

What is the difference between resetting and initializing?
Resetting restarts the earbuds and retains pairing information. Initialization restores factory settings and deletes all Bluetooth pairing information, so every phone, computer, and other source must be paired again.
Why did my reset become an initialization?
For a reset, keep holding the case button through the orange flash until the indicator turns off. Releasing while it flashes orange initializes the headphones. For intentional initialization, release within five seconds after orange flashing begins and look for four green flashes.
Bluetooth says connected, but why is there no sound?
Pause and resume, reseat the earbuds in the case, raise volume, check left-right balance, and select WF-1000XM6 as the active computer output. Move closer and test away from crowded wireless activity before forgetting and pairing again.
When should I contact Sony service?
Escalate after charging, correct seating, source isolation, reset, and initialization fail. Persistent failure across multiple playback sources points more strongly to the headphones; a problem limited to one source should first go to that source’s manufacturer.
The Bottom Line
Start with the symptom, not the most destructive fix. Charge and seat both earbuds, remove stale pairing records, and test another source for pairing failures. For skips, move closer, use Sound Connect’s Prioritize Stable Connection, switch from LE Audio to Classic Audio, and isolate competing wireless devices one at a time. Reset first; initialize only when necessary because it deletes every pairing. If the failure persists across sources after initialization, contact Sony service.
