Start with the charging path, then repair the Bluetooth connection. Put both earbuds in the case, confirm the case indicator responds, and make sure each earbud is sitting on its charging contacts. Clean the contacts and USB-C port with a soft, dry cloth, charge with the supplied cable, then forget the old Bluetooth entry and pair again. If that fails, reset the earbuds; use initialization only as the final software step because it erases every pairing.

The exact button or touch-control sequence depends on the model printed on the case. The instructions below cover the WF-1000XM5, WF-1000XM6, WF-C500, WF-C700N and WF-C710N workflows documented by Sony, while explaining when a failed case or indicator points to service rather than another reset.

Check charging before troubleshooting Bluetooth

A case with no usable charge can make the earbuds disappear from Bluetooth, refuse to enter pairing mode or shut down immediately after connecting. Begin with the case, not the phone. Bluetooth discovery is not a useful test if the case cannot power the earbuds.

1. Confirm the case indicator

  • Place both earbuds in the case and close, then reopen, the lid. Watch for the normal charging or status light for your model.
  • If no indicator appears, connect the case directly to a computer USB port or a USB AC adapter using the supplied USB-C cable. Test a second known-good USB power source if necessary.
  • Leave the case connected long enough to establish that it accepts power before trying to pair. A case that never lights, even with a known-good cable and power source, may have a hardware fault.
  • Do not assume a brief flash means both earbuds are charging. Check each side separately and compare the seating and battery behavior of the left and right earbuds.

2. Reseat both earbuds

Each earbud must sit low enough for its charging contacts to touch the contacts in the case. An earbud that is floating high in the cradle can look docked while its battery remains empty, and it may also prevent pairing mode from starting. Remove each side, inspect the cradle, then press it gently back into place. The two earbuds should sit at the same apparent height when the lid is closed.

3. Clean the charging path

Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the metal contacts on both earbuds, the matching contacts inside the case and the case USB-C port. Earwax, dust or residue can interrupt charging even when the case light appears normal. Do not pour liquid into the case or scrape the contacts with metal. Re-seat the earbuds after cleaning and check the indicator again.

4. Use the correct charging conditions

For the WF-C500, Sony specifies an ambient charging range of 15–35 °C. If the case or earbuds are very cold or hot, bring them into that range before charging. For wireless charging on the WF-1000XM5, place the case correctly on the pad with the SONY logo facing upward; use the supplied cable when testing whether the case itself can accept power. Wired charging is the better first diagnostic because it removes charger-alignment questions.

5. Let the case establish a charge before pairing

After connecting the cable, wait until the case gives a charging indication, then leave both earbuds seated while you work through the Bluetooth steps. Repeatedly opening the lid, removing one side and trying to pair while the case is nearly empty can create confusing symptoms. If the light never responds after cleaning and direct charging, stop treating the problem as a phone setting.

Use the Bluetooth recovery sequence in order

Once the case shows charge and both earbuds are seated, work through this sequence. It removes the common stale-record and competing-device causes before you erase the earbuds’ settings.

  1. Restart the playback device. Power-cycle the phone, tablet, computer or other device that should play audio. This clears a Bluetooth service that may be stuck even though Bluetooth appears enabled.
  2. Forget the Sony entry. Open the device’s Bluetooth settings, select the Sony earbuds and choose the command labelled Forget, Remove or Delete this device. Remove duplicate Sony entries as well, including an older entry for the same model.
  3. Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again. Keep the earbuds and the playback device close together while pairing.
  4. Pair again. Put both earbuds in the case, open the lid and start the model’s pairing mode. Select the newly displayed Sony entry, not an old saved record. If a pairing prompt appears on more than one device, accept it only on the device you intend to use.
  5. Check other nearby devices. A phone, tablet, laptop or television that was paired previously may connect first. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on those devices, then pair with only the intended device active.
  6. Reset the earbuds. If the earbuds still do not appear or pairing repeatedly fails, use the model-specific reset procedure below. A reset is the first software recovery step and normally preserves pairing information.
  7. Initialize only if reset fails. Initialization returns the earbuds to factory settings and deletes all Bluetooth pairing information. After it finishes, delete the old Sony entry from every playback device and pair from scratch.

What to check after a successful pairing

Play audio for several minutes with the playback device nearby. Confirm that both channels remain active, then open Sony | Sound Connect if you use it. If audio is stable but the app is not, that is an app-detection problem rather than proof that the Bluetooth radio has failed.

Reset and initialization are different operations

Reset: the first software recovery

A reset restarts the earbud system without normally removing its stored pairing data. It is appropriate after correcting charging, cleaning the contacts and deleting the phone’s Bluetooth record. Exact controls differ by model, so use the instructions for the model name printed on your case. Do not substitute a different model’s button, touch or indicator sequence.

Initialization: a factory reset

Sony describes initialization as a factory reset: “IMPORTANT: The initialize operation resets all the device settings to the factory defaults and deletes all pairing information.” Treat it as the last software step, not as a routine fix. When initialization is complete, remove any old Sony entry on the phone or computer and create a new pairing. If you skip the deletion, the device can continue trying to use a stale record.

For case-based WF-1000XM5 and WF-1000XM6 procedures, Sony’s sequence uses approximately 15 seconds of holding, followed by release within five seconds after the indicator starts flashing orange; four green flashes confirm completion. If the case does not have sufficient charge, initialization may not start. Do not interpret a failed sequence as proof that the earbuds are defective until the case has been charged and its contacts checked.

A reset and an initialization have different consequences. Use reset when you want a non-destructive recovery; use initialization when reset and a fresh phone-side pairing record have not solved the fault. Because initialization removes every pairing, be ready to pair the earbuds again with each device you still use.

Model-specific reset guidance

WF-1000XM5 and WF-1000XM6

Put both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open. Sony’s reset instructions for these models require holding the case reset control for about 20 seconds; release only after the indicator shows the reset sequence. The control and light pattern are model-specific, so identify whether the case says WF-1000XM5 or WF-1000XM6 before following an on-screen or printed guide.

If the reset does not restore discovery, use the initialization sequence: hold for roughly 15 seconds, release within five seconds after the orange flashing begins, and verify the four green flashes. A case with too little charge cannot start initialization. Once the green confirmation appears, forget any previous Sony entry and pair again.

WF-C500

First charge the case in an environment between 15 and 35 °C, clean the USB-C port and earbud contacts, and verify that the earbuds sit fully in their cradles. Sony’s recovery path then proceeds through reset and initialization. If the case still will not charge after those steps, stop repeating the software procedures and arrange service.

WF-C700N and WF-C710N

These models can fail to enter pairing mode when an earbud is not making contact or is sitting high in the case. Reseat both sides and clean the contacts before resetting. On the WF-C710N, three repeating orange flashes indicate that the left and right earbuds are paired incorrectly. Sony recommends initialization for that condition, followed by fresh pairing.

Fix a single earbud that will not charge

When one side is dead while the other works, the usual first suspect is the physical charging path rather than Bluetooth.

  1. Remove the non-working earbud and inspect its contact surfaces for wax, dust or residue.
  2. Check the matching pins or pads in the case for obstruction, then wipe both sides with a soft, dry cloth.
  3. Reinsert the earbud and press it down gently until it sits at the same height as the working side.
  4. Connect the case to direct USB power and watch for the charging indication. Leave the earbud in place long enough to determine whether its battery level changes.
  5. Try the earbud again only after the case has established charge. If it remains unresponsive while the other side charges normally, the earbud battery, contact assembly or case cradle may need service.

An earbud can appear in a phone’s Bluetooth list while its battery is effectively empty. Bluetooth discovery therefore does not prove that the side is charging. If moving or pressing the earbud changes the light, that is a strong reason to inspect seating and contacts again rather than repeatedly deleting Bluetooth records.

Stop repeated disconnections

Remove competing connections

If the earbuds connect and then drop, turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices that were paired previously. Sony’s pairing flow specifically checks whether another remembered device has taken the connection. With only the intended phone or computer active, forget the Sony entry, toggle Bluetooth and pair again.

Restart the earbuds through the case

Place both earbuds in the case once, confirm that they are seated and close the lid briefly. This restarts the earbuds before you repeat pairing. If repeated drops continue after a reset, proceed to initialization rather than cycling the same pairing attempt indefinitely.

Separate app detection from Bluetooth audio

Bluetooth audio can work even when Sony | Sound Connect does not detect the earbuds. In that situation, update the app, restart the phone, put the earbuds in the case once to restart them, and then follow the model-specific reset guide. The app’s failure to display the earbuds does not by itself prove that the radio or speakers are damaged.

Test one variable at a time

Keep the earbuds close to one playback device, with other remembered devices’ Bluetooth disabled, while testing. Do not initialize, change phones and test a Windows driver all at once; you need to know which step changed the symptom. After a reset or initialization, complete one clean pairing before adding another device.

When the earbuds do not appear in Bluetooth at all

  • No case light: charge the case directly with the supplied cable and clean the USB-C port. A case that never responds needs service rather than more pairing attempts.
  • Case light works, but no discovery: reseat both earbuds, restart the playback device, forget old Sony records, toggle Bluetooth and pair with the earbuds nearby.
  • Discovery returns after a reset: complete pairing immediately and leave other previously paired devices’ Bluetooth disabled until the connection is stable.
  • Discovery still fails after initialization: confirm the initialization indicator sequence, delete old records again and retry once. If the case has charge and the full sequence still fails, treat it as a possible hardware malfunction.
  • Only one side appears or plays: return to the charging path, because a poorly seated or uncharged earbud can make the pair appear incomplete even when the phone sees a Sony device.

Replacement parts and authorized service

WF-1000XM5 ear tips

Sony identifies the EP-NI1010 series as separately sold replacement tips for the WF-1000XM5. Replace tips that are damaged or lost. Deteriorated tips can reduce sound and noise-cancelling performance and may detach in the ear. This is a fit and safety replacement, not a fix for a charging or Bluetooth fault.

WF-1000XM5 charging case

For a damaged or failed case, Sony directs customers to Encompass for authorized replacement cases. The catalog lists model-specific black and platinum-silver cases as well as individual earbuds; verify the exact WF-1000XM5 variant before ordering. A replacement case is preferable to an unverified third-party case when the original cannot hold charge or its indicator never responds.

When to stop troubleshooting

Move to Sony support or an authorized repair route after charging, contact cleaning, deletion of the Bluetooth record, reset and initialization have all failed. Do not keep repeating initialization when the case cannot hold charge or its indicator never responds. Those symptoms point away from a recoverable pairing record and toward a case, battery, contact or earbud hardware problem. Record the model number and the indicator behavior before contacting support; those details help distinguish a pairing issue from a charging failure.

Optional Windows-only check

If the earbuds work normally with a phone but fail only on a Windows computer, first repeat the restart, Bluetooth deletion, toggle and re-pair sequence on the PC. Driver-maintenance software such as Outbyte’s PC Repair or Driver Updater can be considered as an optional Windows troubleshooting path, but it is not made by Sony, Sony does not endorse it in these instructions, and it does not repair the earbuds themselves. Use it only after the hardware and Bluetooth steps above and only if the fault is confined to that Windows installation.

Final checklist

  • Both earbuds are seated fully and their contacts are clean.
  • The case indicator responds and the case has been charged with the supplied cable or correctly placed on a compatible wireless charger.
  • The WF-C500 is being charged between 15 and 35 °C.
  • The playback device has been restarted.
  • Old Sony Bluetooth entries have been forgotten and competing nearby devices are disconnected.
  • Bluetooth has been toggled and the earbuds paired again at close range.
  • A reset was attempted before initialization.
  • Initialization was followed by deleting old records and creating a fresh pairing.
  • Persistent no-light, no-charge or post-initialization failures have been referred to Sony support or authorized service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Sony earbuds show up in Bluetooth?

Charge the case, reseat both earbuds and clean their contacts first. Restart the phone or computer, forget old Sony entries, toggle Bluetooth and pair again nearby. If discovery still fails, perform the model-specific reset and then initialize only if reset fails.

Why is one Sony earbud not charging?

Remove and reseat the dead side, inspect and clean its contact surface and the matching case contacts, and make sure it is not sitting high in the cradle. Charge the case with the supplied cable. If one side remains dead while the other charges, service may be required.

What is the difference between resetting and initializing Sony earbuds?

Reset is the first software recovery and normally preserves pairing information. Initialization restores factory settings and deletes all Bluetooth pairing information, so you must forget old entries and pair again afterward.

How do I initialize WF-1000XM5 or WF-1000XM6 earbuds?

With both earbuds in the case, follow the model’s case-based initialization sequence: hold for roughly 15 seconds, release within five seconds after orange flashing begins, and look for four green flashes. The case must have enough charge, and the exact control should be confirmed in Sony’s guide for your model.

What do three repeating orange flashes mean on WF-C710N?

Sony identifies that pattern as the left and right earbuds being paired incorrectly. Check seating and clean the contacts, then initialize the earbuds and complete a fresh pairing.

Why does Sony | Sound Connect not detect earbuds that play audio?

Bluetooth audio and app detection can fail separately. Update Sony | Sound Connect, restart the phone, place the earbuds in the case once to restart them, and follow the model-specific reset guide.

The Bottom Line

Most Sony earbud failures clear when you correct seating and contact cleanliness, charge the case with the supplied cable, remove stale Bluetooth records and pair again. Reset before initialization; initialization is the final software step because it erases pairings. If the case never indicates charging, cannot hold charge, or the full sequence fails, stop repeating resets and use Sony’s model-specific service or authorized replacement-part route.
