If your Sonos Beam Ultra keeps cutting out or produces no TV sound, first verify that its HDMI cable is connected to the television port labeled ARC, eARC, or ARC/eARC—not an ordinary HDMI input. Then power-cycle the TV and source, reseat or replace the cable, confirm Beam Ultra is set up in the Sonos app, enable HDMI-CEC, update the TV, and temporarily select Stereo/PCM. These steps identify whether the fault is the HDMI link, an audio-format negotiation, the TV/source, or the Beam setup.
Start with the port and cable
Beam Ultra receives television audio through the TV’s audio-return connection. The correct socket is explicitly marked ARC, eARC, or ARC/eARC. A regular HDMI input only accepts video and audio into the TV; it does not send the TV’s audio back to the soundbar. Sonos states in its user guide that connecting Beam to a standard HDMI port means you “won’t hear any sound.”

Move the Beam Ultra cable to the labeled ARC/eARC socket before changing software settings. Push both plugs fully into place. A connector that looks inserted but is slightly loose can break the HDMI handshake whenever the TV changes input, wakes from standby, or switches audio format.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect and substitute the cable
- Look for crushed sections, sharply bent ends, damaged insulation, or plugs that wobble in the socket.
- Disconnect and reconnect both ends while the TV and Beam are powered off.
- Test with a different known-good High Speed HDMI cable if one is available. Use a cable long enough to avoid tension, but do not coil excess cable tightly around power adapters.
- Remove HDMI switchers, splitters, capture devices, and extension couplers from the ARC path while diagnosing. Connect Beam Ultra directly to the TV.
A replacement cable is worthwhile when the existing one is damaged or intermittent, but a new cable cannot correct a TV that is configured for the wrong output or a source that is sending an incompatible format.

What the symptoms tell you
| Symptom | Most useful first check | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from the first setup | Confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port and Beam Ultra has been added in the Sonos app. | A normal HDMI input, incomplete setup, or an undetected ARC connection is likely. |
| Sound cuts out when changing channels or inputs | Power-cycle the TV and source, then reseat or replace the HDMI cable. | The ARC handshake or source transition is being lost. |
| Dropouts happen only with Dolby or surround audio | Temporarily set the TV’s digital-audio output to Stereo or PCM. | The TV/source format path is more suspect than basic power or cabling. |
| TV speakers also cut out | Disconnect Beam Ultra and listen through the TV. | Investigate the TV, its firmware, broadcast service, streaming app, or external source. |
| TV speakers remain stable but Beam cuts out | Return to ARC/eARC port, cable, CEC, TV-audio settings, and Beam setup. | The problem is concentrated in the ARC link or Beam configuration. |
Step-by-step fix for HDMI-ARC dropouts
1. Shut down the HDMI chain
- Turn off the television and the device supplying the program, such as a streaming box, game console, or set-top box.
- Unplug the TV and that source device from power for about 10 seconds. If Beam Ultra is still powered, unplug it as well.
- Reconnect power to the TV and source, then allow the TV to finish starting.
- Power Beam Ultra and test the same program that previously lost sound.
This reboot clears a failed HDMI handshake. It is more useful than repeatedly changing inputs while the devices remain in a confused state. If audio returns only until the next standby cycle, continue with the cable, CEC, firmware, and format checks below.
2. Confirm the Beam connection and app setup
Beam Ultra must be added and configured in the Sonos app before it can play TV audio. Open the app, select the Beam Ultra, and follow the TV-setup flow. If the app says ARC is not detected, do not treat that message as a speaker failure: first recheck the labeled port, cable seating, and TV settings.
Run the TV setup again after correcting the physical connection. Keep the TV on during detection and use the on-screen instructions for your model. A successful setup should allow the app to identify the TV connection and should restore sound when a TV program is playing.

HDMI-CEC is the control channel used for commands such as volume, mute, power synchronization, and input behavior between compatible devices. TV manufacturers use different names for CEC, so search the TV’s settings for a section such as External devices, HDMI control, Device link, or CEC. Turn it on, save the setting, and rerun Sonos TV setup if the app previously reported that ARC was unavailable.

CEC is especially important when you expect the television remote to control Beam Ultra. A TV can sometimes pass audio while CEC is disabled, but control commands and parts of the setup process may not work. If enabling CEC causes the TV to select a different speaker automatically, restart both devices and test again rather than repeatedly toggling the option.
4. Install TV firmware updates
Open the TV’s software or system-update menu and install any available firmware. TV manufacturers periodically correct HDMI-ARC negotiation, standby-wake behavior, and audio-format compatibility in firmware. Keep the TV connected to power and the network as required by its update process, then restart it before retesting Beam Ultra.
Also check for updates in the Sonos app. After an update, the TV may revert to its internal speakers or reset digital-audio output, so confirm the selected audio destination and format after the restart.
5. Isolate the audio format with Stereo/PCM
When dropouts appear only with Dolby Digital or another surround setting, temporarily change the TV’s digital-audio output to Stereo or PCM. The exact label may be Digital sound output, Digital audio format, Audio output, or a similar menu item.

- Start a program that normally cuts out.
- Open the TV sound settings and select Stereo or PCM instead of Auto, Bitstream, Dolby, or Pass-through.
- Listen for several minutes, change channels or inputs, and put the TV into standby once before testing again.
If PCM remains stable while Dolby or another surround format drops out, the fault is probably in the TV/source format path rather than the Beam’s power. Keep PCM as a temporary diagnostic or everyday workaround if two-channel sound is acceptable, then troubleshoot the source device and TV passthrough options. PCM does not restore surround formats; it simply sends a simpler signal that is less demanding for the current link.
6. Test each source separately
Try the TV’s built-in app, a broadcast channel, and one external HDMI source. Note whether the dropout follows one source or occurs everywhere.
- If only one external box causes the problem, update that box, try another HDMI input for the box, and inspect its audio-output setting.
- If built-in apps and every HDMI source fail, focus on the TV’s ARC/eARC configuration, firmware, and cable.
- If changing from Dolby to PCM fixes only one source, leave the other sources on their normal format and adjust the problem device independently.
Keep Beam Ultra connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC socket throughout this test. Moving it between ordinary inputs can create a second problem and make the results difficult to interpret.
7. Separate a TV fault from a Beam or ARC fault
Disconnect the HDMI cable from Beam Ultra, select the TV’s internal speakers, and play the same content.

- The TV speakers also cut out: investigate the TV, its firmware, the broadcast or streaming service, and the external source. Beam Ultra is not the cause of a dropout that is audible before the ARC link is used.
- The TV speakers stay stable: reconnect Beam Ultra and return to the ARC/eARC port, cable, CEC, TV output format, and Sonos TV setup. The evidence points to the ARC link or Beam configuration.
Repeat the comparison with more than one source if possible. A single streaming app can have its own playback or network problem that resembles an HDMI fault.
8. Rebuild the connection after changing settings
After changing the cable, CEC, firmware, or output format, turn the TV and Beam Ultra off, wait briefly, and power them back on. HDMI devices negotiate capabilities during startup; testing without a restart can leave an old state active. Confirm that the TV’s audio destination is the external HDMI/ARC device and that the Beam is selected in the Sonos app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing ARC/eARC or optical
Optical is a fallback for a television that has no HDMI ARC or eARC socket. Connect the TV’s digital optical output to the Sonos Optical Audio Adapter, then connect the adapter to Beam Ultra as directed by Sonos. This can restore television sound when ARC is unavailable, but it is not an equivalent connection.

| Connection | When to use it | Benefits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | The TV has a port labeled ARC or ARC/eARC. | One cable carries TV audio and supports HDMI-CEC control commands. | Depends on a correct port, stable handshake, compatible settings, and an undamaged cable. |
| HDMI eARC | The TV and Beam path expose eARC. | Uses the enhanced audio-return connection and is required by Atmos-capable Sonos products for Atmos playback when the TV/source setup calls for it. | Still depends on TV firmware, settings, CEC behavior, and the physical cable path. |
| Optical with the Sonos Optical Audio Adapter | The TV lacks ARC/eARC or its ARC implementation cannot be used. | Provides a separate digital-audio path that can restore basic TV sound. | No HDMI-CEC, no HDMI-based voice-control functions, and no equivalent route for Dolby Atmos. |
Use ARC or eARC whenever the TV provides a usable port, particularly if you want HDMI-CEC commands, voice-control functions that depend on the HDMI connection, or Atmos playback. Choose optical only after confirming that ARC/eARC is unavailable or cannot be made reliable.

Settings that commonly interrupt ARC audio
TV speaker destination
Set the TV’s sound output to the external HDMI device, receiver, or ARC/eARC option rather than TV speakers. Some televisions revert to internal speakers after a firmware update, factory reset, or when they detect a different HDMI device. If the TV shows both an HDMI/ARC destination and an optical destination, select the connection you are actually using.
Digital audio output
Use PCM or Stereo to diagnose format-related interruptions. Once stable, test the TV’s Auto, Dolby, or passthrough modes one at a time. Write down which mode works with each source; this prevents a later update or input change from silently returning to a mode that drops out.
CEC and power behavior
CEC lets the TV remote send volume and mute commands to Beam Ultra and can coordinate wake and standby. If those commands fail while sound is present, CEC is the first setting to verify. If audio itself disappears after standby, reboot the HDMI chain and rerun TV setup after enabling CEC.
Advanced decision tree for persistent dropouts
- No sound at all: verify the ARC/eARC label, cable seating, TV output destination, and Beam setup in the Sonos app.
- Sound returns after unplugging: treat it as a handshake or standby problem. Apply the 10-second power cycle, update firmware, enable CEC, and retest.
- Only Dolby or surround drops: use PCM, then test each source’s audio setting and the TV’s passthrough/Auto mode.
- Only one source drops: update or reconfigure that source and test it through another TV input while Beam remains on ARC/eARC.
- TV speakers drop too: troubleshoot the TV or source independently; changing Beam cables will not repair a dropout already present in the TV’s own output.
- Everything is stable on PCM but not surround: keep PCM if reliable stereo is acceptable, or continue with TV/source firmware and format compatibility checks. Do not assume that replacing Beam Ultra is the next step.
Preventing the problem from returning
- Leave Beam Ultra connected to the TV’s dedicated ARC/eARC port instead of moving it among ordinary HDMI inputs.
- Use a sound, High Speed HDMI cable with no unnecessary couplers or switches in the ARC route.
- Keep TV and source firmware current, especially after a major TV update or reset.
- Keep HDMI-CEC enabled when you need TV-remote control, mute, power synchronization, or related commands.
- When a new source is added, test it first with PCM, then restore surround output only after the basic link is stable.
- If the TV changes back to its speakers, select the HDMI/ARC output again and rerun the Sonos TV setup if ARC detection is lost.
When to stop troubleshooting the cable
A cable swap is a sensible early test, not a universal cure. If a known-good cable in the correctly labeled ARC/eARC port still loses audio while the TV speakers remain stable, concentrate on CEC, firmware, TV output mode, source format, and Beam setup. If PCM is also unreliable after a direct connection and power cycle, the TV’s ARC implementation or the Beam installation may need service. Record which sources fail, whether the TV speakers remain stable, and which output formats work; those observations make support diagnosis faster.
